Denon Blu-ray Player on the Way?

In a recent interview with ListenUp.com, Jeff Talmadge from Denon stated that they would announce plans for a high definition player as early as July, but no format was given. When you couple this information with the fact that Funai (who recently announced a Blu-ray player for this fall) makes DVD players for Denon, and that D&M Holdings, the parent company of Denon, is now an adopter of BD+, it appears that the Denon player will most certainly be Blu-ray.

This information, of course, is all speculative right now, but we hope to hear more from Denon in the upcoming months about their future high definition plans.

Samsung BDP-UP5000 Blu-ray and HD DVD Player Release Date

Samsung said in Germany at a IFA preparation event that they will ship the dual HD player BDP-UP5000 in October or November.

Samsung announced the Blu-ray and HD-DVD player BDP-UP5000 already in April.

LG got lots of attention for the first dual HD player BH100, when they announced it at the CES 2007. The only problem is still that the price of about $1,000 is way to high.

As long as you can buy a HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player together for less money a hybrid HD player is just not worth it, especially because it is the first generation of such a player.
Most likely Samsung will exhibit the BDP-UP5000 at the IFA 2007, which starts on August 31st in Berlin.

PS3 boosts Blu-ray sales by 1000 per cent

More than 180,000 discs sold in Europe

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a huge increase in European Blu-ray disc sales - attributing the rise to the release of PlayStation 3.

As reported by Tech Digest, more than 180,000 SPHE films have now been sold in Europe. According to Sony, sales have soared by over 1000 per cent since the PS3 launched in March.

The company also said SPHE titles account for more than 50 per cent of all Blu-ray discs sold in the UK, France and Spain.

"The launch of the PS3 had a tremendous impact on Blu-ray software sales across the board," said Matt Brown, executive VP at Sony Pictures.

"Recent sales figures are a clear indication that the PS3 is seen as an entertainment device."

Sharp Readies First Blu-ray Player for Fall Release

Sharp Electronics has announced it will release its first Blu-ray disc player in time for the holiday season.

Dubbed the BD-HP205, thus far Sharp has released only preliminary specs for the deck, which is due by late fall.

Expect 1080p output capability at both 24fps and 60fps, plus in-board Dolby TrueHD decoding.

The player is also slated to fully support HDMI v1.3, and includes analog 5.1 outputs as well.

Sharp is also touting a new 'Quick Start' feature, which will load a disc mere seconds after being inserted into the tray. This is likely to be viewed as a welcome addition by early adopters, as currently load times on Blu-ray (and HD DVD) players tend to be frustratingly slow.

The manufacturer has not yet announced an exact street or pricing for the BD-HP205, but we'll keep you posted. Watch this space!

Samsung Prepping Third-Generation Blu-ray Player For Release

Samsung Electronics has announced it is readying the world's first third-generation Blu-ray disc player, featuring a host of enhanced features.

Dubbed the BD-P1400, preliminary specs just revealed by the electronics giant highlight what is likely to be one of the most feature-rich Blu-ray players yet to hit the market.

In addition to full 1080p output capability (at both 24fps and 60fps), the deck will boast in-board Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio decoding.

The player is also expected to include a built-in Ethernet port (in anticipation of future Blu-ray disc releases featuring web-enabled content), and is likely to fully support HDMI v1.3 as well.

Samsung has not yet announced an exact release date or pricing for the BD-P1400, although it's been rumored for anytime between late July and Q1 2008. The company has confirmed that it will display the new player at the 2007 IFA consumer electronics conference in Berlin beginning August 31.

We'll keep you posted as further specs and release information is unveiled, so stay tuned!

Samsung to launch '€400' Blu-ray/HD DVD player next month

Samsung will launch its promised dual-format HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc player in Europe next month, the company has said, and industry insiders are already claiming the machine could be priced at just €400 ($548/£271).

Samsung apparently revealed its plan to launch the player, the BD-UP5000, at a recent preview event for the upcoming IFA consumer electronics show, which kicks off in Berlin at the end of August. Nothing was said about pricing - the €400 comes from Taiwanese moles cited by DigiTimes without addressing how Taiwanese sources might know what local pricing decisions the European wing of a South Korean company has made.

Samsung executives first hinted they were pondering a dual-format player back in the Autumn of 2005, but the company quickly acted to stress its total support for Blu-ray Disc. The rumour was revived last year after the first signs LG might be planning to produce such a machine surfaced in March 2006. The following June, Samsung staff were once again being quoted as claiming the company was considering a dual-format player.

Samsung has become increasingly willing to throw its weight behind HD DVD as well as Blu-ray of late, most notably by announcing last month a latptop with an integrated HD DVD drive.

The BD-UP5000 is said to offer full support for the two optical disc formats' interactivity technologies, HDi and BD Java. That lifts the machine above the dual-format player announced by LG in January: it will only handle Blu-ray interactivity - HD DVD playback is limited to the movies themselves.

Samsung has announced that their dual format player, the BD-UP5000, is now set to be released in October or November for the European Market. The player will come with an Ethernet connection, and play both BD-J and HDi interactive content. It will also output 1080p at either 60fps or 24fps. No price has been set, but Samsung said it will cost approximately 400 euros (~$540) more than a standard Blu-ray player.

Amazon Bundles $499 PS3 with Free Remote and 'Memento' Blu-ray

Hot on the heels of Sony's $100 price cut on the PlayStation 3, Amazon is offering one heck of a bundle for prospective Blu-ray fans.

For a limited time, consumers buying the PS3 at Amazon will also receive the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Remote control and a copy of the cult favorite 'Memento' on Blu-ray disc, both free of charge.

Combined with the Blu-ray Disc Association's recently-announced "Five Free Discs" offer, all of the free gear amounts to over $200 in value.

With 'Memento' already topping Amazon's Blu-ray sales charts as of late Tuesday, it would seem that this is a deal that a good number of consumers are finding hard to pass up. Since Monday's price cut, the PS3 itself has also shot up the Amazon sales ranks, from #26 in Video Games to #1 (the bundled remote is #2).

This latest offer from Amazon comes amidst a summer season that's been jam-packed with price-cuts and free disc bundles on both sides of the high-def format war. With player prices down by over 50% since this time last year (to a low of $299 for HD DVD and $499 for Blu-ray), there's never been a better time to make the leap to high-def disc.

Blu-ray Backers Launch New High-Def Website

In a unique marketing move, several major Blu-ray-backing studios have teamed up to create a new consumer-focused content site called Hollywood in Hi-Def.

At first glance, the just-launched website would appear to be about high-def discs in general, but upon closer inspection, Hollywood in Hi-Def's mix of original content and links to news and reviews from other sites (including this one) is laser-focused on the Blu-ray format only.

This, of course, should come as no surprise given its stated backing by Blu-ray supporters Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Fox Home Entertainment, although the site's lack of direct disclosure has already raised a few eyebrows.

Edited by former Video Business magazine editor-in-chief Scott Hettrick, a sampling of original content on the site today features an introductory blog post by Hettrick, an interview with Jerry Bruckheimer about Blu-ray, and video footage from Disney's recent 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Blu-ray premiere party.

In an interview with Video Business, Hettrick said of his support of the Blu-ray format, "From a marketing and industry support standpoint, I think that they really have a far better chance of being successful."

Samsung's BD-P2400 and BD-P1400 third-gen Blu-ray players

Samsung has dropped its "Holidays in July" bomb on the good people of Earth, and within that treasure trove are a few little gems, like the company's new Blu-ray duo, the BD-P2400, and kid sister BD-P1400. Both players feature Blu-ray playback at native HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p), handle HD video at 1920 x 1080, and up-convert standard DVDs to 1080p via HDMI. The BD-P2400 also utilizes Samsung's "Hollywood Quality Video", which rocks some proprietary de-interlacing that makes Pirates of the Caribbean look really, really real. The player's audio does the regular rounds with stereo and 5.1, coaxial and optical digital outs, and Dolby Digital Plus with DTS HD and MP3 playback.; for video you get HDMI, component, S-Video and composite outs. The BD-P2400 will be available in October for $649, and the BD-P1400 in September for $549.

Also, could this be Denon's forthcoming Blu-ray Disc player, or is it just a marketing/design mock-up? Almost certainly, it's the latter. But the Coroflot industrial design website has posted photos of a BD player (the DVD-HD8910) and a new 7.1 media center/receiver as well (the AVR-HD8910). The text indicates that the receiver comes equipped with a 2TB built-in hard drive (!) and a direct connection to the iTunes music store. And both are... well, darned funky looking. Here's a gander...

Tartan go Blu-ray

Tartan Video will make the move into High Definition later this summer and have today announced their decision to go with the Blu-ray Disc format. Arriving on 27th August 2007 is Paul Verhoven’s war epic, Black Book and a special 50th Anniversary Edition of Ingmar Bergman’s classic, The Seventh Seal. A month later on 24th September 2007 fans of Asian cinema can pick up Park Chan-Wook’s revenge thriller Oldboy.

All titles are making their worldwide Blu-ray Disc debut and in an interesting move will come packaged with the DVD edition of each film to “allow consumers who have yet to invest in Blu-ray technology the opportunity to enjoy the films on existing players at no additional cost as they invest for the future. “

Retail is £29.99 each.

Final disc specs are still being ironed out, but Tartan have told us that all titles will be encoded using the AVC video codec and to expect DTS Master Audio and Dolby Digital on Black Book and Oldboy. Extras from the DVD releases of Black Book and the 50th Anniversary Edition of The Seventh Seal should find their way onto the respective Blu-ray Disc editions, while Oldboy on Blu-ray Disc will have the commentary tracks and possibly the deleted scenes with optional commentary carried over.

Once again, all these specs are subject to change.

Funimation goes Blu-ray

The folks at FUNimation Entertainment are far more forthcoming than some of their competitors when it comes to their plans for high-def. For starters, they have acknowledged to IGN that they have in fact chosen to go with the Blu-ray format when they do start releasing titles.

"At this point, we are in the Blu-ray camp. We started researching this about a year-and-a-half ago, actually," explains Ward Thomas, Senior VP of Sales and Operations at FUNimation. "We feel that the fanbase and our customers are very much trailblazers on the technology side, so it's something we wanted to get involved in right away. We really felt that the introduction of the PlayStation 3 last year was kind of a foray for our customers and fans to at least get into the next-gen platforms."

I have always found it fascinating how selective the HD-DVD group is with the numbers it releases to try to make things look like HD-DVD is doing really well.

There are two approaches taken by the HD-DVD group, interestingly one contradicts the other.

Here they are:

Approach #1 ---> When calculating player sales, adamantly deny that the PS3 is a Blu-ray player. Insist that the PS3 cannot be counted. This is done to make the false claim that HD-DVD has sold more "players". Since the PS3 is not a Blu-ray player, the other Blu-ray players must have a ridiculously high attach rate to account for the massive Blu-ray software lead. This part is of course never mentioned.

Approach #2 ---> When looking at software sales there is no way to hide the fact that HD-DVD is getting pummeled by Blu-ray in total sales, so instead HD-DVD focuses on "attach rate". In this scenario every PS3 is counted as a Blu-ray player by them! Obviously this is not even remotely consistent with #1 above.

So when it suits them no PS3s are counted as Blu-ray players, and when it doesn't every single PS3 is counted as a Blu-ray player. Surely most logical people can see this as FUD.

The article I quoted suggests that niether camp is as clear with the numbers as many of us would like. It offers a somewhat critical analysis of the ridiculous claim by the the HD-DVD group recently that they have 74% of the "player" install base in the EU.

Actually if you count the PS3 as a Blu-ray player then HD-DVD has 8% of the worldwide high-def player install base. Not 74%, but 8%"

Disney goes all out for Blu-ray tour

Postad bild

Burbank (CA) - As one of the biggest content supporters for Blu-ray, Disney will be kicking off a multi-million dollar promotional tour for the high definition format.

Disney will set up mall kiosks in 18 cities across the country, showing off new and upcoming Blu-ray movies.  It's a move that Disney hopes will educate non-enthusiast customers about the Sony-fronted format.  In addition to interactive demo stations, the kiosks will show presentations of select videos every hour.

While several hardware and content providers are hedging their bets between the two formats, including Warner, Panasonic and Toshiba, Disney has already shown extremely strong devotion to Blu-ray.

Future Disney titles are expected to include exclusive interactive games that take of Blu-ray technology, new special features, and digitally restored versions of classic animated and feature films.

Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour will begin on August 17 in Canoga Park, CA, and continue through the holiday season across 17 other cities, including San Francisco, Portland, OR, Seattle, St. Louis, Atlanta, and Houston.

The entire tour schedule can be seen at Blu-ray.com
