Using an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player on a desktop PC

Bringing High Definition Content To The HTPC

I've had a high definition (HD) television for some time now, although just recently I have come out of the stone ages and shelled out the extra money to have HD cable service. I once thought that watching a regular DVD at 480p looked sharp as can be, but now that I have 1080i HDTV it has left me wanting better quality for my DVD's. I'm not alone it seems as HD content is gaining in popularity thanks to increasing availability and affordability of HD-capable television sets and movies on HD media. I was left looking for something to replace my aging DVD player that tops out at 480p as I wanted HD for my movies. With the Blu-ray and HD DVD format battle still raging I found myself looking at the Microsoft XBOX 360 HD DVD player as it should hold its retail value down the road should I ever choose to go Blu-ray as there are plenty of Xbox 360 owners in the world. The retail box that Xbox 360 HD DVD player comes in clearly states that a Microsoft Xbox 360 is required, but that isn't true as you are about to find out.....

University boffins squeeze 500GB onto a DVD
Published Friday 6th July 2007

The University of Berlin, with partners Budapest University of Technology and Economics and Universita Politecnica delle Marche in Italy, has managed to work out how to store 500GB of data on a regular HD DVD or Blu-ray disc.

The Microholas project developed a microholographic recording technique, using nanostructures inside the disk rather than on the surface as in conventional optical storage systems.

This allowed for an increase of the storage capacity far beyond the limits of today's red-laser DVDs and next-generation blue-laser discs.

A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB. A dual-layer disc holds double this amount. Single- and dual-layer HD DVDs hold 15GB and 30GB of data, respectively.

By applying wavelength multiplexing techniques to multi-layer disc structures, very high storage densities can be achieved, Professor Susanna Orlic told German site Pressetext. The 500GB prototype has 50 data-storage layers.

Orl said the technology has the potential to store one terabyte (1TB) of data.

The idea is not to stash away a thousand movies on a single disc, but to use the technology for secure long-term storage, the Prof said.

Toshiba looks to Chinese market for LCDs, HD DVD

"Manufacturing mogul Toshiba is looking at market expansion into China for growth, according to an interview given at the Chinese SINOCES trade show. The company expects to sell ten million LCD televisions to the Chinese market in 2008, making it the second-largest market behind the US. Toshiba is also hoping to launch HD DVD players there, with mention of partnering with Chinese manufacturers, although certain "content licensing and software issues" need to be worked out (you can bet that means piracy protection). And just because we love to bring it all back to that crazy format war, we have to wonder, is this a brilliant move by Toshiba, who can suddenly make up the difference in sales lost from skittish potential buyers in other countries? Or will the format -- heck, either format -- languish there like it does here when compared to standard-def DVD?"

Samsung to launch '€400' HD DVD / B-ray player next month

Samsung will launch its promised dual-format HD DVD/B-ray Disc player in Europe next month, the company has said, and industry insiders are already claiming the machine could be priced at just €400 ($548/£271).

Samsung apparently revealed its plan to launch the player, the BD-UP5000, at a recent preview event for the upcoming IFA consumer electronics show, which kicks off in Berlin at the end of August. Nothing was said about pricing - the €400 comes from Taiwanese moles cited by DigiTimes without addressing how Taiwanese sources might know what local pricing decisions the European wing of a South Korean company has made.

Samsung executives first hinted they were pondering a dual-format player back in the Autumn of 2005, but the company quickly acted to stress its total support for Blu-ray Disc. The rumour was revived last year after the first signs LG might be planning to produce such a machine surfaced in March 2006. The following June, Samsung staff were once again being quoted as claiming the company was considering a dual-format player.

Samsung has become increasingly willing to throw its weight behind HD DVD as well as B-ray of late, most notably by announcing last month a latptop with an integrated HD DVD drive.

The BD-UP5000 is said to offer full support for the two optical disc formats' interactivity technologies, HDi and BD Java.

Toshiba HD DVD Players Have 71% Retail Market Share in Europe

July 12 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp.'s video players with the HD DVD high-definition standard have a 71 percent market share in retail sales in six European countries, Toshiba said, citing market researcher GFK Group.

The figure includes those players sold to consumers through retail stores from January 2006 through May 2007 in the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, Olivier Van Wynendaele, a general manager for Tokyo-based Toshiba in Europe, said in an interview yesterday. He declined to give the number of units sold.

The market share may give Toshiba an advantage over rival Sony Corp., which is vying for consumer support for its competing Blu-ray high-definition format. HD DVD has support from Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp. and NEC Corp., while Blu-ray is backed by Samsung Group and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.

There are currently 130 HD DVD film titles available in Europe, 230 in the U.S. and 100 in Japan, Van Wynendaele said. By the end of the year, there will be 1,000 titles available.

While the data was only available for six countries, Toshiba is selling its product in 29 countries in Europe.

HD DVD Gets Microsoft HDi Boost

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 7/16/2007

[b]NEW YORK — Microsoft's HD DVD evangelist said the company will be a difference maker in the battle between the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats.

Kevin Collins, Microsoft's HD DVD evangelism director, met with select members of the press while in town for the recent Toshiba press event, where the launch of a firmware update giving all Toshiba HD DVD players the ability to connect to the Internet was announced.

The function will enable movie producers to build key extras into HD DVD discs, including the ability to download continuously changing content.

Några intressanta ord från Peter Moore(MS)

E3: Peter Moore: HD-DVD's Death Greatly Exaggerated

In an exclusive interview, Xbox head Peter Moore responded to Peter Dille of Sony's comments to Gamasutra regarding the Xbox 360's sustainability, and Dille's statement that HD-DVD would be dead within months.

"If they want to have an opinion about something that's 10 years down the road, that's fine," said Moore, regarding Microsoft's commitment to the 360. "I don't want to get into a sparring match with them over this," he continued, but mentioned that speculation about the future is nothing more than that - speculation.

On the topic of HD-DVD, Moore was largely bullish. "On that mark I look forward to speaking with you at, say, CES next year," he began. "I was just looking at HD-DVD numbers over the weekend, and I think Toshiba may have an opinion about that."

"Of course, the fact that Sony has an economic interest in making sure that it’s dead is interesting. I think his comments will be read with interest by folks in the European Union, and looking at the tactics the Blu-Ray forum has been using to ensure that retailers do things their way. Let’s just look at what happens this holiday. I think it’s kind of a preposterous statement. Within months? No."

The full Moore interview will run on Gamasutra at a later date, discussing the handheld market, casual entries, strategies for Japan, and what Microsoft could be doing better in the games space.

om jag ska säga mitt så kommer nog kombospelarna att sälja riktigt bra framåt hösten, men formatkriget kommer att bestå de närmaste 4-6 åren.

Toshiba extends 5 free HD DVD offer until September 31

We are shocked, SHOCKED to find out that not only does giving away movies and lowering prices increase HD DVD hardware and software sales, but now Toshiba has announced it is extending its "The Perfect Offer" of five free HD DVDs from a selection of 15, via mail-in with the purchase of any Toshiba HD DVD player. Originally set to run through July, the promotion has been extended until September 30th, so you might be able to find out if that Harry Potter box set has any HDi special features before choosing a side in the format war. Still, with the base HD-A2 player at a price of $299 and several free movies in the mix, Toshiba's certainly hoping to grab the attention of remaining fence sitters and current Blu-ray owners alike.

Och Press releasen

Consumers Can Get 'The Perfect Offer' All Summer Long With Toshiba's 5 Free HD DVD Disc Promotion

at the Home Media Expo, during a Q&A session, some BR fans including Mr. Bill Hunt, adamantly questioned Kevin Collins of Msoft and Ken of Universal as to why Universal would not end the war by becoming neutral. So BR fans even protested! Just read the rest. ;)

"JULY 18 | LAS VEGAS—Universal Studios Home Entertainment is adamant about exclusively offering HD DVD titles, despite protests by enthusiasts during the Home Media Expo here that it should work to end the high-definition format war.

Starting with the first season release of Heroes on HD DVD on Aug. 28, all new releases in the format from Universal will contain Web-enabled features. The interactivity is intended to underscore HD DVD advantages over Blu-ray Disc, whose studio backers have not yet starting offering Web-enabled Blu-ray titles. Most available Blu-ray players do not feature Internet connectivity.

With Heroes, consumers who buy the HD DVD will be immersed in the show’s official Web site, but officials declined to share details, which will be publicly announced during an NBC-Universal session at Comic-Con in San Diego, Calif., later this month.

“We are targeting the MySpace generation,” said Ken Graffeo, Universal executive VP of marketing and head of high-definition. “We are developing that same community. With Heroes, producer Tim Kring is very involved in letting HD DVD users exclusively participate in the Heroes community.”

Blu-ray players “don’t have the consistency in their machines to be able to handle this,” Graffeo added.

During a Wednesday session for Home Theater Forum members, Microsoft HD DVD evangelist Kevin Collins gave Home Theater Forum members the first public look at Heroes scenes and showed off some included picture-in-picture interactivity, another feature not yet offered on Blu-ray discs.

During a Q&A session with Collins later in the day, HTF members seemed grateful to hear about the format’s plans. But many still seemed angry over Universal’s HD DVD-only decision.

“I have Blu-ray. When are you going to go Blu-ray?” asked exasperated HTF member Dan Deganis, who recently purchased a Blu-ray-capable PlayStation 3.

Graffeo, Collins and other panelists acknowledged that PS3 owners far outweigh HD DVD player owners. But they argued that Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard are soon releasing a slew of HD DVD drives for notebooks and PCs.

“I don’t watch movies on my computer,” shot back Deganis, which was met with cheers from the audience.

Digital Bits Web site founder Bill Hunt told the panelists about a family friend who bought a Toshiba player quickly after the company reduced prices to $299. The machine was just as quickly returned to the store after the friend’s wife mistakenly bought Blu-ray titles Ice Age and Pirates of the Caribbean, not realizing they were incompatible with the new player.

“The average consumer is just sitting out on the sidelines,” said Hunt, adding that a lot of people are enjoying the advanced quality on upscaling DVD players, not feeling it’s necessary to also buy true high-def players. “How can this ever be a mass market?”

Digital Bits Web site founder Bill Hunt and HTF members also questioned Universal’s and Microsoft’s stance that interactivity gives HD DVD a serious leg up over Blu-ray.

With picture-in-picture, HTF’s Sam Posten bemoaned the complexity, saying “I can’t even explain this stuff to my mom. It makes it harder to get to the actual [film] feature. Who is going to sit through a movie three times to hopefully see a bug in the corner of the screen?”

Hunt chimed in, “And who is to say that a year from now, Blu-ray won’t be able to add these things anyway?”

Graffeo consistently defended Universal’s position, pointing out that outside of the U.S. HD DVD is far more pervasive than Blu-ray. Some Blu-ray studios do not have the international distribution rights to titles, which then are delivered by indie companies to non-U.S. retailers. Many of these indies, including Studio Canal, are choosing to produce in the cheaper-to-replicate HD DVD format.

“In Europe, 80% of the high-def content is HD vs. Blu-ray,” said Graffeo. “We need to look at this business on a global basis.”
