Battlefield Bad Company 2 Demo Launches Surprise Attack On Xbox 360


Not to be outdone by the impending release of a beta on the PC, the Xbox 360 has secured some Battlefield Bad Company 2 action of its own, with the surprise release of a demo.

Originally appearing in Australia overnight, the demo has now been downloaded - and played - by people all over the world. People who care not for the fact the demo wasn't supposed to be out until February 4; it's out now, servers are working, so they're going at it.

If you're worried about it being locked down by EA and/or Microsoft, don't sweat it: the early release has the official blessing of DICE, so have at it.

Microsoft are finally closing the LIVE curtains on the original Xbox – after almost eight years of dedicated service.

This also applies to Xbox Originals that are 360-compatible AND any applicable titles in the Games On Demand range.


Microsoft announced today it will shut down Xbox Live service for original Xbox consoles and games on April 15, 2010, a move it says "will allow us to continue evolving the Live service."

The termination of service includes all version one Xbox games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. According to Xbox Live program manager Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, the first step in the process will be turning off automatic subscription renewals for users who only access Xbox Live via a first-gen console.

"I want to start by saying this isn’t a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community," said Xbox Live general manager Mark Whitten in a statement.

Notably, major earlier Xbox titles like Crimson Skies, Star Wars: Battlefront, some Splinter Cell games and the first two Halo games will no longer be available for multiplayer play on Live -- "it’s difficult to see that run come to an end," noted Whitten, pointing out that Halo 3, Halo: ODST and the upcoming Halo: Reach will still be available to fans.

Whitten says that changes will be coming to Xbox Live and its community of 23 million that will result in a loss of compatibility with original titles. "As we look down the road, we’ll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360," he says.

"To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games," he adds. Whitten promises that Microsoft will contact users "directly impacted" by the change via their account in the coming weeks with further information.

Anyway, the general consensus has consistently been that Microsoft really got its act together (eventually) in terms of Xbox Live, and thanks to Microsoft’s social media lead for Live, TriXie, we now have some rather staggering statistics to quantify just how popular the service has been since it launched back in 2002. Get this:

"In 7 years, Xbox LIVE members have spent more than 17 BILLION hours on Xbox LIVE. That’s more than 2 hours for every person on the planet,” TriXie posted on Twitter today.

That’s also almost 2 million years, or around 850 hours for every one of the current 20 million-plus Live subscribers. If for some reason those stats aren’t doing it for you, TriXie goes on to say that the Xbox Live Marketplace has seen “more than 1.2 billion downloads of gaming and entertainment content,” which equates to about “100 [downloads] per second!”

Clearly, Microsoft got more than a little right with Xbox Live. Of course, the big question now is: Where will it go from here?

Another important question: How many of those 17 billion hours/1.2 billion downloads do you think you’ve been responsible for?

10 Things you need to know from X10


I am in San Francisco today where we are hosting our X10 media event. This invite only event gives our media friends the chance to hear some news, get updates on some of the upcoming games and (more importantly) get hands on time with some of the titles.



Here, in no specific order, are 10 things you need to know coming out of X10 today:

The Halo Reach multiplayer beta will kick off on May 3. You will be able to access the beta via the Halo 3: ODST game disc.

Dead Rising 2 will release in North America on Aug. 31, Japan on Sept. 2 and Europe on Sept. 3.

Dead Rising: CASE ZERO an exclusive download only on Xbox LIVE, will launch prior to the full game and provide a playable prologue that bridges the story between the two titles.

Alan Wake will launch May 18 in North America and May 21 in Europe. Players can pre-order the title to receive the Bright Falls Bonus Pack, which includes exclusive content like Avatar gear, an Xbox LIVE theme, and a “making of” video.

The Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle will release starting March 9 for $399, and include a 250GB Hard Drive, two Wireless Controllers, exclusive downloadable avatar items and a Standard Edition copy of the game.

Toy Soldiers will kick off the Xbox LIVE Arcade Block Party on March 3

Perfect Dark, Scrap Metal and Game Room will launch this March as a part of the Xbox LIVE Arcade Block Party.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction will release at retailers starting April 13 in North America, April 16 in the United Kingdom, and April 28 in Japan.

Lost Planet 2 will launch in North America and Europe on May 18.

Fable III will be available this holiday.

2K Announces BioShock 2 DLC

2K Games announced today an aggressive post-launch downloadable content plan for BioShock®2 that extends and enhances the single and multiplayer experiences by adding more glimpses into the award-winning world of Rapture. Downloadable content will be made available soon, beginning with the Sinclair Solutions Test Pack, available this March from the Xbox® LIVE Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows–LIVE for 400 Microsoft Points. Future expansions into the world of BioShock 2 are slated to arrive over the coming months and will continue to expand on the stories of the denizens of Rapture.

“The fans who waited in the snow, rain and cold for the midnight launch of BioShock 2 have spoken and their message is that Rapture still has many fascinating stories to tell,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Downloadable content is a key part of our efforts to continue to entice the fans that have made 2K a household name - we intend to deliver single and multiplayer content that respects and expands upon one of the greatest fictional worlds ever created.”

Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package DLC Details/Price Revealed


Details about Infinity Ward's upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 map pack, titled the Stimulus Package, have been revealed via the weekly Xbox LIVE Marketplace podcast (from special guest Robert Bowling). This download contains five maps in total, two of which appeared in the first Modern Warfare title.

This pack will be available to download exclusively on Xbox LIVE starting on March 30, 2010. PS3 and PC owners will have to wait a bit longer but no official release for those systems has been revealed. Activision has confirmed the pack will cost 1200 Microsoft points ($14.99). Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package Smashes LIVE Records


Santa Monica, CA – April 7, 2010 – Microsoft today confirmed that last week’s release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package shattered Xbox LIVE® records as more than one million gamers worldwide downloaded the new map pack from Activision and Infinity Ward in the first 24 hours alone, surpassing the 2.5 million mark within the first week.

The map pack add-on, now available only on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, extends the action-packed online entertainment experience with five multiplayer maps. Modern Warfare 2 Matchmaking Update - The Speed of Light Edition

We’ve opened up the hood on Xbox LIVE and tinkered with how matchmaking works for Modern Warfare 2. It’s not a dramatic change, and the majority of our users won’t see any difference – but a certain subset of you should be happier now.

When you search for a match, our servers sort through the many thousands of available matches to find the “best” potential games for you. We’ve changed how we determine “best”, and your country is now an even more significant factor than it was before. What does this mean to you?

As a gamer, you want to play in a lag-free game. This means that you need to be playing with gamers who are “near you” on the Internet. This is why games like MW2 ping potential matches to determine how close they are and reject them if they’re too far away. If you live somewhere that’s geographically isolated – like Australia, for example – most of the world is not near you. The speed of light just isn’t fast enough (that’s not something I get to say every day).

On behalf of that Australian gamer we’re now trying harder than ever to find a session in their country for them to join. Of course, this requires there to be games hosted in Australia with open slots at the moment they’re looking – but we’ve maximized the odds of those gamers getting together.

While we can’t beat the speed of light (yet), we do think that these changes have made finding matches in MW2 a better experience. If it's helped you out we'd love to hear it!

Account Security for Xbox LIVE

What is Unauthorized Access?
Unauthorized access is the use of your Xbox LIVE account without your knowledge and consent. Unauthorized use can involve the recovery of your Xbox LIVE account on a console that is not yours, or logging into your account via Xbox.com. The unauthorized recovery of your account to another console can result in loss of your access to the service or other consequences that will negatively affect your gaming experience. The unauthorized use of your account can also result in unauthorized charges for purchases made using your account.

How are accounts compromised today?
Your Xbox LIVE account can be compromised in several different ways, most of which can easily be prevented by you. Below are a few examples of situations that can lead to your account being compromised, and steps that you can take to avoid that from happening.

Account Sharing
Sharing your Windows Live ID password is one of the most common ways to have your account compromised and is easily preventable by you. Help ensure the safety of your account by keeping your password secret. Do not share your Windows Live ID password with friends, family members or anyone else, regardless of the reason, as this allows others to access your account. Do not share your Windows Live ID password with others.

Phishing Scams
Phishing is a type of internet scam designed to trick you into revealing your login credentials, such as your Windows Live ID and password, or information about you or your accounts that can be used to gain access to your account. Phishing is typically attempted through spoofed or fake emails, websites or other means of communication. You may be phished via:

Email messages that appear to be from a coworker or friend with links to a web site or asking for information about you or your account(s)
An instant message that appear to come from someone in your friends list with a link to a web site
An email appearing to come from XBOX or Microsoft
A "Spoof" web site, pretending to be an Xbox LIVE website with a Windows Live ID login page
Regardless of the phishing method, the single most important thing to remember is: Do not reveal your login credentials or other information about you or your account(s).

Gamerscore Boosting sites
Sites and advertisements claiming to provide services to "Boost" your Gamerscore often lead to a compromise of your account. Typically, these sites will offer to play on your account to boost your gamer score and will require you to provide your Windows Live ID and password in order to play on your account. To add insult to injury, many of these "services" require some form of payment. In the end, you have paid someone to compromise your account, make unauthorized purchases on your account and have received nothing in return for the payment you provided. These sites are not affiliated with Microsoft, and should be avoided.

Email and Web Site Phishing Example
You are checking your email, and one of your most recent messages appears to be from XBOX offering a free 5000 Microsoft Points to the first 100 people to go to a website linked in the email. Upon clicking the link, you are sent to a web site which appears to be affiliated with XBOX and is asking for your Windows Live ID and password to login. Once you have entered your information and click sign in, you are sent to a confirmation page. Later, you go to the Xbox Live Marketplace and attempt to redeem your points, only to notice that you did not receive any. You have just been "Phished".

What does this mean? The email and website were not from Xbox and whoever is monitoring that web site now has your Windows Live ID and password, and can use this information to compromise your account.

What can you do?

If you have not lost access to your account yet, immediately change your Windows Live ID password.
Change your secret question and secret answer for your account.
Change your alternate email address associated with your Windows Live ID.

Social Engineering
Social Engineering is the process someone uses, through basic conversation or other means, to manipulate individuals into revealing personal information about themselves or their accounts. They may try to engage you in seemingly meaningless conversation that is actually intended to gather information about you or your account. Once the "Phisher" has enough information about you they can use this information to pose as you and attempt to obtain access or make changes to your account. Once they have access to your Xbox LIVE account, the "Phisher" can use your account to perform any action that you could. They'll normally settle for purchasing the maximum number of Points possible on your account and downloading everything that looks interesting to them while sticking you with the bill. Do not reveal personal information about yourself or your accounts.

How to Secure Your Account
The security of your Xbox LIVE account is of the utmost importance to Microsoft. However, your account can only be as secure as you make it. Exercise caution when providing information over the internet. There are a few simple steps you can use to protect yourself when dealing with individuals over the internet.

Do not provide your First or Last name to individuals you do not know over the internet or over Xbox Live. Do not put your full First or last name in your Xbox profile.
Keep your physical address private. The simple act of telling someone what school you go to, or what neighborhood you live in can be enough to locate more information about you. Think of all the personal information you've likely posted to social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace or Windows Live Spaces that can be used to pose as you. Do not put your full physical address in your Xbox profile.
Do not provide your Windows Live ID to individuals who want to email you that you do not know. Set up a second email account at www.hotmail.com to use if people wish to send you an email. Your Windows Live ID should be something you provide to known acquaintances or businesses, not something you provide to anyone who asks for it.
Your job is your business. Keep responses about your career brief, or vague. Do not provide specifics about where you work or who you work for as this information can lead to locating more information about you. Do not put your employer in your Xbox profile.
Be wary of anyone asking you for information about yourself that doesn't have a need for the information.
How to keep your Windows Live ID secure
There are several steps you can take to help keep your Windows Live ID and password secure:

Note: Microsoft and Xbox will never ask you for your Windows Live ID password in email, Instant Messaging or over the phone. Enter your Windows Live ID password only at known Microsoft sites or through the Xbox console.

Create a strong password that includes a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters (e.g. #$%^&*).
Change your password, and secret question and secret answer routinely. When resetting your password, you can choose to make your password expire every 72 days.
Never share your Windows Live ID password with others.
Share your Windows Live ID only with people you know in person, such as friends and business contacts, that you wish to use Messenger to speak with.
Use a Secret Question and Secret Answer that only you would be able to answer.
Do not provide your Windows Live ID to unknown web sites, businesses or message boards.
Do not share your password or personal information with anyone contacting you presenting themselves as a customer support agent or affiliated with Xbox and Microsoft. If you are concerned that the contact might not be legitimate, contact Xbox support directly at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.
