UK Charts: Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the fastest-selling Smash Bros of all time

 

 

  Just Cause 4 debuts at No.6

 

Super Smash Bros Ultimate breaks franchise records to become this week's No.1 UK boxed game.

 

It is the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game released so far, eclipsing the combined launch sales of Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu and Pokémon: Let's Go Eevee.

 

The game's launch sales are 302 per cent higher than the numbers achieved by Super Smash Bros for Wii U and they're 233 per cent higher than Super Smash Bros for 3DS. Launch sales are also 62.5 per cent higher than the Wii game Super Smash Bros Brawl. All of which means Ultimate is the fastest-selling Smash Bros game in the franchise's UK history.

 

It's worth noting that the sales only include physical numbers, so digital downloads of Ultimate have not been counted.

UK physical games market falls 2.8% in 2018

But console sales increase almost 3%

Updated: £770 million was generated by UK boxed video game sales in 2018.

The latest data from GfK/UKIE shows that the revenue generated from physical video games declined 2.8 per cent.

The actual number of boxed games sold last year was 22 million, a bigger drop of 7.1 per cent.

The reason the revenue drop was smaller than the physical drop was due to the sale of more higher priced products, particularly Nintendo Switch games. Indeed, Nintendo Switch is the only platform which increased its software sales year-on-year (unsurprising for a console in its second year, and considering the machine was only on sale for ten months of 2017). Switch game sales increased 90.1 per cent over 2017 (and revenue increased 73.4 per cent).

It's a disappointing result for games retailers, who might have expected a small improvement in sales with the number of major titles released in the latter half of the year. However, key titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, FIFA 19 and Battlefield V sold fewer units than previous titles.

PS4 accounted for 42.2 per cent of all the games sold at retail last year, followed by Xbox One (30.5 per cent) and then Nintendo Switch (24 per cent). The rest was made up of 3DS (2.1 per cent), PC (0.7 per cent), Nintendo Wii (0.2 per cent) and Xbox 360 (0.2 per cent).

Compared to 2017, PS4 games sales drooped 9.7% and Xbox One game sales fell 12.7 per cent.

Note: This is just physical games, digital is not included.

The official hardware numbers have yet to come in, although GamesIndustry.biz understands that more consoles were sold in 2018 than 2017. PS4 remarkably saw an increase in console sales and shifted over one million units, while Nintendo Switch was the big growth area, with a sales increase of more than 20 per cent year-on-year. PS4 remained the No.1 console for the year. In total, just shy of 2.5 million games machines were sold last year in the UK.

The three best-selling games of the year are FIFA 19, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The data comes from the final weekly report of the year, for the week ending December 29th.

In the post-Christmas week, game sales unsurprisingly dropped by a third. The chart remains largely unchanged, with Red Dead Redemption 2 still at No.1, FIFA 19 at No.2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 at No.3. Despite a drop in sales of 29 per cent, Super Smash Bros Ultimate rises a place to No.4.

Dock tror jag både Sony och MS tjänar på att släppa nästa generation om inte en alltför lång framtid. Då finns det nya målgrupper att nå ut till, nästa gen lär vara fullt kompatibel med nuvarande spel.

Update: 2 The updated UK charts are in, and the results are a little different.

New Super Mario Bros U is still No.1, but has sold significantly better than previously reported. Its boxed launch sales are now 56% higher than the original release on Wii U in November 2013.

There is also another new entry in the Top 10 - Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. The game debuts at No.9. 49 per cent of sales were for the Nintendo Switch version, 43 per cent on PS4 and the rest coming on Xbox One.

December 2018 NPD: Nintendo Switch dominates PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Nintendo Switch sales are off the charts. The system was the best-selling gaming console in the United States in December and for all of 2018, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. The Switch sold well throughout the year, but the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gave it a massive boost to close out the last month.

The hybrid home/handheld system outsold the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But it didn’t just outsell them, it had the best December of any console this generation.

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the best-selling game of December 2018 and the fifth best-selling game of 2018, despite digital sales not currently being tracked by The NPD Group,” Piscatella said. “Packaged software launch month dollar sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate exceeded those of the previous best in franchise history, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, by over 70 percent.”

But Smash isn’t just a success by franchise standards. It is the fastest-selling console exclusive game ever tracked by the NPD.

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate set a new launch-month dollar sales record for a platform exclusive in Video Game history,” said Piscatella. “[It exceeded] the launch month dollar sales of 2010’s Halo: Reach.”
