Pokémon’s Developers Talk About Their Console RPG Debut On Switch
video feature

by Ben Hanson on August 08, 2017 at 02:00 PM

One of the most exciting announcements at E3 2017 came from a man sitting behind a desk. The Pokémon Company's Tsunekazu Ishihara announced that Pokémon developer Game Freak is creating a "core RPG title on Nintendo Switch." While visiting Game Freak for our extensive feature in the new issue of Game Informer, we spoke with series director/producer/composer Junichi Masuda and director Shigeru Ohmori about that announcement and what it means for the team to finally respond to the fan outcry wishing for a proper Pokémon RPG on a console.

Watch the interview below to learn more about what this step means for the game's developers and much more.

Rumor

https://arcadegirl64...ghts-5-15-2018/

Q. Emily, you said there’s a Pokemon title releasing on Switch in 2018. What should we expect from it?

In July 2016, Pokémon Go launched, and became a massive phenomenon, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of that year. Then, by 2017, overall download numbers increased to over 750 million a year. This all leads to a much bigger question: What lessons should Game Freak and Nintendo learn from Pokémon Go’s success? How could Switch benefit from Pokémon Go’s success, and how could Pokémon Go benefit from Switch’s success?

After all, it was Nintendo who released “Pokémon Go Plus”, a bluetooth wearable device, developed by Nintendo’s Platform Technology Division, that allows players to enjoy the game without looking at their smartphone. Would Nintendo ever dare to create more Pokémon Go accessories like that — possibly even for the Switch?

Joe Merrick, the creator of Serebii.net, once wrote an article on Nintendo Life titled “What Pokémon Go and the Pokemon series could learn from each other.”

As we wait for an announcement on the upcoming Pokémon title, which will be revealed before the end of this month, think about what Pokémon Go might mean for the future of the Pokémon series. I suspect that the naming/branding for this year’s Pokémon Switch title (there’s two versions) might raise a few eyebrows.

During a special Pokémon press conference in Tokyo today, The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo announced three new ways to play Pokémon for Nintendo Switch™—Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, and the free-to-start Pokémon Quest. With the addition of these new titles, Pokémon is broadening the scope of video game offerings from the franchise to appeal to its wide variety of fans at all player levels. Pokémon also announced that the next introduction to its popular core RPG series, which was teased last year at E3, will arrive in late 2019 on Nintendo Switch for the first time.
Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
With Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, Pokémon is inviting fans on a new journey by taking them back to a familiar setting. Inspired by Pokémon Yellow, which was originally released in Japan on Nintendo’s Game Boy in 1998, these two new titles feature many of the intuitive gameplay functions offered to players in the hugely popular Pokémon GO and are designed for players taking their first steps into the Pokémon video game world. Trainers will embark on an epic adventure set in the iconic Kanto region joined by their trusty Pikachu in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Eevee in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! They feature brand new gameplay to make the most of the unique capabilities of Nintendo Switch, such as throwing Poké Balls to catch Pokémon by swinging Joy-Con™ controllers, as well as the opportunity for family and friends to battle and explore together in a new two-player mode. The games were unveiled in partnership with GAME FREAK, the games’ developers and original creators of the Pokémon video game franchise.
“With the launch of Pokémon GO in 2016 and the global sensation that ensued, millions of new players were introduced to the world of Pokémon,” said Junichi Masuda, director at GAME FREAK inc. “For many people, Pokémon GO was their first experience with the Pokémon brand, so we have crafted these two new titles to be an accessible entry point to our core RPG series while giving our longtime fans a new way to play Pokémon.”
The connection between these two new titles and Pokémon GO doesn’t end there – literally. GAME FREAK and The Pokémon Company teamed up with Niantic to bring next-level innovation by offering players the ability to connect their Pokémon GO to their Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! game. Players can catch Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region in Pokémon GO and then transfer them into their Nintendo Switch adventure. Something special will also be coming to the world of Pokémon GO, making the connection between both games even more appealing for Trainers. Details for this will be revealed in the near future.
The Poké Ball Plus* a device that can be used to play Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! in place of a Joy-Con or alongside Pokémon GO instead of the Pokémon GO Plus, was also unveiled, continuing the innovative ways to connect the games. The Poké Ball Plus features motion controls, lights up with a variety of colors, vibrates, and plays sounds. When catching a Pokémon in the Nintendo Switch games, players will be able to feel it moving within the device. It also does more than function as a controller—using the Poké Ball Plus, players can bring one of their Pokémon from Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! with them as they explore the real world, giving Trainers the opportunity to spend time with favorite Pokémon even when they’re not playing the game. Additionally, Trainers can receive a variety of rewards once Pokémon are returned to the Nintendo Switch games.
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will launch on 16 November 2018, exclusively on Nintendo Switch. The Poké Ball Plus will be available at participating retailers on the same day.

Det är det som är tanken hos Nintendo  ;). Ett introduktionsspel för Pokemon Go-fansen är smart, speciellt som spelet fortfarande spelas av många.

New financial reports made public by Japan’s government reveal that The Pokémon Company has netted a total of $80.8 million for their most recent fiscal year.
While this is figure is substantially lower than the $145.60 million that the company made in their last fiscal year, the year that the mobile game was released, it shows that The Pokémon Company is still generating a ton of revenue from the mobile app. To put things in perspective, the year before Pokémon Go released the company netted $5.7 million dollars — a sum that seems measly in comparison.
Despite the majority of players falling off the wagon a few months after the app’s initial release, current estimates predict that over twenty-million people still play the game regularly.

Plus gen1  ;)

Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda on Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee, update on online

Posted on May 30, 2018 by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

IGN has shared a few new comments from Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda about the new titles Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee. Here’s the latest information:

On wanting to simplify things…

“For our first entry on the Nintendo Switch, I really wanted to do something more kind of simplified, something that really anyone could enjoy. I think the reason for this is to get more Switches into the hands of younger kids and more casual players, not just players who are really interested in hardcore games or are really gamers first and foremost.”

– When asked if effort values and individual values will return in Let’s Go, Masuda said “we wanted to make it more simplified,” and to “please wait for more details”
– There will be some differences in how you level up, raise, and train your Pokemon
– No comment on Pokemon Bank compatibility
– No word on whether Pokemon from Let’s Go will be transferable to the 2019 games
– Masuda said he and his team worked very hard to make Pikachu and Eevee as cute and expressive as possible, and are still working on this now

On how co-op works…

“The bottom line… is that it really is to make the second player a support role. So the idea is that it’s the first player’s adventure. If you only have one Switch in the house and there are siblings, each sibling can start their own game.”

“This may not be a super great answer, but I don’t want to go into the exact mechanics of what happens if someone joins in mid-way.”

– Masuda wanted to add an option to make it playable with parents, siblings, or friends
– If a Pokemon has been sent to Pokemon Let’s Go, it will be unable to return to Pokemon GO
– Niantic’s John Hanke says when trainers connect their GO and Switch accounts, you can do more than just transfer Pokemon, but they want to save some surprises
– Masuda confirmed that if a Pokemon is Shiny in Pokemon GO, it will still be Shiny in Pokemon Let’s Go
– Unknown how a Pokemon’s stats from Pokemon GO are treated when transferred, and awaiting for information on if they will remain the same, or alter, when recaptured in Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee
– With the Poke Ball Plus, when carrying a Pokemon, it will light up, make noise, and move
– Masuda also said some other things will happen when carrying Pokemon, but he didn’t want to get into the details
– Masuda said his team worked especially hard on making use of the Joy-Con’s six gyro sensors to ensure it felt right when a Pokemon is caught, and this technology was transferred to the Poke Ball Plus
– You should be able to feel the Pokemon rock “realistically” in the Poke Ball Plus when it’s caught

Lastly, we have one more report on online usage. There unfortunately was a high degree of confusion here to due conflicted reports coming out of last night’s event in Tokyo, particular from the Q&A session. But after speaking with Masuda, IGN reports that battling and trading online are both available online and locally. Online ranked battles will not be available, however. There are also no plans to use Nintendo Switch Online. GameSpot is reporting similar information, so we’re hoping that this has been settled once and for all.

- Gamefreak officially consecutively stated in the media conference that it is a main core series game. The 2019 game is as well.

- Gamefreak have targeted this towards newer / casual fans.

- Gamefreak officially stated that core games will come in two supplements for the future, Games like this for the newer crowd and your typical Pokémon game for hardcore fans. The 2019 release is geared for hardcore fans. This is targeted to introduce new players into the franchise adopting some familiarity with the ever successful Pokémon Go.

- The 2019 game won’t have casualisation because of this game.

- Pokémon Go isn’t required to play

- The Accessory isn’t required to play.

- Gamefreak and Serebii have given official confirmation that the games have online activity. Their was a mistranslation earlier in the stream which caused hysteria among fans.

- Pokémon can use 4 attacks just like in the main core games rather than Pokémon Go’s. The attack system mirrors the main core games.

- Pokémon Attacks have the standard animations from the main core games as we see with hyper beam, Swift, seismic toss and the like. They do not function like Pokémon go. The animations are crisper and cleaner.

- Wild Pokemon have levels that mirror the original wild Pokémon from Kanto, we see this with the mt moon clefairy being the same level as the original gen 1 games and the other overworld Pokémon matching the rest of the wild Pokémon of mt moon.

- Wild Pokemon have both levels and Cp. The Cp likely is a modifier from transfer and for familiarity since the game is targeted for that audience in mind.

- Wild Pokemon are caught like in go.

- The accessory makes it easier to catch Pokémon

- Standard core series items can be used in the wild before throwing a ball to increase or decrease capture.

- Items can be used in battles.

- Double Battles are back

- Players can co op with other players at any time freely

- Co Oped players can participate in story mode battles and help you battle in double battles. You can do the entire adventure together or separate. Perfect for couples and siblings.

- Co Oped players can help to catch Pokémon, both getting the spoils.

- The game features Pokémon centres.

- Wild Pokemon appears in the overworld like standard JRPG games meaning you can catch what you want, no more spending hours trying to get that elusive Clefairy, meaning you can enjoy the action more.

- The story mode features Team Rocket, they use some new Pokémon they didn’t use previously giving variety to their typical rosters

- Mewtwo plays a part in the story unlike in the originals

- The new device is an OPTIONAL seperate tool much the pokewalker. It’s not needed to play the game, but rewards you like the pokewalker allowing you to take your partner Pokémon for walks and getting rewards.

- You can trade Pokémon between Pokémon Go and the Switch at will and mix and match at your desire

- Transferred Pokémon go to a Pokémon pal park clone, exactly the same as gen 4.

- All pokemon follow you like in HGSS

- Pokémon Amie clone returns

- You can dress up and stylise your pikachu and eevee as you want without restrictions

- The story Pikachu and Eevee cannot evolve exactly like Pokémon Yellow. Others however can

- The standard Pokédex Returns, no more rotom lol

- As revealed by Gamefreak and Serebii, a brand new Pokémon is being offered for players as an exclusive.

What we learned from the official QA Gamefreak meeting

The online features use their own seperate features.

The core game in 2019 WONT USE ANY features from Pokémon Go

The special Pokémon exclusive to this game is brand new

The 2019 game is confirmed to use all features from sun and moon and XY

Gamefreak confirmed FOR THIS GAME ONLY there will be minor differences in how you level up, raise & train Pokémon in Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee, citing they wanted to simplify it

The games have infinite save files with save files being tied to user accounts.

The games don’t store save data on the cartridge.

Pokémon breeding is unavailable

Any Pokémon among the first 151 available in the game that could carry a trainer are rideable

Pokémon boss Junichi Masuda on keeping hardcore players happy, borrowing from Pokémon Go, and Let's Go's story

"I'm always concerned that we take Pokémon too far, that it's no longer approachable."

By Chris Tapsell. 3/06/2018

Pick out a feature from most Pokémon games and, chances are, Junichi Masuda probably had something to do with it. The long-time director, producer, designer and composer has done everything from designing the intricacies of breeding shiny Pokémon in the main series, to writing the music for Pokémon Go.

On Wednesday, Eurogamer was present at a brief Q and A with Masuda-san and other members of the European press, shortly after the whirlwind conference in which the Pokémon Company revealed its plan for not one, but three games, at various stages of development, to arrive over the next year and a half.

The curious mobile-Switch hybrid Pokémon Quest, as well as the upcoming, sort-of spinoff Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, and the mysterious untitled Pokémon RPG that's due in late 2019 are all being developed, simultaneously, by Game Freak; its first mobile game, first HD home console game (and first with co-op, and cross-play of a sort), and then its first full RPG on the Switch. The studio, I'm told, has grown to well over three hundred people in size - it's an ambitious plan even still. Read on for a full transcript of Masuda-san's chat with us and the European media.

Can you elaborate on the smartphone and switch connectivity?

Masuda: So in terms of how the connection works, we wanted to make it as simple as possible, so on the Switch there's a connect button, you press the button on it, and then in Pokémon Go on your smartphone you press the connect button. So it's a very simple Bluetooth connection.

In terms of what you can do with the connection, right now you can send Pokémon from Pokémon Go to Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee - and they don't go straight into your collection or your party, they enter into an area that's kind of like a Safari park type thing where you can see the Pokémon moving around in there, and you can actually go there and interact with them and catch them. But there are also some incentives to move a lot of the same Pokémon from Go - the same species - and there are some sort of mini games you can play if you do that.

Do Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee work like the main series, with exclusive Pokémon to each game? And will there be trading between the two?

Masuda: Similarly to the main series Pokémon games up until now, we've created two versions, Pikachu and Eevee, to have different Pokémon appear in both games, to really facilitate trading and make people want to trade with each other. So, there is that wireless trading and that kind of gameplay around trading with each other so you can complete your Pokédex.

How does this fit into the series, when it seems like such a clean break? Are there any references at all in Let's Go to other games that have come out? Do any old characters return?

Unfortunately all I can say is that they're based on the Pokémon Yellow version, and more details besides that are... something that I hope people will look forward to.

Can we learn more about the assessment you made about Pokémon Go and its success, and are there other things you've picked up from Pokémon Go to include in Let's Go?

Masuda: So in terms of first about how I assess the success of Pokémon Go, of course it makes me very happy to see Pokémon Go be such a huge success and such a phenomenon - and really we think it introduced a lot of people to Pokémon, the idea of catching Pokémon, the idea of a Pokéball. And because of that we really wanted to expand on that kind of idea of what a Pokémon RPG could be, something that's broader, for everyone, and that's why we work on these games. So that's one assessment on Pokémon Go.

With that in mind obviously there are so many people that played Pokémon Go - I think we reached 800 million downloads - so we wanted to create a fun experience for them but at the same time really make a fun game for fans that have enjoyed the RPGs up until now, so it's really kind of merging those two audiences into one game that we all can have fun and play.

I'm trying to think of other things we picked up from Pokémon Go... I can't say about any other gameplay ideas that we picked up from Pokémon Go, but one of the things we really focused on was that experience of allowing for, for example, parents to kind of go out and catch Pokémon for Pokémon Go and then give some of those to maybe their kid, who's playing Let's Go Pikachu on Switch for example. So that experience is one of the things we wanted to really take a lot of care over for these games.

And there's probably a lot of things, I guess more subconsciously, that did come into the development of these games - of course I worked on Pokémon Go, for example I created the music for both of them [Go and Let's Go] so, there's probably some things that maybe I'm not thinking about that did affect the Switch games.

How do you think the core RPG players will react to the Let's Go games? I know Pokémon Go was immensely popular but it had quite a mixed reaction amongst more 'hardcore' players - how do you appease those players and is it more a case that they should wait to 2019 for the game they're after?

Masuda: So the first thing I can say is that... I've been the director on the main series Pokémon RPGs - most of them, up until now - and there are a lot of kind of core tenets or rules of the series that I've never broke up until now, for example the whole idea of the flow of going into a battle against wild Pokémon, reducing their health and then catching them. That was one of the things that we just never wanted to change but, with these games specifically, I wanted to create a new experience for kids and with this time I decided to shift that towards more of a kind of casual, lighter experience. So that's one of the things I wanted to do.

And one of the things, for example, up until now in the tall grass you couldn't see which Pokémon were in there so, a lot of players would kind of avoid the tall grass in their journeys, up until now, and one of the big changes this time is that you can actually see the Pokémon before you actually run into and encounter them so, it's kind of changed the dynamic to much more of a proactive experience, where you're going out and seeking Pokémon.

So for me, having worked on the Pokémon main series games, and Pokémon Go, both the players who have enjoyed our RPGs until now, all the fans are extremely important to me - but also the people who played Pokémon Go, and that was their first Pokémon game, they're also extremely important to me, and what I really want to do with these games is prevent both of these types of players from going in different directions, and I'm hoping that these games will kind of bring them together.

So what would make me happiest would be if Pokémon Go players and traditional Pokémon RPG players actually come together and are throwing out Pokéballs together, either with the Joy-Con or using their smartphones, and really enjoying Pokémon together.

And that's also one of the things I just mentioned about the parent maybe going out and catching Pokémon and giving them to their children, and sharing that catching experience.

Just to quickly follow up on that, I know you can't talk too much about the 2019 RPG but can you tell me when the decision was first made to develop that game as well as the Let's Go games? Did you decide to do LG first and then the 2019 game? And was that decision made to mitigate the risk of the more hardcore, long-term players maybe not being so into it?

Masuda: So it definitely wasn't like a risk-avoiding thing. We knew that we wanted to create another Pokémon "series", as we call them, for all the fans that have really enjoyed the games until now. But the games that we're talking about for 2019 we've been working on those for a while, the same with Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee - part of it is because there's a lot of functionality with the Nintendo Switch and we really want players to really experience what there is to offer here so, we're making two different games at the same time.

And specifically for these games, me personally I really want more kids to pick up and play with the Nintendo Switch, that's really the goal for me.

Related to that, looking forward, do you envisage there being two series of Pokémon games, say a Let's Go series and a main series like Sun and Moon - are there going to be two or are they going to come together again?

Masuda: So I'd say there's a possibility of that, should the games sell really well and obviously a lot of people play them, but right now we're really focusing on the development, and just getting a lot of people to play the games in the first place!

You said earlier there were a few things that never changed in Pokémon Go but have changed in Let's Go - with Nintendo choosing to make others like Mario and Zelda more of an open world, for the next Pokémon did you want to experiment with more of an open world, with exploration and roaming?

Masuda: So with the Pokémon games I'm sure you all know we're always trying to make them fun appealing for players of all ages, not just to older players and not just to kids. So, I can't really commit either way but, if we find a way - I think it's possible - if we were to find a way to preserve the fun and kind of broad appeal of Pokémon, and also have that kind of more open gameplay, then that is one possibility. It's hard to say right now.

So that's definitely, those type of questions, I always - I wouldn't say worried - but in some way I'm always concerned that we go and take it too far, so it's no longer approachable? I used to be a fan of top-down shooting games, like R-Type [points to a nearby arcade machine], and as time went on that shooting genre just kept pursuing that sort of more difficult, more complicated direction and it just got to the point where people couldn't enjoy them as much and they just weren't as approachable as they used to be. So I just want to make sure that, at Pokémon, we don't make that same kind of - I don't want to say mistake but, go down that same direction.

You said that the game is inspired by Pokémon Yellow from 1999? Can we find the same story as it was then?

Masuda: So one thing I can say is that the game world, the overworld, the whole map, is very true to the original Pokémon Yellow games. And also the story kind of sticks to the story beats from Pokémon Yellow.

One of the kind of reasons behind that was, with the games being released 20 years ago, I kind of imagined that maybe some parents who played Yellow version when they were kids, will now have kids of their own and they can kind of remember that adventure and maybe give some hints or tips to their kids that are playing the game.

Maybe some other fun things, for example the first Gym Leader, Brock - a lot of kids who maybe grew up with the animated series and not the original Red and Blue series, they may not even know he was a gym leader, so there might be some fun discoveries there.

We know the Poké Ball Plus vibrates and makes sounds - can you elaborate on that some more?

Masuda: I can only say there's some fun things, if you do put a Pokémon in the ball and walk around with it, without saying details, but one cool thing if you put your partner Pokémon - so maybe your Pikachu - inside of it, I think maybe there's some extra things that makes it feel as though the Pokémon is really inside the ball. But I can't give any details.

So it was actually in the video for example if you shake it, it'll actually sounds like it's in there, so things like that - and also some things we haven't revealed, that are cool that affect the gameplay if you walk around with it.

Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee confirms Mega Evolutions

Posted on August 8, 2018 by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

This month’s CoroCoro has started to leak, and has provided substantial information about Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee.

The big takeaway is that Mega Evolutions are officially in the game. Players can activate the feature when they have the Key Stone and the Pokemon’s associated Mega Stone.

CoroCoro also shows off Vermilion City Gym and that Lt. Surge once again has a Raichu. Here’s a look:

MHB:s recension

Varför just mediamarketbundeln?
