TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Toshiba Corp aims to sell around 3 mln players compatible with the HD DVD next-generation optical disc format in the current year to March 2008, up sharply from the 250,000 units it sold last fiscal year, the Nikkei financial daily reported, without citing sources.
The global market for next-generation DVD players is seen at 4-5 mln units in fiscal 2007, with Toshiba seeking a 60-70 pct share, the Nikkei said.
To better compete with companies promoting the rival Blu-ray Disc format, Toshiba plans to continue with its strategy of cutting prices and releasing low-priced players in the US, the largest market, according to the newspaper.
The company slashed prices of both entry-level and midrange players by 100 usd there this month, bringing price tags to 399 usd and 499 usd, respectively.

Most recent sales data shows formats almost neck and neck.
April 25, 2007 - The recent pres-release-bickering between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps isn't terribly new, though most previous spats have gone down in the midst of large trade shows. The most recent squabbling began when HD-DVD celebrated the format's birthday by announcing that 100,000 dedicated players had been sold, preserving the format's hardware lead, not counting the PlayStation 3 (story). Blu-ray fired back, announcing that Blu-ray movie sales had reached the 1,000,000-sold milestone, and added a little salt to the wound with the data that 70-percent of Q1 HD-movie sales were thanks to Blu-ray (story).
Today, HD-DVD's representatives from Webersh & Wick public relations wrote to IGN Gear directly with updated HD-DVD news. According to their figures, HD-DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold. The firm points out that pre-orders of Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy will propel HD-DVD over the million-mark quite shortly. Representatives also stated that hardware sales have continued with strength in April, maintaining a 4 to 1 margin over Blu-ray.
Though consumers would likely benefit to a resolution to this format war sooner rather than later, it's looking like the struggle may continue for quite some time. The upshot of it all, however, will be a long and amusing PR battle. Honestly, it's rare in technology to get this much back-and-forth in claims, counter claims, dueling sales statistics, and one sided announcements of victory, so kick back and enjoy it, maybe while rocking some undeniably pretty 1080p movies on the format of your choice.

In an unsual promotional effort for Blu-ray, Sony Europe has launched a tongue-in-cheek website called "The Museum of Low Resolution."
The flash-based interactive website is designed to showcase the capabilities of Blu-ray by imagining a world where low-res television is a distant memory, worthy of its own museum. Needlesstosay, in Sony's vision of the future, there is only one high-def disc format, and that format is Blu-ray.
Visitors to the site can tour three virtual exhibits: "Time Tunnel," "The Science Room," and "The Art of HD." All three rooms look at a series of fictional events leading up to the development of high-def disc, but "The Art of HD" room would seem to be the heart of the project, visually explaining the Blu-ray disc format through various interactive exhibits, ranging from a giant TV sculpture demonstrating the disc's resolution power, to a robotic arm sculpture highlighting its storage capacity.
Sony Europe developed the site with the appropriately-named London design firm, Hi-ReS.

Talk about a huge pile driver to the ps3's head! Sams Club members can now get a HDDVD drive for $72.54, yep as you can see above, sams club members are offloading the hddvd drive for 72$. Don't forget this baby works with the 360 and your PC!
On top of that for $72 this and the fact that Walmart has ordered those 2 million low cost hddvd players to go onsale soon. Does this mean that HDDVD is getting ready to MASSIVELY flood the market??? I mean at 72$ this babys hit the main pricepoint for a usb addon drive (for pc and 360) and with a 200$ hddvd standalone that's a HUGE deal! As hitting 200$ and under while a competitor is over 500-700$ normally is a huge point to whos getting ready to win the war.

Best Summary I have of the situation - from several sources
This is my best understanding of the situation. If you don't like it or are looking for concrete absolute confirmation, its not here, as no one I talked or messaged with can publicly confirm anything, and Wal-Mart probably won't say anything until these things are in stores. Some things are in progress and will have adjustments as time goes on.
This is based on information from several trusted sources. The mods have information on some of them. No one will go on the record, but the information is consistent from many sources.
If you think I am full of it, this won't change your mind. If you generally trust me as providing the best information I can to AVS, then realize I'm putting some credibility on the line here. Its possible I am being feed innacurate information, but unlikely as several unrelated people all basically agree. That being said, obviously situations can change in the future.
Ok, disclaimers being done, here's how I understand it from people who know about it.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The Fuh Yuan base deal is done. They will be producing HD DVD players for Wal-Mart.
No one says the deal hasn't been done yet or that the initial order will not be completed. The posting on their web site is a bit confusing, and may be an attempt to stop people form contacting them directly.
I don't know about the significance of the recent post on their site, but it does not affect the base deal. That is in progress and sub-contracts have been made and finalized.
They are looking for the best price and availability they can give to Wal-mart for deliveries above the base amount.
Initial confirmed order quantities are over 1 Million units, its probable the 2 Million units initially mentioned in the first Fuh Yuan press release is the base number. Fuh Yuan has been asked to give quotes and estimates on how quickly numbers above the base quantity can be delivered next year.
Early estimates of full scale mass production in August were evaluated and found to be somewhat aggressive and possibly over optimistic. Physical assembly or staffing or the physical facility is not the issue, a short delay is SoC software related. Plant will be producing at that time but full scale production may slip until October, with initial batch quantities of 5-10 thousand units required to be available in the first week or so of October.
Recent meetings between Fuh Yuan and Broadcom engineers revised the schedule and engineering considerations have lead to the late August to early October production schedule slippage.
Fuh Yuan is making the chassis and loader and doing assembly.
Decoder chip and other silicon being supplied by Broadcom, probably the reference design announced at CES, or a derivative.
The optical unit is based on a Toshiba HD DVD unit design and is being manufactured by the TDK hardware unit under contract.
Wal-Mart has certified the China Great Wall manufacturing facility for Wal-Mart (probably for compliance with stuff like personnel management and environmental considerations) .
Probable limited production runs available in mid-late Oct in some selected Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart under control obviously of when they first start to sell the players, but some limited production available to them in October.
I have conflicting information on when the initial 2 million orders is scheduled to be delivered by. One source says all by end of 2007. Several others say, some in October, a lot (around 1 million or so ) by EOY 2007, with the rest in early 2008. The quantity produced by the end of the year may be dependent on the production throughput of the plant which is not known yet.
Its possible that under 50% of the initial 2 M units may be available by the end of the year. Big volume is expected in 2008 and as of now more than 50% of the 2M order is expected after the EOY.
Last Friday Fuh Yuan had a major meeting with Broadcom, perhaps feedback from Broadcom was the reason for the August to October full scale production delay. Broadcom may have to spin the chip or may have a delay in the completion of the embedded software or perhaps Broadcom wanted a bit of room in the overall software schedule.
Several other SoC player deals for HD DVD are now in the works. This isn't the only deal being worked on, though it is one of the largest and obviously significant because it involves Wal-Mart.
All major SoC guys like Broadcom and Sigma are working now on HD DVD solutions. Sigma's Blu-ray SoC solution is available but any units using it will not be in production before this Fuh Yuan device hits the shelves.
My sources for this include several prominent hardware guys in the industry that have been known as being creditable before and are both involved and non-involved in some aspect of the deal. The mods here know some names, but I cannot reveal the sources.

"Despite the major improvements in Blu-ray discs and players lately, I have to say that, based on my experience with the Toshiba HD-XA2. I think the HD-XA2 is among the best high-def disc players on the market today."
"If you've got a high definition flat panel or rear projection set, or better yet a true "Big Picture" front projection system, then you owe it to yourself to check out the HD-XA2. It takes standard DVD playback to the next level, and its HD-DVD playback capabilities will allow you to see a glimpse of what your display device can really do."

HD DVD sales are less than 2,000 behind those of Blu-ray Disc
In a recent battle of press releases, the Blu-ray Association announced that sales of Blu-ray Disc titles have surpassed one million units in less than a year since the format’s introduction. In a statement from the HD DVD Promotional Group received by DailyTech, it appears that sales of HD DVD movies are not far behind those of Blu-ray Disc.
According to stats cited by the HD DVD Group, which are based on recent data from Nielsen Videoscan, Universal, Warner and Toshiba, HD DVD titles are now at 998,059 units sold, representing less-than 2,000 units shy of Blu-ray’s announced figures. Of course, while the next-generation formats fight over claims of collective sales of one million, a single DVD title could easily sell over one million units on its own.
“Yes, these are still small numbers compared to DVD sales, but point being – HD DVD is still very much in the game,” read the HD DVD Group statement. “As more HD DVD titles hit the market (take a look at pre-order rankings for Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy) and as prices for HD DVD hardware continue to drop below the $400 mark, we're seeing more equal week to week movie sales ratios between the formats.”
The HD DVD Promotional Group announced last week that it has sold more than 100,000 standalone players in the U.S. since introduction, and claims to be currently outselling dedicated Blu-ray players by a four-to-one margin.
“Why are we just focusing on dedicated players? So we can compare stats on similar hardware with similar attach rates,” explained the HD DVD Group. “That's a key driver of software sales and shows that price is clearly a factor for consumers in deciding to buy dedicated high definition hardware.”
“Bottom line is that HD DVD is staying focused across the board on creating great products at great prices,” the Group added.

Lieberfarb accuses Japanese giant of behaving "like Samurai"
Lite dålig pr om BD så att säga
Addex kommer att fråga efter länken så
The former president of Warner Home Video has criticised Sony for the tactics it has employed in the battle of the next-gen DVD formats - and for dragging home entertainment companies into the console war.
In a speech delivered at the Perspectives in European Video conference, Warren Lieberfarb said: "If I put Blu-Ray in PlayStation and I don't license it to Microsoft for Xbox and I get all the studios to only publish in PlayStation, I'll beat Microsoft in the next-generation games market."
"We've been sucked into PlayStation versus Xbox."
Lieberfarb went on to compare Sony's strategies to those used by Samurai swordsmen, stating: "If you ever read The Art of War, you will see all of Sony's moves, including taking all its enemies in the same tent and then leaving them empty-handed. These are things that they have done historically."
"They did the same thing to Matsushita and Betamax, they did the same thing to Matsushita on compact disc, they did the same thing to Matsushita on the digital video camcorder," Lieberfarb continued.
"They compete like Samurai. It isn't the way we compete in the West."
Lieberfarb said that although it may look like Blu-Ray is set to win the battle of the next-gen formats, the war is not over yet.
"Hollywood blew it. They got duped. They could have created the format that optimized their creative interests. It looks like we lost, because there are six studios supporting Blu-Ray and only three supporting HD-DVD. But you know, there's always surprises," Lieberfarb stated.
He concluded by urging the industry to join Microsoft and Toshiba in supporting the HD-DVD format, telling the audience: "Convergence is here, everything is digital, the Internet is going to deliver video, you are going to want to pass information from one device to another and HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray is really the first battle in the issue of who controls the home."
