Postad 29 April 2007 - 16:14

First Direct-to-HD Feature 'Bell Witch' to Debut This Summer on Blu-ray, HD DVD
In a next-gen first, the direct-to-video horror film 'Bell Witch: The Movie' will make its exclusive debut on Blu-ray and HD DVD this August. Starring 'Friday the 13th's "Queen of the Slashers" Betsy Palmer and directed by helmer S. Shane Marr, the indie scarefest was produced with high-definition cameras, and completed entirely in the digital realm. Though the major studios and other independents routinely release films directly to video without a theatrical release, so far there has been no such releases exclusive to high-definition. 'Bell Witch' will make history as the first direct-to-Blu-ray and HD DVD premiere movie when it debuts simultaneously on both formats on August 15 via distributor Big River Productions, three weeks ahead of its subsequent release on standard-def DVD and to high-definition cable networks on September 1. "We shot 'Bell Witch' in 24p 1080 HD back in 2002," said Marr via a press statement. "But we decided to hold the film until it could be released in HD so that people could see it as it was meant to be viewed." No specs, supplemental details nor pricing is yet available for 'Bell Witch: The Movie.' But we'll certainly keep you posted as soon as further details on this notable release are officially announced.

MPAA Calls For DRM That Allows For "Managed Copying"
MPAA Chairman Dan Glickman said that the industry supported legitimate copying and called for a common ground on digital rights management technology. Speaking at a Digital Rights Management Conference sponsored by LexisNexis and Variety magazine on Monday, MPAA's Chairman said that MPAA is "committed to delivering entertainment to consumers whenever and wherever they want?in flexible ways?on their preferred platforms and devices." However, Glickman said that the industry remained committed to the use of digital rights management and that the "Managed Copy" option is the goal. This should be applied to both HD DVD and Blu-Ray disc formats, as well as in online downloads and streams, according to Glickman. "We wholeheartedly support allowing consumers to make authorized copies of the content they purchase," Glickman said. "Consumers should be able to enjoy authorized DVD content on their home networks?on portable devices?at their convenience. Next, we fully and wholly embrace interoperability. We believe that consumers who come by their content legally should be able to enjoy it on any device." Managed Copy is included in the AACS specifications for high-def formats and it would offer consumers the ability to move content from disc to PCs and portable devices, while it does not enable copying. But the feature has not yet been implemented by the HD formats. This is expected to change by the end of the year, according to Glickman. "We expect to be able to make this happen for HD DVDs hopefully this year," Glickman said. He added that managed Copy should be also be efficiently applied to standard DVDs. "Standard definition may take a bit longer since we need to work with the technology community to unleash its full potential. But we are in agreement on the outcome we wish to see: Consumers should be able to enjoy authorized DVD content on their home networks?on portable devices?at their convenience." Yes, Indeed Icke konsument-vänlig http://www.managingr.../bluray_bd.html "BD+ is essentially programmable security. Each Blu-ray device provides the ability to run a virtual machine (VM) that is programmed by Content Code that is distributed on each optical disc. The Content Code may be title specific. When executed, the Content Code evaluates the security environment of the player and if no compromises are detected, authorizes playback of the media content on the Blu-ray disc. After AACS decrypts the media content, BD+ applies a second decryption process, the Media Transform. Only after both AACS and BD+ decryption is the media viewable. Not only is the player programmed by the information on the Blu-ray disc, but the VM and Content Code can apparently provide updates to player firmware in the event the firmware had been compromised." http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=135 "BD-Plus (BD+) is an encryption system completely separate from AACS, which helps prevent Blu-ray discs from being copied to a user's computer far beyond what AACS was designed to do. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), originally called the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association of America, is a non-profit trade association based in the United States which was formed to advance the interests of movie studios. Its members consist of the "big six" major Hollywood studios: Buena Vista (The Walt Disney Company), Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures (Viacom -- which bought DreamWorks in February 2006), 20th Century Fox (News Corporation), Universal Studios (NBC Universal), and Warner Bros. (Time Warner). The organization produces the well-known voluntary film rating system. mm Redigerat av diabolo, 30 April 2007 - 19:26. Postad 30 April 2007 - 12:47

Digital Video Essentials (HD DVD)
Overall Grade 4,5/5 Final Thoughts 'Digital Video Essentials' has remained the premiere calibration tool for home theater enthusiasts over the past two decades for good reason. It is simply a must-own if you care about achieving the optimal quality from your gear. Even better, this newly-retooled HD DVD version eliminates most of the navigational hassles that plagued previous editions. With the average high-def-equipped home theater now costing in the thousands to put together, how can you not spend another $30 bucks to ensure that your investment achieves its full potential? This is one release that most home theater enthusiasts truly cannot live without. Postad 30 April 2007 - 19:28

Wal-Mart considers 2M HD DVD player buy
APRIL 30 A week after Chinese manufacturer Fuh Yuan said it had received an order from Wal-Mart for 2 million low-priced HD DVD players, Fuh Yuan put a note on its site saying it’s not a done deal. “We are sorry to correct the statement that we have 2 million HD DVD players order [sic] from Wal-Mart and manufactured by China Great Wall Group," Fuh Yuan said in a statement on its Web site. "The actuality is that we had not received yet [sic]. We are asked to provide the schedule to Wal-Mart and cost to determine the quantity even more than 2 million, if the cost is good enough and timing is correct. So the capacity is under consideration. Any qualified manufactured base group will be welcome." Reports surfaced on the AVS Forum April 20 that the company had closed a deal with the largest U.S. retailer. Due to its size and low-price strategy, Wal-Mart could easily help sway the war between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc if it were to bring in one format in large quantities over the other. So far, the retailer has brought in Blu-ray and HD DVD players and movies. Wal-Mart wouldn’t comment directly on whether it would or wouldn’t bring in the low-cost Chinese players, but the chain released a statement to Video Business that seems to leave the door open. “Today we sell both Blu-ray and HD DVD in our stores nationwide (approx. 750 stores). As with all new technologies, we are committed to providing the best value on products that customers choose as most relevant to them. With new industry developments, we will make shifts in our selections as customer preferences evolve and they vote with their purchase,” the statement said. “We expect that as prices decrease and new elements are added in the coming months that consumers will choose which format will dominate, and that could happen by the end of this year.” Toshiba has already cut its price on its bottom-line HD DVD player to $399, while Sony has said it will cut the price on its Blu-ray player to $600 this summer. Even cheaper players are expected in the second half of the year when Chinese manufacturers are forecast to begin producing low-cost HD DVD players for sale in North America. HD DVD backers believe lower-priced players will speed up sales on their format, helping them to knock out Blu-ray. Redigerat av diabolo, 01 May 2007 - 06:07. Postad 01 May 2007 - 11:14
