LG's 2nd-Gen Dual Format HD DVD, Blu-ray Player Due in October

http://www.highdefdi..._in_October/929

Nine months after it debuted its first dual format HD DVD/Blu-ray player at CES, LG has officially announced its new updated player, due in October.

Unlike its predecessor, the new player -- dubbed the BH200 -- will support both BD-Java and HDi, providing interactive functionality for discs of both formats. The player will also feature 1080p output at 60Hz, and HD DVD network connectivity.

It still comes at pretty hefty pricetag, however, with the suggested retail for the new player expected to run $999 when the player hits store shelves.

LG Electronics Launches Second-Generation Dual-Format High-Definition Disc Player

New Super Blu™ Player Offers New Features and Functionality, Continues
to Provide Consumers Choice Based on Content, not Format

DENVER, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics, the first company to
introduce a dual-format high-definition disc player, today unveiled its
second-generation LG Super Blu™ Player (model BH200). Sporting both
formats' logos, LG's new high-def player is capable of Blu-ray disc and HD
DVD
playback with advanced BD-Java and HDi interactivity, enabling
consumers to choose from the widest variety of high-def content regardless
of disc format.
On display for the first time at the Custom Electronic Design and
Installation Association (CEDIA) EXPO 2007 (booth #720), LG's Super Blu
Player will be available to U.S. consumers and custom installers in
mid-October at a suggested retail price of $999.
The BH200 further strengthens LG's position as an innovator. Seven
months ago, LG was the first to launch a dual-format high-def disc player,
the award-winning BH100. That technological breakthrough has been widely
recognized as a groundbreaking product with industry accolades including
CNN's Best of CES, CNET's CES 2007 Best in Show and Home Video categories
and Popular Mechanics' CES Editor's Choice Award.
"LG introduced the world's first high-definition dual-format player to
focus on consumer needs and to end the confusion caused by the current
format war," said Allan Jason, vice president of consumer electronics
marketing at LG Electronics USA, Inc. "The launch of BH200 reinforces our
leadership position and offers consumers and custom installers a
best-in-class next-generation high-definition media player."
Mark Horak, executive vice president for Warner Home Video, the only
major studio supporting both the HD DVD and Blu-ray disc formats, said,
"The availability of movie titles on competing high-def disc formats is a
challenge for both retailers and consumers. The introduction of the
second-generation LG Super Blu Player addresses this challenge by fully
enabling both high-def formats on one convenient player, encouraging the
adoption of next-generation disc technology and growing the market."
One Player, Latest Technology
The Super Blu Player offers increased HDTV entertainment choices,
because it can play 50 to 60 percent more high-def movie titles than either
single-format player. With full networked interactivity available from
selected HD DVDs, and the capability to handle networked "BD-Live"
interactivity in forthcoming Blu-ray discs, it is the latest available
technology that plays both disc formats.
Viewers can enjoy advanced options such as "Picture-in-Picture"
available from many Blu-ray discs as well as HDi web-connected
interactivity available from many HD DVDs. Access to these features enables
viewing of storyboards, production videos and director's commentary as the
movie is playing, as well as accessing up-to-date information. The Super
Blu Player also accepts additional entertainment content via a network
connection, making for an unmatched entertainment experience.
In addition to supporting the latest high-def disc technologies, the
Super Blu Player is the ideal match for movie enthusiasts and even music
enthusiasts as it supports audio CDs and the ability to up-scale standard
DVDs to 1080p resolution.
"With its improved features and functionality, the BH200 is perfect for
the custom installer in search of the next-generation player as it
eliminates the need for a second player and the additional cables it
requires," said Tim Alessi, director of consumer electronics marketing at
LG Electronics USA, Inc. "With full support for features available on both
Blu-ray discs and HD DVDs, it serves as the flagship of the LG home video
product line and complements the company's expanded line-up of 'Full HD'
1080p flat-panel HDTVs."
The Ultimate Movie Viewing Experience
The LG Super Blu Player, which can output up to 1080p video resolution
at 24-, 30- and 60-frames-per-second, supports various A/V formats,
including MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264 video, MPEG1/2 audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby
Digital+, DTS and DTS-HD audio. The unit also includes multiple
inputs/outputs such as HDMI 1.3 out, component/composite video outputs,
digital optical and analog audio outputs as well as a LAN Ethernet port for
network interactivity.
LG Super Blu Player customers will enjoy superior quality video output
with HDMI 1.3 Deep Color output to improve color tones and achieve finer
color gradations to deliver the smoothest and most brilliant video output
available. The player also features QDEO™ advanced video processing for
superior up-scaling accuracy up to 1080p, improved noise reduction and
consistent color precision.
The new Super Blu Player incorporates LG's SimpLink™ connectivity
solution, enabling easier control of other LG SimpLink compatible
equipment. The units are connected with an HDMI cable and use the HDMI-CEC
communication standard. This allows the user to control other components
on-screen or directly from each component. The BH200 also is equipped with
a USB Media Host for easy access to digital music and photo libraries.

For immediate release:

Integra Introduces its First HD DVD Player at 2007 CEDIA Expo

DENVER (9/5/07) -- Integra announced the introduction of the DHS-8.8, the company's first HD DVD player, at the 2007 CEDIA Expo here today. [U]This player has been designed specifically to meet the needs of the custom installer, and to fully exploit the potential of high-definition HD DVD content. It is among the first HD DVD players to enable transfer of high-bit-rate audio content via HDMI version 1.3a.

The DHS-8.8 is designed as an ideal source component for use with Integra's 2007 A/V receiver and preamplifier/processor range, which also include HDMI version 1.3a capabilities. In combination, these components are an ideal platform for high-definition 1080p video images, including Deep Color™ technology for improved color tones and finer color gradation. Additionally, HDMI 1.3a allows streaming of the new lossless surround sound formats, Dolby® TrueHD and DTS®-HD Master Audio, as well as two high-bit-rate "lossy" formats, Dolby® Digital Plus and DTS®-HD High Resolution Audio.

The Integra DHS-8.8 HD-DVD player also features the capability to support playback at different frame rates, including 24 frames per second, which is the native frame rate of the original sources for most HD content. This ensures that the user will be able to experience the playback of films recorded to HD DVD with the smoothest, most stable reproduction possible.

The DHS-8.8 features onboard HQV Reon VX video processing, currently recognized as the leading video processing technology in the home theater industry. This allows the player to provide precise video scaling to 720p, 1080i or 1080p output from both HD-DVD and standard definition DVD sources, delivering video at the native resolution of the video display device and stantially reducing video noise and distortion. For component video output, the player incorporates an Analog Devices 297 MHz/12-bit NSV video DAC that support 4x oversampling for outstanding reproduction with analog-based displays.

The DHS-8.8 features Wolfson and Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit audio DACs for conversion of audio sources for analog output via the 2-channel or 5.1-channel analog outputs. It also includes a bi-directional RS-232 port for integration with home automation and control systems. Finally, the player includes a rear-panel Ethernet port to make use of the web-based connectivity allowed for in the HD-DVD standard, including access to additional content from movie studios. This feature also provides installers and users with the ability to easily download any future firmware updates.

The DHS-8.8 will carry a suggested retail price of $1099, and will be available in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Integra designs and manufactures premium Home Theater receivers, processors, amplifiers, and DVD players that are specifically designed to meet the needs of custom audio/video systems installers. Systems integration and convergence technology protocols include RS-232, IR and on-board Ethernet for network connectivity and TCP/IP control. Integra has access to vast technical resources, and bears a proud heritage of 60 years of audio engineering excellence. Promotional Group Rolling Out 4th Quarter Marketing Campaign to Support More than 125 Movie Titles Representing $3 Billion in Box Office Revenue; HD DVD Announces Season-long Partnership with NBC Television Station Group for Sunday Night Football Broadcasts

DENVER, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the CEDIA EXPO 2007, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group showcased undeniable momentum for the high def format, announcing an aggressive fourth quarter marketing campaign to support a strong slate of more than 125 high definition movies, as well as expanded hardware offerings that take the consumer experience to new levels. Fueled by support from major Hollywood studios, including Warner Bros, Universal, and the recently exclusive Paramount and DreamWorks Animation; from leading hardware manufacturers including Toshiba and Onkyo; and from four of the top five PC Notebook manufacturers in the world; HD DVD continues to offer the best overall experience and the most affordable prices of all next generation formats.

In a clear show of marketing muscle leading into the holidays, Toshiba announced a season-long promotional campaign partnering with the NBC Television Station Group and its broadcasts of Sunday Night Football. This campaign includes 30 second HD DVD ads to air in key NBC television markets broadcasting Sunday Night Football, web sponsorships promoting the format, as well as special on-air HD DVD vignettes that will help educate consumers on how they can receive the ultimate high definition experience through their HDTV. The HD DVD vignettes will air in shows such as "Football Night in America" hosted by Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, Keith Olbermann, Tiki Barber and Jerome Bettis. This season-long campaign will communicate the many benefits of HD DVD to more than 72 million households through the holidays and into 2008.

"Today's announcements leave no doubt about the level of commitment driving this format -- HD DVD is the best choice for consumers and it's available today," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group.

http://www.avsforum....=901136&page=29
Overall I definitely think there's a case for more than 16 bits in audio at the point of delivery, but the last 4 or 5 bits of those 24-bit signals are always going to be noise....there's no point in encoding that in real life, whether or not storage space is constrained. And this does mean that compression algorithms such as DTS or DD+ running at say 1.5 Mbits/sec are for the most part going to be very hard to distinguish from lossless audio.

Food for thought :-)

Toshiba Refutes Sony's Claims of Blu-ray Stand-Alone Player Dominance

Well, that didn't take long. Toshiba this afternoon issued a tersely-worded response to claims made by Sony at a CEDIA press conference last night.

As we first reported earlier today, Sony VP Chris Fawcett was quoted as saying that stand-alone Blu-ray players had begun out-selling their HD DVD counterparts over the last 12 weeks.

Given the extent to which HD DVD backers had previously emphasized their own lead in this category, Sony's claims set off a minor firestorm across the web -- so much so, apparently, that Toshiba felt compelled to issue its own statement in response this afternoon.

The statement reads as follows:

In light of recent comments made regarding high definition stand-alone video players sales, Toshiba would like to reiterate its continued industry leading sales figures. Based on July data from NPD, Toshiba had a 55% market share year to date in high definition stand alone player sales followed by all Blu-ray companies at a combined 42%; the final 3 percent is held by dual format players.

While the competition may claim leadership based on one month of data, Toshiba has had continued sales leadership in every month since the original HD DVD players launched 17 months ago.

Toshiba is and continues to be a top seller at retailers such as Amazon, most recently reaching #1 on the site last week. As third generation players begin to come to market at the end of this month, Toshiba has full confidence that it will continue its momentum and lead in player sales.

HD DVD Enters Chinese Market With The Foundation of China High Definition DVD Industry Association

The HD DVD camp seems to gain momentum in China with the today's announcement of the CH-DVD (China High Definition DVD), a Chinese High-def DVD format based on the HD DVD standard.

In the todays' opening ceremony of CHDA, (China HDV DVD Association) in Jade Palace Hotel, Beijing, the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC) and the DVD Forum representatives announced the establishment of CH-DVD (China High Definition DVD), a new generation high definition DVD format developed in collaboration with research institutes and manufacturing enterprises.

The physical format of CH-DVD includes Chinese-owned intellectual property, and is based on HD DVD, the next generation high definition DVD approved by the DVD Forum. The realization of CH-DVD was supported by the Chinese government, and will pave the way for the localization of blue-laser, high-definition DVD in China.

CHDA is expected to play a leadership role in the promotion of CH-DVD, and will make a big push to launch CH-DVD player into the Chinese market in 2008.

The emergence of CH-DVD as a high definition format integrating Chinese-owned intellectual property demonstrates that a Chinese optical disc technology is already at the world-class level. In the near future, all related industries in China are expected to make the transition from standard definition DVD to high definition DVD.

CH-DVD adopts advanced copy protection technology that prevents the spread of pirated copy, according to the CHDA. Many content holders have confirmed their support for CH-DVD and will launch movie titles in the CH-DVD format,"

In the next year, China will start broadcasts of high definition TV programs. = Net Insight

My earlier forecast of a Chinese version of the HD DVD standard has been proven, AVS CH-DVD is not only supported video standards, CH-DVD Toshiba and still support the High AVC and MPEG-2 encoding, producers can choose, for this demonstration CH-DVD - set to coincide coding are produced. In addition, the CH-DVD audio standard in the future will be added to China's own DRA Audio standard, but in the basic platform, the CH-DVD and HD DVD the same, CH-DVD player can very easily change the HD DVD player.

New Chinese Involvement Could Trigger HD DVD Price Plunge

If ever there were a time for either Blu-ray or HD DVD manufacturers to play a trump card, now may be the time, and this could be the one: A consortium of Chinese university engineers and government officials, in cooperation with a Chinese video standards group that includes globally recognized manufacturers, plus the DVD Forum, have come to an agreement on a standard specification for a blue-laser disc mechanism and format specifically for the Chinese market.

The new group will be called the China High Definition DVD Industry Association, or just CHDA, and this is not the last you will hear of it.

The agreement announced early this morning US time is critical, because up until now, China has been reluctant to participate in the high-definition video disc industry unless it had an opportunity to bring its own video encoding standard to bear: AVS, a codec which incorporates elements of MPEG-2, but is otherwise different from -- and some argue, better than -- other MPEG encoding standards and VC-1 in important respects.

Now, the DVD Forum's involvement has evidently made it possible for Chinese manufacturers to produce components that play blue-laser, high-def discs using the Chinese national standard, though which are fundamentally compatible with HD DVD with only minor adjustments.

The upshot here is this: The same country that has literally upset the LCD TV industry on its ear in just the last year alone, now has the specifications it needs to do the same with high-def video discs. While it makes so-called CH-DVD players for the home market (the name is subject to change, the new consortium says), China can also produce HD DVD players for the rest of the world, at prices that can best be described as Chinese.

All of a sudden, the incentive for studios such as Warner Bros. to call a halt to exploiting new disc technologies its own engineers had patented, and for Paramount to jump ship and abort its Blu-ray support, may be becoming clear.

What a difference a macroblock makes

Since 2004, China has taken a public stand against becoming too involved in what it described as "Western-influenced technologies" in the development of high-def technology. The country opted instead to create its own national standard - government-owned intellectual property for video encoding - and go its own way. But it needed a clear technological distinction between its own way of encoding video and the rest of the world's.

It found one, most likely, in the person of one Professor Ishfaq Ahmad. Educated at Syracuse, for nine years Ahmad taught at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's Department of Computer Science, before moving back to the US to teach at the University of Texas at Arlington. But while in Hong Kong in 2001, he and two colleagues produced a thesis on the subject of reducing the computing overhead necessary for encoding H.263 video. One of the systems he used in the test was a Sun UltraSPARC-1 workstation; the other was a 233 MHz Intel Pentium II-based PC.

The Hong Kong team's goal was to demonstrate algorithmic optimization techniques that could be applied to relatively low-power systems such as these, that could demonstrably improve encoding times by a factor of between 3 and 6. Part of encoding optimization involves being able to divide frames into few enough components so that algorithms can still correctly detect motion - and thus, the need to change - without overtaxing the processor.

Rather than divide pictures down to the most granular level - pixels - video encoding bunches pixels together into what are called macroblocks - cubes, in a way, made up of squares of luminance and difference data bunched together. Typically with MPEG, macroblocks using 4 x 4 pixel squares are used. But for Prof. Ahmad's team's experiment, they tried a technique that, based on others' theories, should not have worked.

From the Hong Kong team's 2001 paper: "A picture is divided into macroblocks, since such division results in more efficient coding. Each macroblock consists of four luminance blocks and two spatially aligned color difference blocks. Each of these blocks [is] of size 8 x 8 pixels. One or more macroblock rows are combined into a group of blocks (GOB) to enable quick resynchronization after transmission errors."

It's the 8 x 8 macroblock that was key to simplifying the algorithm and accelerating the encoding sequence.

Three years later, the Chinese government announced it would be developing its own video encoding/decoding standard, to be called Advanced Audio Video Encoding Standard in Information Technology, or just AVS. It was described thus:

"China initiated the new standard to reduce its reliance on technologies that use international standards heavily influenced by companies in Western countries. The standard will be used in the development of video players, stereos, interactive educational programs, surveillance systems and other audio and video products developed for the Chinese market."

Leading the development of this standard would be Prof. Ahmad, who by that time had joined the University of Texas at Arlington. There, he and the university would receive a $200,000 grant from Sun Microsystems, which was evidently impressed by the use of the UltraSPARC-1 in the Hong Kong team's tests.

China's strategy as a high-definition IP licensor

In April 2005, the first AVS specification was ready. Ten months later - just two years after Sun's grant to Prof. Ahmad at UTA - AVS was declared the national encoding standard of China. The AVS Standard Workgroup was formed to serve as the standard's caretaker. Its inaugural message stated quite boldly China's intent not only to distinguish its intellectual property from that of the rest of the world, but to compete head-on with it on a technological level.

Here is a portion of that statement as it appeared, translated (as best the group evidently could) into English, although the tone of the statement is not lost at all: "The outmoded technology and extortionate price of MPEG-2 will result in it withdraws from the historical arena. MPEG-4 appears the new patent permitting policy of MPEG-4 appears too harshly which makes it unable to be accepted, thereby besieged by the multitudinous business operators. As a result MPEG-4 falls into a deadlock and future is difficult to predict. AVS is China independent standard which based on homeland innovative technology and partial public technology. AVS coding efficiency is more than 2-3 time of MPEG-2, and similar with AVC. Moreover the AVS technical plan is succinct; chip is less complex."

As we now know all too well, the American, European, and Japanese implementations of DVD and high-def DVD are chock full of intellectual property. Video encoding technology, audio technology, security, the interactive layer, the silkscreened label - all of these things are compensated for with royalty payments. And for each technology, there are dozens if not hundreds of businesses and organizations - some of them who have studios, others who have garages - that have specifically measured stakes in its distribution and dissemination.

But the AVS Workgroup offers an intriguing alternative: a single patent license that covers the entire gamut of encoding, decoding, security, and format mechanisms necessary to produce a high-definition video disc. Royalties for that license are payable not to a collection of rights agencies, but to a single authorized licensor and technology source: China.

So why is the DVD Forum involved with this? The DVD Forum represents HD DVD as a standard (while the HD DVD Promotions Group represents its public face). It has an interest in seeing more HD DVD players manufactured at lower prices to the consumer.

In September 2005, as first reported by CDRInfo, the DVD Forum began talks with China's Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center about the possibility of that country's manufacturers being able to build optical drive components that are essentially HD DVD players, but not really.

Meaning, they would be just close enough to being HD DVD players that, if manufacturers wanted to go ahead and call them so, they could - by just paying the license fee. Or, as Chinese officials put it, they could opt to save as much as $1 billion per year collectively and not pay the license fee, if manufacturers were happy producing goods for consumption in China only.

It would save China the expense of developing its own format, which is something it did consider in the form of something called Enhanced Versatile Disc.

The result of that collaboration is the CH-DVD format, announced this morning. The HD DVD Promotions Group trumpeted the news in a message to BetaNews this afternoon. "This is great for the HD DVD camp," the spokesperson said, "since product developers do not have to start from scratch and can achieve shorter development times. The more drives that are made, the cheaper it is to make HD DVD players across the board."

The new Chinese consortium did its own trumpeting, though with a decidedly more formal tone: "The emergence of CH-DVD as a high definition format integrating Chinese-owned intellectual property clearly demonstrates that a Chinese optical disc technology is already at the world-class level. In the near future, all related industries in China are expected to make the transition from standard definition DVD to high definition DVD."

Consider that an order.

But before you get the idea that only China has an interest in CH-DVD, realize that the AVS Workgroup has a global membership list. Though many of the names on that list include Chinese universities and research labs, there are some other very interesting and notable members: the China branch of ATI, IBM, Intel, LG, Matsushita, NEC, Nokia, Philips, STMicroelectronics, TI, Tektronix, and of all the amazing ironies of this story... Sony.

While these companies may not have had a direct hand in creating AVS -- at least, not as direct as Prof. Ahmad's own -- they all have an interest in its success, perhaps just in China, perhaps elsewhere. Think of it as a hedge fund.

The HD DVD spokesperson told BetaNews this afternoon that CHDA plans to make CH-DVD players available in time for the Beijing Olympics next summer. That means the first working models could be on display at CES 2008 in January. Paramount's defection from Blu-ray the other day isn't the only mountain that's moving.
