Hm det är inte helt kul det här med CI+
What’s new with CI+?
What are
the benefits and drawbacks for end
users?
Let’s begin with a positive note: CI+
is fully based on the CI standard, which
means it does not establish a new standard
but rather adds features to an existing
one. Those extra features, on the
other hand, include numerous restrictions
for users.
The whole sphere of encryption was
left untouched, but with CI+ so-called
usage rule information (URI) can be
added to the DVB-S, DVB-C or DVB-T datastream.
CI+ receivers are able (more
precisely: must be able) to recognise
URI and follow its rules accordingly. The
following restrictions can be imposed
with CI+:
• digital recording of received
content can be totally restricted
• digital recording of received
content can be partially restricted (restrictions
for certain events, channels,
etc.)
• rewinding and fast forwarding
of recorded content can by restricted
during playback
• time-shift viewing can be restricted
• the Macrovision copy protection
signal can be activated at the euroscart
output of the receiver
• recorded content can be paired
to a receiver so that it can only be
played back on that particular device
• content providers are able to
put receivers out of operation after unauthorised
changes to the operating
system have been made be a user
• CI+ invariably decrypts only
one event at a time – it is not possible
to decrypt two events simultaneously
• HD content can only be put out
to HDCP compatible devices
as well as the following most significant
modifications:
• the datastream as received
from the provider is decrypted by the
CI+ module, but encrypted again immediately
so that the data transmitted
through a USB, Firewire or any other
data interface is encrypted and therefore
cannot be saved on DVD, for example.
