HD DVD Rallies Consumer Audience in 2007 Driving Nearly One Million Dedicated Player Sales in North America

HD DVD software sales increase during key holiday season, consistent with
higher player ownership

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show
in Las Vegas, the companies of the HD DVD Promotional Group recapped a
breakthrough year for the high definition format, reaching nearly one
million dedicated HD DVD players sold in North America and delivering on
the promise of affordability, quality and a consistent experience on every
machine. With a leading install base of dedicated players, there are now
more than 400 titles available in the US and more than 1,000 titles
available worldwide. During the key five week holiday selling period, HD
DVD software sales grew at nearly twice the rate of Blu-ray, which was
consistent with increased player growth.

"Our focus from day one has been to deliver the highest quality
hardware and the best, most immersive home entertainment experiences for
consumers at affordable prices," said Jodi Sally, vice president of
marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "With nearly one million dedicated
players in the market in North America, and a leading position in the PC
market worldwide, we're seeing software growth follow suit."

As the industry looks for a format that can break into the mainstream
consumer market, HD DVD continues to be the affordable, high quality
leader, setting the bar for a positive consumer experience. Through a
combination of quality and price, HD DVD meets the essential requirements
for any format to successfully reach the mass market.

Strong Hardware and Title Growth

In 2007, HD DVD reached a broader group of consumers than ever before,
showing strong movie title sales and high attach rates stemming from the
major influx of dedicated HD DVD players on the market. Based on Nielsen
data, when comparing first week consumer sales, "The Bourne Ultimatum" on
HD DVD outsold "Spiderman 3" on Blu-ray. Among all high definition formats,
HD DVD still maintains the highest attach rates -- more than twice the rate
of Blu-ray.

"The HD DVD camp has always stuck to a simple set of principles," said
Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for
Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD
Promotional Group. "Give consumers who buy into HD DVD what they paid for.
In fact, give them more than they expected. Show them that quality and
value go hand in hand with HD DVD. Show them what advanced interactivity
really means and how it can enrich your favorite movies that you watch over
and over."

To this point, Toshiba's HD DVD players received several Editor's
Choice and Product of the Year awards from respected media outlets,
including Sound & Vision, Electronic House, E-Gear, and Ultimate AV.

On the PC front, the HD DVD Promotional Group announced that by the end
of 2007, HD DVD-enabled PCs represented more than 80% of all high
definition-capable PCs. The HD DVD companies expect notebook PCs in
particular to be the variable that helps keep quality high, but prices low,
by driving down manufacturing costs for drives across all HD DVD players.

Global Studio Support

A critical milestone for HD DVD in helping to drive strong sales across
the board was the strong support from Hollywood studios and global content
providers. In 2007, HD DVD went from being supported by 41 studios and
distributors worldwide to 65.

Groundbreaking Interactive Features

Using Microsoft's HDi technology, HD DVD led the way in 2007 with
never-before-seen interactive experiences that have changed how consumers
interact with their favorite movies. HD DVD was the first to offer true
picture in picture director's commentary in 2007 with Warner's "300". This
feature was not included in the Blu-ray version, and showcases a key HD DVD
feature that caters directly to the fan community. Universal's "Heroes" and
Paramount's "Transformers" also included picture in picture features than
enhance the experience for fans.

HD DVD was also the first to deliver web-connected content, offering
bonus material on titles such as "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Heroes: Season
1," and "Transformers" -- all offering downloadable content that's
continually updated so fans of the movie can return for new features. The
interactive elements are all designed to promote an enhanced "second look"
environment and to rally the fan communities around key titles. In
addition, Universal launched U-Shop, an extension of the U-Control feature,
letting you buy items related to a movie directly through the guaranteed
internet connection on every HD DVD player. Universal's "Evan Almighty" was
the first title to showcase this, illustrating what can be done when every
player on the market can access these features.

As the official successor to DVD, HD DVD has added to the heritage of
the most successful consumer electronics format ever, bringing the highest
quality HD experiences to consumers at the most affordable prices. The HD
DVD Booth at CES 2008 is located in South Hall 1 (booth #21266).

Verbatim Adds World's First 2x-Speed HD DVD Recordable Media to Industry's Broadest HD DVD Media Product Line

Sunday January 6, 10:00 pm ET
Provides One-stop Shopping for Highest Speeds, Highest Capacities, Highest Quality

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Verbatim® Americas, LLC announced today that it will begin shipping the world’s first 2x-speed HD DVD-R (recordable) and HD DVD-RW (rewriteable) discs this quarter. By adding the new HD DVD recordable media to its current offerings, Verbatim now offers the industry’s broadest range of premium-quality HD DVD media products. The complete HD DVD media product line, including Verbatim’s 2x HD DVD R/RW media and its 1x HD DVD-R DL media will be showcased at Verbatim’s CES Booth #S4-36249 in the South Hall this week.

Verbatim 2x-speed HD DVD-R/RW Media -- At 2x-speed Verbatim’s new recordable and rewriteable HD DVDs slash the time required to fill a 15GB HD DVD disc to about 30 minutes, compared to about 1 hour at 1x speed. HD DVD media supports the Advanced Access Content System copy-protection technology.

To achieve the higher performance required for 2x write speeds, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), Verbatim’s parent company, leveraged its proven dye technology to develop a new highly sensitive recording layer. The recording characteristics of Verbatim HD DVD-R discs are further enhanced by the disc’s physical attributes. Features such as a uniform groove shape, consistent substrate thickness and flatness of the disc have been proven to optimize the performance and longevity of Verbatim media. These characteristics are achieved using a new mastering process, ultra-precise molding technology and advanced bonding techniques developed by MKM. To achieve the narrow track pitch of the HD DVD format, MKM also developed a stamper with a precise groove shape.

Verbatim’s single-sided, dual layer HD DVD-R Media has been available in Japan since July of 2006 and began shipping to its North American customers when compatible hardware became available in Q1 2007. Verbatim's HD DVD DL media supports the Advanced Access Content System copy-protection technology.

To achieve the best balance of reflectivity, transmission and absorption for both recording layers, MKM developed a new highly sensitive recording dye. The high recording sensitivity plus the wider power margin of the new recording layer ensure a low error rate, regardless of drive power fluctuations or smudges on the disc surface. Highly resistant to sunlight and heat, the media provides ultra-stable recording characteristics for a lifetime of high performance -- even after long periods of storage -- for both recorded and unrecorded media.

Verbatim/MKM is a general member of the HD DVD Promotion Group and a charter member of the DVD Forum.

Toshiba Updates Industry’s Most Affordable Portfolio of High-Definition Laptops

Company’s HD DVD Lineup Features Starting Price of $899; New Qosmio World’s First Notebook with HD DVD-R/RW Drive

LAS VEGAS (Business Wire EON) January 6, 2008 -- Toshiba’s Digital Product Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced it lowered the starting price on its HD DVD1 notebook line to $8992, starting with the Satellite A205 notebook. In addition to the new pricing structure, Toshiba incorporated the world’s first notebook HD DVD-R/RW optical drive into the Qosmio G45, and collectively boosted the greater overall power and functionality of its full lineup of HD DVD enabled notebook computers.

With an $899 starting price more users now have access to the industry’s most complete portfolio of leading high-definition notebook computers. Also, with the addition of an HD DVD rewritable drive Qosmio users are empowered with the ability to burn, erase and re-burn content to HD DVD-RW discs. The Toshiba HD DVD notebook portfolio consists of four models featuring high-definition widescreen displays with resolutions up to 1080p and screen sizes ranging from 15.4- to 17-inches. The portfolio includes the Satellite® A205, Satellite P205, Satellite X205 and Qosmio® G45 models.

For a limited time, with the purchase of an HD DVD enabled Toshiba notebook, consumers qualify to receive five HD DVD movie titles for free, from a selection of 15 popular titles, via a mail-in offer. Eligible models and complete offer details are available at www.toshibadirect.com/hddvdpc, and the promotion is valid until February 28, 2008.

The convergence of high-definition with the widespread appeal of the DVD format has lead to the creation of the new HD DVD format. The next-generation technology of HD DVD provides an unsurpassed experience in terms of resolution and interactivity. While today’s DVD format has a maximum playback resolution of 480p, HD DVDs leap forward with an image resolution that is up to six times sharper. The result is a visual experience with brighter colors, enhanced details and greater overall image sharpness.

Designed to be a truly interactive medium, HD DVD delivers an unprecedented experience that will change how people watch and enjoy their movies. Available to users are features, such as picture-in-picture director’s commentary and instant scene book-marking, for instant access to a user’s favorite scenes on-the-fly. Unlike today’s DVD viewing experience, many HD DVD interactive features can be enjoyed while the film is being viewed. Additionally, an HD DVD enabled notebook is compatible with all of today’s standard-definition DVD titles, ensuring that a user’s collection of DVD movies is not left obsolete.

For a more expansive viewing experience, select Toshiba HD DVD enabled notebooks include an HDMI port and can be connected to an HDTV to deliver a pure high-definition image that will equal the resolution capability of the HDTV, up to 1080p.

The Qosmio G45, Satellite X205, Satellite P205 and Satellite A205 featuring HD DVD drives will be available at www.toshibadirect.com and at a variety of major consumer electronics and computer stores nationwide.

1. HD DVD Technology. Because HD DVD is a new format that makes use of new technologies, certain disc, digital connection and other compatibility and/or performance issues are possible. Depending on HD DVD content, you may experience “frame dropping” or lower performance. See HD DVD Technology Legal Footnote at www.info.toshiba.com.

2. Reseller prices may vary. ESUP means “Estimated Single Unit Price.”

CES 2008 - Toshiba Third-Generation Players Delivers On The Promise Of The HD DVD Format

Reproduced here is Toshiba's press release at CES 2008 specifically for its HD DVD products...

State-of-the-Art Performance, Successful Promotions and Affordable Pricing Result in Strong Consumer Acceptance of Third Generation Players

CES, LAS VEGAS – JANUARY 6, 2008 – Demonstrating strong consumer acceptance for the HD DVD format, Toshiba America Consumer Products L.L.C. ("Toshiba") today announced that the rollout of its third generation HD DVD players has been the most successful to date. With their unrivaled performance including real-world Web-enabled networking capabilities, consumers have chosen Toshiba's third generation HD DVD players for their ultimate high def entertainment experience, resulting in the strongest quarter of unit sales to date and solidifying Toshiba's market share leadership position.

"We are pleased with the consumer acceptance of our HD DVD players in the market," said Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group." The combination of HD DVD's state of the art audio/video performance and unrivaled interactive capabilities along with exciting consumer promotions and affordable pricing in 2007 marked significant accomplishments for the HD DVD format.

An HD DVD World

As it has become established in the market, HD DVD has delivered on the promise of next generation entertainment in the home, which has led to the expansion of high definition in all areas of the consumer experience.

"Because HD DVD is a standardized format and meets the spec guidelines mandated and approved by the DVD Forum, it provides a consistent platform for all applications of next generation high definition video such as mobile entertainment and makes it possible to enjoy HD DVD in a multitude of lifestyle settings," said Yoshi Uchiyama, Group Vice President America Digital A/V Group. "Whether as a standalone player for a home theater as a companion drive to the Xbox 360™ gaming machine or as an HD DVD-ROM drive for computers, HD DVD will be in many facets of consumers' lives. As part of our vision for transitioning movie lovers to high definition, our goal is to extend HD DVD beyond the traditional home entertainment experience."

Fulfilling the promise of HD DVD

Toshiba also announced its commitment to enhancing the consumer's HD DVD player purchase with the introduction of the "HD DVD Concierge," a new 800 number offering dedicated assistance to purchasers of HD DVD players. Consumers can now call 1-888-MY HDDVD (1-888-694-3383) for answers to general questions about HD DVD, for operational assistance or for assistance with various marketing initiatives. Trained service agents will provide the latest information on HD DVD enabling consumers to get the most from their purchase.

Toshiba delivers a richer interactive experience-now

With interactivity built into every HD DVD player as a mandatory spec, and with the reality of Web-enabled network capabilities, Toshiba delivers on the promise of a totally new experience. HD DVD allows studios to flex their creative muscle in ways never before offered or not currently available on any other format. 2007 saw the introduction of online polling, ringtones and online shopping to name a few, all from the HD DVD player itself and from the comfort of one's own home.

The latest of these new experiences is online streaming. Now when consumers connect their HD DVD player to the Internet via the standard Ethernet port on every player, they can stream new content or trailers, as available, directly from a movie studio's server. "It's exciting to see the studios bring HD DVD to life through new interactive features and Web-enabled network capabilities," said Uchiyama. "By consistently delivering unique entertainment experiences, we're changing the world of movie watching and giving meaning to the HD DVD experience." Consumers have spoken, and data from Universal Home Video and Paramount and DreamWorks Animation SKG shows that an average of 30 percent of HD DVD owners have accessed Web-enabled network features and continue to do so regularly.

About Toshiba HD DVD Players and Third Generation Line

HD DVD was designed from the outset to be the evolution of the DVD format; every Toshiba HD DVD player is designed to play back DVDs and CDs. Toshiba's HD DVD players will not only play DVD but will instantly make a movie lover's existing DVD library look even better than it ever did with upconversion via the HDMI™ output. With the HD DVD format, consumers can experience true high def 1080p resolution for extraordinary detail that matches the latest state of the art 1080p HDTVs. Select Toshiba HD DVD players display images at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate used by directors when using film to create motion pictures, for a smoother, more film like, viewing experience.

Toshiba's third generation family starts with the entry level HD-A3 player featuring 1080i output capability. The other two new models, Toshiba's HD-A30 and HD-A35, output 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080p), the highest HD signal currently available. Both models are capable of outputting signals at 1080p/24 frames per second so consumers can enjoy movies in their native frame rate. The HD-A30 and HD-A35 models also feature "REGZA® Link" (HDMI™-CEC), allowing two-way control between the HD DVD player and a TV through an HDMI connection.

All Toshiba HD DVD players also feature twin video processors and advanced audio to deliver an immersive home theater experience with features such as picture-in-picture video and audio commentary. Thanks to the Ethernet port and flash memory built into every Toshiba HD DVD player, movie lovers also can enjoy the benefits of Web-enabled network connectivity. Plus, Toshiba's third generation players have a new slim design cabinet that is approximately ¼-inch slimmer than second generation models.

HD DVD's Commitment to Green

Toshiba is committed to not only making its products consumer friendly, but friendly to the environment as well. Its products, including the third generation HD DVD players, meet Toshiba's voluntary environmental standards and ongoing efforts to bring eco-conscious products to market and comply with the company's strict environmental policies. Environmental management is promoted both from the standpoint of improving products themselves and renewing manufacturing processes, which not only calls for the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in products, but also to avoid using such substances in any manufacturing process.

For example, Toshiba HD DVD players are compliant with the EU RoHS Directive, a European Union environmental directive that restricts the use of six hazardous substances, including lead, mercury and cadmium. Also, for energy conservation, all third generation players meet the Energy Star standard. Toshiba will place the Toshiba Group Earth Protection mark on its third generation players' catalogs and manuals. The Toshiba Environmental Standard for granting the Toshiba Group Earth Protection mark is on Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C.'s official website.

Maxell Introduces New Blu-Ray/HD DVD Lens Cleaner

Maxell introduced a lens cleaning solution ideal for the active Blu-Ray & HD DVD users as well as PS3 and X-box 360 gamers.

Designed specifically for Blu-Ray/HD DVD players, the Blu-Ray/HD DVD Lens Cleaner features a patented Wind Funnel Cleaning System held exclusively by Maxell that enables the disc cleaner to remove dust and dirt from the sensitive systems without using chemicals and brushes.

The cleaning process is simple. While located in the player, the disc rotates and generates an air stream in a spiral motion and that air stream then changes to air shower on the lens when it passes through the holes. The power of the air shower removes dust particles on the lens without damaging the surface of the product.

Maxell's new Blu-Ray/HD DVD Lens Cleaner will be available in March 2008 for a suggested retail price of $24.99.

HD-DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.
Toshiba delivered on the promise of affordability, quality and a consistent experience on every machine.
More than 400 HD-DVD titles available in the US and more than 1,000 titles available worldwide.
During the key five week holiday selling period, HD-DVD software sales grew at nearly twice the rate of Blu-ray.
Based on Nielsen data, when comparing first week consumer sales, "The Bourne Ultimatum" on HD-DVD outsold "Spiderman 3" on Blu-ray.
Toshiba's HD-DVD players received several Editor's Choice and Product of the Year awards from respected media outlets, including Sound & Vision, Electronic House, E-Gear, and Ultimate AV.
HD-DVD Promotional Group announced that by the end of 2007, HD-DVD-enabled PCs represented more than 80% of all high definition-capable PCs.
In 2007, HD-DVD went from being supported by 41 studios and distributors worldwide to 65.
HD-DVD was the first to offer true picture in picture director's commentary in 2007 with Warner's "300". This feature was not included in the Blu-ray version, and in fact was not supported by Blu-Ray until recently.
HD-DVD was also the first to deliver web-connected content, offering bonus material on titles such as "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Heroes: Season 1," and "Transformers".
HD-DVD is the next generation, post-DVD standard for high capacity, high definition optical discs, approved by the DVD Forum.
HD-DVD is more consumer friendly, featuring less DRM and no restrictive region coding.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "Toshiba was still working hard last week to court Warner and News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox to use HD DVD exclusively. Warner was considering it, people familiar with the matter say, but when it realized Fox wouldn't leave Blu-ray, decided to go with Blu-ray exclusively as well, to bring an end to the format war." So ultimately the consumers never decided. Warner did not care about the advantages of HD-DVD over Blu-Ray, they didn't care that consumers were obviously choosing HD-DVD, and instead Warner made their decision primarily based on existing studio support with the intention of ending the format war quickly.

Ultimately, it didn't come down to Blue vs. Red, it came down to the industry vs. the consumer. And the industry won.

Den brittiska supporten svarade följande: "Good Morning Lucas,

Thank you for your email to Toshiba.

The Warner Brothers announcement did come as a surprise to us and we do not have any further information at this time.

Kind Regards

Katie Hall
Toshiba Customer Support Representative"

Paramount still behind HD DVD

According to the Wall Street Journal, a Paramount spokeswoman said yesterday that the company plans to continue support of the HD DVD format.

According to various rumors, Paramount made an 18-month deal with HD DVD when they decided to go HD DVD exclusive back in August 2007. This means that they will not be able to release on Blu-ray before February/March 2009.

DVDn är fortfarande the big boy :)

Despite the apparent optimism from studios and the consumer electronics industry, U.S. retailers aren't satisified with the growth of either Blu-ray or HD DVD in 2007. While sales were up from the previous year, title sales accounted for only 3.5% of packaged media sold last year.

According to Todd Zaganiacz, president of the National Entertainment Buying Group, sales still aren't high enough to sell retailers on either format. “I’ve talked to a handful of retailers who still aren’t doing HD. I don’t think anybody will ditch it, but there wasn’t enough of a bump to get anyone off the fence, or devote more space to either format.”

Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey indicated that neither format has dominated rentals either. This would seem to validate those who question whether PS3 sales, which have grown at a significantly higher rate than either HD DVD players or non-PS3 Blu-ray players, should be counted in standalone player comparisons.

One thing retailers are convinced of right now is that there's more money to be made in standard definition DVDs. “DVD still gets top billing,” Zaganiacz said. “A lot of the retailers are doing the same as the consumers, and waiting.”

Paramount/Dreamworks: Vi stöder fortfarande HD DVD

We have received word from Paramount/DreamWorks that although they continue to support HD DVD, they will not be making any new high-def title announcements at CES 2008.

Ge mig gudfadern trilogin mm
