Bourne Ultimatum.

Hoping to bridge the gap for HD DVD-supporting early adopters, LG said Tuesday that it would continue to support HD DVD in the wake of Toshiba's announcement.
In a statement first published by Pocket-lint.uk, LG acknowledged that Blu-ray will now be the leading high-def format, but "that does not rule out HDDVD immediately as there are still a number of consumers who have chosen HDDVD and begun to build a HDDVD collection."
The manufacturer went on to say that "at this present moment in time, it is necessary to provide a player which supports both formats and therefore create simplicity and convenience for the existing HDDVD consumer."
LG was the first electronics manufaturer to offer a dual-format high-def player, first issuing its BH100 back in January of 2007 (the company has since updated that earlier model with the BH200). Late last year, Samsung had entered the dual-format player market with its BD-UP5000, and plans for a second player in the coming months. A Samsung official was quoted Sunday as saying the company would likely focus on Blu-ray moving forward.

Though it's widely believed that Paramount will ultimately follow Warner and Universal to Blu-ray, the studio's silence today in the wake of Toshiba's announcement has tongues wagging.
Of course, Paramount is no stranger to the Blu-ray camp, having famously abandoned the format last August to go HD DVD exclusive. Although the studio was reported to have received $150 million in incentives to make the move, at the time studio execs praised HD DVD as the more stable of the two next-gen platforms.
Whether or not those public statements and/or any fees received by Paramount to make the switch are complicating negotiations with the BDA this time around is unknown, but as the only major HD DVD-supporting studio yet to make its future high-def plans known, speculation among industry observers reached a fever pitch Tuesday afternoon.
For its own part, Paramount declined comment on Toshiba's announcement today; instead, the studio issued release details for two HD DVD titles, 'There Will Be Blood' and 'Sweeney Todd.'
Stay tuned...

Play.com panicking that it will be left with shelves full of HD DVD products, following today's announcement that Toshiba is pulling the plug on the format, has slashed the prices to a bare minimum.
The entry-level player, the HD-EP30 is now selling for just £80, a saving of £170 while customers at Amazon.co.uk will be able to get it from £77.99.
Those looking to spend even more money on a dead horse will be able to get the HD-EP35 for £159.99 - a saving of £190.
Retailers aren't the only ones trying to off load stock, early adopters who've bought into the format clearly want out.

Här är fö lite nya siffror på sålda HD DVD enheter "worldwide"... 1.3 miljoner var ju inte så dåligt ändå...?
"At the press conference, Atsutoshi Nishida also revealed total HD-DVD hardware sales worldwide, facts previously made opaque in officially announcements. A grand total of 1.3-million HD-DVD players sold worldwide breaks down to 300k Xbox 360 drives, 300k PC drives, 600k dedicated US players, 100k dedicated Euro players, and 30,000 dedicated Japanese players. Against the more than 10-million Blu-ray players in circulation, HD-DVD was indeed fighting an uphill battle in the format war. Nishida also commented that Toshiba has "no plan at all this moment" to begin supporting Blu-ray."

Onkyo’s position on HD-DVD – clarification
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008-02-08
In 2007 Onkyo decided to support its customers by launching a HD DVD player that would aesthetically fit in with the rest of their Onkyo equipment and that was technically based on one of the best HD players available at that time. The DV-HD805 was always planned as a limited run product from the outset and most of the shipped products have been sold out by early December in a matter of days because we underestimated the potential of HD-DVD players in the European market.
As this actually happened last year the recent, well-publicised statements by Hollywood studios at CES could not and did not have any influence on this particular product's life cycle and production run, contrary to current rumours as seen on some websites.
Our No1 priority is satisfying our loyal and ever-growing customer base. Whenever there is a clear demand for the new formats, Onkyo will always do its best to fulfil that need by delivering leading-edge hardware featuring class-leading audio and video capabilities and our now legendary standards of build quality.

With Universal having thrown its weight behind Blu-ray earlier this week, the studio says the fate of its remaining HD DVD releases is currently TBD.
Though the studio has yet to make any formal announcements, when asked to confirm recent retail reports that it was planning a March 18 HD DVD debut for the Oscar nominee 'Atonement,' a Universal rep told us that the studio's entire HD DVD slate is currently in flux -- leaving open the possibility that it may not issue any more titles in the format.

As for which titles might be affected by such a move, prior to Tuesday's announcement, Universal had only confirmed two upcoming HD DVD releases: the Chevy Chase comedy 'Fletch' (due March 11), and the Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts hstarrer, 'Charlie Wilson's War' (which had been planned for sometime in the April-May timeframe).
At press time, the majority of titles on the HD DVD release schedule were split between Warner and Paramount/DreamWorks. As we've previously reported, Warner recently reiterated their intention to continue supporting the format until the end of May, while Paramount has yet to set a timetable for its own move to Blu-ray (just this week, the studio issued fresh details for two upcoming HD DVD releases, 'Sweeney Todd' and 'There Will Be Blood.')

"It might mean they'll lose the opportunity to sell 'Bee Movie' on Blu-ray, although the market for Blu-ray is still pretty small and the offset is that they'd get money from Toshiba, which may in fact be more," Crockett said. "But I'm sure they'll like to have this settled by Christmas."
Man kan ju undra hur detta kommer påverka titlar som Transformers etc ??!

That's according to DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, who acknowledged in an interview with Reuters Tuesday that his company was "well-compensated" for its HD DVD exclusivity, and that it was awaiting word from Toshiba on how to proceed.
"It really is in their court at this point to really declare what the next step will be," explained Katzenberg. "We're poised either way to jump into the marketplace when the conditions are right to do so."
Though DreamWorks Animation is an independently owned company, Paramount Pictures (corporate parent of sister studio DreamWorks SKG) announced its own intention to return to Blu-ray last Thursday. At press time it wasn't clear how (or if) the HD DVD exclusivity terms for the two companies were different.
'Bee Movie' is the only upcoming DreamWorks Animation title currently on the HD DVD schedule. Katzenberg told Reuters he was waiting to hear back from Toshiba on how to proceed with that title.

Paramount Cancels Majority of HD DVD Slate (UPDATED)
Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 07:02 PM ET
UPDATE 6:45pm: We've received word from Paramount that DreamWorks Animation will also follow its studio parent and end HD DVD support. DreamWorks Animation sole remaining HD DVD release, 'Bee Movie' (originally scheduled for March 11) has been cancelled. We've updated our database accordingly.
Ending weeks of speculation, Paramount says 'Into the Wild' and 'Things We Lost in the Fire' will be its last two HD DVD releases.
Although the studio has yet to issue a formal statement, when asked to confirm retail reports that it had canceled the majority of its upcoming HD DVD slate, a Paramount rep told us that following the next week's HD DVD releases of 'Into the Wild' and 'Things We Lost in the Fire,' the studio will no longer issue any further titles on the format.
According to a just-published article in The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is expected to release its first new Blu-ray titles this summer.
Paramount (and its subsidiary DreamWorks) had nearly a half-dozen HD DVD titles scheduled for release through early Spring. Here is a complete list of the studio's previously-announced titles that have now been cancelled:
March 25: 'The Jack Ryan Collection,' 'The Kite Runner'
April 1: 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'
April 15: 'There Will Be Blood '
Although Paramount stressed to us that their confirmation today did not cover titles released by the independently-owned DreamWorks Animation, Video Business is reporting that the studio's only currently scheduled HD DVD title 'Bee Movie' has also been canceled. At press time there was no official comment from DreamWorks Animation.
Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on further details of Paramount/DreamWorks transition to Blu-ray as they're announced.

Paramount stops HD DVD production
By Thomas K. Arnold
Feb 29, 2008
A week after announcing it would return to Blu-ray Disc now that Toshiba has given up on its failed HD DVD technology, Paramount Home Entertainment says it is ending production of HD DVD discs.
The studio's final two HD DVD releases will be "Things We Lost in the Fire" and "Into the Wild," both coming March 4.
Paramount is expected to start rolling out Blu-ray Discs in the summer. Until then, titles will be released in standard DVD only.

Universal Brings 'Atonement' to HD DVD

Yes, you read right. Universal's 'American Gangster' -- released on the same day that Toshiba announced it would drop HD DVD support -- topped Neilsen VideoScan's First Alert high-def disc charts for the week ending February 24, 2008, outselling the top Blu-ray release ('Michael Clayton') by nearly 2:1.
Of course, the remaining nine titles on VideoScan's high-def best sellers chart were all Blu-ray titles, giving the format yet another weekly win in overall sales, with Blu-ray commanding 77% of all high-def disc sales for the week. (Thanks to Robert for the correction!)

In a further sign that Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray has won the high-definition format war, Paramount Pictures home entertainment unit has said it will release its last HD DVD titles on Tuesday.
The company intends to switch to Blu-ray after it offers "Things We Lost in the Fire" and "Into the Wild" in HD DVD.
Paramount said Friday it is in the process of determining its Blu-ray release schedule.
Universal Studios said last week it was shifting its focus to Sony's Blu-ray standard.
That announcement came after Toshiba Corp. said it would no longer develop, make or market players and recorders in HD DVD, the standard it invented.
Blu-ray won another key battle last month when Warner Bros. Entertainment chose it as the exclusive format for its releases.
Other Blu-ray backers are Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Co. and News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox.
Paramount is a division of Viacom Inc.

Atonement' Concludes Universal's HD DVD Support
March 03, 2008
Universal Studios Home Entertainment's support of HD DVD finally has an end date of March 18. Ironically enough, the studio most loyal to the now defunct high definition format will close its multi-hundred run of releases with Atonement.
Previously we were led to believe Charlie Wilson's War would bring a close to HD DVD at Universal after the studio had released cover art and disc specs prior to an official title announcement. Now Universal has removed any sign of an HD DVD version of Charlie Wilson's War from their website, passing the last title honors to Atonement.
Universal's decision may have been influenced by Paramount's move last week. Rather than draw out HD DVD for another month or two, Paramount chose to abruptly end their support with Things We Lost in the Fire and Into the Wild on March 4. Other planned HD DVD titles such as Bee Movie, Sweeney Todd, The Kite Runner, The Jack Ryan Collection, There Will Be Blood, and Cloverfield were canceled. It's widely believed all these titles will appear on Blu-ray Disc by this summer.
Universal has dropped no hints as to when they'll announce their first Blu-ray Disc title, other than to say they will be supporting Sony's high definition format and are working on getting titles ready for release. We'll be sure to inform you of the big announcement once it's made.
