Ricoh Exhibits Optical Device Compatible with CD, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD

"Ricoh Co. Ltd. exhibited Multiple Format Compatible Plate (MFCP), an optical device that enables the playback of multiple optical disk formats with a single objective lens when set in front of the lens, at InterOpto '07 held from July 11-13, 2007.

The device is compatible with four standards, namely CD, DVD, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

When used in the optical system of the optical head in an optical disc drive, the device can eliminate the need of so-called two lens setup in which two lenses are provided for use with CD/DVD and the next-generation DVD such as Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD.

The company said that, while MFCP is required to be added, the number of optical parts in the entire optical head may be decreased compared with the case of the two lens setup, thereby reducing the size of the optical system of the optical head.

"With the two lens setup, light beams are incident on the respective objective lenses," a Ricoh demonstrator said. "Thus, unlike a single lens setup, it requires additional optical parts, such as a mirror, to adjust the optical path."

Ricoh's MFCP comes in three main models, one that supports four formats of CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc/HD DVD, one that is compatible with three formats of CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc or CD/DVD/HD DVD, and one that works with both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD..."

"Hello boys, I'm back" (ID4)

HD DVD Hardware, Content Sales Outpace Blu-Ray in the USA – Promo Group.
HD DVD Promo Group Claims Win over B-Ray in the U.S.

The North American HD DVD promotional group has announced that sales of HD DVD hardware and content substantially increased in the second quarter of the year, based on the numbers from different market tracking firms. Meanwhile, according to the promo group, sales of Blu-ray standalone players as well as content dropped in Q2 2007.

Overall HD DVD hardware sales were up 37% from Q1 to Q2 2007, while software sales experienced a 20% increase in growth. During the same timeframe, overall Blu-ray standalone players’ sales saw a 27% decline from Q1 to Q2, and Blu-ray software sales were down 5%. The data released by HD DVD camp is reportedly based on NPD reports, Nielsen Netratings reports and point of sale data from the studios.

According to the promotional group, the success of HD DVD players on the market is mainly a result of price-drop on entry-level Toshiba HD DVD player to $299 in Q2, which expanded the installed base of dedicated HD DVD players to over 180 thousand in the region.

“The numbers are clear – HD DVD is steadily gaining momentum and market share. With HD DVD CE players now at MSRP prices starting at $299 and with strong marketing campaigns around new HD DVD titles with web-enabled interactive features, we're continuing to raise the bar for the consumer experience,” said said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD promotional group.

Toshiba, who is the leader of the HD DVD promo group, does not consider Sony PlayStation 3 game console with built-in Blu-ray drive as a player, otherwise, it would have to admit that sales of Blu-ray playback capable devices have surpassed a million units milestone some time ago. Nevertheless, given that standalone Blu-ray players are not that popular, whereas PS3s are used mainly for gaming, not high-definition movies playback, sales of Blu-ay discs was down 5% quarter-over-quarter in spite of the fact that installed base of Blu-ray hardware is times larger compared to HD DVD.

According to a research report by Consumer Electronics Association, most consumers are basing their purchasing decisions on pricing. Since HD DVD hardware pricing has already dropped from $499 to $299 since the first players were introduced last year, the consumers are likely to continue adopting HD DVD instead of Blu-ray for high-definition movie experience.

“With the total number of titles available for each format differing by only 20-30 titles at this time, the real-world gap in content between the two formats is in actuality not as large as many would perceive. Consumers in the US and Europe continue to show the greatest sensitivity to price, rather than content or branding, in their purchase decision for standalone high-definition players,” said Paul Erickson, market analyst with IMS Research.

HD DVD promo group also said that by holiday season about one thousand of HD DVD titles will be on the market.

Zero Tolerance to Release Girlvana 3 on HD DVD

CHATSWORTH, Calif. - Zero Tolerance is the latest adult studio to embrace HD DVD technology with the August 7 release of director Mike Quasar's Girlvana 3.

"We're releasing the HD DVD version simultaneously with the standard DVD," company rep Dom B. told AVN. "We’re coming out with two versions – the standard DVD comes in a big box, and the HD DVD comes in a smaller case which will contain both standard and HD discs inside."

Dom told AVN that the company chose Girlvana 3 as its first HD DVD release based on the title's high production values.

"All three of our labels [Zero Tolerance, Third Degree and Black Ice] have been shooting in HD for a while," he said. "We shot Girlvana 3 back in January and discussed putting it out in HD at that time. The movie is just like the other two in the series; they’ve been bestsellers, small vignettes with beautiful girls, beautiful locations, nice lighting. People are worried that they're going to see pimples and warts with hi-def porn, but this one has a really glossy, high-end, look like the Discovery HD channel.

Girlvana 3 features a bevy of porn beauties including Francesca Le, Tory Lane, Nikki Benz, Stephanie Swift, Audrey Bitoni, Puma Swede, Rebeca Linares, Annette Schwarz, Holly Morgan, Lena Nicole, Abbey Brooks, Riley Evans, Amber Rayne, Mikayla, Franchezca Valentina, Regan Reese and Zoe Britton.

Sister label Third Degree will release Mike Quasar's Dreamgirls as its first HD DVD title in September. The vignette-based title featured Adam & Eve contract girl Carmen Luvana as part of a behind-the-scenes tradeoff -- in return for Luvana's services, Zero Tolerance allowed its contract girl Courtney Cummz to appear in Adam & Eve's Eden.

"For now, we will probably just use HD DVD for our special titles, maybe two or or three a year until the market for high-definition really picks up; then, we will do it all the way," Dom said.

Warner finds way of making more money out of 300 HD DVD

Warner Home Video has revealed that it plans to use the web-enabled features on its forthcoming American HD DVD release of the blockbuster comic book adaptation 300 to make even more money out of fans of the film.

In addition to web-enabled functionality allowing users to re-edit sections of the movie and share the material with other consumers, the company is also going to use the features to sell 300 merchandise. Unsurprisingly, the first such merchandise looks set to be 300-themed ringtones and mobile phone wallpaper. Customers will be able to use the remote control from their HD DVD player to enter their mobile phone number, and will then be sent information on how to access the wallpapers and ringtones for $1.99 each.
As yet, there's been no word on whether or not the UK HD DVD release, set to follow later this year, will include similar features. Although we won't miss them if it doesn't, as the opportunity to milk more money out of consumers isn't the kind of feature that HCC has been looking forward to seeing come out of HD DVD's web-enabled functionality.

"HD-DVD-Player could likewise still come from Denon. The HiFi Edelmarke does not only want to concentrate on Blu ray the Disc: “Denon sees itself further obligated to offer to its customers the largest selection of maximumqualitative home maintenance products and therefore our future plans do not close the introduction of other High definition products in other formats out”, thus Joe Stinziano, Denons senior Vice President for Sales and marketing, in a press release. When it will give the first HD-DVD-Player of Denon, Denon Germany could not say, confirmed however appropriate plans"

Although this has not been officially announced for the HD-EP10 & HD-XE1 HD DVD players supporting 1080p output, the same firmware update could be expected for these models too.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Moves to $179, Adds Five Free HD DVDs

Thursday July 26, 3:01 am ET

SAN DIEGO, July 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today at Comic-Con International 2007, Microsoft Corp. announced it will lower the price of the popular Xbox 360™ HD DVD Player from $199 to $179 ERP (United States only) starting Aug. 1, 2007, and will add five free HD DVD movies for anyone purchasing an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. In addition, Microsoft further solidified the Xbox 360 as the ultimate high-definition (HD) entertainment platform, with key announcements around the HD DVD launches of "300" from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and "Heroes: Season 1" from Universal Studios.

To promote the HD DVD versions of "300" and "Heroes: Season 1," Microsoft unveiled exclusive content for Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. Xbox LIVE will offer "300" on demand in HD starting Aug. 14, and is working with Warner Bros. at Comic-Con on a Bringing It Home campaign featuring "300" and other Warner Bros. properties. In advance of the street date for the "Heroes: Season 1" HD DVD boxed set, Xbox LIVE members will be able to download for free the show's pilot episode in high definition for a limited time. Members will also be able to download trailers, teaser scenes and other promotional materials highlighting the "Heroes: Season 1" boxed set on HD DVD.

Already the most affordable high-definition player available, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best solution for movie lovers seeking HD content in the highest possible resolution. The player's price reduction to $179 (U.S. ERP) continues to set the bar for value, making the Xbox 360 platform the most affordable solution for consumers seeking the broadest, most compelling selection of next-generation gaming and HD video experiences.

"With the price reduction to $179, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player continues to be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "From the beginning, we set out to offer Xbox 360 owners an unrivaled high-definition experience, with a choice of optical discs on the HD DVD format and digital downloads through Xbox LIVE Marketplace -- both of which have a selection of the best content Hollywood has to offer. Today's announcements around '300' and 'Heroes: Season 1' are great examples of how we believe HD content can be offered to consumers."

In addition to the price drop, Microsoft is extending Toshiba's highly successful "Perfect Offer" of five free HD DVD discs to Xbox 360 consumers. Previously exclusive to Toshiba HD DVD Players, with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player at the new low price of $179 ERP, consumers can choose five HD DVD titles for free from a selection of 15 popular titles through a mail-in offer. With a retail value of over $140 (U.S.), this promotion makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player one of the most compelling offerings for consumers looking to make the leap into HD this holiday season.

Edit: Är säker på att Target kommer att sälja en hel del add-ons

Lite-On IT may land OEM orders for Xbox 360 external HD DVD-ROM drives
[Monday 30 July 2007]

As Microsoft will lower the retail price of its Xbox 360 external HD DVD-ROM drives from US$199 to US$179 in August and may therefore seek additional OEM makers to reduce the production cost of the drive, Taiwan-based Lite-On IT is likely to secure OEM orders from Microsoft, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Microsoft's price cut is in response to Sony lowering the price of its PlayStation 3 game console, the sources indicated.

While Toshiba is currently the only OEM maker of Xbox 360 external HD DVD-ROM drives, Microsoft is expected to seek one or two more OEM makers to minimize production costs, the sources noted. Lite-On IT, with strong competitiveness in lowering costs, may become an additional OEM maker, the sources pointed out. Lite-On IT is currently an OEM maker of Xbox 360 internal DVD-ROM drives, the sources said.

Best Buy Drops 360 HD DVD Player to $149

HD DVD getting more and more affordable

While Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is officially $179.99 starting today, it would seem that some retailers have come up with sales initiatives of their own. The first retailer to make a move is apparently Best Buy, which has lowered the price on the HD DVD Player to $149.99 according to this online product page.

At the moment it's not clear if this is simply a limited-time offer or if Best Buy is going to keep it at that price for an extended period, but when you consider that a purchase of the unit also includes five free HD DVD movies, it may be a deal that many consumers can't resist.

Leading HD authors to speak at DVD Forum Euro conference

Innovative implementations of HD DVD's HDi interactive, web-connected features will be highlights of the forthcoming DVD Forum Europe 2007 conference held in Berlin on 3 September. Beside the architects of the DVD and HD DVD standard specifications, leading authoring houses showcasing creative aspects of the high definition format include Imagion, Enteractive, DMP, Nixbu and CMC.

Speaking at the event will be Hans Henseleit, founder of Enteractive at Hamburg, that has become one of Europe's leading DVD pre-mastering studios, and has completed the first HD DVD game.

Lubomir Celar, director of Prague-based Digital Media Production, will be sharing his experience. In partnership with Microsoft and Sonopress, DMP created in 2004 the first European DVD with WMV High Definition Video content, Tomb Raider: Lara Croft - The Cradle of Life, for German publisher Concorde Home Entertainment.

Also, contributing to the Berlin conference will be founder and managing director of Imagion AG, Michael Becker, who produced Europe's first HD DVD title, Elephants Dream. The title recently won the Video Encoding and Technical Achievement Award at the DVD Association's 2007 DVDA Excellence Awards in the US.

Another participant to the demonstration panel will be French authoring studio CMC that has produced the world's first THX-certified HD DVD title, Pan's labyrinth, for Wild Side Video.

Speaking as well will be Niran Huesing, from publisher and producer Nixbu Entertainment. The company has already built a catalogue of 48 HD DVD titles and is pushing the envelope with a brand new MuNa (Music Navigator) HD DVD project.

Kilroy Hughes, Senior Digital Media Architect of the Consumer Media Technology Group at Microsoft, will demonstrate the range of HDi features. In the same group, Xavier Pouyat, Program Manager EMEA, in charge of the deployment of HD DVD technologies for Microsoft for the Europe region, will update delegates about the company VC-1 and the other codecs as well as HD authoring solutions.

Laurent Villaume, founder and CEO of QOL, the HD DVD replication pioneer in Europe, will identify the challenges in the manufacturing of HD discs and especially in the testing and quality control in the mastering process.

Market analyses will be provided by Helen Davis Jayalath, senior analyst for the video sector at Screen Digest who will be taking stock of the current situation in next-generation formats in Europe and points to the factors that will impact on future growth.

For his part, Ben Keen, Screen Digest's director and chief analyst, will examine the market take-up and trends in consumer HD displays.

Jean-Luc Renaud, publisher & editor-in-chief of www.dvd-intelligence.com – and the conference organiser on behalf of the DVD Forum – will take a look at packaged media in the changing markeplace and assess the impact of alternative content delivery channels on the optical discs.

Other speakers on technology update sessions will be profiled shortly.

HD DVD Gets Microsoft HDi Boost

NEW YORK Microsoft's HD DVD evangelist said the company will be a difference maker in the battle between the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats.

Kevin Collins, Microsoft's HD DVD evangelism director, met with select members of the press while in town for the recent Toshiba press event, where the launch of a firmware update giving all Toshiba HD DVD players the ability to connect to the Internet was announced.

The function will enable movie producers to build key extras into HD DVD discs, including the ability to download continuously changing content.

"When the first titles with Web-enabled extras come to market, you will start to see the distinct disparity between the formats when it comes to interactivity," Collins said.

Some of the first titles with Web-enabled features coming to market include "Blood Diamond" and "The 300."

In "The 300," for example, viewers are given the ability to call up a picture-in-picture image over a scene, showing how the image looked before blue-screen computer-generated graphics were added.

In Warner Home Video's "Blood Diamond" (out now) viewers are given the chance to participate in online polls and instantly view how a response gauges with "the online community" for the film. Other extras that benefit from the connectivity include strategy-oriented video games in "The 300" (due July 31).

In a title soon to be announced, Collins said the connectivity will open the ability to make e-commerce purchases of certain apparel items featured in the film.

"With the network people can download just what they are interested in and they can get rid of what they are not interested in. You have unlimited capacity," Collins said.

In addition, some studios have encoded hidden content on discs that can be unlocked using special keys downloaded from the studio's Web site.

Written into the mandatory spec for all HD DVD players is a "persistent storage" requirement, meaning flash memory that will enable temporary downloads of extras content after network connections have been established.

Although the B-ray spec has BD Live interactivity available, Collins pointed out that no currently available dedicated B-ray Disc player offers a network connection.

"Network connectivity is not mandatory in the B-ray spec it has always been optional," Collins said. "The only player that has the ability to connect to the Internet is the PS3 and that's not BD Live compatible yet, so there is no one that can do networking."

Ultimately, Collins said market share is going to force more studios to support both formats.

"You can look at the market share numbers from Paramount for DVD they are single digit. You look at Paramount's numbers for HD, because they do both formats, they are double digit," said Collins. "When you look at market share numbers for Fox and Disney, they are double digit for DVD. You look at their market share numbers for HD discs, they are single digit, because they only do B-ray.

"Paramount, even though they have single digit share in DVD, does twice the numbers of Fox and DVD in HD because they do both formats. Shareholders are going to look to that and wonder why they are leaving money on the table," Collins continued.

Collins also said combo players for LG and Samsung and combo DVD/HD DVD discs will help to keep demand going for both formats.

Another good sign for HD DVD, Collins said, is the fact that the DVD Forum's Steering Committee recently agreed to allow Chinese manufacturers to produce HD DVD players supporting discs produced only for that region. The decision, he said, should clear the way for Chinese manufacturers to soon begin production of HD DVD players for global markets, which could lead to significant price reductions on players down the line.

"This all speaks volumes to the longevity of the HD DVD format," Collins surmised."

Pust, det här var en trevlig kväll, ska vila nu, ska ju lägga till fler Referens Titlar imorgon!

Xbox 360 HD DVD Add On sales increase on Amazon.com

It has been reported that sales of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Add On are up by over 1000% on Amazon.com (US). The 20 dollar price drop wasn't really that significant, which leads us to believe it must have been the 5 disc promotion that lead to this surge in sales.

Currently the 5 disc deal is only available in the US ... one can only wonder though that if it's only a matter of time before Europe and Canada are included in this deal given this spectacular increase of sales in the United States.
