CES is still a few days away, but several studios are providing a sneak peek at some major 2008 Blu-ray and HD DVD titles expected to be officially unveiled at the annual confab.
Among the studios previewing their 2008 plans for Home Media Magazine this week in a special pre-CES high-def studio roundtable were Warner, Fox, Sony and Paramount/DreamWorks.
On the Blu-ray front, Fox's Mike Dunn indicated that the studio is eyeing extensive day-and-date support of its top titles this year, with such current and future theatrical releases as 'Alien vs. Predator: Requiem,' 'Horton Hears a Who,' '27 Dresses,' 'The List,' 'Babylon A.D.' and M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Happening' all expected to debut simultaneously with the DVD versions.
Sony prez David Bishop similarly pledged continued day-and-date support throughout 2008, naming 'Hancock' and 'The DaVinci Code' sequel 'Angels & Demons' as two of its top titles earmarked for Blu-ray.
For HD DVD fans, Paramount/DreamWorks' Kelly Avery said the two studios will issue an extensive slate of both new releases and catalog titles, including the blockbusters 'Bee Movie' and 'Beowulf' (which have both already been announced to retailers).
Finally, format-agnostic Warner said that their high-def releases this year would include 'The Dark Knight,' 'Speed Racer,' 'Get Smart,' 'The Bucket List' and the current Will Smith smash 'I Am Legend.'
Though the titles revealed so far are likely only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we can expect to see from all next-gen supporting studios next week, all indications are that 2008 will be the biggest year yet for both high-def formats.
The 2008 Consumer Electronics Show kicks off Monday January 7th in Las Vegas. We'll be here all next week with complete coverage, so be sure to watch this space.

Specs from Panasonic's new DMP-BD50
Panasonic just introduced their new Blu-ray player, the DMP-BD50. Like we heard at the press conference, BD-Live is getting rolled out across the lineup and this unit has all the other goodies you'd expect in the latest from Panasonic: Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, PIP functionality and the Viera-link functionality for control of multiple components through a single remote. Video processing goes through the Unipher processor, a combination of chroma and deinterlacing developed by Panasonic Hollywood Laboratories. Last but not least, this player gets treated to playback of SD-based media.

Den hamnar nog överst på önskelistan om den nu verkligen kodar av DTS-HD MA internt och inte bara skickar det som bitstream. Lite oklart i artikeln.

Continue to support HD DVD but not main focus
Samsung has further added to Toshiba's woes at CES in Las Vegas by confirming to Pocket-lint its plans for HD DVD.
Anthony Marbella, Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung has told us that Samsung "Will support all formats, but with the news from Warner Bros. we will put an emphasis on Blu-ray. We will make what consumers want."
The news could mean the end of the line for the company's Duo player that allows users to watch both HD DVD and Blu-ray movies from the same unit.
When asked whether consumers wanted the Blu-ray over HD DVD, Marbella simply responded:
"Yes, especially with the shift in content to come."
Samsung has just announced its latest, and possible now last Duo player at this year's Show.
The new player, the BD-U5500 was announced on Sunday promises to play Blu-ray and HD DVD discs and offers HDMI 1.3 connection, latest BD-Java and HD DVD interactivity available, and an ethernet connection for firmware upgrades later down the line.
The BD-UP5500 also offers support for the latest audio decoding with 7.1-Ch PCM, DTS-HD High Resolution and Master audio, and Dolby TrueHD Bistream and unlike the first HD DVD and Blu-ray player from LG, the Samsung model is also a fully-functioning DVD and CD player.
We will keep you posted.

So far so good, we finally got in and the stage is setup just like last time, same desk, same podium, same signs, lets see if the news is the same. They should be starting in a few minutes, but we'd bet anything it won't kick off on time.
5:04PM - It's getting quite, here we go!
Any Parsons from Andy Parson - Blu-ray Disc Association/Pioneer takes the podium and kicks things off.

Andy. Next up is the global market, which is 2:1 as well or 66/34. Hardware sales which includes PS3 give them a 85% share internationally.

Studio market share is strongly in Blu-ray's favor, with 68.4% while HD DVD only has 22.8% exclusivity.

5:09PM - Danny Kaye from Fox takes the podium, and thanks Andy for "setting up the situation."

They are prediction to sell another 2 mil stand-alone devices and 3 mill PS3s. So by the end of 2008, they expect to have 10 million Blu-ray play back devices.

During 2007 there was about 170M in disc sales. But in 2008, they expect to see 1 billion -- man we wish we could remember what they were trying to hit last year.

5:13pm - David Bishop from Sony pictures takes the podium and points out that the PS3 they will continue to use bundled titles to help tell everyone that the PS3 is a Blu-ray player. The tour kicks off again in Toronto, then goes to Nashville Denver, Palm Beach Fl, as well as a few other markets. We leaves by wishing us a happy "blu" year and introduces Ron Sanders from Warner.
5:25PM - Ron says 2008 started out pretty exciting for Blu-ray. He gives summary of the advertising during 2007, including our favorite channel HDNet. More recently The Future is Blu and I do blu campaigns were also touted. The Future is blu commercial is show, which we've all seen a few times.
Awareness has climed to 80% of those surveyed, say they know the brand.
5:28PM - Steve Beeks, president of Lionsgate takes the podium to finish it off. Goes over the goals of the BDA, which is expected to be a watershed year in the adoption of Blu-ray. He is very confident that a market has been decided. Steve is really driving home the same stats that he seems to believe really proves the format war is over. He qoutes the LA Times, which evidently proclaimed the "format war is over." Bla, bla, bla lots of the same, look at the past, we all need to work together -- ok Steve we get it. Again he says "the consumers have made the choice" and that the end of the format war is cloer and in the word of Tommy lasorta, "go blu."
Questions time!
Q. The problem is the price of the machine, who can afford the price of the machines, what are you going to do to reduce the price?
A. Andy reminds us that pricing is up to individuals, not up to the BDA. He says we dont't do coupons, in fact we try to sneak up on everyone else.
Q. Bill from the Digital Bits asks Does Warners decision decision carry over to new line and HBO, and does the switch have anything to do with BD+.
A. No, not really, it was the consumer choice.
Q. Any chance there will be a HD DVD trade in program for Blu-ray.
A. David Bishop, said not at this time.
Q. How will you try to educate consumers that early adopters don't can't take advantage of new features.
A. Andy says bonus view is new, but prefers not to call it profile 1.1. He goes on to explain that in the DVD world the same thing happened, and people are accustomed to technology developing and the functionality of their players doesn't change. The name bonus view is to help them know its a new feature so people can check the disc before they bring it home.
How will you educate smaller markets?
We will as soon as we can, but we are starting with the larger market.
Q. Can we start talking about the Blu-ray recorders.
A. Again, Andy says it's up to the manufacturers, and the DVR is very popular.
A. He says to see Universal now and if we all asked they might change their mind.
Q. What if Toshiba, Universal and Paramount don't go blu. How do you convince consumers the war is over?
A. The market will decide.
Q. Was there a Warner pay off.
A. Ron says "I wish". He says any pay off woudl've been a drop in the bucket so the decision was not related to any payoffs.
How about a DVD/Blu-ray combo disc?
Danny says not to sacrifice space or technology so if you really have to, they could bundle a DVD.
With Blu-ray the aparent winner, are we going to see more catalogue titles?
Bob says song of the south won't be covered here today, but one of the pinnacle moments was when we decided to take out Snow white, which signaled it was mass market, sing this was a most cherished title. This time they are releasing Snow while this October. "And what's the price point Bob?" "Wow" -- and as a result we know where this is going. David Bishop says most of lived through DVD and just like it we look at the core and try to release products that are valuable to them.
Will region coding be made any clearer on the packages, given that it isn't clear, there is the risk that if someone is traveling they could buy the wrong title. Andy says he's waiting for the question. What do the lawyers say abou this? Using this to prevent trading freely internationally?
Andy "Ron you what to handle this?" Ron says, "no" "Does anyone want to take it or take it offline, "that's what happened last year, "David says, "ok we'll solve it next year."
Any chance of Direct stream digital,
Andy says the spec is already created and they don't want to break it. But we wonder how this is different then adding BD Live now?
DBStalk.com Tom Robertson, is it a global exclusivity? Ron says "yes"
That's it no more question, Andy thanks us for coming.

Will region coding be made any clearer on the packages, given that it isn't clear, there is the risk that if someone is traveling they could buy the wrong title. Andy says he's waiting for the question. What do the lawyers say abou this? Using this to prevent trading freely internationally?Andy "Ron you what to handle this?" Ron says, "no" "Does anyone want to take it or take it offline, "that's what happened last year, "David says, "ok we'll solve it next year."

While I can’t release any details, today I was ‘leaked’ a brochure for a Chinese manufactured Blu-ray Disc player. The player is currently being demonstrated to invited guests at the company’s suite at CES.
According to the tentative specifications, this player will be HDMI 1.3 and 1080p capable. While it features 5.1 analogue outputs, it appears to decode Dolby Digital and DTS only - no advanced codecs are mentioned. The player is apparently based on a Sigma Designs core.
Sorry that I can’t be more specific, I don’t want to upset my source on this one. I will attempt to get in the loop regarding any formal press information on this unit.
One thing I can assure you - the cheaper price point players are coming.

CES Today I had the opportunity to speak with the folks at THX about their certification program and plans for Blu-ray Disc and the home theater market in 2008.
THX's booth at CES is certainly not the largest, but it is VERY busy. THX has come a long way from when they were under the LucasFilm umbrella and certifying cinemas 25 years ago. They since have added programs to certify home theater components, televisions (display devices), mobile audio systems, home video media (VHS, LD, DVD), and game audio.
Taking a tour of the booth revealed several displays demonstrating various THX technologies, including a car parked there in the booth! You could also get your picture taken with their famous mascot Tex, the little robot seen in the now famous THX cinema trailers. Naturally, I couldn't resist.
Getting down to business, I asked about what kinds of plans THX had for HD media, specifically Blu-ray Disc. While there is one THX certified Blu-ray Disc (Lionsgate's Terminator 2: Judgment Day), getting the studios to pay the additional cost to have THX certify the process is a major stumbling block. It's not a matter of looking at the final master and approving it, all the steps in the process have to be inspected: be it the original film and sound elements, the telecine bay, the monitors used for the picture and sound, and the disc production facilities. T2 required Lionsgate to use two different film elements since either one had certain problems with different scenes, such as visual effects shots. Getting all these elements inspected and approved takes time and effort, and in the end that means money. Interestingly enough, they spoke of a couple BD titles seen by many as 5 star picture and sound transfers that could use tweaking if they had QC'ed them!
Another interesting tidbit of information is about the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As we all know, Paramount's deal does not cover Steven Spielberg films, and so Indy 4 is being prepped for Blu-ray Disc for release sometime late this year. Apparently, Paramount is reluctant to pony up the additional cost for the disc to be certified, so it may take George Lucas to personally step in and make it happen. Be sure to let Paramount know we want this!
Moving on to games, the THX logo has appeared on several games for the Sony Playstation 3. Games like Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, and Blast Factor have had their audio certified by THX to give the best possible sound. THX reps were sure to stress that the program does not cover graphics or gameplay. Just the audio.
THX has started certifying display devices. In the past projectors and screens have received certification, and now it has grown to direct view plasma TVs. The first sets to be THX certified will be available from Panasonic and LG. Not only is it a quality certification, but like their audio equipment it allows the TV to add a THX Cinema mode for movie watching. THX Cinema mode is like a built-in THX Optimizer which presets the display for the correct levels of brightness, contrast, and color temperature. How many of us have wished we could calibrate our display with the push of one button? Now we can. THX certified media can also carry metadata telling devices down the chain what the proper settings are. We also briefly touched on audio: specifically that THX Cinema, THX Surround EX and THX Ultra2 Cinema modes are now available with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in the latest receivers. This assures that when we are watching our movies on Blu-ray we are getting the best possible sound.
While the current THX Demo Disc II is DVD only, I was informed that a Blu-ray version is currently in production. THX is very excited about High Definition and the future of Blu-ray Disc. I would like to thank Ed Rice, Allan Scholinick, and Warren Mansfield for helping me on my visit.

Amidst mounting speculation that it is soon to shift alliances, Universal Studios has confirmed that it will not be making any new HD DVD title announcements at this year's CES.
Though previous years have seen a cavalcade of title announcements from HD DVD-supporting studios at CES, this year's deafening silence from Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks has only fueled speculation that one (or both) of the studios are plotting a move to format neutrality or perhaps even Blu-ray exclusivity.
While Universal is issuing a terse "no comment" in response to the persistent rumors, a studio spokesperson did confirm for us that they will not be making any new title announcements at this year's CES.
Paramount similarly declined to make any new title announcements at CES, but as we first reported Monday, the studio is shooting down reports that it plans to abandon the format
