Giz Explainer: Philips' Spring Product Line-Up

Philips is promoting a new Blu-ray player, the BDP7200 which is their first profile 1.1 player. There's nothing very thrilling about it except its sexy design and its low MSRP of $350. That's if you can find it—hopefully it will be in wider production than its predecessor.

Philips launches BDP7200 BonusView-enabled Blu-ray player

Philips BDP7200 Profile 1.1-capable Blu-ray Disc playerPhilips has announced the second generation in its line of Blu-ray players with the BDP7200, sporting 1080p/24 and Deep Color support, and BonusView (aka Profile 1.1) picture-in-picture capability. The player can also upscale DVDs to 1080p, and control connected devices using the EasyLink HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) protocols. Philips will release the BDP7200 in April for a $349 price, putting it towards the low end on the Blu-ray player price list, but the one thing we wish Philips had let us know was the level of audio codec support, with no mention at all of DTS or Dolby's high-end audio formats.

Hands-on with the Philips BDP-7200 Blu-ray player

Philips just wrapped up their press conference, and we got our hands on their new BDP-7200 Blu-ray player. It looks like a pretty standard Profile 1.1 player, albeit with rounded corners and bezel pretties to match the language across the Philips Design Collection. The press release is kinda sketchy on the internals of this player -- no surprise, as Philips is emphasizing style over specs in their lineup. Consistent with that play, features like Philips EasyLink (aka CEC) gets billing over the internals. So the jury's still out on how the DeepColor, 1080p24 looks out of this unit.
