/Shhhh Postad 05 April 2007 - 20:23
HD DVD Beats Blu-ray
"The HD DVD format wins out because it is simply the genuine article. Blu-Ray hardware and SOFTWARE is trailing behind HD DVD, which offers genuine benefits." The folks at Home Cinema Choice have made their call and given Tosh’s deck the thumbs up. The HD-XE1 is top dollar according to Home Cinema Choice...HD DVD has landed a major hit on Blu-Ray, with the Toshiba HD-XE1 winning the Best Hi-Def Player at the Home Cinema Choice awards. The deck saw off competition from two Blu-ray units, by Panasonic and Samsung, to take top honours. Redigerat av diabolo, 05 April 2007 - 20:39. Postad 05 April 2007 - 20:46

Ja? Update for Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to Add DTS, Improve Compatibility
“We plan on shipping an update to the Xbox 360 HD DVD player in early to mid spring. In this update we will be adding DTS output, improved Audio, and improved title compatibility,” relayed the Microsoft employee, according to what he had heard from the Xbox team. “The variability there is that this is a software project and we are fixing/enhancing a lot of things and we want to make sure we get them right. So it is difficult to give an exact day for the update.” Postad 06 April 2007 - 09:25

HEY, LET'S LIE, PS3 KICKING ASS DOWN UNDER
"The results of the PS3's Australian launch sales are in, and more "records" have been achieved. In the ten days that followed its March 23rd release, more than 27,000 PS3s were sold. Not only is that the biggest surge of launch sales Australia has ever seen, it's also not true. This news has been everywhere today and I was going to end off the day on a good note for Sony gamers, but when I did some backtracking on this site for some kangaroo pictures to use for this post, I realized these claims are entirely false. Cue the dramatic 9/11 Loose Change conspiracy music, let's look at the facts from the past: Australian 4 day Xbox 360 launch: 30,421 consoles sold Australian 4 day Nintendo Wii launch: 32,901 consoles sold Australian ten day PlayStation 3 launch: 27,083 consoles sold Congratulations Sony, I was going to Photoshop Sixaxis controllers into happy kangaroo hands just for you, but you blew it. Instead you get this dead kangaroo. How can I possibly end off on a good note now? Oh, here Europe, you get Super Rub a Dub bath time fun on the PlayStation Network, and we don't. FUCK YAH!" A New Studio Becomes HD-DVD Exclusive
"First Look Pictures, a smaller company, has just announced they will be supporting HD-DVD exclusively with the release of "The Contract" with John Cusack & Morgan Freek on 7/24. The title is priced at $28.99 on DVD & $32.99 on HD-DVD. First Look is a studio much like Anchor Bay, meaning they are a smaller studio but their titles sell pretty well when they are released because they are aimed at a specific audience. First Look was recently bought by NuImage who owns Millenium Pictures, the company behind several big movies, such as The Black Dahlia last year. All of Millenium & NuImage's movies will now be distributed by First Look instead of other companies like Universal who has handled their work in the past. The first Milleinum Pictures release handled by First Look is "The Contract" and many more should be following as the year goes on according to Millenium's CEO. First Look also has a large library of titles under their banner as well. So First Look could end up releasing quite a few titles this year that could make an impact on the format wars. You can read more about "The Contract" HD-DVD release on the HD-DVDWorld thread in the HD-DVD Bargains section of this forum." The miracles of AVC by Disney
King Arthur Director's Cut (Blu-ray) PQ 3/5 SQ 4/5 HD extras 0/5 BD-50Gb "Slight color banding appears in all the foggy scenes as well as on some of the performers faces' in fire lit shots (look at Dagonet's face as he turns away from his son when Arthur and his men make camp -- the colors just don't smoothly blend from one shade to the next and the effect is distracting). Shadow delineation, as well, leaves a lot to be desired and there are moments when there is literally no separation between certain dark elements, robbing the film of some depth despite its vibrant reds and greens (watch the first round table meeting where the actors' black hair is the same as the shadowy corners of the well-lit room). Fine object detail is average -- while it's occasionally crisp, there are moments of unintentional softness. For a great example of this problem, watch as Cedric pillages a town after an approach by sea -- notice the lack of clarity on the tiny ships in the distance. This issue is peppered throughout the film, with background elements varying sharpness, sometimes from shot to shot within the same scene. Fine texture detail is also a mixed bag -- at times the small pieces of Arthur's chain mail are well rendered, but at other times, they give the picture screen door fits. Skintones are warm and natural, but the stubble and pores are sometimes more visible in long shots than they are in close-ups. The source doesn't have any noise, but there are a few print scratches that flicker across the picture from time to time. The contrast is generally above average -- although the snow scenes are too drenched in blue light to be as impressive as they could be otherwise. Finally, the grain is so heavy at times that it's more distinct than the other images on the screen, detracting from some of the gorgeous imagery in the film." Wawawiwa! gratulerar little Billy ![]() "An A.C. Nielsen VideoScan Tracking Report for the week ending March 18, released to the public by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, reveals some interesting data about HD sales. Cumulative sales of HD-DVD are at 708,600 units, while cumulative sales of Blu-ray are 844,000 units. But those numbers and ones to follow come with a disclaimer. Totals do not include retailers that aren't using VideoScan, among them Wal-Mart. Still, there are some interesting things here. First, lets talk title count. Universal leads the HD-DVD pack with 62 titles, closely followed by Warner Brothers at 61 titles, with Paramount contributing 16, Genius 7, and HBO 1. On the Blu-ray side, Sony is on top with 40 titles, closely followed by Warner Brothers, who've released 38 Blu-ray titles. Fox has 26 titles, Disney/Buena Vista 25, LionsGate 18, Paramount 16, and MGM 11. Totals? HD-DVD now offers 158 titles, Blu-ray 189." "Will the HD-DVD gain? With believing of them the remarks of Olivier Van Wynendaele, responsible HD-DVD at Toshiba Europe, nothing is surer. Whereas Sony multiplies with excess the official statements announcing that the battle is already gained for Blu-Ray, one of the strong men of the unfavourable camp has just advanced a very credible theory which would come to contradict them. Indeed, the final victory will come according to him from the Chinese manufacturers who have just lined up side of the HD-DVD to the great joy of Toshiba. A perhaps astonishing declaration of premium-access, the camp of Blu-Ray having manufacturers such as Philips, Samsung, Panasonic and of course Sony on its side. Nevertheless the fact is that approximately 70% of readers DVD currently in circulation are manufactured by small Chinese marks which manage today to provide material of quality at all small price. Famous readers DVD to 39€ even less, it is them! If Toshiba has just announced the fall of its reader HD-DVD to less than 400$ in the United States, one could see unloading in the next months of Chinese readers HD-DVD to 300$, even in an immediate future at almost 200$. Ultra-competitive prices, especially beside the Blu-Ray readers who are worth on average between 900 and 1300$/€ ! Will the Chinese manufacturers develop Blu-Ray readers? The answer is summarized with one “not” very strict for the moment and this for rather ironic reasons. While putting in its good camp numbers prestigious manufacturers, Sony had not expected that those would refuse the competition of Chinese being given their enormous financial investments in this format much more expensive than the HD-DVD. Toshiba, which by supporting the HD-DVD, risks much less, thus has just marked an enormous point in the battle by opening the door of its format to Chinese." Toshiba's HD-DVD Player: $306 At Amazon
"The high-def DVD player price hits an all-time low. By Phillip Swann Washington, D.C. (April 7, 2007) -- Toshiba's new HD-A2 HD-DVD player is now available for $304.88 at Amazon.com. The company's second-generation HD-DVD player, which was launched last October, has a suggested retail price of $399. Toshiba on April 1 lowered the suggested price from $499. Amazon.com's new price is the lowest ever at the e-commerce site. Toshiba's HD-DVD format is battling with the Sony-supported Blu-ray format for the new high-def DVD audience. Toshiba now is also offering five free HD-DVD movies for the purchase of any Toshiba HD-DVD player.
