LG to launch its Super Multi Blue in the UK

"LG has announced its upcoming UK launch of the Super Multi Blue hybrid HD DVD and Blu-ray disc player, due to hit the stores in May according to this Pocket Lint report. However, even though LG has already launched it a few months ago in the US, the UK launch price will be £1,000 (~$2,000) :P , working out around double that of its current US price. As a result, this player will only be affordable to early adoptors with deep pockets who want to save space under their set by purchasing a dual format player.

According to LG, while everyone agrees that Blu-ray and HD DVD will revolutionise the home entertainment market with the growing demand for content in HD, the launch of this player will eliminate the decision of whether to go with Blu-ray or HD DVD. However, like the US version of the BH100, this player will likely lack certain HD DVD features, such as HDi, Picture in Picture and so on." ;) hmm.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

VC-1

"VC-1 is the informal name of the SMPTE 421M video codec standard initially developed by Microsoft. WMV3, better known as Windows Media Video 9 codec, served as the basis for development of the VC-1 codec specification. On April 3, 2006, SMPTE announced the formal release of the VC-1 standard as SMPTE 421M. Its most popular implementation is Windows Media Video 9."

"Although widely considered to be Microsoft's product, there are actually 15 companies in the VC-1 patent pool (as of 17 August 2006). As an SMPTE standard, VC-1 is open to implementation by anyone, although implementers are hypothetically required to pay licensing fees to the MPEG LA, LLC licensing body or directly to its members who hold essential patents on the format (since it is a non-exclusive licensing body).[1]

Single-chip audio processor supports Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD formats

"Austin, Texas— Cirrus Logic Inc has introduced a single-chip audio processor, the CS49700, designed to meet the demanding processing tasks associated with emerging standards, including next-generation HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc DVD high-definition DVD formats.
Available in volume production, the CS49700 enables mass-market home theater products, such as audio/video receivers, combination high-definition DVD players and receivers and Blu-Ray Disc and HD-DVD players, at all price points.

For next-generation Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats, audio processor ICs must support up to six surround-sound audio algorithms, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS Master and DTS High Resolution, any of which may be featured within high-definition DVD disc media. The CS49700 supports each of these audio formats and is designed for home theater products such as mid- and low-tier.

With its 32-bit, dual-core structure, the CS49700 generates true parallel processing power of 1.8 giga operations per second (300 million instructions per second).

Pricing: $7.50 in 100,000 quantities.
Availability: Volume production."

Dedicated HD DVD players outsell Blu-ray counterparts

"Many Americans had April 17 circled on their calendars, as it was D-Day for income tax returns. The North American HD DVD Promotional Group would also like to remind us that the 17th was also the first birthday of the HD DVD format, as the first players and movies hit store shelves on April 17, 2006.

To mark its first birthday, the HD DVD Promotional Group has announced that sales of dedicated HD DVD players have topped 100,000 in the US. That figure does not include PC HD DVD drives or the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, giving HD DVD a lead over Blu-ray in the standalone player department (Sony had sold only 25,000 dedicated players as of January). Of course, if you factor in the over 1.05 million PlayStation 3s with built-in Blu-ray support sold in the US through February, HD DVD's lead disappears. However, HD DVD advocates are quick to point out that the PS3 is a console, and so it is unclear how many of those consumers purchased the PS3 for Blu-ray, or how many of them are using it now to view Blu-ray movies.

HD DVD is the first format to break the $400 barrier, with Toshiba's newest player arriving to the market at $399. That has proven to be an attractive price point for retailers, according to the consumer electronics manufacturer. "Retailers are showing a significant increase in sales volume this month so far," said Toshiba America VP of marketing Jodi Sally. "On Amazon.com, our HD DVD players continue to rank among the top ten best sellers of all DVD players, which says a lot about how consumers relate to price."

So far, April has seen some good news emerging from the HD DVD camp. Earlier this month, we learned that HD DVD has taken the early lead in the European market, helped by the preference of European movie studios for the format. The European studios, which operate on leaner budgets than their Hollywood counterparts, like HD DVD's lower manufacturing costs. One executive said that a Blu-ray replication line costs between €1.7 million and €1.8 million and is capable of churning out 10,000-15,000 discs per day, compared to 40,000 discs per day on an HD DVD line that cost less than half of that. As a result, HD DVD titles lead Blu-ray titles in Europe by a 3.5-to-1 margin.

On this side of the Atlantic, it has been a different story. Blu-ray has been steadily gaining ground in terms of discs sold, and the format still has more backing from the movie studios than does its competitor. The arrival of the PS3, which Blu-ray backer Sony is using as a beachhead for the format helps as well.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind, however. Consoles account for only a portion of the consumer electronics sector, and at some point, people who would never buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360 will be looking to get in on the high-definition goodness. For many consumers, price will play a big role in determining which format to embrace, and even with Sony's recent price cuts, the least expensive Blu-ray player is still $200 more than the least-expensive HD DVD player. That's going to resonate with price-conscious consumers. Hybrid players? A small and very expensive niche in what is currently a niche market.

One point bears repeating: it's going to be a long time before either format displaces DVD. Early adopters are few and far between, and the picture from a $49 DVD player will look "good enough" to many consumers for years to come. Even if the two high-def formats take less than the nine years that DVD took to surpass the VCR, we're still some distance away from the finish line in the race between the two formats."

Warner Announces First Web-enabled HD DVD Title

This big news just came in... Had to post it before going back to "hibernation".

Warner Home Video has announced that Blood Diamond will debut on HD DVD, July 2. The main feature will be presented in 1080p High Definition 16x9 2.40:1 with Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 audio tracks. It includes commentary by director Edward Zwick, featurettes and production diaries as bonus materials. Each will be priced at $28.99 SRP.

The HD DVD of Blood Diamond will be the first HD DVD to include web-enabled extras which allows viewers to use their players to offer opinions in WHV's online polls and to view other exciting special features such as maps of conflict pertaining to war-torn areas in Africa.

The Blood Diamond HD DVD will be the first disc of any high-definition format to feature web-enabled extras, taking advantage of the network functionality that each and every HD DVD player is equipped with. Note that the playback of the movie does not need a network/Internet connection, it is the web-enabled extras that needs the connection.

The HD DVD version of Blood Diamond will also contain the In-Movie Experience (IME), an exclusive interactive feature that allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material while the movie is running. In addition, for the first time WHV will include the new Focus Points feature that takes the viewer to exciting in-depth featurettes and production diaries. The IME for Blood Diamond allows viewers to embark on an epic journey with director Edward Zwick, charting the emotional and filmmaking challenges of Blood Diamond.

Those with 1st-generation HD DVD players may be required to update their player's firmware to v2.1 in order to enjoy the web-enabled extras as the v2.1 firmware update includes enhancement to network functionality of the player, such as the handling of web "cookies".'

Warner Brings 'Blood Diamond' to Blu-ray, HD DVD

What's more, though both versions will share identical tech specs, including matching 1080p transfers, supplemental content will be far from identical. The basic suite of extras are the same, including a filmmaker's commentary, four featurettes and a music video; however, the HD DVD will include a raft of exclusive cutting-edge features omitted from the Blu-ray release.
The HD DVD of 'Blood Diamond' will be the first next-gen title to include web-enabled extras, including allowing viewers to use their players to offer opinions in Warner's online polls, as well as view other exciting special features such as maps of conflict pertaining to war-torn areas in Africa.
Furthermore, the HD DVD boasts an In-Movie Experience (IME) video commentary with additional behind-the-scenes and interview footage. And for the first time on 'Blood Diamond,' Warner will include the new Focus Points feature that takes the viewer to exciting in-depth featurettes and production diaries.

Despite the considerable differences between the Blu-ray and HD DVD, Warner has set an identical list price of $28.99 for each. ;)

Certainly, Warner's decision to offer such an impressive suite of extras on the HD DVD of 'Blood Diamond,' yet withhold them from the Blu-ray, makes a significant departure from the studio's previous "format agnostic" approach of issuing identical versions on both formats.

Even more notably, it strikes yet another blow for Blu-ray's much-maligned BD-Java authoring environment, which continues to be held up due to production delays. As such, advanced features such as IME remain unavailable on current Blu-ray releases. In the past, however, with such IME-enhanced titles as 'The Matrix Trilogy' and "Batman Begins,' Warner has chosen to simply withhold their release releasing a Blu-ray version until a future . Their decision to simply downgrade the Blu-ray for 'Blood Diamond,' however, is sure to generate controversy.

We've posted full specs for both versions of 'Blood Diamond' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, under June 5 and July 2, respectively. Stay tuned for final details in the days ahead, including box art. Watch this space!

:P

Why Warner's Total Hi Def Disc (THD) is Good for Consumers

I'll admit, when Warner announced it had developed a manufacturing process whereby both a Blu-Ray Disc and HD-DVD version of a movie could happily co-exist on one shiny silver disc, I was not overly impressed. Early speculation was that the new THD format (Total Hi Def) would be somehow limited in storage vs. the "true" BD and HD-DVD formats (not true) or that it would lead to even more confusion in this destructive next generation DVD format war. But at CES, listening to Warner's presentation, getting the real details in a Q&A session, and actually seeing a live demo, I may be coming around.

Consumers tend to be risk-averse. When FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) creeps in, most wallets close up like they're stuck together with industrial-strength Velcro. Warner's incentive in developing this new format is to eliminate the risk (the FUD) in consumers' minds about which format will "win" the war. With Total HD, consumers can safely buy a movie in full high definition 1080p resolution on a THD disc, play it on either format player, and know that it will continue to be playable in the future even if one format becomes more prevalent, and they upgrade to a different format player some time down the road.

In addition to Warner, both HBO and New Line studios have pledged their support to the new format, and new THD titles should be coming out in the second half of 2007. When queried directly, a New Line executive hinted that the popular "Lord of the Rings" series may be an early title on the new format ("it's a high priority title for us" were his exact words). And that is what I believe will lead to success of high definition discs in general - the availability of popular movies in high definition.
In terms of the specifics, Warner said there is no reason to believe that they will have any storage limitations over and above the standard limitations of "pure" BD and HD-DVD discs. In other words, a single THD disc with a 30 GB HD-DVD side and a 50 GB Blu-Ray side is perfectly feasible.

The culmination of the press event featured a live demo of a prototype THD version of "Superman Returns" which is already one of the top-selling titles on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. The Warner executive placed his THD disc into a Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player, played a clip (the ubiquitous "plane lands in baseball field" scene, which was so popular at CES), then took the disc out, flipped it over and popped it into a Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc player and played the same scene. And to further emphasize his point, he inserted the disc into LG's new hybrid BD/HD-DVD player and played the scene there too, with not a hiccup or a glitch.

In addition to studio support, retail chains such as Circuit City and Best Buy are enthusiastic about the new format, because it means half as many SKUs (items) on the sales floor, and less risk for potential high definition software and hardware buyers. Consumers can start building their HD movie collection now, knowing it will continue to hold its value... at least until the "next big thing."

And anything that can help bring high quality movies home to consumers in high definition formats is a good thing in our book. Kudos to Warner for leading the charge to put HD in the hands of more people.

On June 5th Warner Bros. will release "Blood Diamond" on Blu-ray. It will contain the same extras as the already released two DVD version.

HD-DVD fans will have to wait until July 2nd to get their HD version of the movie. For their patience they will be rewarded with HD-DVD only features like the In-Movie Experience (IME), an exclusive interactive feature that allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material while the movie is running. "Blood Diamond" will also be the first HD DVD to include web-enabled extras which allows viewers to use their players to offer opinions in WHV´s online polls and to view other exciting special features such as maps of conflict pertaining to war-torn areas in Africa.
