Closer (Blu-Ray) • Sony • 2004 • 104 min • R • Director: Mike Nichols
50GB/AVC/PCM ![]() The original DVD release of "Closer" was a Superbit release, something that's taken a back seat now that Blu-Ray and HD DVD are on the scene. I broke out my old copy of the movie and watched some selected scenes and then popped this Blu-Ray into the player. Wow. The 1.85:1 MPEG-4 HD image is so much better than the Superbit release I don't even know where to start. Gone are the little artifacts that plagued the earlier release, colors seem more stable and solid and contrast is much improved as well. I don't know if the old disc was that bad or this new one is just that good, suffice it to say I really don't care. This is a much-improved look for the film and I love the way it looks. http://www.avsforum....& "The link provided here does NOT say the player will be $299, FYI. This is a misinterpretation. What it does say is that with the Phillips HD player (a BD player BTW) with a list price of $599, and Toshiba HD-DVD with a list price of $499, they estimate the price where they would have the market advantage to be $299. So as MSRP's drop, the market advantage price point drops. The can also sell below the advantage point. Also, I think people are also misinterpreting what is being said when the translator returns "machine core". This is not a bare drive. This is a complete player. Calling it a "machine core" is a flaw in the online translators. Toshiba's $499 device is also a "machine core". We all know that was the old price for the A2 (or the currenct MSRP for the A20). Based on that, I think it means Wal-Mart is paying $50 for a complete, assembled player. I would expect them to street here closer to $199 than $299." » Klicka här för att visa spoiler - Klicka en gång till för att dölja den... «

http://www.avsforum....& To make regular CE customers migrate from SD to HD, the first HD format that brings HD players to marked that can compete with SD players in price will be the preferred HD format. The announcement in this thread seems to be the starting shot for this. When people goes shopping for a SD DVD player upgrade to go with their new “widescreen” TV and leave the shop with a player that can play HD DVD as a bonus, without having paid much more than they intended when they entered the shop, the needed migration from SD to HD has started. The same way the migration from VHS to DVD started in earnest with cheap Chinese players placed between groceries in the supermarkets. Without this, HD disc media will continue to be a “remark” on the DVD sales statistics. HD DVD has the best possibility to achieve this because of the less expensive production price of the player platform. Also the cheaper price on investment in HD DVD disc reproduction tempt smaller producers to invest in the format, as seen by the recent statements from spokespersons for the replication industry, that advise their members to invest in HD DVD rather than BD. We can now understand the reason for Toshiba being the only producer of HD DVD players, which has been much criticized. By developing and Beta testing the HD DVD platform Inhouse, they have been able to more practically testing the format without coordinating the development with many producers. That has also saved CE producers from initial investments of an unproven format. Now they can produce from a “Ready made” and tested platform. This is of course a great incentive. Industrial politics also comes into play. All producers of DVD related products that want to partake in the future has related to the DVD Forum for a long time and has their relations there. For them to start to relate to the competing and more closed BDA, which means in all practical purpose Sony, might be a deterrent. The format “war” looks more and more like the Betamax Many think that outcome was decided by the involvement of porn. Porn might have had a part in it. The real reason was that Sony had such strict licensing politics on production of Betamax players that other CE producer saw the possibility to investment and involvement not very tempting. Sony basically wanted to produce all players themselves. JVC on the other hand, with their inferior VHS format, was willing to license the technology to other CE producers for a fair price, and by that enabled the CE industry to partake and support VHS. Much the same happens now with HD DVD vs. BD, except that HD DVD is not an inferior format when we measure it by performance, which are picture and sound quality and not a numbers game. Sony as the driving force behind BD seems to repeate itself and has not fully learnt their lesson of history by wanting dominance, and supporting involvement by the big players and making the small player uncertain if they could have a future in HD disc media. Two different strategies. Looks like the DVD Forum strategy, involving the smaller companies will be the winner. Don’t scoff too much of the Chinese HD DVD players. 70% of the DVD players in peoples homes are wholly or partly Chinese built. If we include DVD players in Chinese homes the number is 90%. Average A/V enthusiast will of course buy mid and high end players from known brands like A20&XA from Toshiba, and from Meridan, Onkyo, Denon etc. as they always have done.

Från samma artikel "Ken Graffeo, Universal executive VP of marketing and head of high-definition, said that until the fourth quarter, Blu-ray is likely to continue its sales lead, though HD DVD will still to grow. Consumer electronic sales are slow outside of the holiday season, and the summer’s blockbuster sequels will reach disc then, helping to drive new sales. “Fourth quarter is really going to be a telling time,” he said. HD DVD backers are betting that price will continue to drive the format’s adoption. Later in the year, Chinese manufacturers are poised to begin selling relatively inexpensive HD DVD players in the U.S. “It comes down to bringing it to the general audience at a price that they’re willing to pay,” Graffeo said. HD DVD players have gotten a sales boost since Toshiba lowered the price on its bottom line player to $399 on April 1. New milestones Backers of both formats hit new milestones in the last couple weeks. HD DVD backers said consumers have bought 100,000 set-top players since the format’s launch last April."

The Wal-Mart $299 HD DVD player on the way
"Get ready to get your cheap HD on kids. Wal-Mart just threw down some serious green for a batch of Chinese-made HD DVD players. Just as they brought DVD players down to near-disposable status, their deal for 2 million HD DVD players produced by China's Great Wall corporation will ultimately do the same for hi-def optical. The guts are developed by Taiwan's Fuh Yuan with a touch of help from Japan's TDK. How much? A magical $299, that's how much -- $100 less than the cheapest available HD DVD rig (Toshiba's A2) and half of Sony's $600 BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc player. It's not clear when we'll see the first units on Wal-Mart shelves, only that the final shipment from the order is expected before 2008 is over." ![]() *Föresten är inte TDK med i BDA?? Now Samsung takes both sides in High Definition war
"Having had some of its High Definition (HD) thunder stolen by rival Korean manufacturer LG, who have introduced a dual HD (Blu-ray and HD DVD) player in the UK, Samsung have announced a combined Blu-ray/HD DVD player themselves. Samsung have indicated that their new player the BD-UP5000 will be in stores for Christmas and will be more accomplished than the LG by supporting interactive features of both HD formats rather than just Blu-ray. Industry insiders see the planned introduction of the BD-UP5000 as a boost for the HD DVD format which has begun to loose ground to its Blu-ray rival in terms of sales. Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment believes that the fact that Samsung which for so long has been an exclusive Blu-ray supporter, is going the dual-format route "is an acknowledgment of the tremendous value that HD DVD brings to the early adopter of high definition-packaged media". Samsung have given no indication of price or exactly when the new player will be available, but expect a pre Christmas launch."
