FU Yuan has a really big problem right now... that is the fact that they do not pay licensing fees on their DVD Players. "So what?" right? Well, what this means is that Philips can essentially shut them down, in a manner of speaking. The HD DVD spec itself requires DVD backward compatability, so the DVD logo needs to be on those players (it's built INTO the HD DVD logo afterall). So it can't be an HD DVD player without DVD support. But in order to get in the good books of the DVD-Forum again, they need to solve their licensing fees problems, which (considering this is Philips, and Philips is heavily Blu-Ray) will probably involve paying 100% of their backdated licensing fees and appropriate penalties for all of the DVD players they've sold without them (which is probably all the DVD players they've manufactured I would guess). Although Philips could play it other ways if they choose to, the ball is 100% in their court, and they're holding all the cards (and isn't that the worst mixed metaphore you've ever seen?). One possible option would be for them to cut a deal with Philips for cheap Blu-Ray players, but really it's up to Philips.

Another very possible option is that these players are actually dual format. This was a theory I had when I looked at the whole "Blue HD DVD" translation issue, but it's been put forward to me from another source though my contact. Still it's only a theory, and not based on inside info... but with TDK's involvement, it would make a *LOT* more sense. If these are dual format players, then it would also potentially solve the licensing issues... or at least it would be a reason for Philips to not just shut the whole thing down.

One thing alone is certain at this point. Whatever is happening, there is a HUGE chunk of political crap happening behind the scenes. It will be a battle one way or the other for these players to see the light of day. Speaking as someone who only just today was on the receiving end of a Philips letter giving lists of companies that we should not do business with unless we wanted to get sued, I can say you do NOT want to piss off Philips!!

Wal-Mart orders 2 million HD DVD players

"APRIL 20 | Wal-Mart apparently has ordered 2 million HD DVD players from China to sell at a target price of $299, according to a report out of Taiwan.

The introduction of low-priced Chinese-manufactured DVD players in Wal-Mart and other outlets in the U.S. helped spur the growth of the DVD format in its early years.

"April 20, 2007 - In breaking news today, it would appear that mega-retailer WalMart has contracted a Chinese manufacturer to produce millions of low-cost HD-DVD players. Though somewhat obfuscated by translation issues and the breaking nature of the news, the current internet consensus suggests that Taiwan based manufacturer Fuh Yuan, in cooperation with TDK, will produce the blue laser drives for 2-million HD-DVD players. Broadcom will reportedly supply the system-on-a-chip decoder, and China Great Wall will handle final assembly. The deal represents around US $100,000,000, and it is reported that a new manufacturing plant has already been opened to fulfill the order.

Speculation suggests the players will arrive at retail in late 2007 and will be priced between $199-299. At such cost, WalMart's HD-DVD drives will be far below the current low of $399 for Toshiba's HD-A20 player, and will look cheap compared to the lowest priced Blu-ray hardware on the market today ($599).

If the current details of the plan prove to be true, WalMart's support of HD-DVD will have a significant impact on the next-gen DVD format war. The American retailer operates on a high-volume, low-margin business plan of market saturation, which is exactly the approach required to drive one format or the other to preeminence.

Wal-mart to sell cheap Fuh Yuan made HD DVD Players

"Potentially big news is rolling in from China that could make an impact on the ongoing high definition disc format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Wal-mart has supposedly ordered 2 million HD DVD player from Taiwanese OEM Fuh Yuan. These players are supposed to be priced under $300.

AVSForum has a heated discussion on this news since a couple of days. The information is still sketchy on the whole story. TDK is supposed to be involved as well. TDK has been active though in the Blu-ray camp. One comment in the discussion says even maybe we the news is just about upconverting DVD players with HDMI. This story could just vaporize as I write.

I stumbled over the story on AkihabaraNews, who revised their story that the players would be Blu-ray, which is I think wrong. Here is another Chinese source for the same story that says HD DVD clearly.

2 million units is a boat load and if Wal-mart would succeed in selling them it would mean for the Blu-ray camp to counter with a similar deal.

At some point it will have to happen that the low-cost DVD player makers get into the HD business. The question is when. "

$50 HD-DVD players, Walmart goes low

Breaking news: Taiwanese concern Fuh Yuan reportedly will make 2,000,000 HD-DVD players for retailing giant Wal-Mart. The Chinese site is saying (if you do the math) the retailer will buy these HD-DVD players for $50 each.

We know Wal-Mart has been hocking HD-DVDs for some time now and perhaps this is part of their plan to get the stock out the door. A low cost player surely could help HD combat Blu-Ray.

Another link from the AVS Forum says the price could be $299. I think this estimate is going to be high. I’d expect to see it on the shelf in the $199-$250 range. If the price is that low, this could be the tipping point in the public adopting HD-DVD…

What a riot.

You can see from this thead that there are people here who you can easily write off the list of logical posters.

The article clearly states that whatever format they are talking about offers easy replication with DVD equipment. Blu-ray in no way shape or form offers any replication benefits for DVD. Thus you can pretty much ignore anyone that says otherwise.

This is a HD DVD player. Blu-ray *!!!!!*s like Bailan, Glocks out and apocknight are desperate to insert FUD to their "rapidly fading format of choice"

Most of HD DVD fans have always said it's about price and quality which HD DVD has over Blu-ray and if/when this article is truly confirmed it'll point to Walmart seeing the same

Blu-ray to grow exponentially over next 6-9 months

With Sony's Playstation 3 successfully introduced into the European market, the BDA believes that all the main cornerstones are in place, and the next 6-9 months will see an exponential growth in Blu-ray adoption.

Frank Simonis, Chairman of the BDA’s
European Promotions Committee, said that, “PS3 is a real catalyst for the BD format in Europe too, with almost 800,000 units
sold already, and block buster movies are key."

Though it's too early to present an accurate picture of sales trends in Europe, Simonis believes that Blu-ray will eclipse HD DVD "very soon".

He also said that he expected many independent studios and distributors to adopt Blu-ray from the autumn.

A friend of mine works at Magnolia and told me that these reps came in and told him that they are all coming out with bluray players, not hybrids, in July. The Elite will be a second gen model, and Denon and Marantz will be straight up bluray players. Surprisingly, the Denon would be about $1k he heard from the rep.

April 9, 2007 TOKYO, Japan (AP) Toshiba Corp. has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission and sued 17 companies, alleging infringement of its DVD patents, the Japanese electronics maker said Monday. The commission is an independent federal agency that checks on unfair trade practices and copyright infringements.

Toshiba filed a complaint Friday to the commission against the 17 companies, mostly Hong Kong and Chinese manufacturers and importers.

Also Friday, Toshiba filed a lawsuit demanding monetary damages to the same companies in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Toshiba spokeswoman Yuko Sugahara declined to comment on the damage amount.

Toshiba licenses DVD patents, but the companies, including Daewoo Electronics America Inc. of the U.S., Dongguan GVG Digital Technology of China and Star Light Electronics Co. of Hong Kong, don't have such licensing agreements, Toshiba said. Imported DVD products are sold without proper permission, the company said.

"The infringement of Toshiba's patents by these companies has damaged Toshiba's DVD-related business, and also caused damage to the legitimate and licensed DVD product manufacturing and distribution and business as a whole," Tokyo-based Toshiba said in a statement.

Well information has been leaking out about what exactly Fuh Yuan is making and apparently it is one of the components that will be used in the cheap Chinese HD DVD player that Microsoft and Broadcom have been working on. A poster whose first language is Chinese said that of the 2 million HD DVD players ordered by Wal-Mart all will be shipped by the end of next year. From what Kosty has heard the loader is by Fuh Yuan, the laser head by TDK, and the SoC decoder chip by Broadcom. He also says that mass production will begin in August with initial delivery beginning in 2007.

I am getting some specific information now from industry folks confirming some things to me.

TDK is supplying the laser head (Toshiba) and Fuhyaun is making the loader.

The SoC decoder chip is coming from Broadcom.

Mass production is starting in August. (edit) Initial delivery dates will be in 2007.

Walmart has surveyed and qualified the China Great Wall manufacturing facility as a part of their review process.
