Hollywood condiers changes in DRM to allow managed copying.

"Looks like the movie industry is reconsidering the current DRM and "managed copying" for private use.  Dan Glickman, head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), said that he would like to see copying for private use for HD DVD as well as standard DVDs by the end of the year.  This would allow backups for hard drives as well as Apple TV.  No one involved with this decision seems to be backing down on DRM, long viewed with disdain by many consumers, but they do recognize that the current system is just not working and as more devices come to the market capable of playing diverse media content, they are seeking options to allow legitimate consumers a more hassle-free experience."

Bill Hunt kommenterar Wal-Mart härvan(vad säger du Rob Enderle, kanske skulle väntat lite med artikeln om hur HD DVD är vinnaren?)

In high-definition news, some of you may recall how a few days ago, much ado was made of a supposed leak on AVS Forum that Wal-Mart, TDK and the Chinese manufacturer Fuh Yuan were working to bring 2 million $199 HD-DVD players to Wal-Mart stores later this year. The news, despite being unofficial and unconfirmed by any of the parties involved, spread widely and led to editorials around the Net on how Wal-Mart has decided the format war (click here for a typical example). Unfortunately, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart had this to say to PC Magazine yesterday: "The article... was full of inaccuracies and we had no participation in it. Most of the facts, including the purchase, were untrue. Not sure how it originated." Fuh Yuan has also issued this statement on their website: "We are sorry to correct the statement that we have two million HD-DVD players order from Wal-Mart and manufactured by China Great Wall Group. The actuality is that we had not received yet. We are asked to provide the schedule to Wal-Mart and cost to determine the quantity even more than two million, if the cost is good enough and timing is correct. So the capacity is under consideration. Any qualified manufactured base group will be welcome."

It's no surprise that Wal-Mart is investigating making available in their stores the cheapest players possible, whether they be HD-DVD or Blu-ray. Driving prices in their stories down as low as possible is what they do. But here's the problem with cheap Chinese HD-DVD players that a lot of people are glossing over. The kind of people who might buy a $199 HD-DVD player at Wal-Mart are not the kind of people who are likely to want to have to deal with software glitches, firmware updates and disc/player incompatibility problems. Right now, Toshiba and Universal can't yet tell me why the HD-DVDs of The Good Shepherd and Children of Men aren't working in Toshiba's top of the line player. If Toshiba is having issues with their BEST player, does anyone really think a $199 Fuh Yuan player won't have even MORE problems? Who's going to do tech support for Fuh Yuan? Wal-Mart? One would also expect the kind of people who want a $199 high-def player are also going to be the kind of folks who might also want Disney movies for their kids. That's not going to happen on HD-DVD. Not to mention, with cheap Chinese players available at $199, what other major hardware manufacturer is going to want to try to compete with that? There's no profit margin. LG and Samsung are making combo HD-DVD/Blu-ray Disc players available because they rightly perceive that there's a market for such players with high-end enthusiasts. But those players are going to cost in excess of $1000. There's no incentive at all for companies like LG or Samsung to try and compete with the likes of Fuh Yuan on budget players at Wal-Mart. Meanwhile, the prospect of $199 HD-DVD players will force Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic and the other major Blu-ray Disc player manufacturers to lower their prices faster (which, as Home Media editor T.K. Arnold pointed out in a recent editorial, may be an unexpected advantage of the HD format war). By the end of the year, a number of name-brand Blu-ray players will be available for $399 or less, with even cheaper models likely to follow in 2008. Cheaper players that WILL play those Disney high-def movies.

Toshiba Posts Higher Annual Sales, Income

TWICE, 4/27/2007

Tokyo — Toshiba reported consolidated net sales and consolidated operating income had double-digit increases for its fiscal year, ended March 31.

Consolidated sales were $60.2 billion for the year, a 12 percent increase, while consolidated operating income rose to $2.19 billion, a 17.8 percent gain. Net income for the year was also up dramatically to $1.16 billion, a 76 percent gain that included an increase for sales of securities in affiliated companies.

In digital products, net sales increased 11 percent to $23.8 billion with an operating income of $133.8 million, 24 percent lower than the previous year. PC sales were up due to overseas sales growth, and Digital Media Network business reported higher sales of TV and portable digital music players, Toshiba said.

In the fourth quarter, ended March 31, consolidated net sales were $18.3 billion, up 16 percent, while consolidated income was $1.16 billion, up 9 percent.

"In its launch, Onkyo also expanded its $1,000+ A/V receiver selection by adding two price points long absent from its Onkyo-brand models: a suggested $1,699 and $2,099. They help fill the gap between the $1,099-suggested print point and a $5,000 modular A/V receiver, said Paul Wasek, national marketing manager for Onkyo USA’s Onkyo and Integra brands. The $1,000-plus market “is certainly a growth area overall,” he said. “It is of even greater interest since the Onkyo brand hasn't addressed this price band in quite a while. We believe these two new advanced AVRs are well-positioned to make a serious impact.”

In other product developments, Onkyo USA unveiled one new Onkyo-brand DVD player and three Onkyo-brand HTiBs, said it is reevaluating its Onkyo-brand DVD strategy, and is on track to offer its first HD DVD player later this year. It will carry the Onkyo brand name."

At CES 2007, it had announced its intent to introduce an HD DVD model, but Haas said that the company is “looking at both [the HD DVD and Blu-ray] formats” currently, and deciding whether to field either a standalone player (HD-DVD) or a multiple-format model(Dvs hybrid). He added that a market entry could surface “probably closer to the fourth quarter.”

April 25, 2007 - The recent pres-release-bickering between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps isn't terribly new, though most previous spats have gone down in the midst of large trade shows. The most recent squabbling began when HD-DVD celebrated the format's birthday by announcing that 100,000 dedicated players had been sold, preserving the format's hardware lead, not counting the PlayStation 3 (story). Blu-ray fired back, announcing that Blu-ray movie sales had reached the 1,000,000-sold milestone, and added a little salt to the wound with the data that 70-percent of Q1 HD-movie sales were thanks to Blu-ray (story).

Today, HD-DVD's representatives from Webersh & Wick public relations wrote to IGN Gear directly with updated HD-DVD news. According to their figures, HD-DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold. The firm points out that pre-orders of Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy will propel HD-DVD over the million-mark quite shortly. Representatives also stated that hardware sales have continued with strength in April, maintaining a 4 to 1 margin over Blu-ray.

Though consumers would likely benefit to a resolution to this format war sooner rather than later, it's looking like the struggle may continue for quite some time. The upshot of it all, however, will be a long and amusing PR battle. Honestly, it's rare in technology to get this much back-and-forth in claims, counter claims, dueling sales statistics, and one sided announcements of victory, so kick back and enjoy it, maybe while rocking some undeniably pretty 1080p movies on the format of your choice.

"The first tool of its kind formally documented in cooperation with SMPTE, Film Grain Technology was selected by DVD Forum for mandatory inclusion in HD DVD™ products. The technology allows compressed motion pictures to be delivered more efficiently and improves their visual quality. It enables film grain that is extracted before content is compressed to be faithfully re-created during playback. Film Grain Technology is a streamlined, low-cost solution that is easily embedded in broadcast and home theater play-out devices. Broadcasters maximize bandwidth; packaged media content creators gain disk space; and viewers see movies that match the filmmaker’s intent. Film Grain Technology is easily deployed with H.264 compression (also known as MPEG-4 Part 10/Advanced Video Coding), and can be adapted to support other compression solutions, as well."

Toshiba plans to sell 3 million HD-DVD players this fiscal year

By Hiroyuki Kachi
Last Update: 9:37 PM ET Apr 25, 2007

Toshiba's sales target reflects fiercer with the rival camp, led by Sony Corp. (6758.TO), whose DVD players and recorders operate on the Blu-ray Disc standard.
A Toshiba spokeswoman said Thursday the company hopes to reach the target through efforts to expand into new markets, cut prices and introduce more software titles. Toshiba started shipping HD DVD players in Japan March 31 last year and later in the U.S. and Europe.
The spokeswoman said the company began selling its players in Brazil earlier this month. The products will go on sale in Russia in May, and Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia later this year.

It also said that sale of HD DVD consumer electronics hardware, not including the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, continues to outsell dedicated Blu-ray hardware, excluding PlayStation 3. Buyers of dedicated hardware, it argues, are much more likely to subsequently buy discs than people who have a drive as an extension to a games console.

It added that with more HD DVD titles becoming available and with hardware prices falling 'we're seeing more equal week-to-week movie sales ratios between the formats'.

'Why are we just focusing on dedicated players? So we can compare stats on similar hardware with similar attach rates,' the statement says. 'That's a key driver of software sales and shows that price is clearly a factor for consumers in deciding to buy dedicated high definition hardware.'

Ultimate Avengers Collection (Blu-ray)

BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc

1080p/MPEG-2

There are some big problems though :( . For starters, both films are plagued by severe color banding -- dark skies look like patterned quilts, underwater expanses resemble stair cases, and vast white areas Lego their way into grays. For a perfect example of this, take a look at the battle between the Avengers and the Hulk at the end of the first film. On top of the color banding, thinner hand drawn lines at the edges of key frame animations are often pixilated, there's a slight motion blur to movement, and an occasional screen door effect occurs at random intervals. Unfortunately, these problems are very noticeable and often hinder everything that looks great about the colorful presentation.

When will there be other HD-DVD players (other than the Toshiba ones) released in the UK?

I can’t say. But we have one of the top home brands there, Meridian, working on an HD DVD player. You might have to sell your house to afford one . But it will come. Hopefully there will be other lower cost players. For now, Samsung dual-format player might also be a good option when it does get released later this year. As will LG if they fix the HD DVD interactivity.

Han nämner Meridian men inte Onkyo? :(

Onkyo AVRs Add 1080p Upscaling, HD DVD, BD Surround Decoding

TWICE, 4/24/2007

In its launch, Onkyo also expanded its $1,000+ A/V receiver selection by adding two price points long absent from its Onkyo-brand models: a suggested $1,699 and $2,099.

Onkyo USA’s current Integra-brand lineup, targeted to the custom-install market, already offers A/V receivers above and below $1,000. New Integra brand products will debut later in the year.

In other product developments, Onkyo USA unveiled one new Onkyo-brand DVD player and three Onkyo-brand HTiBs, said it is reevaluating its Onkyo-brand DVD strategy, and is on track to offer its first HD DVD player later this year. It will carry the Onkyo brand name.

By Amir:

They are nicely separated into four categories. Chinese will focus on competent playback of the format, ranking a clear step below Toshiba in overall consumer proposition. Onkyo will strive to build the next step up from Toshiba. Meridian will take this up quite a few notches higher yet, with price no object execution as they have done with their current products. So when it is all said and done, we will have a very nice range for HD DVD products for everyone from budget conscious to someone who wants to know they have bought the best – period.
