In another Pirates of the Caribbean related update, BVHE have informed us that both titles are now due out a couple of weeks later than originally planned, moving from 21st May to 4th June 2007. All other details remain the same and can be found here.

Another Blu-ray Disc date-slip comes in the form of Sony's US release of Wild Things, originally slated for 3rd July it's now coming on 17th July. Details here.

We’ve added tech specs and full 1080P resolution menu screens from the forthcoming UK Blu-ray Disc release of the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies which you can view here. Both are due out later this month to coincide with the theatrical debut of the third in the franchise.

In other HD news today, Universal have bumped The Big Lebowski from its original release date on 29th May to the end of June where it joins their 2nd wave of titles for that month and will arrive on the 26th. Full details on the June wave of releases can be found here.

Also now scheduled for the 26th June is Universal’s HD DVD Combo release of Dead Silence, a new horror from the makers of Saw which was originally scheduled for 10th July. This change also affects the DVD release.

And finally, back to Blu-ray Disc, Sony have removed Meatballs from the schedule where it was originally slated to debut alongside the Special Edition DVD release on 5th June. No reason has been given, though it’s likely to reappear at a later date.

Transcript: Disney CEO Iger Talks Up Blu-ray in Analyst Call

While he was recently quoted as suggesting that his company might support both Blu-ray and HD DVD, Disney CEO Robert Iger appears to have reversed his earlier position, making a new more unequivocal statement of support for Blu-ray this week.

Back in March, Iger seemed to signal that his Blu-ray exclusive studio was considering joining Warner and Paramount in the format neutral camp, telling investors at Disney's annual meeting with shareholders that his company was "excited about next generation DVD formats" and that while it had chosen Blu-ray because it thought it was superior to HD DVD, that Disney would eventually "probably publish in both formats."

This week, however, Iger made a much more firm statement of his company's exclusive support of Blu-ray during Disney's quarterly analyst call, saying "the single greatest thing we can do right now is to not waffle, but to be very, very blunt about it, to continue our support of Blu-ray because we sense a real advantage."

A complete transcript of Iger's Blu-ray comments made during this week's analyst call follows:

"We made our bed with Blu-ray because we believed more in that format for a variety of reasons; some technical in nature, some due to the fact that it simply had broader support from a variety of industries, notably the motion picture studios but also what I’ll call the consumer electronics and the tech industry.

What we are seeing lately is that sales of Blu-ray discs are outpacing HD discs by at least two to one. As more quality Blu-ray product comes on the market, which is going to happen, notably with Pirates on May 22, we actually believe that the difference or the advantage of Blu-ray is only going to widen.

What we are also seeing is that the adoption of the platform right now is being held back a bit by a perception among consumers, really, that there is a format war; and that the hardware or the players are too expensive. We see the players coming down in price nicely, particularly by the Christmas season. We also believe that if Blu-ray continues to outpace HD DVD the retailers are ultimately going to weigh in, because they only have a limited amount of shelf space, and they are going to have to choose a format in order to manage their own shelf space. Once that happens, the advantage is going to go even more in Blu-ray’s direction.

I think the single greatest thing we can do right now is to not waffle, but to be very, very blunt about it, to continue our support of Blu-ray because we sense a real advantage. The best thing that could happen is for the format war to end, which will be very pro-consumer, particularly as hardware comes down.

The other thing I want to note is, if you look across the globe, the only place there is really a format war is in the United States. In other markets where next-gen DVD is starting to penetrate, Blu-ray is winning, and substantially; so much so there isn’t even a perceived format war.

So I think we made the right decision, the trends we are seeing seem to validate the decision. We think long-term, this is going to be a nice growth area for the company, because as you know sell-through DVD is a big business for the Walt Disney Company, even though we believe in things like VOD and the rental model. People want to own a Disney DVD, particularly in the next-generation format."

Amir erbjuder darin $7500 för att darin ska sluta pressa honom med "obekväma" frågor (OBS, gammalt som gatan, bara så någon slipper påepeka det...)

In a rather shocking turn of events (at least for a web forum)  Amir Majidimehr , a corporate VP at Microsoft offered to pay 7500$ or send his Sony Ruby projector (VW-100) to a detractor of his on the home theater discussion website AVSforum.com. This came after the user offered to bet 7500$ on the issue of Amir's constant claims that HD DVD's were visually transparent to the original D5 master tape. The user has also implied Amir has been intentionally misleading people about the HD DVD format, and the VC-1 codec.

BDA: "No current player will ever support IME"!!!!!

Based on recent coverage, there appears to be some confusion about the implementation of BD-Java on Blu-ray Disc.

All Blu-ray Disc players must support BD-Java (BD-J) and every one shipped to date does. The confusion surrounds an announcement by the [Blu-ray Disc Association] setting an Oct. 31 deadline for implementation of several secondary features. The deadline applies to:

– Secondary video, also known as picture-in-picture (PiP).
– Secondary audio.
– Persistent memory storage (a minimum of 256MB, 1GB for players with an Internet connection).

Of these, the PiP requirement is receiving the most attention. The PiP feature is a specific hardware function that must be built into a player, and BD-Java is simply used to operate this feature if it's present. No player shipped to date supports PiP at this time, although it's always possible that a given model has been designed to switch it on later (no company has announced this yet as far as I know).

My point is that it's important to separate picture-in-picture and the other items listed above from BD-Java. BD-Java is one of two interactive modes that can be used on a Blu-ray Disc (the other being "HDMV" or high definition movie mode, which is similar to DVD navigational structures). All BD players must support both environments.

If a studio offers a PiP function or other features that require the persistent memory or the ability to playback secondary video or audio streams on future BD titles, current players will not support those specific features. However, movie playback, as well as other interactive features not using these functions would be unaffected and should work as they normally would."

Jupp, tyvärr är det väldigt många som inte inser detta. Vad många också inte inser är att funktionen är fördröjd då det inte gick att kirra HD PiP när HD DVD och Blu-ray lanserades, så, stympa hela funktionen och sätta DVD spec på den eller vänta och få funktionen som den först var utänkt att bli?
Mjo, finns väldigt många åsikter om det, den ena är dock extremt kortsiktig medans den andra sträcker sig betydligt längre och bättre i framtiden

Let me be very clear on this... I was in my local area Myer-Emco and I asked how they thought the format war was going. Keep in mind that Myer-Emco was one of the stops on the HD DVD Road Show and has been displaying HD DVD right alongside Blu-ray since day one, so as a company they lean format neutral.

When asked about what they had seen going on with the format war the answer was quick from three employees: Blu-ray all the way.

Great, go my team.

But, then they hit me with a piece of news that I had never heard before and it kind of shocked me. Apparently, as a fairly major Denon dealer, they had gotten word that Denon is currently developing a Blu-ray player for release before the year is out. I asked for confirmation, but amidst all the other rumors this just amounts to second hand information from a second hand source and is not anything approaching official - so try not to get your panties in a bunch right now.

Just thought it was an interesting tidbit that I had picked up today in my quest for a new center channel.

Jag ser ingen skillnad faktiskt...1.1 o BDlive borde vara med i specsen från början...det är oacceptabelt att BDA fortsätter o släppa "nya" spelare utan de funktionerna för ca 10000-15000:-...men det verkar som att det är helt ok med dig ...varför köper du inte den nya Eliten då?

Skulle vägra köpa en standalone som inte klara alla ljudcodecs till att börja med(mao, det finns varken någon HD DVD eller BD spelare vare sig standalone eller tvspel som klarar mina krav), Samsungs nya ser annars jävligt bra ut.
Men Denons spelare blir nog inte helt dum när den kommer senare i år

Wild Hogs Rides onto Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that on August 14th they will be releasing 'Wild Hogs' on Blu-ray, day-and-date with the DVD release. Starring an all-star cast including Tim Allen and John Travolta, 'Wild Hogs' follows a gang of middle-aged bikers and they make a cross-country trip on their motorcycles. Disney will present the movie in 1080p video accompanied by a PCM 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include a commentary track with director Walt Becker and writer Brad Copeland, as well as deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and outtake reel.

Nip/Tuck Season 4 to Blu-ray

Warner Home Entertainment has announced that the widely acclaimed fourth season of the TV show 'Nip/Tuck' will be released on Blu-ray. Available September 4th, this four disc set will feature all the episodes from season 4 in stunning 1.78:1 high definition and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. Extras include three featurettes, unaired scenes, and a gag reel.

Wal-Mart Upgrades CE Departments

Bentonville, Ark. — Wal-Mart is enhancing its CE departments with improved assortments, signage and in-store support. The chain is rolling out the changes system-wide beginning this week.

Newly added product lines include Skype VoIP service and accessories, Vizio LCD TVs and higher-end HTiBs from Sony and Philips. Wal-Mart will expand its mix of Samsung TVs with more and larger screen size SKUs, is adding 1080p LCD panels in sizes over 40W inches from Philips and Polaroid, and is augmenting its digital imaging offering with SLR models from Canon and Nikon.

Wal-Mart will also drop all analog TVs effective this month, and will provide in-store signage explaining the country’s coming transition to all-digital broadcasts.

The world’s largest retailer said it is worked with suppliers to edit and often expand its TV, camera and PC assortment based on customer preferences, “targeting their needs for obtaining the best price, brand or both.”

All stores will also receive bright new displays highlighting specific products with easy-to-read details, including a new camera bar and modular merchandisers for digital photo frames from Kodak and Polaroid. The display enhancements, which also include new in-store signage and shelf-talkers, come on the heels of a massive CE department remodeling last year.

To prepare for the enhancements, Wal-Mart said its CE department sales associates completed an “aggressive” customer service and product training program this year.

“Consumers are more technology driven today than ever before and are searching for the right price and products to quickly meet their needs,” said Kevin O’Connor, Wal-Mart’s VP and general merchandise manager for consumer electronics. “These changes share our focus to help simplify the buying decision by offering sought-after brands with an easier shopping experience, all at the Wal-Mart price.”

Indeed, the company vowed that “value will continue to be a key driver,” with prices on 32W-inch LCD TVs for example moving below $500.

Product specifics include:

• Skype certified hardware headsets under $15, Web cameras under $25, handsets under $30 and the first Skype prepaid cards;

• Vizio’s 26W-inch, 32W-inch, 37W-inch and 42W-inch LCD TVs.

Additional SKUs will be available online only, but can be shipped for pick-up to an expanding number of Wal-Mart stores under the company’s “site to store” service.

O’Connor also indicated that “all future electronics products ordered for our stores” will have to be compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), which limits the use of lead, cadmium, mercury and other environmentally hazardous substances.

Commenting on the CE upgrades, Wal-Mart’s marketing senior director Greg Hall said, “Our improvements to the in-store experience launching this week reflect our customer’s need to have the electronics shopping decision simplified. For our customer, that means quality brands at low Wal-Mart prices in an easier shopping environment. This effort represents a key step in educating shoppers about new cutting edge products, while creating an exciting store within a store experience.”

Came back from the mostly 2 channel audio Home Entertainment Show in NYC this weekend.

Meet several people with significant contacts in the Chinese mainland electronics assembly industry.

At least three people had directly heard from their Chinese counterparts about Fuh Yuan and Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart asking for bids of over 2 million HD DVD players. Three others said they had looked into the deal and had convinced themselves that Fuh Yuan is preparing to manufacture HD DVD players

One well known company of high quality speakers with US components assembled in China claimed that his sources have also said that the deal is on track with the only holdup possibly being the Broadcom decoder deliveries. Seemed to be very confident of his sources. All half dozen or so people that claimed knowledge seemed to be in sync with what I have heard about the deal being on track.

I can't claim for their veracity, but it seemed that everyone was optimistic about the deal. Heard absolutely no naysayers including the the people with Mainland Chinese or Taiwanese connections.

On the other hand, some of the A/V tech magazine people I talked to said they had heard noting about the deal.

None of my other sources have said anything new to me about the deal except that it seems to be ongoing, nothing has changed and that all parties concerned are pleased its gone more to the back burner.

By the way, if you think people are emotional about the format war, dive into the world of high performance 2 channel analog/digital audio for a while. There is a significant amount of brainpower that argues nuances there.

Now thats scary to me. Some of those guys are intense.
