Everything came up 'Planet Earth' on this week's next-gen sales chart, with the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions of the acclaimed BBC nature documentary commanding the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
Though the Blu-ray format still enjoyed the overall lead in market share for the week ending May 6 (60 percent versus HD DVD's 40 percent), the HD DVD version of 'Planet Earth' edged out its Blu rival to snag the pole position on the Nielsen chart.

Warner Home Video has announced that the racy doctors of 'Nip/Tuck' will hit high-def for the first time this September, with a simultaneous DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray release of the show's fourth go-round.
Due on September 4, 'Nip/Tuck: The Complete Fourth Season' is the latest for the acclaimed F/X series, which continues to be one of cable's most controversial -- and popular -- original series.

"Disney considering HD DVD support, sees Blu-ray as eventual winner
By Ken Fisher | Published: March 13, 2006 - 06:43PM CT
With the ground war phase of the next-generation optical format tussle only weeks away, you might think that the battle lines are clearly drawn. Strangely enough, they're not. Before the real battles have even begun, a long-time studio Blu-ray backer is considering embracing HD DVD—a first for a format that has seen its own supporters largely slide to the competition.
The "who's who" of studios is a confusing morass when it comes to next-generation support, but it hasn't always been this way. In the early days of the brewing conflict there were three positions to take: HD DVD, Blu-ray, or "wait and see." The big studios originally lined up behind either HD DVD or Blu-ray, while a few notable giants such as Twentieth Century Fox waited a little longer to see how things would shake out.
Over the course of the last year things have become more complex as studios seemed to rethink their commitments to either standard. Original HD DVD supporters Paramount and Warner Bros. both announced last year that they would also support Blu-ray, leaving Universal as the only major studio backing HD DVD alone. On the Blu-ray side of the fence, Sony, Disney, MGM, and others all appeared to be strongly committed to the Blu-ray push. The landscape looked particularly favorable to Blu-ray owing to the fact that practically all major studios have plans for Blu-ray products, while only half have plans for HD DVD. Those looking at studio support alone have given that column's checkmark to Blu-ray.
Now it appears as though a Blu-ray backer may opt for a bit of neutrality as well. During the company's annual meeting with shareholders last week, Disney CEO Robert Iger said that HD DVD support is a real possibility. Saying that "we're very exited about next generation DVD formats," Iger made it clear that Disney has been supporting Blu-ray because they believe it "offers more features and higher quality than the competing format." However, before saying that that company still believes that Blu-ray is going to ultimately prevail, Iger admitted that the company "will probably publish in both formats." That is, Disney will likely release titles in both HD DVD and Blu-ray.
As of yet no formal announcement has been made, and there is a chance that Disney will ultimately not tap HD DVD as a next-generation optical format. Iger's comments, however, indicate a willingness to support both formats and that is perhaps a bit surprising. With HD DVD launching in North America later this month and Blu-ray's launch scheduled for the end of May, now might not seem like the best time to ponder changes in allegiance. Yet with analysts predicting a format war that could last years on account of consumer confusion and mixed studio support, content producers such as Disney may be concerned about limiting their options to one side of the divide. If HD DVD sees a strong launch, more Blu-ray-only studios may ultimately show where their true allegiances lie: making money."

Riding the wave of huge success generated by their first Blu-ray player, the DMP-BD10, Panasonic has announced the availability of an updated version: the DMP-BD10A. Technically, the player is exactly the same as the BD10, featuring an HDMI connection, 7.1 analog outs, and decoding for DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. The big difference comes with the price tag; the SRP has been set at $600US.
Additionally, Panasonic will be packaging in a bundle of five titles which is sure to excite any Blu-ray owner. Purchasers will be treated with 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest', 'Transporter', 'Fantastic 4', and 'Crash'. As some of the hottest titles on Blu-ray, this makes an excellent start to any movie fans collection.
The combination of high quality features, low price (more than half the price of the original only six months ago) and five of the hottest movies on Blu-ray makes this player a must have for anyone looking to get into Blu-ray.

At a premier for the Blu-ray releases of the first two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, Disney announced that they will be bringing the first installment of 'The Chronicles of Narnia' to Blu-ray either late summer or early autumn. A highly anticipated title from the studio, 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' will surely receive the same two disc treatment that the Pirates films have, including special features only found on Blu-ray.
Also revealed by Disney at the event, was that the Pixar film 'Cars' would be delayed to September due to Pixar's high level of participation on the title. Additionally, they announced that no catalog animation titles would be released in 2007 as they wait for hardware penetration to gain a better footing.
Stay tuned for more detail about the release of 'The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe'.

Warner Home Video have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD release of 300 on 31st July 2007. The epic graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) assaults the screen with the blood, thunder and awe of its ferocious visual style faithfully recreated in an intense blend of live-action and CGI animation. Retelling the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his massive Persian army. Experience history at swordpoint. And moviemaking with a cutting edge.
Released on HD DVD Combo (HD30/DVD9, $39.99 SRP) and Blu-ray Disc (BD50, $34.99 SRP) the film is presented in 1080P Widescreen with English, French and Spanish 5.1 Surround (Dolby Digital on Blu-ray Disc, Dolby Digital Plus on HD DVD), English Dolby True HD 5.1 Surround and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. ¨
Extras are TBC, but likely to match the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD release.

For this transfer Disney went with 50GB Blu-ray disc (BD50) and glorious AVC transfer in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio and the average bit rate ranges from 35 to 38 Mbps. In short ladies and gentleman this Pirates movie gives us the new benchmark in picture quality for HD optical. Up until this point, both Crank on Blu-ray and King Kong on HD DVD were the films to beat in HD optical picture quality. I was fortunate enough to watch the new Matrix Collection HD DVD box set yesterday, and not even it rivals this Curse of the Black Pearl disc. At no point in viewing Pirates did I experience any macro blocking or any noise of any type. I could not believe this considering the amount of both bright and dark scenes and also the amount action sequences. Also the film was extremely sharp and clear and free of any film debris and I mean zero debris whatsoever. I have not experienced this as of yet on HD optical until the viewing of this disc. This disc also contained little to no film grain. Colors (and this is a very colorful film) were extremely vibrant and flesh tones were spot-on. This disc is truly an AMAZING benchmark in picture quality.

För att han är näst efter rdjam avsforums största skitsnackare, han har iofs börjat ta det lugnt och lämnat över facklan till Ben ser det ut som. Har du läst "Finally the "perfect" VC-1 vs. AVC shootout -> Flags of our Fathers" tråden?
Sett "Is their an Audible Difference Between DD+ and Dolby TrueHD?" tråden?
Ben röstade på "No difference"
Tror du ärligt han hade röstat på det om låt säga att TrueHD användes på nästan alla HD DVD släpp medans BD skulle haft DD+?
Det är knappast en slump i det här fallet att DD+ är det som används mest på HD DVD.
