HD DVD outshines Blu-ray Disc with a better version of "300"
This week’s home video movie releases will bring with it a disc that will clearly outline the differences in feature sets of HD DVD and B-ray Disc. “300,” released on Tuesday, hits the market on high-definition with unequal releases.
The rights to “300” belong to Warner Home Video – a studio that backs both HD DVD and B-ray Disc – but the studio has graced the HD DVD version with several exclusive features that currently can be found nowhere else.
Found only on the HD DVD version is the "Bluescreen Picture-in-Picture Version" of the film. As “300” was shot almost completely in a bluescreen-laden warehouse in Canada, the raw footage differs greatly from the movie’s final look. Viewers are able to directly compare the before and after shots through a picture-in-picture window that can be dynamically enabled or disabled. Running alongside the pre-processed footage is an exclusive commentary track by director Zack Snyder recorded specifically for the special feature.
The bluescreen supplement is not found on the Blu-ray Disc version of the film, but Warner Home Video’s decision to include it only the HD DVD version is unlikely due to any sort of format favoritism. Current mandatory B-ray Disc player specifications do not include the feature set to allow for picture-in-picture video.
The B-ray Disc Association has mandated that all players of the format released after October 31, 2007 must support BD Java, a programming language for Blu-ray Disc media used mainly to deliver picture-in-picture for in-movie commentary and special features.
The HD DVD equivalent of this enabling feature, called HDi, is already standard on all HD DVD players. Rather than being based on Java, however, HDi is built on Microsoft’s XML standards.
Another feature that points out the feature differences between the two high-definition player specifications is HD DVD’s requirement of being Internet-connectivity ready. Recent firmware updates for HD DVD players, which are obtainable via the web, have enabled “Web Content” features for specific movie titles.
“300” on HD DVD takes advantage of online content by allowing the viewer to browse and purchase movie-related items, such as ringtones and wallpapers, for use on mobile phones – another feature that is exclusive to the movie’s release on the format.
The CGI-filled film isn’t Warner Home Video’s first unequal release on high-definition. The studio released “Blood Diamond” first on Blu-ray Disc, and then weeks later released the HD DVD version with picture-in-picture commentary. The studio is also holding back certain titles from a B-ray Disc release – that are already available on HD DVD – at least until BD-Java becomes mandatory. Such titles include “Batman Begins,” “V for Vendetta” and the “Matrix Trilogy.”
Although it may appear that the current B-ray Disc version of “300” is completely inferior to the HD DVD version, it does feature one additional audio option. The Blu-ray Disc version of the film includes an additional uncompressed audio track that is encoded in Linear PCM 5.1. The extra audio track is likely exclusive to B-ray disc due to the format’s extra 20GB of storage space. The video encodes on both high-definition versions, presented in VC-1, are identical.
“The HD DVD of 300 is clearly the superior version, boasting some exclusive special features such as a picture-in-picture bluescreen version of the film, web-enabled extras and more,” said optical storage analyst Wesley Novack. “The only exclusive feature found on the B-ray Disc version of the release is the uncompressed PCM audio track, which is nearly identical to the TrueHD audio found on the HD DVD release.”
For B-ray Disc player owners who are missing the bluescreen picture-in-picture feature, there may be hope of a second release of “300” following the implementation of BD Java. According to Home Media Magazine, Deborah Snyder, executive producer and wife of director Zack Snyder of the film, at a Comic-Con International panel said that the picture-in-picture feature wasn’t yet ready for B-ray Disc, and added, “I think there’s going to be another Blu-ray special edition later on.”
Another report from the panel recorded Deborah Snyder as saying that a later edition of the movie will also include storyboards and production artwork in addition to the bluescreen footage. The Digital Bits recalled that the producer’s comments sent several Warner representatives in a state of nervousness and shock. Warner Home Video did not comment on whether or not there would be another release of “300” on Blu-ray Disc with additional features.
For owners of players of both high-definition formats, the choice between which to buy today may come down to more than just the special feature bullet-points. Interestingly enough, the B-ray Disc version of “300” retails for several dollars less than the HD DVD version, but it’s not because of its shorter feature list.
As Novack explained, “These exclusive extra features are not the catalyst that caused the slightly higher MSRP on the HD DVD compared to the Blu-ray version. In reality, the higher price is due to the combo disc format, which includes a standard DVD version on the flip-side of the disc. And with a rumor that Warner might be releasing another version of ‘300’ in the future, with interactive features included next time, the HD DVD version looks like the version to jump on at this point in time.”

Ganska svårt val multimedia. Det handlar ju om hur mycket du är beredd att betala och hur länge du kan vänta. Samsungs kombo känns som ett riktigt bra alternativ, men man vet ju inte hur bra den kommer vara. köper du däremot en toshiba e1 idag så har du två spelare, och kan vänta ett par år till det släpps riktigt bra och billiga kombos.
Ja, lite så tänker jag faktiskt också. Givetvis är det så att kombospelarna i slutendan kommer utvecklas, och redan gör det. Sen är det väl detta att det känns lite fånigt att först ha en vanlig DVD som kan spela alla ens regions bundna DVD-filmer (1-6 för min del). Sen en PS3 och till sist då en HD-DVD... Det blir lite väl mycket "vid TV-bänken"...
Ja ja, man får helt enkelt överväga detta, och förhoppningsvis har man snart hittat ett bra alternativ som kan passa en själv.

Ja, vad säger man? Det blir nog till att ha två spelare i bänken. Jag har alltid hög volym på och störs inte av fläktar så kanske en 360 add-on skulle vara ett bra komplement till S1E:n.

Ja, och det vill jag helst undvika (vill helt enkelt inte ha detta!)
Precis som Henke skriver, så är det nog läge för att vänta och se hur prisläget ser ut både för Toshiba spelarna samt kombon från Samsung, senare i höst. Har heller ingen brådska, men med nyheter som denna, så blir man ju lite sugen att även införskaffa den delen som gör att man inte behöver bry sig, utan istället kan lägga all kraft på att köpa filmerna som man vill ha i sin samling.

Så länge BD är så dyrt så blir det inget för mig, finns inte mkt filmer heller "fram tills nu" för min egen del inom BD 5-10 max..en av anledningarna till min HDDVD exklusivitet (lol)

om den kostar 1000 dollar i U.S..
Själv väntar jag och ser vad priset blir i Hong Kong, då jag är där ofta (köpte mitt PS3:där för 3.200:- ink. två spel + extra handkontroll)
Men men, man får helt enkelt se vad som händer här framme i höst. Men att jag innan året slut kommer sitta med båda formaten, tar jag för givet. Retar mig redan i dag att jag inte kan införskaffa Matrix serein på HD...

Just when you thought it was safe to buy a Blu-ray player, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation decide to go exclusively with HD DVD.
Both companies emphasised the lower cost of HD DVD players.
"Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience," Brad Grey, chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. "I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."

Inte för att starta nån pajkastning här inne eller stöta mig så är det ändå intressant och på tiden att Fox annonserar massa nya filmsläpp nu och inser att de inta bara kan rida på PS3 vågen utan facar reality att vi kanske ska börja släppa lite bra titlar också, nu när Paramount gått HDDVD exklusiva

Blades of glory kommer väll ändå ut på båda formaten då de e så kort tid kvar tills release?

The move will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation.

tänka sig och tänka sig.. Man blir väl mer eller mindre tvungen snart om man vill kunna avnjuta alla filmer som man tänkt sig, jäkligt drygt att upptäcka att den senaste HDfilmen som man vill ha inte kommer till "sitt" format, lite därför jag ville att det här rackarns kriget skulle vara över någon gång så att det fanns en standard, men som sagt så pressas ju priserna enormt av det här kriget vilket vi alla vinner på.
om nu inte "kriget" skulle funnits hade vi fått betala 15.000+ för en HDspelare idag, det är jag helt säker på. Men det här borgar väl ännu mer för combospelare antar jag? Hoppas bara Hybridskivorna aldrig blir verklighet.

Sannerligen oväntat och ovälkommet. Som positiv effekt har vi konsumenter dock att vänta upptrissat krig iform bättre erbjudanden både på hårdvaru och mjukvarusidan. Negativ effekt är att vi får dras med två format under en längre tid.
Mest faschinerad över hela den här grejen dock är jag över HD DVD-anhängarna i den här tråden, två personer står för 45% av inläggen.

Visst, detta är stort och mycket otippat och säkert roligt för alla HD-DVD-anhängare. Men nu pratar ju ni som om HD-DVD plötsligt har vunnit kriget? Faktum är trots allt:

Just when it looked like Blu-Ray was getting the best of HD DVD, the latter scores a combination like Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation.
Both companies announced on Monday that they had agreed to release exclusively on the HD DVD format, which is battling with rival Blu Ray to become the high-definition successor to the DVD disc.
The move by Paramount represents a setback for Blu Ray. The studio has supported both formats and the tally of studios exclusively committed to each format stands at 3-2 in favor of Blu-Ray.
Sony, Disney and Fox support Blu-Ray, but the momentum may be swinging back in favor of HD DVD.
Paramount, owned by entertainment juggernaut Viacom, saw some sister companies, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, commit to HD DVD as well.
Paramount and DreamWorks Animation citied lower manufacturing costs of the HD DVD discs and lower prices for its players as reasons why deciding to go with the format.
"I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount," said stated Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, which is currently the leading studio in domestic box office. ".

Det finns väl ingen som sagt att HD DVD har vunnit kriget. Däremot är det här ett jättekliv framåt för HD DVD. Universal kommer garanterat inte bli neutrala nu. Många BD-anhängare kommer nu köpa HD DVD-spelare vilket kommer leda till att HD DVD säljer fler filmer, och BD färre. Kriget kommer pågå till ett bättre format kommer.
