Fox Unveils Specs for 'Hills Have Eyes 2' Blu-ray

Postad bild

Fox Home Entertainment has unleashed all the gory details for its upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Hills Have Eyes 2,' and it looks like fans of the flick won't be disappointed.

As we first reported last week, Fox has set an October 23 release date for the horror sequel. Now the studio has released full supplemental details for the disc, and in what's becoming a very pleasant trend, it includes yet another healthy collection of extras from once-supplement starved studio.

Presented on a BD-25 single-layer disc, among the bloody fun will be three featurettes ("Mutant Attacks," "Birth of a Graphic Novel," and "Exploring the Hills: The Making of The Hills Have Eyes 2"), the "Fox Movie Channel Presents: Life After Film School with Wes Craven" TV special, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, gag reel and theatrical and teaser trailers.

As previously announced, the film will be presented in its unrated form in 1080p/MPEG-2 video, and is set to include a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 surround track.

Fox has priced the Blu-ray at an MSRP of $39.98.

Blu-ray Disc™ titles for Q4 (EUROPE)

SPHE was the first studio to release Blu-ray titles in Europe and SPHE has released a broad selection of Blu-ray Disc titles since the format’s initial launch including Casino Royale and Black Hawk Down. To date SPHE has released more than 40 Blu-ray™ High-Def titles across Europe, with more than 30 titles scheduled for release between now and Christmas in Europe.

SPIDER-MAN 3 & SPIDER-MAN HIGH DEFINITION TRILOGY - from 15 October
The Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy is a three-pack release of all three films on Blu-ray™ High-Def allowing fans an exclusive opportunity to collect both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 in high definition, along with Spider-Man 3 and the branching elements from Spider-Man 2.1 extended cut. Spider-Man 3 will also be available as a stand-alone two-disc release on Blu-ray™ High-Def, with the feature presented on a 50GB dual-layer disc and more than six hours of all-new bonus materials, including a trio of featurettes spotlighting the cinematic creation of the web crawler’s greatest nemeses, on a second 25GB disc. Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, and Topher Grace, Spider-Man 3 smashed box office records and grossed more than $885 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 30th ANNIVERSARY ULTIMATE EDITION – from 12 November
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed classic, will be released on Blu-ray Disc™ from 12 November. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of this motion picture, the set incorporates all three versions of the film, including the first-ever home video release of the 1977 Original Theatrical edition, as well as the re-edited 1980 theatrical Special Edition and Spielberg’s definitive Director’s Cut (released in 1998 as the Collector’s Edition). This marks the first classic Spielberg film ever to be released on a pre-recorded high definition disc format.
The stunning high definition presentation of Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition contains all three cinematic versions on just one 50 GB Blu-ray Disc™, with bonus material included on a second disc. All three versions are included on one disc through a process known as “seamless branching,” made possible with the added interactivity of Blu-ray’s software and the robust processing power of the players. This process identifies the differences between each version of the film and segments the footage accordingly. These segments are then encoded and assembled into three unique playlists, thus allowing footage used in all three films to be included on the Blu-ray Disc™ only once. Based on the viewer’s selection of the Original Version, Special Edition or definitive Director’s Cut, each film will be presented seamlessly in its original form by use of its respective playlist.
Added value materials on the Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30thAnniversary Ultimate Edition high definition Blu-ray Disc™ include an exclusive interview with Spielberg created specifically for this release, all-new “Storyboard-to-Scene Comparisons,” the original 1977 “Watch The Skies” featurette and an original theatrical preview.

SURF’S UP – from 10 December
Surf’s Up goes behind the scenes of the high-octane world of competitive penguin surfing with the vocal talents of Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel and Jon Heder. Inspired by his hero, the legendary wave rider Big Z, Cody Maverick leaves his family and his town of Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off – Cody’s first pro competition. Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he deserves. But when he unexpectedly comes face to face with Geek, a washed up old surfer, Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isn’t always the one who comes in first.
The Surf’s Up Blu-ray Disc™ will include the all-new animated short “The ChubbChubbs Save XMAS,” (featuring the characters from the Academy Award®-winning short film) as well as three exciting interactive games – “Create Your Own Surfboard,” “Lava Surf,” and “Whale Hopping,” a three-part documentary about the technical achievements in making the movie, filmmakers’ commentary and much more!

A FEW GOOD MEN – from 3 December
The acclaimed drama about the dangerous dichotomy between following orders and following one’s conscience, A Few Good Men features Tom Cruise as a brash Navy lawyer who’s teamed with a gung-ho litigator, played by Demi Moore, in a politically explosive murder case. Charged with defending two Marines accused of killing a fellow soldier, the two lawyers are confronted with the complex issues of loyalty and honor, including its most sacred code and its most formidable warrior, played by Jack Nicholson. Special bonus features on the 50GB Blu-ray Disc™ include Director’s Commentary with Rob Reiner as well as two featurettes: “Code of Conduct” and “From Stage to Screen.”

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA – from 25 September (rights vary across European territories- excludes UK)
A Cinderella story like no other, Memoirs of a Geisha stars Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe, Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li in a romantic epic about a house servant blossoming against all odds to become the most captivating geisha of her day. The Blu-ray™ High-Def version of the film features an extensive array of bonus features on a 50GB disc, including an enhanced high-definition photo gallery, indexing and bookmark capabilities, audio commentary by Rob Marshall and John DeLuca, Audio Commentary, AV pop-up menus, an enhanced Blu-meter™ and 11 featurettes: “Sayuri’s Journey – From the Novel to the Screen,” “The Road to Japan,” “Geisha Bootcamp,” “Building the Hanamachi,” “The Look of Geisha,” “The Music of ‘Memoirs,’” “A Geisha’s Dance,” “The World of the Geisha,” “The Way of the Sumo,” “Rob Marshall,” and “A Day With Chef Nobu Matsuhisa.”
UNDERWORLD – from 17 September (rights vary across European territories – excludes UK)
Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman star in Underworld, a futuristic, action-packed tale of ruthless intrigue and forbidden passion set against the dazzling backdrop of a timeless, Gothic metropolis. The 50GB Underworld Blu-ray Disc™ offers an assortment of added-value features, including Director and Cast Commentary, a blooper reel, storyboard comparisons, a Finch “Worms of the Earth” music video and eight featurettes: “Fang vs. Fiction,” “Making-of ‘Underworld,’” “The Visual Effects of ‘Underworld,’” “Creature Effects,” “Stunts,” “Designing ‘Underworld,’” “The Look of ‘Underworld,’” and “Sights and Sounds of ‘Underworld.’”

BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA – from 22 October

DIE HARD Trilogy Debuts Worldwide On Blu-ray Disc

-- New Releases Feature Fox’s First Multi-Player Strategy Game And
The Most Sophisticated BD-Java Games To Date On Any High Def Format --

IFA Berlin, Germany/Los Angeles, CA – August 30, 2007 – Cementing its intention to release at least one state-of-the-art title per month, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) today announced worldwide Blu-ray new release plans for the $267 million global box-office family favorite FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (OCT. 2 North America / OCT. 9 International) and the $348 million global box-office action powerhouse LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (NOV. 20 North America / OCT. 28 International) day-and-date with the BD release of the DIE HARD TRILOGY. The announcement further supports TCFHE’s aggressive global Blu-ray Disc release strategy that includes 29 new release and “must-have” catalog titles from Fox and MGM that runs through the end of the 2007 calendar year.

FANTASTIC FOUR/DIE HARD BD Q407 Worldwide

The only high-definition packaged media universally supported by the film, music, gaming and computer industries, BD is the #1 selling high-definition packaged media.

“On a worldwide basis, BD is averaging nearly 70% market-share per week of all high definition titles sold this year and, in the U.S., it is out-performing HD DVD by 2 to 1, in some territories the ratio is 3 to 1,” noted Mike Dunn, President Worldwide, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

“Given the retail landscape this holiday season, we expect the sales gap between Blu-ray and HD DVD to grow significantly wider as the most anticipated films of the year debut exclusively on the Blu-ray format.”

“In fact, once our Blu-ray consumers, and those still on the fence, experience the advanced BD-J interactivity games available on Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer and Live Free Or Die Hard they’ll realize what we’ve been telling them all along – Blu-ray is really the only way,” continued Dunn.

FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER
The BD release of the fun and fantastically entertaining sequel to the Blockbuster hit, FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER includes hours of bonus content including deleted scenes, a full length “Making Of” documentary, multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes and commentaries with two exclusive high definition BD-Java bonus features: “Who Dares Defy Galactus?,” Fox’s first multi-player strategy game and a “Saving The World One Question At A Time” trivia game.

“Who Dares Defy Galactus?” challenges players to an intergalactic battle through a galaxy comprised of 30 planets, 10 of which are colonized and have varying levels of life force. Players compete against each other as either Galactus, who must find the live planets and consumer their energy, or The Silver Surfer, who must find the live planets and defend them against Galactus. If Galactus is victorious, additional solar systems are unlocked and the battle for live planets rages on. If The Silver Surfer defeats Galactus, the power cosmic never dies and will be waiting to consume more planets when players begin the game again.

FANTASTIC FOUR/DIE HARD BD Q407 Worldwide

Fans of “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine” will be put to the test to compete for Fantastic Four knowledge supremacy in the “Saving The World One Question At A Time” interactive, pop-up trivia game. Contestants must correctly answer a series of trivia questions related to the Fantastic Four film and Marvel comic book franchise in order to defend Earth from Galactus’ ravenous appetite. A chain of illuminated planets are aligned on the bottom of the television screen. If players fail to answer trivia questions correctly to deter Galactus, one-by-one the planets will fall dark until the World as we know it is destroyed.

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (DIE HARD 4.0 Internationally)
The fourth installment of the established world-renowned Die Hard franchise, explodes onto BD day-and-date with the DIE HARD TRILOGY and features an arsenal of bonus content including a “Die Hard” music video by Guyz Nite, a “Making Of” documentary, actor and director commentaries and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!”.

“Black Hat Intercept!” begins with a warning from ‘The Warlock’ (cult-classic writer, producer and director Kevin Smith) that a computer virus has been placed inside an unwitting Internet companies’ mainframe by the infamous cyber-terrorist, Thomas Gabriel. As the team leader from inside the surveillance van, players must guide an agent into the building, outwit the building’s security systems and personnel without being detected and then wipe the hard drive clean before the virus destroys the U.S.

Additionally, the BD debut of the DIE HARD TRILOGY comes locked and loaded with numerous bonus features including deleted scenes, featurettes, actor and director commentaries, visual effect breakdowns, alternate endings, side-by-side comparisons and much, much more.

All of the BD titles announced today will be authored in BD-J with AVC (MPEG 4) compression and presented on 50 GB dual-layer discs with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master Audio plus English, French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound. In addition to the highest quality audiovisual elements, each BD release will also feature D-Box compatible motion sensor cues to give D-Box chair equipped viewers a more life-like and intense viewing experience.

Complete title configurations and market release dates will be announced by individual territories.

FANTASTIC FOUR/DIE HARD BD Q407 Worldwide

Blu-ray also features the most advanced copy protection, player backward compatibility with the current DVD format, connectivity and advanced interactivity. Fox takes advantage of the next generation format’s high definition technology and advanced functionality to present its titles with the highest quality audiovisual elements. Showcasing picture quality with six times the resolution of DVD and theater quality “uncompressed” audio for the purest digital sound, the cutting-edge discs also feature enhanced and integrated menus, games, high-definition bonus materials and Java-encoding for more dynamic and sophisticated interactivity.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox has forwarded us details on the specs for their forthcoming Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Blu-ray Disc (due 1/2 - SRP $39.98 - see the cover art we posted yesterday). The 50GB release will feature AVC compression and English DTS HD 5.1 Lossless Master Audio, as well as French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 (with subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Cantonese and Korean). Extras will include a historical and geographic trivia track as well as a pop-up geographic map (via BD-Java - that lets you pinpoint the HMS Surprise's location throughout the film), personal scene selections, a search content option, the film's theatrical trailer (in 1080), 5 deleted scenes (standard def) and D-Box compatibility.

Låter som en funktion de skulle haft i Planet Earth och dyl. :)

Blu-ray releases on September 4th, 2007

Like most of the US, we took yesterday off, so here are the new HD releases available today. Not much to get excited about this week. Disney releases a popular catalog title with Remember the Titans and Warner has a popular TV show with Nip/Tuck. It seems an appropriate start to September, as we look forward to yet another month of catalog titles. Don't get us wrong, we're not complaining, it's actually the opposite. We love to enjoy old favorites like it's the first time again, now that we can enjoy them in the ultimate in sound and picture quality. That being said, bring on the new releases.

Remember the Titans

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture
Disney brings 'Remember the Titans' to Blu-ray in a truly excellent presentation. Having a whole BD-50 dual-layer disc to spread out in, this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode is easily up there with the best catalog releases yet on either next-gen format.

As this is the 113-minute theatrical cut of the film (not the 118-minute "Director's Cut" version released on standard-def DVD), there are none of issues that plagued that release in terms of consistency of the source. The master is absolutely pristine with no defects, blacks are inky perfection and is contrast dead-on. Colors have clearly been shined up with the help of some digital trickery, but they don't look overdone or artificial -- instead, the palette retains a realistic feel and fleshtones look natural and not waxy. Detail is excellent, and as good as any high-def I've seen from a film-based source. Depth is also wonderfully three-dimensional, and the presentation is never less than sharp as a tack.

Simply put, I just couldn't find anything wrong with this transfer, so 'Remember the Titans' earns a rare five-star video rating.

The Audio: Rating the Sound
Nearly matching the quality of the excellent video transfer is a terrific uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround track (48kHz/24-bit/6.9mbps). It helps that the film's sound design has plenty of impact, maintaining a consistently enveloping presence almost throughout.

Though 'Remember the Titans' is not your typically bombastic Jerry Bruckheimer action film, its makers still clearly follow the same slam-bang sonic playbook, and this mix can deliver a wallop. The football scenes in particular really crunch, with airtight low end that delivers some serious bass to the subwoofer. Dynamics also have a sharp clarity that rings authentic, and dialogue is expertly recorded. Surrounds are quite engaged, with localization of discrete effects first-rate. The heft of the rears is considerable and consistent, with only quieter scenes perhaps a little lacking in sustained and subtle ambiance. Otherwise, this is a very involving soundtrack that certainly won't disappoint.

Die Hard 4 Gets Rated Version on Blu-ray?
Posted September 4, 2007 by Josh

20th Century Fox Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that the Blu-ray version of 'Live Free or Die Hard' will be delivered in the PG-13 rated form. In the ultimate head-scratcher, the Fox Blu-ray website shows a cover for the title which says "Unrated". We have contacted Fox to get some clarification, but for now it looks like Blu-ray fans will be neglected by the studio this fall.

Tartan releases Oldboy to Blu-ray

SEPT. 4 | Tartan Video USA has jumped into the Blu-ray Disc camp, with its first release in the high-definition format, Oldboy, arriving on Nov. 6 (prebook Sept. 25).

The Asian cult horror specialist decided to release exclusively on Blu-ray because of the format’s significant industry support. Although Paramount Home Entertainment recently opted to switch its dual backing to exclusive HD DVD support, there are still more major studios solely siding with Blu-ray.

Released on DVD in 2005, Oldboy is considered one of Tartan’s biggest hits. Directed by Park Chan-Wook, Oldboy follows a man who was wrongly imprisoned for 15 years and is suddenly released. The Blu-ray version will be priced at $34.95.

“To go with Blu-ray was a no-brainer for Tartan,” said Hamish McAlpine, the company’s owner.

In addition to the feature film, the Blu-ray set also will include a standard-definition bonus disc holding extra content.

Interestingly, Tartan distributor Genius Products has been releasing theatrical films from its majority owner The Weinstein Co. on HD DVD, including Clerks II and Scary Movie 4. To this point, TWC remains HD DVD exclusive.

Tartan joins Blu-ray camp with Old Boy Nov. 6

Just got the official release from Tartan Video USA that they are releasing their first title in hi-def on Blu-ray Disc Nov. 6 ($34.95), the cult favorite Korean thriller "Old Boy."
Hamish McAlpine, founder of the 21-year-old Tartan Films in the UK and owner of three-year-old Tartan Video USA and its Asia Extreme brand, says in the media release, “To go with Blu-ray was a no-brainer for Tartan. Not only is the format superior to HD-DVD, but also the fact that (more) studios have chosen to release their films on Blu-ray means that this so-called ‘format war’ is over before it has really begun.”

The two-hour, R-rated "Oldboy" is Park Chan-Wook’s revenge tale of a man who’s wrongly been imprisoned for 15 years and is then suddenly released. Given money and a cell phone (and a mysterious young girl who tries to help), he’s challenged to discover who incarcerated him in the first place, but he only has five days to uncover the truth.

"Oldboy," in Korean with English and Spanish subtitles, is presented in anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1. It also offers original English-dubbed soundtracks.

Here is a list of the special features listed on the media release:

DISC 1 (Blu Ray Disc)

Feature /with optional English dub
Director Commentary
Director and Cast Commentary
Director and Cinematographer Commentary
Deleted Scenes (Standard Definition) with optional Commentary
Original Trailer (Standard Definition)

DISC 2 (Standard Definition Bonus Disc)

The Music Score
CGI Documentary

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City

.....The generous treatment really pays off, as this 1080p/VC-1 encode looks terrific.

.....this is a first-class, five-star transfer.

As great as the video is, the audio is perhaps even more impressive. Sony BMG offers an uncompressed PCM 2.0 Stereo mix (48kHz/24-bit), and -- in a first for the music label -- a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround track at a hefty 96kHz/24-bit. As terrific as the PCM track is, I have to give the TrueHD mix the nod -- simply put, it's pitch perfect.
