:P

Alas, we've now received the full press release for 'Live Free or Die Hard' from Fox, and despite earlier indications, it seems that although two (of the three) DVD editions will include the unrated edition, the Blu-ray will contain the PG-13 version of the film only PG-13? :(

the first two Spider-Man flicks will come significantly less feature-packed.

Neither 'Spider-Man' nor 'Spider-Man 2' will include any of the bonus features from their original DVD releases, and -- in a first for Sony -- neither will include support for PCM audio

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

En till som försvarar det :P

:D

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Försvarar vad? TrueHD var "lossless" sist jag kollade...

O yes Razter, Trasformers är HD DVD ONLY ;)

Nä precis, so what's your point?

From Director Michael Bay and Executive Producer Steven Spielberg Comes the BIGGEST Original Blockbuster of the Year, TRANSFORMERS
$650+ Million Smash Hit from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures Rolls out on DVD and HD DVD October 16 in Two-Disc Sets Bursting with a Universe of Bonus Features to Immerse Fans of All Ages in the World of the Legendary ROBOTS IN DISGUISE

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The armies of CYBERTRON invaded theaters with a juggernaut fury that shook the summer of 2007, but on October 16, 2007 fans of all ages will discover that there is far “More Than Meets The Eye” to the massive mechanical behemoths when TRANSFORMERS arrives on Earth in spectacular DVD and HD DVD two-disc Special Edition sets as well as on a single disc from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures; distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Earning over $650 million at the global box office to date, the massive production exploded onto screens from the creative minds of director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, taking audiences by storm and becoming the biggest original film of the year. The first live-action film based on the enduringly popular “robots in disguise”, TRANSFORMERS features the ultimate battle between good and evil, as the peace-loving AUTOBOTS seek to protect humanity from the evil forces of the DECEPTICONS. The action-packed film stars a hot young cast of up-and-coming actors including Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia), Josh Duhamel (“Las Vegas”), Tyrese Gibson (Four Brothers) and Megan Fox (“Hope & Faith”), as well as seasoned performers such as Jon Voight (National Treasure) and John Turturro (The Good Shepherd). But the biggest stars are the TRANSFORMERS robots themselves – including fan favorites OPTIMUS PRIME, MEGATRON, BUMBLEBEE, RATCHET, JAZZ and more – brought to life by revolutionary new VFX techniques developed by the innovative digital wizards at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).

The TRANSFORMERS Special Edition two-disc sets provide an incredible experience with an arsenal of bonus material that delivers excitement and fun for long-time fans, as well as for viewers who are new to the TRANSFORMERS universe. The extensive special features include commentary by Michael Bay and two multi-part in-depth documentaries exploring the human elements of the film as well as the phenomenal robot stars. Presented in multiple parts, “Our World” and “Their War” include segments with Steven Spielberg discussing his love for the franchise and the early concept for the movie, the extensive casting process, the training, consultants and real-world weapons provided by the military to lend authenticity to the film, the evolution of the robots from Hasbro’s iconic toy line to big-screen stars, the unique vehicles created for the movie, a discussion with ILM’s legendary digital artists and much more.

The discs go even further behind-the-scenes with early sketch concepts of the robots and an in-depth look at the making of the SKORPONOK attack from writing and conceptualization through the creation of the stunning visual effects.

Out-Of-This World High-Def Content:

In addition to superior picture and sound and all of the above bonus material presented in high definition, the HD DVD presentation provides consumers with a host of web-enabled features, which are accessible through all connected HD DVD players. The web-enabled features take advantage of technology that allows the studio to present the content in a new way. These cutting-edge, online features can be updated, providing consumers with an evolving entertainment experience months, or even years, after the disc is physically produced. Initial features include a TRANSFORMERS Intelligence Mode in which an on-screen dashboard over the film provides information about the robots and weapons, their strength levels, character updates and more. Plus, a GPS Locator that can access a map and GPS coordinates. Paramount’s TRANSFORMERS HD DVD connectivity capabilities will reveal additional HD DVD exclusive features at street date and at various time periods in the future.

The HD DVD also includes a TRANSFORMERS H.U.D. (Heads Up Display) that lets viewers access running text commentary while watching the film and even view relevant behind-the-scenes footage in a picture-in-picture window. Additionally, viewers can explore the main robots’ individual details in high definition with the TRANSFORMERS Tech Inspector.

DVD:

The TRANSFORMERS DVD is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 televisions with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, French 5.1 Surround and Spanish 5.1 Surround with English, French and Spanish subtitles. Total runtime is 143 minutes.

TRANSFORMERS Special Edition DVD bonus features include:

This October, Hostess, the maker of America’s most iconic snack cakes, will be launching a national consumer promotion on approximately 17 million TRANSFORMERS themed packages at convenience and grocery/mass merchandiser retail stores. Consumers will be directed via www.hostesscakes.com to a Hostess micro-site where they can play an instant-win game for a chance to win a 50” Plasma TV and Home Entertainment system, portable DVD players and other prizes.

Synopsis:

From director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg comes a thrilling battle between the AUTOBOTS and the DECEPTICONS. When their epic struggle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil DECEPTICONS and ultimate power is a clue held by Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf). Join the fight for mankind in the extraordinary adventure that “features some of the most spectacular action and effects sequences of any movie of its kind and will appeal to the kid in all of us” (Claudia Puig, USA Today).

Tester?
Ptja...

(Note 'Dawn of the Dead' also includes a Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 mix, but it pales in comparison to the TrueHD track. Dialogue is tinny, the surrounds seem muffled, and channel movement is stocky. It's clearly a weaker track that sounds much like the standard track on the Unrated DVD.)

http://hddvd.highdef...hedead2004.html

Alas, the Toshiba HD DVD version of 'Brothers Grimm' doesn't hold up as well in the audio department. The Disney Blu-ray enjoyed a terrific uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround track (48 kHz/16-bit/4.6mbps), but the HD DVD import suffers by comparison with a lowly Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 track (at 1.5mbps). Certainly, it is far from terrible, and on its own terms it's arguably quite good. But with the film's sound design so aggressive and exciting, this one can't help but be out-shined by the Blu-ray's PCM track.

Surround use is quite active. There are plenty of nifty discrete effects that fill the rear speakers, and lots of near-seamless pans to buttress the fanciful on-screen action. The PCM track on the Blu-ray is clearly superior in delivering a heftier, more palpable presence in the rears, though again the Dolby Digital holds up well. Timbre is rich and warm, particularly the orchestral score by Dario Marianelli that is lushly rendered. Again, however, the high-end in particular sounds fuller in uncompressed form, and low bass also delivers more of a wallop -- just compare those early scenes with the galloping horses, and the distinction should be clear on a decent set of speakers. At least dialogue is comparable on each, with even Heath Ledger's mumbly dialogue always audible. Still, Disney's Blu-ray edition is the clear winner in this battle.

Our Review Reference System

All disc reviews at High-Def Digest are completed using the leading consumer HD home theater products currently on the market. We are often upgrading our equipment, so for each individual review, note the date it was written and compare that against the detailed (and historically annotated) equipment list below.

The current core of our system is the Sony KDS-R70XBR2 70" LCoS 1080P HDTV. It is one of the elite consumer monitors that can accept full 1080p via its HDMI inputs, allowing it to display every last line of high-definition's maximum resolution of 1920x1080. Our Sony KDS-R70XBR2 has been professionally calibrated by an ISF-certified technician to ensure a reference-quality presentation.

Audio is processed with the Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV 7.1CH Dolby Digital/DTS A/V Receiver, which supports full 192 kHz / 24-Bit conversion of decoded Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio formats via HDMI. It powers three S-150THX left, center and right speakers, a pair of left and right SS-150 surrounds, an additional pair of S-100B back left and back right surrounds, and a M&K MX-200 subwoofer. No artificial equalization or other sound processing is used to retain the integrity of the original source material.

For high-def disc playback, we currently use Toshiba's HD-XA2 for HD DVD, and Samsung's BD-P1000 for Blu-ray. Beginning in November of 2006, we also began comparing high-def playback on our standalone players vs high-def playback on Sony's PlayStation 3 60Gb Blu-ray Player and Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD Player.

For comparison with other standard definition and high-definition pre-recorded and broadcast video sources, we are currently using a Panasonic RP91 standard DVD player, JVC HM-DH30000U D-VHS with D-Theater high-def VCR, and a Dish Network HD-942 High-Definition DVR to receive satellite and terrestrial HD broadcasts. All standard-definition DVD comparisons are made via 480p outputs; no upconversion to 720p or 1080i is made to best represent image quality typical of what most consumers are capable of receiving.

All discs provided to High-Def Digest for review are final consumer release versions. We do not review test discs or other non-consumer-quality pre-release versions.

One On One With Paramount's Alan Bell

Postad bild

Even if you have been living under a rock lately (and no, not The Rock Michael Bay), you're aware that Paramount and DreamWorks recently switched to exclusive HD DVD support. While much of the press focus on this move has centered on the alleged $150 million that changed hands, Paramount has gotten out front in explaining that there were cost and technology factors involved in this momentous decision.
Right or wrong, many people won't look past the money story. But Paramount's Chief Technology Officer Alan Bell (pictured above, with the author) was kind enough to sit down with me at CEDIA and explain some of the reasons he recommended that Paramount make this move.

First and foremost, Alan is not part of the business end of things at Paramount. So questions of subsidies and/or financial incentives regarding Paramount's Blu-ray participation and current pro-HD DVD stance are not ones he can answer. But Alan did tell me that as CTO, his opinion played a role in making the move and that supporting HD DVD was indeed his firm recommendation.

Regarding what went into that decision Alan reiterated some things that have been written elsewhere, including HD DVD's stable set of specifications, advanced interactivity, and the difficulty of authoring and replicating Blu-ray Discs.

Alan's position is that Paramount would undoubtedly like to get more involved in advanced interactivity (think Transformers), and that right now the limited capabilities and multiple hardware platforms on Blu-ray would make it difficult to offer these features on both formats and market them properly.

Alan believes that one of the things that makes HD DVD's web enabled interactivity unique is that it offers a transition between physical media and the download world. On top of that, the surface hasn't even been scratched as far as merchandising and other revenue streams that could result. While Blu-ray Discs will start offering networked interactivity late this year or early next, Alan feels the current situation is poor given that most of the third-gen standalone BD players don't support these features.

During our meeting, to illustrate Alan's point that the authoring for BD discs is far more complicated (and therefore expensive), Microsoft's Kevin Collins showed us a graphic purported to be the code required to author a chapter jump on an HDi-authored HD DVD disc and the Java code required to author the same operation on a Blu-ray Disc. The HDi code appeared to be several lines long, while the Java code filled almost an entire page. Time is money in the authoring world, as in so many other walks of life.

Among the things I asked Alan was whether at any point he had the idea that Blu-ray would offer interactivity features that were superior, which might provide a payoff for the increased difficulty. He said that while something could came up down the road, he is not currently aware of anything, beyond an additional layer of copy protection, which offers no benefit to consumers.

Alan also believes that HD DVD has much greater capability to ramp up to massive scale for HD releases. There are more replciation lines available for HD DVD, and because of its similarity to DVD bringing new lines up for HD DVD will be faster, cheaper and easier.

HD DVD is already achieving significantly higher yields in replication at much lower costs. Alan also explained that bringing a replication facility online for Blu-ray requires a massive up front expenditure in equipment, and once that's complete that line is Blu-ray Disc only. HD DVD replication requires something more along the lines of a retrofit, is cheaper by several orders of magnitude, and that same line can still replicate DVDs, offering greater utility.

When I pointed out that most of this was known over a year ago, when Paramount embarked on the dual-format platform, Alan's response was interesting. He said that knowing something on paper is much different than experiencing it firsthand. He described Paramount's year-long foray in dual format releases as offering invaluable experience which led to the decision to back HD DVD. He also felt that Blu-ray's 50GB capacity hasn't panned out to be the qualitative advantage it was supposed to be with the next-gen audio and video codecs.

Overall, Alan's message was that HD DVD represents the simplest and most cost effective way for Paramount to offer the best HD experience to consumers, and that HD DVD will in turn remain more cost effective for consumers, which will bring more people to adopt HD in general.
