Sony Pictures has openly invited Toshiba and Microsoft to join the Blu-ray Disc Association.5 September 2007 9:00 GMT The comment above comes from Don Eklund, executive vice president of advanced technologies and Rich Marty, vice president, new business development, after Pocket-lint asked which companies they would most like to have in the Association, following the announcement from Acer that it would start to sell PCs with Blu-ray drives. "We would love to have Toshiba and Microsoft on board," said Don Eklund in an interview with Pocket-lint at IFA in Berlin, Germany. The IFA event saw an official announcement from Toshiba and the HD DVD Promotion Group about the lowering of prices for both HD DVD stand-alone players as well as for laptops with HD DVD drives, trying to fight the format war on price points. Eklund and Marty questioned Toshiba's pricing strategy; "Tosh can't keep dropping prices much more," said Eklund. "It maybe a strategy for fighting a format war, but for us it has to be profitable." According to the vice president of technologies he'd: "Never thought the price was an issue... when it comes to investing in a state of the art entertainment system with HD-Ready television and surround sound system, having to spend a bit extra to get Blu-ray, we feel, isn't going to drive customers away. It's the bigger picture we are looking at." That apparent naivety is why, according to the Blu-ray camp, players are considerably more expensive than their HD DVD counterparts, because they have to be profitable, and it seems that DVD no longer offered that kind of attractive bottom line. "The DVD format was good, but profitability only lasted for a couple of years before there was no money to be had in the hardware market," said Marty. "We believe consumers are smart enough to realise the benefits and pay the extra accordingly." When questioned on the internet, and the potential for the format war to be eclipsed entirely by movie downloads, sounding like music execs from the turn of the last century, both Eklund and Marty dismissed the potential of the internet: "People aren't interested in downloading videos at the moment. The internet is a good way of delivering music but not video," said Eklund. "Blu-ray has a good 8 to 10 years before the internet catches up." And as for how consumers are supposed to get around the Dreamworks and Paramount shift to HD DVD? "Buy it on DVD," Marty suggested - before quickly adding that Blu-ray players have upscaling features so you can still get the most out of the picture quality. Källa: pocket-lint.co.uk

Pressreleasen på den där mediaservern. SONY ORGANIZES DIGITAL WORLD WITH HOME ENTERTAINMENT SERVER Device Features 500GB Hard Drive, 200 Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD Changer
DENVER (CEDIA Booth #600), Sept. 5, 2007 - Sony Electronics today unveiled an innovative solution for organizing personal collections of digital movies, music and photos in a stand-alone device called the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server.
The unit features a full HD 1080p 200-disc Blu-ray Disc™/DVD/CD changer (196 12cm BD/DVD/CDs and four 8cm BD/DVDs) and 500GB hard disc drive that can store up to 137 hours of video, 40,000 songs or 20,000 digital photos. Additionally, the device is Sony’s first Blu-ray Disc-capable component other than a VAIO® notebook or optical PC drive that can burn content to Blu-ray Discs, as well as DVDs. “With its extraordinary storage capacity, the HES-V1000 unit is the perfect device to store and share personal digital content, such as high-definition home movies and photos,” said Christopher Fawcett, vice president of home video marketing for Sony Electronics. “Not only can you burn photo slide shows and home movies directly to BD or DVD to share with friends and family, the device’s massive storage capacity allows you to house an entire collection of movies, digital music and photos.”
In addition to its vast playback and storage capabilities, the HES-V1000 unit offers Sony’s new x-Application® feature that includes x-Pict Story™ HD and x-ScrapBook™ photo slide show so users can create customized photo presentations with the click of the remote.
x-Pict Story HD utilizes unique layouts with sophisticated face-recognition technology and syncs transitions with music selected from personal content libraries to create a unique photo slide presentation.
x-ScrapBook offers a compelling slide show that the device automatically arranges in a very fast timeframe to explore memories in a personalized digital scrapbook. Users can also export both types of slide shows to Blu-ray Discs or DVDs to share with family and friends.
Featuring Sony’s Technical Emmy award-winning XMBTM (XrossMediaBar) menu, the system offers easy set up and content navigation. Additionally, when the system is connected to the Internet via Ethernet or an optional wireless adapter (sold separately), it accesses commercial CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc movie and music metadata for discs housed or stored in the device, making it fast and easy enjoy content. While connected to the Internet via Ethernet, users can also download any firmware updates directly to the system.
The HES-V1000 system can play back music stored on the hard disk drive. It has the ability to wirelessly stream music throughout the home with a router to other devices, including Sony’s CPF-IX001 wireless music player and other Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-compatible wireless devices, such as PLAYSTATION® 3 (PS3) videogame console and select VAIO notebook computers. The system can register up to ten devices with four independent audio streams.
Storage, playback and archiving abilities are not the only features users will appreciate. The new device has a stylish design featuring a mirror black tower measuring about 12 1/4 x 31 5/8 x 15 7/8 inches. The cabinet’s integrated controls are all backlit touch sensitive. The displays can either be read from the front or top of the tower.
Connectivity is generous with S-video, composite, audio and HDV/DV (i.LINK®) inputs, as well as HDMI™ with BRAVIA Theatre Sync, component, optical, coaxial and analog outputs. The unit also features Memory Stick® media inputs, Secure Digital cards, CompactFlash media and xD-Picture CardTM flash memory readers, allowing easy transfer of digital image content.
The HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server will be available in October for about $3,500. It will be offered direct at sonystyle.com and at Sony Style retail stores nationwide, as well as at military base exchanges and authorized dealers around the country.

Alienware's Hangar18:HD 1080p media server announced at CEDIA Alienware -- always at the forefront of rocking your ever-loving world -- has delved deeper into the media server fray with its new Hangar18:HD high definition home media center announced today at CEDIA. Apparently the "higher end" media center we mentioned last month is rearing it's power-heavy head in the form of this new HD server. The Monster of Media (our pet name) rocks up to 4TB of hot-swappable hard drive storage, a built-in Blu-ray player / burner, recording and playback at 1080p (output via HDMI), support for an internal CableCARD (OCUR), and a Dolby Digital 7.1 preamp output. Alienware promises that the Hangar18:HD will, "Crush and dismember all other media centers," and further recommends a titanium table to place the unit atop since other materials, "can't handle the hotness." It should be noted that these last two statements have been fabricated, though this is kind of a sweet box. No word on price or availability, but we'll keep you posted.

Sony gives kid who saved dad's life a PS3You might have seen a story floating around earlier this month about an Oregon nine-year-old who took the wheel of his dad's big rig and steered it to safety after the father suffered a seizure and blacked out. Well, the kid, Matt Lovo, said all he wanted in return for his heroics was a new Playstation 3, and after the dad rebuffed a community effort to pitch in and buy one, Sony stepped in a donated a unit. Big ups to Sony for the generosity and to Matt for his bravery -- we hear he's planning on installing the console in the truck, so maybe the vibrations from the engine will make up for that lack of rumble. Blu-ray Standalone Players Out-Selling HD DVD Although it's the type of news we'd expect to see accompanied by a huge press release, Sony apparently revealed Wednesday that stand-alone Blu-ray players have begun out-selling their HD DVD counterparts. ADVERTISEMENT
As reported by Video Business, the revelation came during Sony's CEDIA press conference, when Sony VP Chris Fawcett said that within the last 12 weeks, Blu-ray players had pulled out ahead of HD DVD.
According to the Video Business report, Fawcett cited NPD Group research for the data, but declined to declined to provide exact market share percentages of the two sides. Fawcett is said to have attributed the surge as mostly due to the introduction of Sony's $499 player in early June.
Although Blu-ray has enjoyed a 2-to-1 lead in disc sales over HD DVD since the start of 2007, the HD DVD camp has long attributed Blu-ray's lead to the short term market dominance of the Blu-ray enabled PlayStation 3, while pointing to its decisive lead in standalone player sales as a long term sign of strength in the high-def format war.
If independent numbers end up confirming this news from Sony, it would certainly seem to be a punch in the gut for HD DVD, especially given the extent to which its backers have emphasized their own lead in this category.
While the competition may claim leadership based on one month of data, Toshiba has had continued sales leadership in every month since the original HD DVD players launched 17 months ago."

Tartan joins Blu-ray camp with Old Boy Nov. 6Just got the official release from Tartan Video USA that they are releasing their first title in hi-def on Blu-ray Disc Nov. 6 ($34.95), the cult favorite Korean thriller "Old Boy." Hamish McAlpine, founder of the 21-year-old Tartan Films in the UK and owner of three-year-old Tartan Video USA and its Asia Extreme brand, says in the media release, “To go with Blu-ray was a no-brainer for Tartan. Not only is the format superior to HD-DVD, but also the fact that (more) studios have chosen to release their films on Blu-ray means that this so-called ‘format war’ is over before it has really begun.”Källa: Hollywoodinhidef.com

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Jag håller med dig till 100%, multimedia.

One On One With Paramount's Alan Bell Even if you have been living under a rock lately (and no, not The Rock Michael Bay), you're aware that Paramount and DreamWorks recently switched to exclusive HD DVD support. While much of the press focus on this move has centered on the alleged $150 million that changed hands, Paramount has gotten out front in explaining that there were cost and technology factors involved in this momentous decision. Right or wrong, many people won't look past the money story. But Paramount's Chief Technology Officer Alan Bell (pictured above, with the author) was kind enough to sit down with me at CEDIA and explain some of the reasons he recommended that Paramount make this move.
First and foremost, Alan is not part of the business end of things at Paramount. So questions of subsidies and/or financial incentives regarding Paramount's Blu-ray participation and current pro-HD DVD stance are not ones he can answer. But Alan did tell me that as CTO, his opinion played a role in making the move and that supporting HD DVD was indeed his firm recommendation.
Regarding what went into that decision Alan reiterated some things that have been written elsewhere, including HD DVD's stable set of specifications, advanced interactivity, and the difficulty of authoring and replicating Blu-ray Discs.
Alan's position is that Paramount would undoubtedly like to get more involved in advanced interactivity (think Transformers), and that right now the limited capabilities and multiple hardware platforms on Blu-ray would make it difficult to offer these features on both formats and market them properly.
Alan believes that one of the things that makes HD DVD's web enabled interactivity unique is that it offers a transition between physical media and the download world. On top of that, the surface hasn't even been scratched as far as merchandising and other revenue streams that could result. While Blu-ray Discs will start offering networked interactivity late this year or early next, Alan feels the current situation is poor given that most of the third-gen standalone BD players don't support these features.
During our meeting, to illustrate Alan's point that the authoring for BD discs is far more complicated (and therefore expensive), Microsoft's Kevin Collins showed us a graphic purported to be the code required to author a chapter jump on an HDi-authored HD DVD disc and the Java code required to author the same operation on a Blu-ray Disc. The HDi code appeared to be several lines long, while the Java code filled almost an entire page. Time is money in the authoring world, as in so many other walks of life.
Among the things I asked Alan was whether at any point he had the idea that Blu-ray would offer interactivity features that were superior, which might provide a payoff for the increased difficulty. He said that while something could came up down the road, he is not currently aware of anything, beyond an additional layer of copy protection, which offers no benefit to consumers.
Alan also believes that HD DVD has much greater capability to ramp up to massive scale for HD releases. There are more replciation lines available for HD DVD, and because of its similarity to DVD bringing new lines up for HD DVD will be faster, cheaper and easier.
HD DVD is already achieving significantly higher yields in replication at much lower costs. Alan also explained that bringing a replication facility online for Blu-ray requires a massive up front expenditure in equipment, and once that's complete that line is Blu-ray Disc only. HD DVD replication requires something more along the lines of a retrofit, is cheaper by several orders of magnitude, and that same line can still replicate DVDs, offering greater utility.
When I pointed out that most of this was known over a year ago, when Paramount embarked on the dual-format platform, Alan's response was interesting. He said that knowing something on paper is much different than experiencing it firsthand. He described Paramount's year-long foray in dual format releases as offering invaluable experience which led to the decision to back HD DVD. He also felt that Blu-ray's 50GB capacity hasn't panned out to be the qualitative advantage it was supposed to be with the next-gen audio and video codecs.
Overall, Alan's message was that HD DVD represents the simplest and most cost effective way for Paramount to offer the best HD experience to consumers, and that HD DVD will in turn remain more cost effective for consumers, which will bring more people to adopt HD in general.
