At launch, 20 U.S. movie titles will be available, including many from Mel Gibson's Icon Entertainment International. That's pretty sparse, and the list doesn't include that many hot titles. Of course, Blu-ray and HD DVD didn't start out with many more than that either, and New Medium Enterprises says that much more content from around the world, including many Bollywood titles, will be available.

Det kommer med 100% säkerhet inte att släppas några filmer på TL51 om det visar sig att G1,G2 eller G3-spelarna inte klarar av formatet. Vore ju kommersiellt självmord att släppa dessa filmer då.

Och yields måste verkligen vara sämst, antagligen därför MS satte igång sitt BD-50 yields FUD-program för 2v sen, dom ville grunda för TL51, smart.

The A30, A35 and XA2 will all be able to pass Bit stream audio if selected so a modern mid to high end receiver can decode DTS HD Master Audio or any advanced audio codec. They will not decode DTS MA in the player.

Amir, can you give us a cast-iron guarantee that HD-DVD will always be region free?

I can give you such a guarantee for every HD DVD player and disc you buy.  Nothing can change that.

There have been discussions around adding region coding to HD DVD but those efforts have died down. And even if they were to be revived, they would not apply to products already shipped. So I would say you can purchase HD DVD with confidence in this regard.

By the way, I hope people don't harp on above as Disney never adopting HD DVD. Disney is a board member of AACS, the very group which decided against taking on region coding. Nothing in their decision to adopt BD format had anything to do with region coding.

Q. Is there much of a difference in picture quality between, say, the Oppo 1080p upconverting DVD player and one of the two actual HD (Blu-ray and HD DVD) players? I know one plays/up converts "regular" DVDs and the other plays actual "HD" DVDs. I have a 40-inch 1080p LCD television and am ready to replace my Toshiba DVD player with something a little better. But from what I know, it may be best for me to wait until the HD DVD/Blu-ray war is over and a clear leader is named. It all takes me back to the days of VHS/Beta. I would hate to spend a lot of money on one format only to find out it isn't the winner in the end. — Jim Bauer Bloomington, Ill.

A. First of all, at a relatively small 40-inch screen size, you are unlikely to tell a difference between a 1080i signal or a 1080p signal. Both will look fantastic.

When playing regular DVDs, there would be little if any difference between them because they all upconvert standard DVDs, although the feature is not touted as much on the HD DVD and Blu-ray players. Playing a HD DVD or Blu-ray disc will give a superior picture compared to an upconverted DVD. This is because an upconverted DVD is not truly high-definition. What an upconverting DVD player does is match the resolution of the DVD to the TV so the picture is as clean as possible. As you seem to know already, the HD DVD and Blu-ray discs contain true high-definition material that has several times the detail of a standard DVD. The larger the screen, the more the difference will stand out.

Waiting may be the most prudent course for many, but at the current price points, I think that it is relatively safe to test the waters with HD DVD. At $299 retail, the entry-level Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player is a pretty good buy. Even if Blu-ray wins out over time you still can play the HD DVDs you already own and it is a pretty good upconverting player. The Toshiba HD-A2 retails for $299 but available for less if you shop around, and they currently have a promotion that includes five free discs. The HD-A2 is 1080i not 1080p, but again, do not let that bother you ... check my blog for 1080p versus 1080i articles to learn why. Besides it not being that big of a deal at smaller screen sizes, the 1080p step-up model of the Toshiba, the HD-A20, converts a 1080i signal internally to 1080p so it really does not perform any better than the 1080i HD-A2.

Nope. We don't have anyone thinking, dreaming, designing or anything remotely related to blu-ray on Xbox. That doesn't stop people from thinking, dreaming, etc. about us doing it. But that doesn't make it reality

Will Toshiba's latest third-generation players support 51GB discs? Only time will tell.
HD DVD can now boast a 1GB storage advantage over Blu-ray Disc

When comparing the two leading high-definition optical storage formats, the immediate difference between the two is that Blu-ray Disc can store 20GB more than HD DVD. Of course, the HD DVD side had its answer to the apparent deficiency when Toshiba announced at the Consumer Electronics Show 2007 that had developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes.

The 51GB standard announced early this year, has finally been approved by the DVD Forum – the body responsible for the DVD and HD DVD standard. The 51GB HD DVD standard, which was submitted by Toshiba in April, received approval on August 31, 2007, according to Screen Digest.

HD DVD discs hold 15GB per layer. In order to reach a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc-besting capacity, an extra 2GB per layer was squeezed in, for a total of 51GB. Toshiba states that continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, allowing for the boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc.

The new disc shares the same disc structure as standard DVD and previously announced HD DVD formats: two 0.6-mm thick discs bonded back-to-back. According to Toshiba, the added cost to produce discs with the third layer is minimal, thanks to the use of the same physical disc structure as DVD.

Right now, it is still unclear if the 51GB media requires any change in hardware specification. Should the 51GB HD DVD be incompatible with existing hardware, then current owners of HD DVD players may be left in a situation even less desirable than the Blu-ray Disc Association’s decision to mandate a hardware change this fall. Neither the DVD Forum nor Toshiba has indicated if the new media requires an upgraded optical assembly.

“Seeing that the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD battle doesn’t seem to have a clear winner yet, future-proofing a media player is a difficult task. I remember one of my friends who bought dozens of Betamax cassettes back in the 80s. We still give him a lot of grief about it. The good news is that iMuse provides a solution that won’t require customers to choose one format over the other yet,” says Dan Lannin, director of marketing for iMuse Electronics Inc.

Bill Duncan, CEO of iMuse Electronics, Inc. says, “We’re covering all of our bases. Not only are we offering compatibility with the three different formats, but we’ve ensured that our systems can handle the increased bandwidth and storage requirements of high definition media. When it comes to choosing a high-definition media player, most people weigh the options, cross their fingers, and hope they make the right decision. iMuse, utilizing this time of transition, is introducing a future-proof high definition solution—players that accommodate all three standards in the DVD market. Customers can expect to see these products shipping starting in the fourth quarter of 2007.
