Sony Pictures has just announced they will be bringing blockbuster “The Da Vinci Code” (Directed by Ron Howard and Starring Tom Hanks) to Blu-ray Disc at the end of this year. It’s scheduled for a December 31st release date. I’ll be adding cover art and Amazon pre-order links as they become available.

Apparently this is supposed to be pretty “hush hush” as my anonymous source has told me but… It’s being said that Sony Pictures is planning to announce in early October (in a formal PRESS RELEASE) that they will be bringing the hit comedy of the year “Superbad” to Blu-ray Disc on December 4th.

Sony will be treating the film to a Special 2 Blu-ray Disc set that will feature obviously Lossless Linear PCM 5.1 sound as well as a good amount of bonus materials I’m guessing.

Samsungs kommande spelare för bägge formaten ligger på min inköpslista i vinter. Bara att hoppas att den lever upp till specarna som antyder att den blir riktigt bra på uppspelning av vanliga dvd-filmer också. Hoppas att den inte blir uppskjuten till våren bara, releasen i USA var visst framskjuten till december.
I dagsläget (och förmodligen tills nästa generation HD-format) så tror jag att kombispelare kommer att behövas, om man inte har massor med plats och vill ha dubbla spelare eller några stora filmbolag blir mutade åt något håll.

I dagsläget finns det fyra alternativ.

1: Sitta och tro att dvd är ett bra format, och vänta på billigare priser och/eller vinnare av BD/HD DVD.

2: Satsa på HD DVD och missa hälften av alla HD-filmer.

3: Satsa på Blu-ray och missa den andra hälften av alla HD-filmer.

4: Köpa en kombo-spelare eller en spelare av varje och kunna se båda formaten.

Egentligen är det enda vettiga alternativ 4. Vilket dock är det dyraste. Det som jag däremot är ganska säker på är att man inte gör bort sig, vilket alternativ man än väljer. Jag har svårt att tro att det kommer säljas apparater som bara klarar ett av formaten om två år. Dina HD DVD- och Blu-ray-filmer kommer du kunna spela upp, även om din spelare går sönder om två-tre år.

But I've saved the best for last ... best of all is popping in the disc ... and watching the Universal Pictures logo unfold on BD! There's something we don't get to see every day ...

Commentary by director/co-writer Roland Emmerich and producer Mark Gordon: This commentary was mostly informative, but my biggest issue (likewise with so many commentary tracks) is that there was too much dead air. Granted there isn’t as much dead air as most commentaries, but you would figure the director and producer of a film would have tons to say. Anyhow, the information Emmerich and Gordon mention is interesting enough (particularly the set production and stories both shared), but I don’t imagine myself listening to this more than once.
Commentary by co-writer Jeffrey Nachmanoff, director of photography Ueli Steiger, film editor David Brenner and film production designer Barry Chusid: This one is similar to the above, but just more of a technical commentary. If you’re looking to hear more about the technical aspects of the film, which in their own right are interesting, this is definitely the commentary for you. The attention to detail is worth a listen at least once through.
Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Roland Emmerich and Mark Gordon: Running 18 minutes, we get about 10 different deleted scenes. Some are interesting (the conversation the Japanese man had with New York), but most fell flat (the sequence with Sam and his friends inside his father’s home).
Global Warming Trivia Track: Exclusive to this Blu-Ray release is this trivia track, which works like other trivia tracks featured on Fox releases. Throughout the running of the film, various trivia facts relating to the film’s subject pop up giving us information about global warming, storms, buoys and hybrid vehicles. While nothing new if you’ve been following the global warming debates, this trivia track is a nice welcome from Fox as they typically devoid their releases of features.
Global Warming Interactive Game: Running throughout the course of the film, the object of this interactive game is to answer 50 different questions currently. Basically a question appears on screen and you have 30 seconds to answer the question. If you answer the question correctly, the temperature drops 1 degree Farenheit, if you answer incorrectly, it raises 2 degrees Farenheit. This is definitely a great feature as it shows what the future of Blu-Ray interactivity may be. The only caveat is that the game took a bit to load on my BDP-S300 (about 60 seconds).

Nej, jag har valt BD och kommer inte att satsa något på HDDVD. Finns inga ideologiska själ eller annat tjafs runt detta val utan bara det att jag har valt ett av formaten genom att läsa på och ta ställning. Precis som jag gjorde med Plasma vs LCD.

'Rent' Headed to Blu-ray in December

Åkte precis förbi min lokala Statoil för att Tanka. Och när jag står där i kön för att betala tittar jag över på filmhyllan och där står Ghostrider på BD och glänser. En film jag egentligen inte hade tänkt köpa men det gjorde jag ändå .

Den lätt tillgängligheten tror jag har mer Impact hos kunder!! än om det är 50Gb vs 30Gb eller Vc1 vs Avc codec.

SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next Announced

Bandai Visual Bandai Visual has announced that they will be bringing 'SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next' to Blu-ray on December 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The 40min feature will come on a BD-25 at 1080p. The soundtrack will be presented in either 5.1 TrueHD or 2.0 PCM (with optional English subtitles). Extras include an audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurette, interviews, trailer, and a 12-page booklet.

Celine Dion Live Extravaganza 'A New Day...' Comes to Blu-ray

Celine is ending her five-year stint in Vegas... and coming to a Blu-ray player near you this December in 'A New Day... Live in Las Vegas.'

On December 15th, Celine will take her final bow on the Colosseum stage at Caesars Palace, capping a sell-out five-year run of her Cirque du Soleil-inspired, multi-octave circus of song and dance "A New Day..." Sony BMG will now bring the show home for the first time only a few days later, debuting day-and-date Blu-ray and standard-def DVD versions on December 11.

"These past five years have been a wonderful experience for me," said Dion in a press release. "To perform every night with such an amazing cast of dancers and musicians on this beautiful show created by Franco Dragone, has been a dream come true."

Sony has not yet released tech specs nor supplement details for 'A New Day...', but the show was captured entirely with multiple HD cameras, so we certainly expect it to look and sound great. We'll keep you posted.

Retail for the Blu-ray is $29.98.

Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer

Following a six month drought, 'Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer' is one of two Fox Blu-ray releases this week (the second is the catalog title, 'The Day After Tomorrow'). Needless to say, expectations are high for the studio's return, but based on this transfer alone, I will revel unapologetically in a cliche and declare that they are back and better than ever. Although I thought the video quality of the original 'Fantastic Four' was pretty good to occasionally great, 'Silver Surfer' is even better -- the movie's visual design, and this transfer are simply superior.

Fox bestows 'Silver Surfer' with a BD-50 dual-layer disc (versus the wimpy BD-25 for 'Fantastic Four'), and presents the film in 2.35:1 widescreen and 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video. The image is uniformly excellent. The source is absolutely pristine, with excellent deep blacks and perky contrast that doesn't go overboard. I found the sequel's cinematography more colorful and eye-popping than the original, and the expansive palette is vividly reproduced here. Primaries are especially vibrant, from the velvety blues of the Fantastic Four's costumes, to the very comic book-like production design that's awash in smooth pinks, greens and oranges. Though hues were a bit fuzzy on the original 'Fantastic Four,' that's not a problem here -- the image is rock solid and free of noise or smearing.

Detail is also a step up. The image is almost always three-dimensional, and even the many wide shots (flush with CGI) retain a sharpness and depth that is among the best high-def I've seen lately. I'm also happy to see that Fox has embraced the AVC MPEG-4 codec on what appears to be most if not all of its freshly-announced Blu-ray titles. Compression is rock solid, with no real artifacts to speak of. The image is also nicely free from any noticeable edge enhancement, for a sharp but smooth look.

I did note a couple of deficiencies that prevent me from giving 'Silver Surfer' a perfect five-star video rating. First off, shadow detail is sometimes flat -- the darkest interior scenes don't hold up, with depth flattening out. I also noticed a bit of noise, and since the source is otherwise largely free of grain, it's doubly distracting. Still, these are minor issues in what is a pretty fantastic return for Fox.

Audio: (DTS-HD MA)

Fox continues to support the DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio format, and we get a very nice 5.1 surround track here at 48kHz/24-bit/6.9mbps. Unfortunately, we are just on the verge of finally being able to upgrade our review system with DTS-HD decoding, so as of this writing I was only able to extract the 1.5mbps DTS "core" from this track. Still, even at a reduced bitrate, 'Rise of the Silver Surfer' still sounds pretty terrific.

Surrounds are wonderfully aggressive, from the seamless imaging as the "trail" of the Human Torch whizzes all around the soundfield, to the nifty metallic vibrations that accompany the arrival of the Silver Surfer. The clarity and depth of discrete sounds are excellent, and sounds are directed to specific channels with excellent accuracy.

Dynamics are also killer, featuring an intense low bass that sent my subwoofer into a near frenzy -- the centerpiece "ferris wheel" rescue scene is destined to be my new favorite piece of demo material. Likewise, general fidelity of the rest of the spectrum has that incredibly clean, distinctly real presence that only the best Hollywood blockbuster can buy. I did find dialogue was sometimes obscured -- the loudest action scenes were overwhelming a bit in the fronts, and some of the male voices (particularly Julian McMahon as Doom, and Laurence Fishburne as the Silver Surfer) felt flat and indistinct. But aside from the minor annoyance of having to reach for my remote's volume control two or three times, I have no complaints.

Reports of people having trouble with the new BD+ copy protection is starting to surface. The movies in question are Fox's Blu-ray releases of "Day After Tomorrow, The" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

BD+ is a extra layer of copy protection. With it, they should be able to change the keys used to unlock it. In short this means that if a BD+ disc is hacked and copied they can change the keys which secures future discs of being copied.

All in all a good idea. However, reports of difficulties playing these BD+ protected Blu-ray releases are starting to surface.

Here is what we know so far:
Samsung players seem to be unable to play the discs but a firmware upgrade should be available or in works. However, some say they will not play on the lates firmware from the company. Panasonic players will play the disc but load times are very high. Again, Playstation 3 seems to be the safest bet when it come to Blu-ray. It should play them without problems.

What could be another major problem is that each time the studio change keys a firmware upgrade may be needed on some players. To make things worse many Blu-ray players doesn't even have a internet connection making firmware upgrades more difficult.

We hope this is not the case. If so, i feel that the Blu-ray camp may have scored a goal in its own net. Copy protection shouldn't make life hard for those that pay hard earned dollars for their legal movies. This in the end may push people into downloading illegal movies. At least here they know that these movies will play.

Sony Confirms Godzilla Blu-ray Release


Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has confirmed that they will bring the 1998 version of 'Godzilla' to Blu-ray on March 28th in a "Monster Edition". Video will be presented in 1080p accompanied by a PCM soundtrack. Extras will include a featurette, a music video by the Wallflowers, and other additional features yet to be announced.

Nej, detta är vad alla tror eftersom BD+ är nytt, fakta är att vissa spelare klarar Day after Tomorrow och andra inte. Silver Surfer använder inte BD+ och vissa spelare hade iaf problem med den, alltså något annat

Uppdateringar kommer hela tiden och varför du försöker sprida skräck i detta fallet vet jag inte, finns inga tidigare händelse what so ever som tyder på att dessa spelare kommer lämnas utanför, upp till Samsung och LG att fixa det, kan Panasonic och Sony så kan även dom...

I have some recent information that the playability problems with TDAT and F4 are not related to BD+, but instead have to do with the Java support on the players in question. The firmware updates should resolve it.

Keith har kommenterat det där, HD PiP var mandatory från början men dom ändrade till SD PiP för att göra det möjligt för billigare spelare och att det inte går att få ut i första svängen på dessa SoC's(det kommer i andra svängen)

Känns som det spelar mindre roll om det är BD+ eller Java som ställer till problem för folk som köpt BD-spelare för ett antal tusenlappar. Klart man förväntar sig att den ska klara av och spela upp alla BD-filmer. Inte så att vanliga svensson börjar tänka i banor att det behövs en uppdaterad firmware för att se på filmen. Detta problemet har ju såklart inte bara Blu-ray utan även HD DVD. Får se vad som händer när 51Gb-skivorna kommer.
