HD DVD has online shopping feature

NEW YORK (AP) — Just watched Evan Almighty? Did its environmental message make you want to buy ecologically sound toilet paper?
Well, now you can get instant gratification — if you watched the movie on an HD DVD player and are willing to give the remote a workout.

The HD DVD of Evan Almighty will be the first disc to include an online shopping feature, Universal Studios announced Wednesday.

The HD DVD camp, which apart from General Electric's Universal includes Viacom's Paramount Pictures, Toshiba and Microsoft, has been touting the online capabilities of Toshiba's players, which all have jacks for broadband Internet connections. By contrast, not all Blu-ray players have Internet connections.

But the HD DVD camp has been slow to take advantage of the Internet. Discs with Internet features, like downloadable trailers and subtitles, only started appearing this summer.

Evan Almighty, to be released Oct. 9, will contain a simple Web browser that connects to Universal's online store, which will be offering products vaguely related to the movie. Previews of the site featured toilet paper made of recycled materials — 12 rolls for $14 — and a rain barrel for $135 (the movie is a retelling of the story of Noah's Ark). The products offered may change by the time the disc goes on sale.

It's uncertain whether consumers will appreciate the shopping opportunity, especially since the transaction has to be completed using the remote. Judging by a demonstration of the technology, entering credit-card information and a home address using the remote and an onscreen keyboard is a slow process. It can be shortened by creating an account in advance on a home computer, then logging into it through the player.

The online shopping feature may not be immediately appealing to consumers, but they are not the only battleground in the HD DVD versus Blu-ray fight. It's also important for each format to woo the studios. The HD DVD camp scored a major victory in August, when it lured Paramount into its fold. The studio had previously issued movies in both formats. With a few exceptions, HD DVD is now its only high-definition format.

The shopping feature on Evan Almighty is not quite what was originally envisioned for HD DVD discs. The original plan was to have little tags pop up while the movie was playing, offering the opportunity to, for instance, add to the shopping cart the sunglasses that an actor was wearing, said Kevin Collins, Microsoft's "director of HD DVD evangelism."

But that looked too much like an endorsement by the actor, something that wasn't included in their contracts, Collins said.

"Our next challenge is to take this to the creative people," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "If they get agreements from the actors at the planning stage, it could be a different thing."

Evan Almighty will be a combination disc, with the HD DVD on one side and a DVD on the other. It will list for $40.

Both Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse should be available in high-definition on HD DVD in Germany soon, despite September 27 being widely-publicised release date. Some online retailers have suggested that these HD DVD titles should be officially in-stock within a week or so... we'll have to see what happens after a week or so.

Det var ju en del släpp i December som lockade tror jag många. Kanske November vet ej vad ni andra säger.

Det finns ju inget som säger att vi inte kan ha ytterligare köpdagar i både nov & dec

För min del denna månad så är Transformers och Face Off aktuellt, men resten av releaserna är inte så intressant tills slutet på nov. Så en köpdag i november kanske skulle passa bättre med fler titlar att välja på.. Gillar inte lägga preorders där pengarna är hos en återförsäljare och man inte fått produkten... för vem betalar egentligen en sak i förskott utan att få det några veckor senare

Bra rabatt av Glenn, men begär vi för många köpdagar kan det resultera i att färre är med på köpdagen, därmed sämre rabatt pågrund av färre köp?

Universal HD DVD in December

Universal Studios Home Video have announced the US HD DVD release of two catalogue titles on 26th December 2007. Paul Schrader’s 1982 fantasy horror Cat People is now back on the schedule and is joined by Timecop starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Retail is $29.98 SRP each.

Paramount Reveals Specs for Zodiac HD DVD

After yanking a bare-bones version of 'Zodiac' from the studio's summer high-def release schedule, Paramount recently rescheduled the HD DVD for a January 8, 2008-- this time as a fully-loaded two-disc special edition. Guided by the hands-on input of legendary perfectionist Fincher, this newly-retooled 'Zodiac' will be the most feature-packed high-def release from Paramount yet, seemingly delivering everything a 'Zodiac' fan could ask for.

Tech specs include 1080p/VC-1 video and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 Surround audio (at 1.5mbps). At presstime, Paramount had not indicated any high-res audio tracks, but we'll keep you posted if any further changes are announced.

Universal Demos "U-Shop" Functionality on 'Evan Almighty' HD DVD

Universal Studio gave reporters a sneak peak at their latest web-enabled innovation on Tuesday.

Called "U-Shop," the upcoming 'Evan Almighty' HD DVD will be the first next-gen title to allow complete online transactions via a customized web browser. (As previously reported, Warner's earlier '300' HD DVD included the ability to send a text message to cellphones with links to purchase ringtones and wallpaper.)

Tying into the environmental theme of 'Evan Almighty,' items for sale via the disc will include a solar radio, a spinning composter, toilet paper made from recycled materials. More traditional film memorabilia (including an 'Evan Almighty' t-shirt) will also be made available.

Universal says it's not viewing the functionality as a new revenue stream, but rather as a demonstration of the format's interactive capabilities.

According to Universal VP (and HD DVD Promo Group Chair) Ken Graffeo, web-enabled features have already proven popular with consumers. Graffeo says that 40% of those who bought the 'Heroes: Season One' HD DVD registered to access the title’s Web offerings.

As we've previously reported, Universal recently launched a companion website for its web-enabled offerings. The studio says consumers will be able to create U-Shop accounts via a normal internet connection, but final product purchases must be made from the HD DVD.

'Evan Almighty' is due to hit HD DVD next Tuesday, October 9th. In addition to the "U-Shop" functionality, the title is also set to include a series of more traditional extras from the standard-def DVD, plus an HD DVD-exclusive picture-in-picture video commentary and two trivia tracks.
