Scott Hettrick Interviews Kazuo Hirai of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.HiHD: Sony and PS3 detractors dismiss Blu-ray is just another proprietary Sony format that will not succeed any better than previous Sony proprietary CE formats dating back to Betamax. HIRAI: In our eyes, we wanted to provide developers with the absolute biggest canvas on which to create their games. We could have gone with the 9 GBs of DVD or the 30 GBs of data on an HD DVD, but why would we, when we had 50 GBs of data on the Blu-ray Disc? I think its success as a delivery vehicle for games has already been proven. As for movies, I think it (is) really hard for any studio or retailer to ignore the fact that there are already millions of Blu-ray players in the world in the form of PS3. That is the kind of installed base DVD only dreamed of when it launched and before we debuted PlayStation®2. HiHD: What are your thoughts on movie downloading options for Xbox 360 vs PS3? HIRAI: Increasingly, consumers are looking for new ways to access and enjoy entertainment. Downloading content from the comfort of your living room is now a true, viable option. PS3 already offers downloadable games and gaming content. We are now reviewing options for other content to be delivered through PLAYSTATION®Network, including music, movies, and TV, all of which can be found in the Sony family of companies. HiHD: What are the primary erroneous points of information/misconceptions out there in blogger-land about PS3 in general and vs Xbox? HIRAI: I have heard many people say our competitors’ systems are just as powerful as PS3. That simply is not true. No other next-generation entertainment system pushes the envelope on advanced technology like PS3. I have heard people say that a high-capacity game delivery vehicle like Blu-ray isn’t necessary in a next-generation computer entertainment system. You just can’t expect that the 9 GBs of storage capacity found on today’s DVDs are going to have enough space to hold tomorrow’s games. Developers have already pushed the DVD to its limits in terms of space used. We had games like ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ coming in 16 GBs at launch. That game simply wouldn’t be possible on any other system without using multiple discs. There is no doubt in my mind that you need more capacity on discs for truly next-generation gaming, and Blu-ray gives us that space. HiHD: What is the long-term viability/future of physical disc media versus online/virtual? HIRAI: The disc is not dead. Far from it. For many years to come there will be a place at the table for disc-based content in the world of entertainment. It is about offering consumers options. Some may like the convenience of downloading a game at home, while others will always want the experience of going to the store and talking to the clerks and other consumers about the games they are interested in. Whichever way a consumer wants to receive their content, we want to have a solution.

Fox Speaks Out on 'Silver Surfer,' 'Day After Tomorrow' Blu-ray Playback ProblemsFri Oct 05, 2007 at 10:00 AM ETFox Home Entertainment acknowledged playback issues with its 'Rise of the Silver Surfer' and 'Day After Tomorrow' discs on select Blu-ray players late Thursday, but layed the blame squarely on the shoulders of hardware manufacturers. As we first reported yesterday, the new BD+ encrypted discs are apparently incompatible with two Blu-ray players (the Samsung BD-1200 and LG's BH100), while delayed load times of up to two minutes have been reported on other players. Although Fox had no comment when we first broke the story yesterday, a studio rep told Video Business that Fox was aware of the problem, but emphasized that it was confined to a limited number of players. Steve Feldstein, Fox senior VP of marketing communications advised that consumers having difficulties should contact manufacturer support lines directly. "We are releasing more and more advanced interactive titles, and consumers should lobby their hardware manufacturers to release firmware upgrades post haste," said Feldstein. Calls placed to both Samsung and LG customer support revealed that both manufacturers are working on firmware updates to correct the problem. Samsung promised a firmware update within "a couple weeks," while LG said an update is expected in 2-3 days. We'll keep you posted on any further developments in this story. In the meantime, we've set up a dedicated thread in our Forums area to discuss playback problems with both the 'Silver Surfer' and 'Day After Tomorrow' discs. Källa: Highdefdigest.com

Så, då har vi både en Sony insider och FOX som talar ut officiellt, kan vi lägga ner BD+ skitsnacket nu? EDIT: En till. Before we get started today, a number of people are reporting problems with 20th Century Fox's new Blu-ray releases, The Day After Tomorrow and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. What we're hearing from our sources is that the problem is related to compatibility issues with the new BD-Java features on the discs, not to BD+ (as is rumored online). The discs are working fine on players from Pioneer, Sony (including the PS3), Panasonic and others, but it's having playback issues on some models from Korean manufacturers Samsung, Philips and LG. The studio tells us, however, that these issues are easily addressable with simple firmware updates. So if you're experiencing a problem, contact your manufacturer to request a firmware update disc or visit their support page online to download the latest firmware (click on the links provided). If an update isn't yet available for your model of player to address this issue, make sure they know you need one. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/

New PLAYSTATION®3 Model to Take Holiday Season by StormAggressively priced hardware and a terrific software line-up make for an unbeatable combination New 40GB PS3 at €399
London, 5 October 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced details of its exciting new PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) model that will launch throughout the SCEE territories on 10th October 2007 at the highly attractive price of €399.
Providing an incredibly appealing entry point to the world of High Definition gaming and entertainment for the holiday season, the new PS3 brings the next generation of interactive home entertainment to homes all across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia.
Along with an ever expanding line-up of PS3 titles (a total of 65 titles tracking across all genres by Christmas), the new PS3 is equipped with a 40GB HDD and includes all the features central to the High Definition entertainment experience; true next generation gameplay, stunning High Definition Blu-ray Disc™ movies, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity, all powered by the Cell Broadband Engine™, the digital heart of PS3.
As with the 60GB PS3, the new PS3 features upgradeable firmware allowing new features and functionality to be added to the system as time progresses. A recent firmware update, for example, enabled PS3 to upscale DVD’s played on the system to full 1080P High Definition.
The introduction of the new PS3 has been determined following user feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners. The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port.
The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).
The existing Starter Pack*, comprising a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility, an additional SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles will be reduced in price to €499. Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3.
“The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners,” said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet incredibly affordable High Definition gaming and entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system.
*In the UK and Ireland, the Starter Pack will be replaced by a separate in-store promotion on the 60GB PS3.

HP offers up HD DVD / Blu-ray drives on select Pavilion desktops
hp.jpg 24,1K
0 Antal nerladdningarJust last month, we heard rumblings that HP may begin offering up two-faced optical drives in its desktops, and sure enough, a variety of select Pavilions are now being served up with HD DVD and / or Blu-ray compatibility. The d4995t, m9000t and m9000z all give users the option of purchasing a vanilla dual-layer DVD burner, an HD DVD / Blu-ray combo player (that also burns DVDs), or a drive that burns Blu-ray / DVD and reads HD DVD. Additionally, a number of lesser-spec'd rigs also provide users the option of picking up an HD combo drive of some sort, and you can even snap up ATI's TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner on the d4995t and m9000t (among others). AppleTV med Blu-ray kanske? The ability to play DVDs (and perhaps Blu-ray DVDs) quickly shot to the top of many gripe lists about the device, and the feature could finally seal the deal for many who are looking to replace their DVD player with a low-profile media center. The rumor site also says a third tier to the Apple TV will appear, with a new starting price dipping down to $249 for a 60 or possibly 80GB drive. The $299 and $399 models could then receive 120-160GB and 200-250GB drives, respectively.

With Blu-ray writing speeds twice that of the original drive, and improved DVD write speeds as well, the drive is a nice successor to Sony's BWU-100a. Free Record Shop Goes Blu-rayPosted October 8, 2007 by JoshFree Record Shop, the Netherlands's largest home entertainment retailer, has announced that they have officially endorsed Blu-ray as the successor to DVD. Since Blu-ray has launched in the Netherlands, it has outsold HD DVD on an average of 4-to-1, showing business owners that the buying public is demanding high definition content, and they want that content on Blu-ray. källa: http://www.blu-ray.com/- Känns inte som hddvd har europa marknaden längre

Another company joins le blu "BestDisc, an independent DVD manufacturer in Asia, recently opened a new facility in Taiwan focusing on BD-ROM, both single and dual layer, and equipped with quality control systems from DaTARIUS. Mastering , galvanic and replication lines were installed and optimized earlier this year and, to help control and fine-tune their manufacturing process, BestDisc has chosen the DaTABANK solution equipped with a BD driveCube, along with the CoverTest stamper testing technology developed by DaTARIUS. "For us, taking the lead in high definition media was a strategic decision," says Mr. Sam Yang, the Vice President of BestDisc. "Although BD is not yet on the weekly shopping list for consumers worldwide, the market penetration improves virtually on a daily basis, and we are confident that BD will lead high definition optical media." "In order to make our manufacturing process run more smoothly, we have selected what we believe to be the most experienced and reliable partner in DaTARIUS. Their solution for stamper and disc testing has proved to give us the best correlation between stamper and disc measurements. In addition to delivering reference measurements, the built-in tools such as statistic analysis and remote monitoring are ideally suited to our QC needs." BestDisc BD discs passed the quality verification by Sony?s Blue-ray Test Centre in early September. " källa : http://www.cdrinfo.c...px?NewsId=21572

Exclusive Interview: Richard J. Casey. Executive Producer R&B Films, Ltd.1. Are there any specific sales goals you have set for Nature’s Journey (NJ) for each hi-def format? When we released CHRONOS in both HD and BD formats, we really had no idea how many we would sell. As it happens, we sold a bit more than I projected on that title. Based on the Sales History of CHRONOS, we would project similar sales results for NATURE’S JOURNEY. To be specific, we expect to see approximately 20,000 units in HD/BD within the first year. This projection is for North America only and does not include any Bundling Deals or Promotions, which I do foresee for this release. I expect NATURE’S JOURNEY should do well for its unique entertainment value. However, I also see it doing well based on it being a “must have” reference quality showcase presentation that delivers the ultimate High Definition experience. In addition to pleasing home theater enthusiasts, NATURE’S JOURNEY is a perfect demo disc for selling HDTV Sets and HD / BD Players on the retail showroom floor. The Super Bit Rate Video & Audio Encodes we used for this title show off the true potential of current High Definition equipment and technology. In addition, we utilized our proprietary DRS strategy which outlines the best procedures, protocols, and practices for maintaining audio and video quality transparent to the source. We truly pushed the maximum limit of both formats with a 26mbps VC-1 Video Encode and a 96/24 DTS-HD Soundtrack for the HD-DVD and a 37Mbps VC-1 Video Encode and 96/24 DTS-HD-MA Soundtrack on the Blu-ray Disc release. But even a viewer who knows and cares nothing about specs will enjoy the fascinating content with its gorgeous, rich, colorful, and highly detailed images and superb original score in ultra high resolution surround sound. Nature’s Journey is the Ultimate Demo disc for demonstrating HD / BD and HDTV equipment to non-believers and those who have not yet made the commitment to High Definition in their home. Nature’s Journey truly represents how High Definition should look. Resten av intervjun här...

4. Do you favor using a specific HD format for encoding? If so, why?As a Studio, we are format neutral. We have no vested interest in either format or any of the related technologies. In addition, we do not own any interest in the IP Rights, Patents, or Licensing related to any these formats or technologies. We are in the content business. With that said, both formats are capable of great performance given their current limitations, such as the inability to play 7.1 Surround at 192/24. However, as a Producer, I always prefer to have more bandwidth and space on the disc than less. All of our HD / BD releases feature Super Bit DTS-HD and when we have the bandwidth available, DTS-HD Master Audio Lossless. -- Givet svar :-)

Optiarc rolls out Blu-ray drive for "mid-range" laptops Optiarc (the joint venture between Sony and NEC) has already pumped out quite a few Blu-ray drives for both desktops and laptops, and it's now let loose yet another model, with this one promising to make Blu-ray accessible to "mid-range" laptop models. That accessibility comes at the expense of Blu-ray burning, although the drive (dubbed the BC-5500A) will burn CDs or DVDs at speeds ranging from 8x to 16x depending on the format. If that's not too much of a compromise for you, you should be able to grab one around $335 right now -- or, more likely, wait for some laptop manufacturers to start offering 'em as a standard option.
