HD DVD moves forward with recorders, 51GB disc“When you playback, you’ll get the full resolution in high-def,” said Mark Knox, Toshiba technology adviser, during the Forum’s conference on Tuesday. “But [the disc] might be able to only hold one hour. You can’t store as much, but you’ll have cheap content on cheap discs. This is a whole new category of product.”
Knox also reiterated that the Forum is nearing finalization of a triple-layer 51GB disc specification. If produced, these discs each holding 17GB capacity per layer, would boost the format’s competitiveness against Blu-ray Disc, which has already released numerous 50GB titles. To date, HD DVD titles are in 15GB and 30GB configurations.http://www.videobusi.../CA6490435.html

HD-DVD players outsell Blu-ray players 4 to 1. ( with love from uncle D ) According to the latest statistics on Amazon, HD-DVD is absolutely crushing Blu-ray to the tune of 4 to 1. Out of the top 20 " most popular items in DVD Players and Recorders" HD-DVD occupies 4 different slots, including the #1 slot. On the Blu-Ray side things are not looking so good with only 1 slot and it sits at #20http://www.hdgamenew...ay-players.html

NBC Universal säljas efter OS?"The fate of NBC Universal, General Electric’s entertainment unit, will be decided only after the Beijing Olympics, with executives at the US conglomerate ruling out a sale before August’s showcase event, according to people close to the situation. NBC, whose value is estimated at about $40bn, has been the subject of repeated sale rumours because of its lagging performance and the awkward fit with the rest of GE’s industrial and financial businesses." http://www.ft.com/cm...00779fd2ac.html

I like very much Toshiba HDA2-W $198.00 at
walmart.jpg 16,24K
0 Antal nerladdningarhttp://forums.highde...ead.php?t=21334I am an associate for WalMart and yesterday I did a RollBack for the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. It went from $298.00 to $198.00. The players should be available in store within the week as the layouts for electronics are changing as of 10/15. Just thought I give you folks a heads up http://www.avsforum....t=922556&page=2Yes, I JUST did a few hours ago at my local Wal-Mart. I saw it yesterday at $298 and today it was $198 (may have had some change after it, not sure). Before yesterday I had never seen at A2 at this store before...and boom, there it is. Not sure if it was a new shipment or they just 'found' them in the back, but the one and only A2 sold at my Wal-Mart to some random guy. No Blu-ray players at all, no other HD DVD players, and no HD/BR movies, lol.
Remember, each Wal-Mart has to be taken as a YMMV in terms of deals. Sometimes corporate will change the price, and sometimes its up to the managers to clear inventory. The price was NOT marked anywhere on the shelves, I simply saw the A2 as I was walking into the department with $198 being rung up. Another Wal-Mart of mine has the Blu-ray BDP-300 for $366 on clearance while another has the same unit for $499.99. Its all up to the individual stores to set certain prices.
I can confirm this. Went back to work today and a new Toshiba UPC popped up in my system:
Toshiba HDA2-W $198.00
Wal Mart item number: 564786/570634
Now I work in a store in the woods of east Texas that usually doesnt receive higher end merchandise. I find the two different item numbers kind of odd. The numbers are cross referenced so the onhands/orders/units sold will always be the same. But usually two numbers are cross referenced if they the same basic item with a different model number or some sort of "free" offer with one of them.
Another observation: I am receiving 3 tonight with 14 more on order for my store. Some promo is obviously coming down the pipe since this item is not on my new modular update for DVD players due this week.

Is it HD DVD or HD-DVD? Glad you asked. Seems like there's a bit of confusion there, so let's clear it up. There is no hyphen. Never was, never will be. Just HD DVD. Simple, clean and, well, it just looks a lot better.

Island Fever 4 to Burn On HD DVD One-time Blu-ray backer Digital Playground will release the film next week. A year ago, Digital Playground was all set to back Blu-ray with a slew of releases. However, Joone and other adult executives turned sour on the Sony-supported format when Sony-led production facilities offered little help in the replication process. Sony denied that it was stiffing the adult industry, but the message came through. Consequently, several adult studios said they would back HD DVD by default. Joone was quoted earlier this year as saying he would support the HD DVD format because it "was the only one available." For those keeping score, Island Fever 4 was awarded the AVN 2007 "Best All-Girl Sex Scene." http://www.tvpredict...sland101607.htm

Hello boys...n girls Sony & Blu-ray Lose Exclusive JB Hi-Fi DealBy SmartHouse Team | Wednesday | 17/10/2007
Sony and Blu-ray have lost their exclusivity in JBHi-Fi stores with the announcement that effective from November, the major retailer will start selling HD DVD players and content. The big winner is Toshiba, with JB Hi-Fi Marketing Director Scott Browning conceding that it was the exclusive Paramount content deal with HD DVD that swung him over to the HD DVD format. Back in February this year at the launch of the Blu-ray Disc Working Group, Browning said that JB Hi-Fi would only sell Blu-ray hardware and software because of the strength of the format.
But in an interview with SmartHouse today Browning said, "We have come to the conclusion that cutting the consumer out of a HD DVD opportunity was not right, as content is critical and the move by Paramount to support HD DVD exclusively influenced our decision. In addition, Toshiba is a strong brand and we are currently selling their computer products, and will next year be selling their LCD TVs."
He added, "The dropping of the entry-level price to a HD DVD player late last week by Toshiba was not a key part of our decision. We are focused on 1080p and the HD DVD offering from Toshiba will complement our existing customer offering. Toshiba have done a great job in expanding their CE range and we look forward to working with their team."
But Toshiba says the recent price cut on its HD DVD players ($499 for the entry-level model) coupled with upcoming marketing campaigns for new release HD DVD titles puts the format in good stead.
Toshiba ISD General Manager Mark Whittard and HD DVD Consortium spokesperson said, "In Australia, Toshiba launched its AV business in July this year, including the full HD DVD player line-up, together with the local formation of the HD DVD Consortium.
"Since then, HD DVD has experienced many milestone successes, such as Paramount's move to join Universal in exclusively producing HD DVD films, and now JB Hi-Fi's decision to sell HD DVD hardware and software. The HD DVD Consortium is excited that this latest announcement adds to HD DVD's momentum and market share gain."
Retailer JB Hi-Fi previously stocked the full line of Toshiba notebooks including HD DVD models, and now its range of HD DVD products extends to include Toshiba HD DVD players and HD DVD software from Paramount Home Entertainment, DreamWorks, Warner Home Video and Universal Pictures.
HD DVD titles to become available over summer include box office hits Transformers, Bourne Ultimatum and Shrek the Third - all exclusive to the HD format. Christmas will also see the availability of Harry Potter, and TV series Heroes Season 1 and Star Trek – The Original Series.
Globally, Toshiba claims HD DVD sales are strong with United States showing 54% of all stand-alone HD player purchases are in the HD DVD format (NPD) and in Europe, HD DVD has 69% market share (GfK). JB Hi-Fi will only stock Blu-ray titles and players http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JB_Hi-Fi

Det påstår iaf chefer: http://www.smarthous...C6X4A7H5?page=3"Said Browning" The fact that movie houses like Paramount are behind the HD DVD format along with the like of DreamWorks is key. I believe that more content providers will get behind the format and that the likes of Microsoft who are big supporters of the HD DVD format will bring out an Xbox with a built in HD DVD player. This is a given he said". "Toshiba is a great Company and next year we look forward to working with them across computing, HD DVD and their LCD TV offerings". He concluded."

RumorToshiba Working With Microsoft On New Entertainment Xbox
By David Richards | Friday | 19/10/2007
Microsoft, according to insiders at Toshiba owner of the HD DVD patents, claim that Microsoft is working on a brand new Xbox that will incorporate not only a new HD DVD drive but a large hard drive and new entertainment software that is a spin off from its struggling media centre offering. The device is being developed in response to the PS3 driving sales of games software and Blu-ray content in several countries. A recent Sony Brand Wave study conducted in five countries including the UK, Australia, France Germany and Spain revealed that a key reason that consumers are buying a PS3 is because it includes a Blu-ray player.
Recent GFK research reveals that the recently launched Xbox 360 HD DVD attach player is not selling well. Another factor that impacted early sales of the Xbox 360 was that Microsoft failed to include a HDMI port - omitted because Microsoft wanted to cut down the costs of the console in an effort to compete up against the PS3.
The new Xbox device, while allowing for extensive gaming capability, will be positioned as an entertainment hub that includes gaming and extensive wireless networking capability as well as 1080p playback. There is also talk of it including a dual HD TV tuner and EPG capability and a docking port for an MP3 player. For Toshiba, the device is critical if it is to be successful in beating Sony and the Blu-ray promoters.
Also being discussed is the development of an open standard docking port similar to the 17 pin iPod port. This would allow all manufacturers to use the same port for docking.
A senior Toshiba executive in Singapore told SmartHouse that "An Xbox with a built in HD DVD drive is critical. They and we are working on it. It also has to be more than a gaming machine. Microsoft recognise this. A version of the device may also be sold under the Toshiba brand name".
Scott Browning, the Marketing Director of JB HiFi Australia's second largest consumer electronics retailer said, "The device is a lay down mis`ere and essential for the HD DVD camp. We are told that one is coming. The PS3 has been extremely successful for Sony in getting Blu-ray off the ground and for Microsoft, the omission of a built in HD DVD player is set to hurt sales going forward as consumers are aware that the PS3 comes with a Blu-ray player."
Both Toshiba and Microsoft have also explored the possibility of a new open standard chassis system that allows an Xbox to be slotted into a HD TV screen over 40-inch. The open standard bays will allow hard drives to be upgraded and expanded similar to the way that users can upgrade the hard drive on a PC.
Another big problem for Microsoft according to insiders is getting the heat and noise output from the current Xbox 360 under control so that the new device can run silently while a movie is being played. It is known that Toshiba has been working with Microsoft on this issue as it has extensive experience in notebooks and "quiet" drives. Currently most iPods incorporate a Toshiba drive.
Another benefit for Microsoft in moving to a new Xbox platform is that it can introduce new components that are less likely to fail. Currently the PS3 has a failure rate of under two percent. Recently Microsoft was forced to allow for a $1.3 billion charge against warranty claims following reports of up to a 30 percent failure rate of the original Xbox 360.
The new device is expected to be released late in 2008 or at the 2009 CES show in Las Vegas.

Som jag skrev innan Rumorclaim that Microsoft is working on a brand new Xbox that will incorporate not only a new HD DVD drive but a large hard drive and new entertainment software that is a spin off from its struggling media centre offering.
Another benefit for Microsoft in moving to a new Xbox platform is that it can introduce new components that are less likely to fail
Det handlar om new platform.

As with Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy HD DVDs, The Bourne Ultimatum HD DVD will contain Universal Studios' HD DVD-exclusive U-Control interactivity. At this moment in time, we are able to confirm that the U-Control interactivity package for this title also includes picture-in-picture instant access to video featurettes/commentary.
Also look out for the web-enabled features on the HD DVD, such as sharing of favorite scenes on The Bourne Ultimatum HD DVD with buddies on your pre-defined buddy list via Best Buddies/My Scenes. Other movie-related downloadable content could also be expected. Just click on the screenshot to get a better view.

AVS http://www.avsforum....58&postcount=36How the votes break down...
First of all, a list of the DVD Forum Steering Committee members, with notes as those who are in the BDA. The BDA BOD's I assume are voting members and contributors just get to throw out ideas when it pleases the BOD and possibly share in the patent portfolio (by getting their patents added to the mix).
Hitachi (BDA Board of Directors) IBM ITRI Intel LG (BDA Board of Directors) Microsoft Mitsubishi (BDA Board of Directors) NEC (BDA Contributor) Panasonic (BDA Board of Directors) Pioneer (BDA Board of Directors) Philips (BDA Board of Directors) Samsung (BDA Board of Directors) Sanyo Sharp (BDA Board of Directors) Sony (BDA Board of Directors) Thomson (BDA Board of Directors) Toshiba JVC (BDA Contributor) Disney (BDA Board of Directors) Warner (BDA Board of Directors)
10 out of 20 DVD Forum mebers are on the BDA Board of Directors, 2 more are Contributors. Granted, a few of those haven't ever been hostile members of the BDA (hostile like Sony, etc) - Warner for example is relatively neutral, arguably in favor of HD DVD. LG, NEC, Thomson, and Warner voted *yes* for every thing on the agenda, and they're all "in the BDA camp." Samsung and Hitachi abstained a few times, but otherwise voted Yes.
Only Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Sony, JVC, and Disney ever voted no for anything. They ALL voted no to the modification to section 4.10 of the MOU with the CSC. I'm guessing it has to do with royalties at this point, and they don't want to loose their cut.
Alright, here's the breakdown...
HD DVD-RW Drive Test Specification, Version 1.0: Yes: Hitachi, IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Samsung, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Disney, Warner No: (none) Abstain: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Sony, JVC = 13-0-7
Modification of Section 4.10 of the MOU requested by CSC: Yes: IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Samsung, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Warner No: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Sony, JVC, Disney Abstain: Hitachi = 11-8-1
Optional Specifications for HD DVD-ROM Physical Specifications Version 1.2 : Triple Layer Twin Format, Revision 1.0: Yes: IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Samsung, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Disney, Warner No: (none) Abstain: Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Sony, JVC = 12-0-8
DVD Specifications for High Density Read-Only Disc [HD DVD (51G)] Part 1 Physical Specifications, Version 1.9: Yes: IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Disney, Warner No: (none) Abstain: Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, JVC = 11-0-9
DVD Download Blank Disc Test Specification, Version 1.0 Yes: All No: (none) Abstain: (none) = 20-0-0
DVD Download Disc Writer Test Specification, Version 1.0 Yes: All No: (none) Abstain: (none) = 20-0-0
HD DVD & DVD Non-Mandatory Verification Tools Requirements & Guidelines, Version 1.0: Yes: Hitachi, IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Samsung, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Disney, Warner No: (none) Abstain: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Sony, JVC = 13-0-7
Logo/Mark for HD DVD Format on Red-Laser Recordable Disc: Yes: IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Samsung, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, JVC, Warner No: (none) Abstain: Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Sony, Disney = 12-0-8
Post OMNERC Presentation CSC vote (more MOU changes, voting to have CSC work on licensing stuff, etc): Yes: Hitachi, IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Warner No: Sony Abstain: Mitsubshi, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, JVC, Disney = 13-1-6
China format related issues (standard content and HD DVD filesystem): Yes: IBM, ITRI, Intel, LG, Microsoft, NEC, Sanyo, Thomson, Toshiba, Disney, Warner No: Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, JVC Abstain: Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Philips, Samsung, Sharp = 11-4-5
You can see how close these votes can be, when many of the Forum members have an agenda elsewhere. Obviously, not all the BDA members are voting with an agenda, merely abstaining. Abstaining used to be the same as a no vote effectively, but they changed that way back because the abstainers were preventing ANYTHING from getting done. Abstaining could mean you don't whole heartedly approve, but you don't approve, but back then it could also be used as a backhanded "no."

Microsoft set to sweeten HD-DVD deal with Heroes?Rumours from across the Atlantic suggest Microsoft could be set to package the first season of hit U.S. show Heroes with its HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360. Leaked scans of a pamphlet promoting the deal at Best Buy have as good as confirmed the story, with Microsoft continuing to push Toshiba's format in its fight against Sony's Blu-ray. Microsoft already offers numerous packages for its HD-DVD drive, including several free movies and TV series. Other rumours also state that Microsoft and Toshiba are currently working on an HD-DVD 'entertainment based' 360, set for launch either late next year or early 2009.

Microsoft planning new Xbox 360 with built-in HD DVD drive 22 October 2007 8:47 GMT - Toshiba executives have revealed that Microsoft is planning a new version of the Xbox 360 gaming console to try and beat Sony PlayStation 3. The new model is to offer a built-in HD DVD drive, a "large" hard drive and new entertainment software, the sources say. Microsoft currently offers an external, add-on HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 but sales have apparently not been strong for this product. A new console with an internal HD DVD drive would provide stronger next-gen competition against Sony's PS3 which includes a Blu-ray player. "An Xbox with a built-in HD DVD drive is critical," a senior Toshiba executive said. "They and we are working on it. It also has to be more than a gaming machine. Microsoft recognize this. A version of the device may also be sold under the Toshiba brand name." Other plans for the new device could include dual TV tuners, a docking station for MP3 players, and the possibility to make the console designed to slot into HD TV screens over 40-inches. The sources indicated that an Xbox 360 with HD DVD is expected to launch in late 2008, or in time for the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Gorgeous-sounding entertainment laptop is the high-def king"The Qosmio G45-AV680 has more high-definition components than any other notebook, and HD fllowers will love the higher-quality entertainment this model affords." "Toshiba tweaked the 17-inch 1920-by-1200-pixel screen, as well; it's capable of displaying full 1080p HD content from a disc playing on the HD drive. The G45-AV680 can also play that content on an attached HDTV or HD monitor in full HD 1080p mode."

Free 'Heroes' HD DVD Bundled With Xbox 360 Add-OnUniversal and Microsoft have teamed up to offer the 'Heroes: Season One' HD DVD box set free with sales of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on. The promo kicked off yesterday and is set to run for 1-2 weeks at select retailers. (So far, it has been spotted at Buy.com and at Best Buy.) ADVERTISEMENT Combined with Microsoft's existing "Five Free Discs" offer and the free in-box 'King Kong' HD DVD (on select models), this latest incentive brings the value of all bundled HD DVD discs included with the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on to roughly $220 -- that's forty dollars more than the total list price for the add-on itself. http://www.highdefdi...360_Add-On/1092vi får väl se om nåt liknande kommer hit..

Mer angående Xbox HD DVD sku. http://www.cnbc.com/id/21423304"At the same time, back at the Digital Life Expo, we detailed how HD-DVD was outselling Blu-Ray on laptops by better than 8-1. It stands to reason that laptop users who have onboard HD-DVD would also want that same format at home."
