THANKS, HANKS
The American mini-series The Pacific has been a major contributor to a surge in TV drama being made in Australia.
An annual survey by Screen Australia, published yesterday, shows makers of the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks World War II epic spent a hefty $134 million when it was shot in Victoria and Queensland last financial year.

FAN!!!
"Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg’s “The Pacific” unfortunately will not be out until next year. When you mention their previous HBO war miniseries, the magnificent “Band of Brothers,” and then mention “The Pacific” to those who work at HBO, you get this pensive and hesitant expression. It’s not that they don’t think “The Pacific” is as good (at least one HBO person described the rough cuts as amazing), it’s just the Pacific Theatre was a very different front, with brutal atrocities being committed on both sides (see James Bradley’s excellent and disturbing book “Flyboys,” which makes the author’s better-known “Flags of Our Fathers” seem like a sixth grader’s essay on WWII). “Brothers” also benefited from a wider range of dramatic settings. In other words, HBO senses “The Pacific” may be a tougher sell than the original regardless of its quality. On the upside, one episode is supposedly one extensive battle from start to finish, a small-screen attempt at taking on the opening of “Saving Private Ryan.”

...On The Pacific War, his HBO series that's a spiritual sequel to Band of Brothers, Hanks said, "That's having its score finalised. I think it's going to be March 2010. We are able to visit the home front on this one and we're able to show the guys before the War and after. We show some of the most vicious stuff I've ever seen on film - because it has to be."

"A new version of the trailer has been released despite containing mostly the same scenes as the previous version. The difference is that the new trailer contains a different soundtrack. Could this be the actual music from the film’s soundtrack?"

Spielberg & Hanks' The Pacific Comes To Sky Movies
Sky Movies has announced it will be the UK home of the Band of Brothers companion piece, The Pacific, premiering in the Spring of 2010.
Where Band of Brothers depicted the European Theatre of Operations in WW2, The Pacific looks to the Far East, and the fierce jungle fighting against the Imperial Japanese Empire.
Ian Lewis, Director of Sky Movies, said: ‘We were blown away when we saw the previews of the series - the cinematography and effects are pure Hollywood. It seemed only natural that a premium production such as this should live on Sky Movies, where it can be viewed as the director intended – in HD and with no ad breaks.”
TV series now routinely give blockbuster movies a run for their box office in terms of scale and excitement: Band of Brothers fans know it is not Saving Private Ryan-lite.
And The Pacific's production history is closer to a summer tentpole movie than a regular TV series. Again overseen by BOB's producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, running for 10 episodes and made at a cost of $200 million, The Pacific is shot on location in Australia in stunning High Definition.
Sophie Turner Laing, Sky’s Managing Director of Entertainment, commented, "At a time when some broadcasters are reducing their on-screen spend, we continue to invest in content which rewards our customers and creates more reasons to join Sky.”
The series track the odysseys of three U.S. Marines –Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone – across the vast canvas of the Pacific. The experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.
Sky Movies will be airing The Pacific in the UK at the same time as the series shows in the US. Check back over the next few weeks for updates on what looks like the TV event of 2010.
