Du snackar i nattmössan, anledningen till att många BD filmer bara fick DD har inte med BD som format att göra, DD+ finns i specsen, men inte mandatory.
Det finns massor av utrymme och bandbredd över att slänga på ett PCM spår istället, hur kan BD som ett format stå till svars för hur filmbolag behandlar det?

Blades of Glory fick PCM och Transformers hade med största sannolikhet fått det också, det säger sig självt...

ja vet väl att det får plats PCM och att det inte är BD:s fel,
men just som du säger det är inte mandatory i spelarna det är det
på HDDVD..därför HDDVD fått bättre ljud hela tiden
och dessutom behövs inte PCM på alla jäkla titlar
en del av BD:s hype, de flesta hör inte skillnaden ändå..

Min kommentar om det tekniska innefattar givetvis Pip o allt det,
som kommer på HDDVD.s transformers och inte kunde kommit på BD.s..

Varför hade inte PiP kunnat komma på BD versionen av transformers? Profile 1 spelare är på G och Keith Jack(sigma) har även hintat lite om att dom nya "1.0" spelarna bygger på nya "SoC's" med PiP funktionen, men dom slutgiltiga testerna påbörjas inte/är inte klara förs nästa månad, därav vill dom inte utannonsera funktionen än.

Maxell backs Blu-ray for camcorder market

Blu-ray received an enormous boost when the data storage firm Maxell announced that it will begin shipping 8cm Blu-ray BD-R (write-once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs for the high-definition camcorder market.

Maxell's discs work on any of the latest Blu-ray camcorders, letting you store one hour of full high-definition picture quality at a whopping resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Not only are the discs great for storing high-definition film, but they also feature a unique hard coat technology that prevents scratches, fingerprints and other debris.

Don Patrican, vice president of sales and marketing at Maxell Corporation of America excitedly stated, "As people see their home movies with richer texture, images and sound as a result of HD technologies available on the market, they will not turn back."

Furthermore, he went on to state how this addition of Blu-ray will affect the media for camcorders:

"With this latest addition of recordable Blu-ray media for camcorders, our category expertise allows us to help our customers navigate the latest HD technologies ensuring they have the right products at retail stores."

Lionsgate has acquired renowned independent production and distribution company Mandate Pictures, the two companies announced today. The acquisition returns entrepreneurial motion picture executive Joe Drake to the Lionsgate family as Co-Chief Operating Officer and President of Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group, with oversight of all areas of the Company's theatrical production, distribution, marketing, acquisition and international theatrical operations. Drake will continue as CEO of Mandate.

In the six years since Drake left his position as head of Lionsgate's international distribution division, he founded Mandate and, with partners Nathan Kahane and Brian Goldsmith, built it into a worldwide powerhouse responsible for projects such as: Marc Forster's Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell; Zach Helm's upcoming magical family film Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, starring Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman; Jason Reitman's Juno, starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera, which launched at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend; and Harold & Kumar 2, Mandate's follow-up to its 2004 comedy hit.

Through Ghost House Pictures, Mandate's joint venture with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the company has produced four #1 box office releases in a row, including the smash box office hits The Grudge, Boogeyman, The Grudge 2 and The Messengers, and it will release the highly-anticipated film adaptation of the ground-breaking graphic novel 30 Days of Night this fall.

Unrated Editions; Choice of Audio; Pricing Issues

In trying to address as many questions and issues as possible here at this site, I have been able to get some feedback on three topics about which I have seen more than one question and comment at this site and in other forums, mostly related to Fox and most of these responses come from people I have talked with at Fox:

* Choice of audio codecs:
-- There are numerous factors that go into deciding what audio codecs to use on each and every disc. There is no fixed standard.
Fox execs tell me they are using DTS-HD MA due to the strong value proposition it provides both consumers with existing audio equipment and consumers who will purchase new audio equipment.
Here is their explanation: Every DTS-HD MA stream is layered - it consists of an embedded DTS Digital Surround stream and lossless audio information is built on- top of this embedded DTS Digital Surround stream. DTS-HD utilizes this layered scheme to provide the highest quality available for consumers with existing A/V receivers.
DTS-HD MA streams deliver DTS Digital Surround at 1.5Mbps for existing A/V receivers - more than twice the data rate available with other audio codecs supported on existing A/V receivers. This results in an immediate improvement in sound quality for consumers with existing A/ V receivers (any existing A/V receiver with DTS decoding can play back DTS Digital Surround at 1.5Mbps).
With new audio equipment, DTS-HD MA provides audio that is identical to the Studio Master.
While support for DTS-HD MA is not widespread today, it is believed that the situation will be short-term for the following reasons:
-- Several Blu-ray players will be launched in the near future that support decoding of DTS-HD MA and/or bitstream output of DTS-HD MA to A/V receivers via the HDMI V1.3 standard.
-- Firmware updates will be made available for some Blu-ray Players to provide DTS-HD MA support.
-- Several A/V receivers will be launched in the near future that support decoding of DTS-HD MA.


* No unrated version of "Live Free or Die Hard" on Blu-ray Nov. 20.
-- Simple official answer: couldn't get the hi-def transfer of the unrated version done in time. The unrated version wasn't ready until well after the theatrical version was complete, and mastering the new edition in hi-def is a much more time-consuming and costly process than a standard-def DVD.
The good news: Although sometimes even the bonus features cannot be completed in time for the DVD and/or hi-def release, fortunately that is not the case with "Live Free or Die Hard." Those additional elements were able to be developed while the movie was still in theaters. For instance, in addition to the numerous bonus features from both DVD versions, the Blu-ray of "Live Free" (which is authored in BD-J with AVC compression and presented on 50 GB dual-layer disc with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master), will include a BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!,” D-Box motion sensor capabilities, and several hi-def trailers.

* Higher pricing on Blu-ray Discs:
-- Simple answer: Each studio sets their own pricing and is prohibited from discussing pricing at all or risk violating very stringent laws relative to collusion amongst multiple studios.
I can only say this much: certainly consumers would like hi-def prices to be the same as DVD prices. That isn't going to happen for two reasons. First, it costs more to master and manufacture hi-def discs, so consumers have to pay that extra cost. Second, the primary reason companies are motivated to create new technologies is to make more money and make better profit margins on each product. Therefore, they are not going to go to the cost and trouble to research and develop a new product and then sell it for the same price they are selling current DVDs. They get nothing out of that.
Having said that, there is a legitimate question as to why some Blu-ray titles like Disney's "Cars," which is loaded with additional bonus features exclusive to Blu-ray, is only $5 more than the DVD version (Disney's DVD titles tend to be priced higher than most other studios), and other titles, such as many upcoming from Fox, are $10 more than the DVD version, with or without additional bonus features. The prime example of the disparity I have seen so far is Sony's Blu-ray version of "Spider-Man 3," which is priced $13 higher than the DVD version and offers nothng additional from the DVD.
Like all of you, I am still waiting for a valid explanation about those pricing differences, but I don't expect to get one other than it is simply a difference in business strategies by each studio.

The ¥200,000 (about $1,755) top-end BDZ-X90 model brings 2x digital and 2x analog tuners, gold-plated HDMI 1080p capable of 60fps or 24fps output in DeepColor, and a DLNA-based "Sony Room Link" server function for streaming your media around the house. All use MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoding with support for lossless TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and hi-definition bitstream output. Hell, they even include support for attached AVCHD camcorders. Damn. Sony introducerar nu Blu-ray som standardformat för högupplöst TV, film och video i flera av sina Vaio-modeller och gör därmed HD-tekniken tillgängligt för även den vanliga konsumenten.
Med de nya modellerna går det både att titta på HD-filmer, spela in HDTV och redigera HD-inspelningar – allt i samma bärbara VAIO-dator.

Sonys VAIO-modeller FZ20 och AR50 är utrustade antingen med en inbyggd kombinerad in- och avspelningsenhet för Blu-ray (BD ROM/ DVD+-RW/+-R DL/RAM) eller en Blu-ray spelare (BD-R/-RE/-ROM/ DVD+-RW/+-R DL/RAM). Därmed är de helt klara för äkta HD, dvs 1080p-standarden.

– Vi vill göra vägen in i HD-världen lätt, säger Weronica Lium som är nordisk produktchef på Sony. Man ska åtminstone kunna se HD-filmer hemma. Och vill man gå vidare finns det flera VAIO-modeller som klarar av att redigera material från exempelvis HD-videokameror. Det är enkelt med inspelningar lagrade på Blu-ray-skivor, som förutom den stora lagringskapaciteten också har ett snabbt växande utbud av spelfilmer i HD-format. Kort sagt vi tror att Blu-ray är nyckeln till HD både i dag och i framtiden.

Bäst i HD-klassen: VAIO AR50-serien
Längst fram i HD-racet ligger utan tvekan VAIO AR50-serien. Flaggskeppet är VGN-AR51SU med vilken man både kan titta på Blu-ray-inspelade filmer i full HD på den stora 17-tums LCD-skärmen och även redigera egna HD-inspelningar och spara dem på tvåskikts Blu-ray-skivor på 50 GB. Skärmen är en X-black LCD i bredbildsformat som klarar äkta HD (1080p) och är utrustad med dubbla belysningar. En digital/analog TV-tuner är dessutom intregrerad i datorn som levereras komplett med fjärrkontroll. Modellerna i AR50-serien baseras på den senaste Intel Centrino Duo-processorn och NVIDIA GeForce-grafik.

VAIO FZ20-skärmen är en kombination av X-black LCD och den backlight-teknik som också används i Sonys prisbelönta TV-serie BRAVIA. Target Doubles Shelf Space for Blu-ray; HD DVD Levels Unchanged



The nation's second largest retailer has quietly doubled its shelf space for Blu-ray, while retaining previous levels for HD DVD.

According to an article published today by Video Business, industry sources began noting the change over the last several weeks.

Although the retailer had previously stocked an equal number of HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, spotchecks at several Southern California stores (and one in Philadelphia) indicated that while the Blu-ray sections had at least doubled in size, the HD DVD sections remained the same.

As we've previously reported, back in July it was announced that Target and Sony had signed an agreement that will bring Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray player to Target stores nationwide for the holiday season, with Sony reportedly paying a fee for aisle displays featuring both the players and Blu-ray discs.

At the time, the retailer emphasized that it has not chosen sides in the high-def format war, and would continue to carry software on both formats.

Target had no comment in response to today's Video Business story, but BDA chairman Andy Parsons trumpted the move.

"You’re going to get a clear message when you see more Blu-ray than HD DVD, and you’re going to think something is up," said Parsons. "The message to the consumer is that one of these [formats] is dominating. You’ll go with the masses and pick titles from the one that is likely to win."

For their part, HD DVD supporters minimized the impact of Target's decision, attributing it to Blu-ray's current sales lead.

"For a retailer to make a decision on shelving, it’s a very flexible decision," Alan Bell, CTO at Paramount Pictures told Video Business. "Retail might be shifting inventory around, but at some point, there could be diminishing returns."

Sony may sell game chip facility to Toshiba: sources
TOKYO (Reuters)

Japan's Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is in talks to sell its production facilities for advanced microchips used in its PlayStation 3 game console to Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research), sources close to the matter said.

The sale, which would include production lines for the "Cell" microchips, dubbed "supercomputer on a chip", is part of Sony's strategy to shed costly semiconductor assets and focus on the production of strategic products such as image sensor chips used in digital cameras and camcorders, they said.

The business daily Nikkei said on Saturday Sony planned to sell production facilities for cutting-edge microprocessors and graphic chips to Toshiba for about 100 billion yen ($869.7 million) and an agreement is likely within a few months.

Both Sony and Toshiba declined to comment on the report.

To secure a stable supply of chips for its game machines after the possible sale, Sony is considering to set up a joint venture with Toshiba to take over actual production activities at the manufacturing facilities, the sources said.

Sony, which is in the final year of its three-year turnaround plan under Chief Executive Howard Stringer, said in February it will cut back on future chip spending and may not produce next-generation microchips using 45-nanometre circuitry in-house.

A nanometer is one billionth of a meter.

Sony Considers Selling Production Facility

TOKYO -- Sony Corp. is considering selling the production facility where it makes the advanced processor used in its PlayStation 3 videogame console, as part of its ongoing effort to focus more on its core electronics business.

People familiar with the situation said the company was in discussions with Toshiba Corp., Japan's largest chip manufacturer, which had worked with Sony and International Business Machines Corp. to develop the so-called Cell chip. They said a deal could be reached by the end of the year.

Such a move would fit into Sony's overall strategy to focus on products in its mainstay consumer electronics business and make chips only in areas where it has a competitive edge, such as the specialized chips used in digital cameras.

Sony invested 200 billion yen ($1.7 billion) a few years ago to develop the Cell processor, which is significantly more powerful than the chips typically used in PCs. But it would need to make a significant investment again to make the next-generation version. Toshiba and IBM both have the capability to make the same chips.

For Toshiba, the deal would help beef up its processor business, which is not as strong as its flash memory business.
