Toshiba shows soon-to-launch HD DVD recorders Toshiba is showing three yet-to-be-launched HD DVD recorders at this week’s Ceatec show in Japan. A main feature of all three players is the ability to transcode in real-time an off-the-air MPEG2 high-definition signal into the more efficient MPEG4 AVC compression system. When used it means recorded HD content will take up less space so more can be stored in the recorder’s hard-disk drive or on an HD DVD disc. Toshiba says about 6 hours of content can be stored on a single-layer HD DVD-R disc. Because the MPEG4 AVC data takes up less space it’s also possible to store about 2 hours of content on a DVD-R using the recently standardized HD REC format. The high-end RD-X7 recorder from Toshiba features 1080p (1080 horizontal lines with progressive scanning) video output at 24 frames per second, which is the highest of several grades of video signal judged to be high-definition. The other two recorders, the RD-A101 and RD-A201, didn’t appear to offer this output based on available information from Toshiba. The company hasn’t announced when the recorders will hit the market but three manufacturers of recorders based on the competing Blu-ray Disc format, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp, have all in the last month announced new machines for the year-end shopping season. To compete, Toshiba will likely have to release the new recorders in the coming weeks.

Toshiba and Microsoft Announce Plans to Form Advanced Interactivity ConsortiumDreamWorks Animation, Paramount, Universal and Warner join IT and consumer electronics industry leaders to extend and promote interactive experiences beyond optical media to new platforms.
TOKYO and REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 5, 2007 — Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp. today announced plans to form the Advanced Interactivity Consortium (AIC), an open forum aimed at the promotion of superior interactivity for a wide range of next-generation consumer devices, digital content and distribution scenarios. The newly formed organization’s mission is to maximize consumer satisfaction worldwide by accelerating industrywide adoption of advanced interactivity and interoperability across a broad array of HD DVD products.
In addition to its crystal-clear picture quality and sound, HD DVD, the next generation of DVD, approved by the DVD Forum, is the first platform to include advanced interactivity as a basic feature in high-definition movies and players, substantially expanding the possibilities of high-definition home entertainment.
The new organization will also focus attention on ways to bring these advanced scenarios to other services and platforms, including digital downloads to DVD players, PCs, TVs, cell phones, portable media players and game consoles.
“Creating attractive consumer experiences with advanced interactivity is critical to bringing digital home entertainment to the next level,” said Hisatsugu Nonaka, corporate executive vice president at Toshiba. “In order to create these ecosystems, we wanted to bring together a group of companies committed to extending these scenarios across a wide variety of platforms. The Advanced Interactivity Consortium will advocate for these platforms as well as help ensure interoperability of HD DVD players and services.”
“The Advanced Interactivity Consortium has its roots in the work we’ve done with HDi™ and HD DVD, but is open to all companies interested in bringing a broader set of experiences to consumers on different platforms,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “We look forward to contributing to this effort with HDi, our implementation of HD DVD’s interactive layer, and to collaborate with AIC members on how to extend interactive compatibilities to the consumer electronics market. The goal is to ensure a high-quality experience not only through optical discs but also through new digital download services.”
Based on easy-to-program Web standards, HDi technology naturally lends itself to cross-platform implementations and integration in online content services. For content owners, HDi provides a simple development environment, resulting in a seamless and visually consistent experience from device menus to Web-based applications.
The Advanced Interactivity Consortium will also include major Hollywood studios DreamWorks Animation SKG, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Bros., which have given their commitment to these advanced scenarios and experience bringing new features to consumers. Each studio currently distributes or will distribute HD DVD titles with HDi-enabled features, from advanced in-movie navigation, bookmarking and picture-in-picture, to Web-enabled communities, content downloads and e-commerce stores.
“We are pleased to support the formation of the Advanced Interactivity Consortium and look forward to further developing interactive scenarios on HD DVD that will extend the consumer experience to new platforms,” said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms. “By following a standards-based approach, this collaboration will uniformly benefit consumers as well as the industry.”
The AIC founding member companies plan to formalize the organization shortly and to extend additional partner invitations.

First Meeting of HD DVD Patent Holders Held Initial Group of 16 Makes Progress in Effort to Create Joint Patent License
CHEVY CHASE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MPEG LA announced today that the first meeting of essential HD DVD patent owners, currently consisting of 16 companies, was held in Los Angeles on September 11 for the purpose of creating a joint license providing fair, reasonable, non-discriminatory access to essential patents, as an alternative to negotiating separate licenses. Initial participating companies include LG Electronics Inc.; Microsoft Corporation; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; NEC Corporation; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; SANYO Electric Co., Ltd.; Sonic Solutions; TDK Corporation; Thomson Licensing; Toshiba Corporation; Victor Company of Japan, Ltd.(JVC); and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Inc.
“MPEG LA applauds the extraordinary cooperation of so many diverse companies working together to come up with an efficient way for users of the multitude of patents employed in HD DVD devices, discs and related implementations to address their licensing needs,” said MPEG LA CEO Larry Horn. “And the substantial progress made in this initial meeting bodes well for achieving it.”
MPEG LA, on behalf of essential patent owners, welcomes the input and views of interested parties, including potential licensees, in all related industry sectors. The objective is for the license to reflect both relevant conditions in the marketplace and the value of the licensed technology in order to strike a balance between patent users’ interest in reasonable access to this advanced optical disc technology and patent holders’ interest in a reasonable return on their research and development investment that enables a joint license to be offered for the convenience of the marketplace as an alternative to negotiating separate licenses.
Additional patent holder meetings are planned, and work on the joint license will continue. MPEG LA welcomes any party that believes it has patents which are essential to the HD DVD standard to submit them for evaluation of their essentiality by MPEG LA’s patent evaluators and participate in the joint license creation process if determined to be essential. Further information, along with terms and procedures governing patent submissions, can be found at http://www.mpegla.com/pid/hddvd/. While only issued patents that are essential to the HD DVD standard will be included in the license, in order to participate in the license development process, patent applications with claims that their owners believe are essential to the HD DVD standard and likely to issue in a patent also may be submitted for an evaluation of essentiality.
MPEG LA, LLC
MPEG LA is the world leader in alternative technology licenses, enabling users to acquire worldwide patent rights necessary for a technology standard or platform from multiple patent owners in a single transaction as an alternative to negotiating individual licenses. Wherever an independently administered one-stop patent license would provide a convenient marketplace alternative to assist users with implementation of their technology choices, the licensing model pioneered and employed by MPEG LA may provide a solution. By balancing patent users’ interest in reasonable access with patent owners’ interest in reasonable return, MPEG LA creates the opportunity for adoption of new technologies and fuels innovation. MPEG LA’s initial licensing program for MPEG-2 digital video compression helped produce the most widely employed standard in consumer electronics history, and the MPEG LA® Licensing Model has become the template for addressing other technologies. Today MPEG LA manages licensing programs consisting of essential patents in 57 countries. MPEG LA is an independent licensing administrator; it is not related to any standards agency and is not an affiliate of any patent holder. For more information, please refer to http://www.mpegla.com.

If HD DVD becomes the dominant format, you get all the content you want, without region coding. Think about that before the next post .
Talking about next post, there is a thread now on the topic so perhaps follow ups can go there....
sen om TL51 får vi veta när allt är klar.

HDGuru: Du får gärna komma med några fakta om regionskodning om du har några, om inte så låt bli. Det är ju redan tillräckligt infekterat i alla bd/hd-dvdtrådar så att det räcker.

DVD Forum approves 51GB HD DVDOCT. 4 | A working group within the DVD Forum has approved the specification for a triple-layer 51GB HD DVD, confirmed a spokesperson for the North American HD DVD Promotion Group, opening the door for the format to be competitive with Blu-ray Disc’s highest-capacity 50GB disc.
Replicators can now start producing 51GB HD DVD discs, which include three layers holding 17GB capacity each. Production should drive manufacturers to begin testing how existing HD DVD players and drives can playback such the new discs.
No studio has announced plans to release a 51GB HD DVD, which was first announced as a developing technology during January’s CES. However, HD DVD backers will likely use the ability to create such high-capacity discs as ammunition in the format war.
Many Blu-ray supporters have pointed to their own 50GB BD releases as a competitive advantage to HD DVD, which to date has generated 15GB and 30GB discs. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Oct. 30 BD release of Spider-Man 3 is among upcoming Blu-ray titles containing 50GB discs.

HD DVD profilerna In the existing HD DVD player advanced contents playback and the network correspondence which utilize HDi are made necessary, but directing to further functional strengthening, you say that it introduces the concept of "performance level", it keeps deciding the specification which is directed to the player who is higher function. "Performance level 1 player" defining the existing player. It is future higher function, in the player "of level 2", besides the fact that 1080/24p output correspondence is made necessary in addition to all function of level 1, analog/it designates that with digital sooner or later it outputs with 5.1ch as necessary important matter concerning audio output.
Furthermore, at level 1, introduction of record medium (Persistent storage) above 128MB has become necessary, but at level 2 compared to correspondence of storage of bulk becomes necessary. As for the Mimura Suguru period clerical work of the Toshiba digital media network corporation HD DVD business generalization section optical disk development department, "as for the player you think that in the future, it keeps moving to the performance level 2 product," that it did.
Furthermore, as for the subject which presently is in the midst of examining with HD DVD-Video, you call "speaker mapping of 7.1ch audio" and "stipulation to download of the image contents/disk record" etc.. http://www.avsforum....94#post11811694

HD DVD profilerna http://www.avsforum....94#post11811694
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Vad hände scrapa? ...det märks att du inte förstår det du läser (inte så konstigt, texten är från en google översättning) HD DVDn har inga profiler http://www.avsforum....73&postcount=70Performance levels 2 players are about the ability to do extra's such as analog outputs and decoding for multichannel and additional storage capabilities on network drive or usb memort sticks.
Nothing special to FUD about.
Mer info här http://www.emedialiv...cleid=11631#iiiHD DVD Video Player Performance Levels PL1 PL2
Image1.jpg 123,51K
On 19 November 2003, the DVD Forum voted to support HD DVD as the high definition successor of the standard DVD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD
Att HD DVD formatet är en del av DVDforumet säger en hel del...tyvärr kan man inte säga samma sak om...well u know

Universal Pictures Japan Hints At Future HD DVD Titles? At CEATEC Japan 2007, when it was Universal Pictures' (Japan) turn to present on stage, a slide provided by Universal Pictures Japan seems to suggest that titles such as Babe, Back to the Future Trilogy, Casper, Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws and Jurassic Park are among the major catalog titles that will be available on HD DVD in the future.
This is possibly the first time that Universal Pictures/Studios had publicly displayed these titles to be among some of the future HD DVD titles.

Amir Majidimehr överger HD DVDWith this post, I am announcing that I am no longer managing HD DVD development at Microsoft!
Yes, it was a dream job. As was managing the other areas such as VC-1 and technologies we don’t discuss here. But after 10 years of doing the same thing, and nearly 5 years of being involved in this “format war,” I thought I should go and do something new.
The groups I used to manage are in really good homes. The HD DVD team is now part of our new TV group which houses our IPTV offering (“Media Room”) and Media Center. This bodes well for synergies in the future between the technologies. The team is super strong and continues to amaze me with their execution both on the business and technical side. So my departure is not going to register in the real world in any substantive way.
Yes, I am going to miss being involved in this great endeavor. I am going to miss working closely with this super talented and creative team. And I think I just missed the chance to make money selling the movie rights for this saga. No one is going to pay good money for half the chapters!
I will be reporting to Robbie Bach who runs the Entertainment and Devices (E&D) division in a strategic position focusing on future “Connected Entertainment” scenarios.
With this, I will be curtailing my participation here as an official representative of Microsoft with respect to HD DVD. I will continue for a bit more on VC-1 front but that will be it. I will of course, continue to be involved in AVS in areas of personal interest for me. But my official representation of Microsoft is coming to an end. http://www.avsforum....ad.php?t=918902

HP offers up HD DVD / Blöj-röj drives on select Pavilion desktops Just last month, we heard rumblings that HP may begin offering up two-faced optical drives in its desktops, and sure enough, a variety of select Pavilions are now being served up with HD DVD and / or Blöj-röj compatibility. The d4995t, m9000t and m9000z all give users the option of purchasing a vanilla dual-layer DVD burner, an HD DVD / Blöj-röj combo player (that also burns DVDs), or a drive that burns Blöj-röj / DVD and reads HD DVD. Additionally, a number of lesser-spec'd rigs also provide users the option of picking up an HD combo drive of some sort, and you can even snap up ATI's TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner on the d4995t and m9000t (among others).
