Company sues Blu-ray over patent

Announcement
By Henning Molbaek
FIRST PUBLISHED May 28, 2007

Target Technology sues Sony for using a patented technology in their Blu-ray discs.

Target's patent, which was submitted in 2004 and granted in 2006, describes the use of silver-based alloys.

The company demands that Sony stop producing Blu-ray discs until the case has been settled.

Sony just settled with another company about the way they made the rumble effects in their older Playstation game controllers. The cost was $97 million. Sony also recently settled a dispute with Kodak as well. Over 10 digital camera patents were violated by the company. ;)

Price drops lift HD DVD player sales

Amazon sells Toshiba HD-A2 model as low as $238 over Memorial Day weekend

MAY 29 | Toshiba’s recent price drop on its HD DVD players and aggressive retailer pricing over the holiday weekend have driven up sales as much as tenfold at some retailers.

Since Toshiba began offering a $100 instant rebate on HD DVD players, sales have grown between fivefold and tenfold, depending on the retailer, said Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products.

“We’re thrilled to see that consumers are, by far, choosing Toshiba’s HD DVD players as their source for high-definition,” Sally said.

On May 20, Toshiba began offering the rebate on select HD DVD player models, effectively slashing the price on the bottom line HD-A2 model to $299.

Amazon.com cut the price even further, to as low as $238 over Memorial Day weekend. The lower price shot up the player to be the top-selling DVD player on the site, a spot previously held by the Oppo up-converting DVD player, which sells for $229.

The HD-A2 player price was back up to $299 on Tuesday on Amazon and listed as out of stock. Still it remained the top-selling DVD player and ranked No. 7 in sales in the electronics category.

An Amazon.com spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the sales.

Other retailers were selling the player for $299 on Tuesday, but comments on the AVS Forum reported seeing deals over the weekend from retailer Electronics Expo, which also sells players on Amazon.com.

We've gotten info from more than one retailer that Universal will shortly be announcing an HD-DVD version of Battlestar Galactica - Season 1. The release date they give us is unanimous, too, although each of them caution us that it's still subject to change. But the date is September 18th, we hear.

Media Advisory - Certicom Files Suit Against Sony For Patent Infringement :) igen

TORONTO, May 30 /CNW/ - Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC) today announced it has
initiated litigation in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division,
against Sony Corporation, and related Sony companies, for patent infringement.
In its filing, Certicom alleged infringement concerning two United States
patents used in the content protection technologies found in Sony products.
The patents-in-suit are two of Certicom's fundamental patents used in
consumer electronics, in particular its world-leading version of Elliptic
Curve Cryptography (ECC). In its complaint, Certicom alleges Sony has, and
continues to, infringe, contribute to and induce the infringement of
Certicom's patents by making, using, importing, offering for sale and selling
their products in the U.S. without being licensed by Certicom to do so. These
patents are related to content protection technologies, including Advanced
Access Control System (AACS) used in Blu-ray and Digital Transmission Content
Protection (DTCP) used in wired and wireless distribution of compression audio
and video. Products affected include Playstation 3, DVD players, VAIO personal
computers and certain high definition TV models and audio equipment.
"We have invested heavily in ECC research and development over many years
and feel strongly that our shareholders deserve fair value from companies
using our patented technology," said Bernard Crotty, President and Chief
Executive Officer. "We prefer to resolve these issues through commercial
discussions and without litigation. However, at this point we are left with no
alternative but to file suit."
Certicom is represented by the Fish & Neave Intellectual Property Group
of U.S.-based law firm Ropes & Gray.

Prisras pÄ hd-dvd-spelare i Sverige :)

Priserna pÄ hd-dvd-spelare i USA chocksÀnktes nyligen.

This HD DVD edition of 'Flags of Our Fathers' narrowly trumps the audio presentation on the Blu-ray edition by upgrading from a standard mix to a Dolby Digital 5.1-Plus track (1.5 Mbps). The Plus-mix feels richer -- especially when explosions are raging from all angles. The bass tones are a bit more resonant on the HD DVD, while they're a bit more throaty on the Blu-ray.

Kolla ansiktet, högra Àrmen, all tyg öht Àr skarpare pÄ BD versionen, bakgrunden Àr grymt tydlig, VC-1 smetar ut hela skiten och AVC bevarar grynigheten.

"As with the AVC encode on the BD disc, I was equally impressed with the VC-1 encode on this HD DVD disc. When checking the bitrate using Power DVD, I noticed that it was all over the map, with a low of about 10 Mbps and a high of around 25 Mbps"

"I was shocked to see that AVC was the codec used, and if the meter in the PS3 is accurate, a very high bitrate AVC encode to boot! The lowest I saw the meter drop to was 29.5 Mbps, with peaks around 39 Mbps! As you would expect from such a high bitrate, compression was never an issue and the overall look of the film was outstanding! Comparing this to the VC-1 encoded HD DVD I was equally impressed with each of the encodes."

HDD:

In a side by side comparison of the film between the VC-1 transfer on this HD DVD version and the AVC MPEG-4 transfer on the Blu-ray, it does seem that the Blu-ray/AVC encode is the tiniest bit sharper, while the HD DVD/VC-1 is the slightest bit softer.

Coming to America is being released by Paramount on both HD DVD and Blu-ray on June 5, keeping their neutral status in the Hi-Def wars. On the video side, the discs are presented in two different encodes, HD DVD is released with a 1080p VC-1 encode, while the Blu-ray has an AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encode. While generally Paramount releases have looked very similar, regardless of the encode, the case is not the same with this release.

Of the two releases, I preferred the look of the VC-1 encoded HD DVD to the BD for a number of reasons. First, the VC-1 transfer was much sharper than the AVC encode on the Blu-ray Disc with the fine detail in the foreground and background having more detail. Second, the color saturation was much richer and more satisfying to the eyes. The only negative on the VC-1 transfer was that there was some noise in some solid objects in the background, specifically on some painted walls. This has the classic look of compression issues, and that may be the culprit here.

To compare the titles, I watched œ of the movie on HD DVD and œ of the movie on BD, but I would switch between the discs about every 4 chapters or so. My wife was doing laundry the night we watched the movie, so when she would leave the room, I would change between the players. We started the movie on HD DVD and when I made the transition to the BD version, she noticed something was amiss as soon as she sat back down and questioned “what did I do to the picture?” I played dumb and we continued to watch the movie. About 25 minutes later, she left the room again and I switched back to HD DVD. When she came back in again, she commented that “whatever I did when she was gone, it looks much better now”. I had noticed the same thing, but kept my mouth shut. The last change back to the BD disc she was in the room and she finally figured out what I was doing and commented “Wow, normally they look exactly the same!” :)

Granted, it isn’t as if the Blu-ray looks bad, but it just doesn’t look as good as the HD DVD does, which is why I am scoring them differently. If you didn’t have to two to compare against side by side, you would think that each of them looks just fine, but I have the benefit of being able to go back and forth between the two formats. The Blu-ray release lacks the “pop” that the HD DVD has but lacks some of the compression issues on the HD DVD. But when you take everything together, the HD DVD has a more refined look to it in comparison.

Certicom Files Suit Against Sony For AACS Patent Infringement

Cryptography software provider Certicom has initiated litigation in the Eastern District of Texas against Sony, for patent infringement related to the AACS content protection used in Blu-Ray.

In its filing, Certicom alleged infringement concerning two United States patents used in the content protection technologies found in Sony products.

The patents-in-suit are two of Certicom's fundamental patents used in consumer electronics, in particular its version of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) public-key scheme. In its complaint, Certicom alleges Sony has, and continues to, infringe, contribute to and induce the infringement of Certicom's patents by making, using, importing, offering for sale and selling their products in the U.S. without being licensed by Certicom to do so. These patents are related to content protection technologies, including Advanced Access Control System (AACS) used in Blu-ray and Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) used in wired and wireless distribution of compression audio and video. Products affected include Playstation 3, DVD players, VAIO personal computers and certain high definition TV models and audio equipment.

"We have invested heavily in ECC research and development over many years and feel strongly that our shareholders deserve fair value from companies using our patented technology," said Bernard Crotty, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We prefer to resolve these issues through commercial discussions and without litigation. However, at this point we are left with no alternative but to file suit."

Sony has not made any official statement on the suit.

Certicom has filed the related ECC patent at the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2000.

Sony sued over Blu-ray

Given its global position as an electronics giant, Sony is quite familiar with patent law and the potential penalties for infringement.

Barely three months ago, Sony paid $97 million in damages and interest to Immersion in a dispute over the rumble functions in Sony's Dual Shock controllers. And while the two companies have since patched things up, Sony opted to leave rumble by the wayside when it was designing the PlayStation 3's motion-sensing Sixaxis controller.

The electronics giant hasn't been able to entirely avoid patent headaches since then, however, as Irvine, Calif.-based Target Technology filed suit earlier this month, seeking damages for alleged patent violations related to Sony's Blu-ray technology, which is used in the PS3 system.

The suit, which names Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Pictures and Sony DADC, claims that products marketed under the Blu-ray name infringe on a patent Target owns for reflective-layer materials in optical discs. The patent addresses what Target called a need for specific types of silver-based alloys with the advantages (but not the price) of gold. According to the patent, the alloys are also more resistant to corrosion than pure silver.

Target does not specify in its suit whether it believes all of Sony's Blu-ray discs infringe on the Target patent or whether the suit applies to just a portion of the discs manufactured. The patent was filed in April of 2004 and granted in March of 2006.

Target is seeking a permanent injunction that would prevent Sony from violating Target patent rights in the future, as well as damages, with interest, multiplied due to what Target characterizes as deliberate and willful infringement.

Sony representatives declined to comment. Target's attorneys had not returned GameSpot's requests for comment before press time.
