Captain Fantastic is due to make his high-def debut this week with the Blu-ray bow of the concert spectacular 'Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden.'
Captured entirely with high-def cameras, 'Elton 60' documents John's record-breaking 60th sellout performance at Madison Square Garden, which was held on his 60th birthday earlier this year. The once in a lifetime concert features performances of a staggering 33 classic tunes, and one of the most extravagant stage productions in the singer's legendary 30-plus year musical career.
First issued on standard DVD in early October, this Blu-ray edition marks the next-gen debut for the Island/Mercury label, which plans to release the disc December 4. (Note that distribution of the disc will be handled by Universal Music Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vivendi. UMG is not directly affiliated with HD DVD-exclusive Universal Studios.)
Tech specs for the Blu-ray version of 'Elton 60' include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video (1.78:1 widescreen), and two flavors of uncompressed PCM audio -- 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Stereo.
Although the two-disc DVD contained a wealth of rare vintage television performances by John, at press time there were no announced extras for the Blu-ray.
UMG has set a suggested list price of $24.95 for the Blu-ray.

'30 Days of Night' to Bite Into Blu-ray
In an early alert to retailers, Sony has revealed it plans to bring the hit vampire thriller '30 Days of Night' to Blu-ray this February.
Based on the popular graphic novel of the same name, '30 Days of Night' scared up nearly $50 million at the domestic box office this past October. Although Sony has yet to issue an official press release, the studio has informed retailers that the Josh Hartnett-starrer will sink its teeth into both Blu-ray and standard-def DVD on February 19, 2008.
Given the early nature of the announcement, there were no tech specs nor supplement details available at press time. However, both the Blu-ray and DVD are earmarked as special editions, so fans should expect plenty of extras. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted.
Suggested retail for the Blu-ray is $38.95.

POTC: At World's EndBlu-ray picks up where it left off a few weeks ago on its way to 400 titles by the end of the year with a mix of releases. The first comedy for the blu camp in some time, is Superbad, and the biggest title of the week is long awaited day and date release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Fox, on the other hand continues to waiver, not only did they drop Independence Day from the release list this week, but for whatever reason they decided not to bring the sixth season of 24 to Blu-ray despite releasing it on DVD. HD DVD has two exclusives this week, first up is the documentary, Arctic Tale and the first season of the very popular Battlestar Galactica. While we can't wait to see how well these titles sell, next week is the big week when the Harry Potter series hits both formats at the same time as the latest installment of Borne and High School Musical.

Milestone reached over Black Friday shopping weekend
DEC. 3 | The Blu-ray Disc Assn. is touting a new milestone passed over the Black Friday shopping period, noting that player sales since launch reached 2.7 million units through Nov. 24.
Like the HD DVD camp’s recent claims, the figure encompasses both Blu-ray-capable gaming devices and Blu-ray set-top players.
Through October, there had been 2 million units sold of the Blu-ray-enhanced PlayStation 3. That arguably gives Blu-ray set-tops a 700,000 piece of overall format unit sales. But the picture is muddied somewhat by the likely gangbuster PlayStation 3 sales in November due to the introduction of the relatively cheap $399 PlayStation 3. November console sales will not be available from the NPD Group until mid-December.
It’s tough to calculate specific gains for Blu-ray set-tops, as many of the manufacturers have not released sales information on their players to this point.
Still, the 2.7 million sold is a clear achievement over the HD DVD side, which pushed its installment base to 750,000 units following widespread holiday retail sales, notably including $99-priced players at Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Although not as steeply priced-slashed as rival HD DVD, many Blu-ray players also were sale-priced at retail. Several chains were offering Samsung and Sony Blu-ray players at $399, $100 below their $499 list prices.
The BDA last week also trumpeted its continuing lead in Blu-ray software sales, which in the weeks leading up to Black Friday had been outpacing HD DVD titles by a two-to-one ratio. During the Black Friday period, BD titles made up 72.6% of all high-def purchases, with HD DVD totaling 27.4%, according to Nielsen/VideoScan figures cited by BDA.
The fact that BD software remains the sales leader in an environment of heavy HD DVD player discounting is especially heartening to the BDA.
A statement from the group noted, “Despite the $99 HD DVD fire sale, Blu-ray movies were flying off the shelves in this crucial holiday shopping period.”
According to the BD camp, total BD disc sales in the U.S. since launch topped 4 million units in November, about the same time HD DVD software sales passed just 2.5 million units.
To date in the U.S., 18 of the Top 20 high-def releases are Blu-ray, according to the BD camp.
According to Media Control Gfk International figures cited by BDA, BD movies control 73% of the European market, outselling HD DVD by a three-to-one margin, and BD holds a 95% share of the high-def recorder market in Japan.

Web Communities Flourish With New HD DVD Titles
Transformers, Heroes draw in thousands of fans with web connected
interactivity
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Fans of summer smash hits and
groundbreaking TV series are tapping into the web-enabled communities
offered by HD DVD. "Transformers" from Paramount Home Entertainment and
"Heroes: Season One" from Universal Home Entertainment are among the titles
that saw significant online usage of the web-connected features.
"Transformers," which continues to be one of the top selling titles in
any high definition format, had more than 80,000 unique online users, with
31% returning to download additional content as it became available.
Universal's current web-enabled titles, which include "Heroes: Season One",
"Knocked Up", and "Evan Almighty", saw an average of 30% of HD DVD
purchasers going online to download content and connect with other fans.
"We've only scratched the surface in offering web-connected experiences
to fans of hit movies and TV shows, so it was great to see so many
connecting online for these titles," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice
president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home
Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group. "As more
titles from the HD DVD studios include access to downloads, trailers and
community pages, the owner of any HD DVD player can take advantage of these
web-connected experiences."
Made possible through Microsoft's HDi technology, web-connected
features are supported in every HD DVD player due to the mandatory hardware
requirements inherent in the HD DVD specifications. The specifications
include a network connection, picture-in-picture capability, and persistent
storage on the player itself. Collectively, these features bring a fan's
favorite movie or program to life, allowing for in depth second viewings,
and allowing content creators to add new material to the experience over
time.
"Seeing the fan base rally around 'Transformers', 'Heroes' and other
key titles on HD DVD was validation that there's an interest in extending
the movie watching experience," said Chris Saito, vice president of
worldwide HD DVD marketing, Paramount Home Entertainment. "Growing and
feeding the fan communities is a critical piece to evolving home
entertainment, and this is an example of where HD DVD is meeting the
challenge."
Web-enabled features found on Paramount's "Transformers" include
downloadable Sector 7 Transmission videos, "Transformers" Profiler with
still photography and bios, and "Intelligence Mode", a special data
dashboard providing stats on the various Autobots and Decepticons, a GPS
locator and factoids. The "Transformers" HD DVD also includes Menubots,
which allow fans to customize their menus to a variety of themes, from
Bumblebee to Megatron.
Universal's "Heroes: Season 1" HD DVD offers a Download Center filled
with exclusive content, trailers and show updates. The boxed set also
includes a Genetic Abilities Test where fans can test themselves and post
their "hero profile" to the Heroes community site on NBC.com, triggering a
unique access code to view exclusive content.

As we've previously reported, the BDA made a similar announcement here in the US last April, where Blu-ray was also the first high-def format to sell over a million discs. (As of late September, Home Media Research estimated that the US number had swelled to 2.6 million.)
Tuesday's announcement accompanied news that Blu-ray discs are now outselling HD DVD in Europe by a nearly 3:1 margin. Citing industry sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International, the BDA said that of the high-def discs bought by consumers so far this year in Europe, 73 percent were Blu-ray, while 27 percent were HD DVD.
Here in the US, year-to-date data through November 18 from Home Media Research also puts Blu-ray ahead of HD DVD, with Blu-ray accounting for 65 percent of high-def disc sales, versus 35 percent for HD DVD.

LONDON (Reuters) - High definition movie DVDs in the Blu-ray format have outsold the rival HD DVD standard in Europe this year, breaking the 1 million barrier and constituting 73 percent of all HD movie discs sold.
Citing industry sales data, the Blu-ray disc association said in a statement on Tuesday Blu-ray movie disc sales had topped 1 million units and when counting Blu-ray gaming discs the total number produced for sale in Europe exceeded 21 million units.
Sony's PlayStation 3 game console includes a Blu-ray Disc drive.
Hollywood and electronics manufacturers are hoping that new high-definition DVDs, with better picture quality and more capacity, will revive the slowing home DVD market.
But the launch of the next-generation DVD players has been complicated by the fact that there are two competing technologies available, Blu-ray and HD DVD.
HD DVD was developed by Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) while Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) backs the Blu-ray standard.
Of the high definition movie discs bought by consumers so far this year in Europe, 73 percent were in the Blu-ray Disc format and 27 percent were HD DVD, according to sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International.
Blu-ray said the best selling titles were 300, Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
Home Media Research said in October Blu-ray Disc DVD titles had outsold rival HD-DVD titles by almost two-to-one in the first nine months of the year in the United States.

Blu-ray Is Sony's Iraq
![]()
As expected, HD DVD sold very well and continues to show very good numbers during the holiday buying season. In looking back at the amount of pain this thing has caused Sony, I couldn't help but compare it to the U.S. and Iraq.
Think about it -- if Donald Rumsfeld, then the Secretary of Defense, had gone to George Bush and said, "Hey, we need to invade Iraq and the result will be I'll lose my job, most of the generals and advisers you currently have will resign or lose their jobs, you'll kill more U.S. soldiers than any president in near-term U.S. history, you'll lose Congress to the Democrats, you'll almost assure Hillary Clinton will be your successor, you'll restart the Cold War, you'll devalue the U.S. dollar to the lowest level in recent history, you'll go down in history as probably the dumbest U.S. president ever, and you'll be locked into an incredibly expensive battle you won't either be able to leave or win," you'd have to believe that George would have said, "No."
And not just "no," but "hell no, no way, nopers, negatory, not doing it, get the hell out of my office and don't come back."
Now look at Blu-ray. Since bringing it out, Sony has trashed its PlayStation division, had to downsize a number of top executives including the guy that was credited with creating the PlayStation's success in the first place. The company's financial performance has largely dropped into the toilet and it has had to sell off parts of the company to Toshiba, the company behind the other format. Key studios have abandoned it, some of which have gaming properties that probably now won't go to PlayStation. Sony has nearly assured that whatever country gets the next media format, it won't be Japan and probably will be China, it will be constantly reminded of the Betamax mistake, Nintendo is No. 1 in the gaming segment, and it'll be locked into a battle it can neither win nor exit from. You'd have to believe that the guy making the proposal would be chased by ninjas out of the office and his ending wouldn't have been a good one.
Oh, and one other similarity: If you point out that the Iraq war was brain-dead stupid, you are seen as a terrorist sympathizer; if you point out that Blu-ray was brain-dead stupid, you are portrayed as being on Toshiba or Microsoft's payroll. I still don't get the Microsoft thing, since neither it nor Intel seems to care that much one way or the other now, and both are focused more on downloads. It gives me a lot of empathy for the kid in the "The Emperor's New Clothes."

avstannande sverige!!

Jag ska förklara för dig
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is an American public corporation that runs a chain of large, discount department stores. It is currently the world's largest public corporation by revenue, according to the 2007 Fortune Global 500.[4] It was founded by Sam Walton in 1962, incorporated on October 31, 1969, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. It is the largest private employer in the world and the fourth largest utility or commercial employer, trailing the People's Liberation Army of China, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, and the Indian Railways. Wal-Mart is the largest grocery retailer in the United States, with an estimated 20% of the retail grocery and consumables business, as well as the largest toy seller in the U.S., with an estimated 22% share of the toy market.
Wal-Mart operates in Mexico as Walmex, in the United Kingdom as ASDA, and in Japan as Seiyu. It has wholly owned operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the UK. Wal-Mart's investments outside North America have produced mixed results. The company's operations in South America and China are highly successful, but it sold its retail operations in South Korea and Germany in 2006 due to sustained losses in highly competitive markets.
Wal-Mart International
Wal-Mart store in Mexico City
Wal-Mart store in Shenzhen, ChinaWal-Mart's international operations currently comprise 2,980 stores in 14 countries outside the United States.[34] According to Wal-Mart's 2006 Annual Report, the International division accounted for about 20.1% of sales.[28] There are wholly-owned operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico (while PR is technically a US territory, the company's operations there are managed through its international division[34]), and the UK. With 1.8 million employees worldwide, the company is the largest private employer in the US and Mexico, and one of the largest private employers in Canada.[35]

A number of retailers, including Crutchfield, Ultimate Electronics and Bjorn’s, credited Wal-Mart and Best Buy for helping to raise awareness of the category with pre-Black Friday sales that featured $99 Toshiba HD-A2 players.
“If nothing else, Wal-Mart making the Toshiba player $99 got a lot of airplay, and people are asking what is HD DVD?,” said Doug Bravin, chief operating offer at Bjorn’s, a San Antonio-based electronics super store. “They started to make it mainstream.”
Although Bjorn’s reported equal interest for HD DVD and Blu-ray, Crutchfield’s and Ultimate Electronics experienced a much larger price-driven demand for Toshiba HD DVD players. The North American HD DVD Promotional Group touted reaching 750,000 HD DVD units sold, which works out to a 28% jump in set-top sales from its standing prior to Black Friday.
Ultimate sold three times as many of Toshiba’s third-generation model, the HD-A3, than all of the Blu-ray models combined. Using its own price reductions and Toshiba’s $100-off rebate, Ultimate offered $149 HD-A3s, which regularly list for $299.

Video Ezy and Blockbuster have thrown their support behind Blu-ray, saying HD DVD was "missing the boat" and not taking the Australian market seriously enough.
As both high-definition disc format camps face an uphill battle convincing consumers of the benefits from upgrading their regular DVD players, in-store marketing support from retailers and rental stores is crucial.
Paul Uniacke, managing director of the Franchise Entertainment Group, which owns Video Ezy and Blockbuster in Australia, said the local roll-out of HD DVD had been too slow as its supporters did not see Australia as an important market compared with the US and Europe.
"Without meaning to be disrespectful, it's probably how they see this territory in terms of their bottom line," he said, adding the HD DVD side was quickly "missing the boat".
So far neither format is dominating in Australia but, thanks to the PlayStation 3 games consoles (PS3), Blu-ray has a commanding lead. Both sides are offering bundles with free movies and slashing prices to entice Christmas shoppers - the Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player, after a $100 rebate, now costs $499.
According to market-watcher GfK, 2241 stand-alone Blu-ray players have been sold in Australia to date, compared with 609 HD DVD players.
But Sony has moved more than 100,000 units of the PS3, which has a built-in Blu-ray player. Only 2461 add-on HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, which cost $249.95, have been sold so far.
The trend in player sales is consistent with sales of HD movies. More than 102,000 Blu-ray movies have been sold to date, as against just under 18,000 HD DVD movies.
Uniacke said most of the 870 Blockbuster and Video Ezy stores in Australia stocked Blu-ray titles, but most did not stock HD DVD titles.
Blockbuster in the US has supported Blu-ray exclusively for months and, locally, its head of product, John McKay, said Blockbuster would buy only Blu-ray titles "for the foreseeable future".
In an announcement made today, Sony said 40-inch LCD televisions connected to Blu-ray players and PS3s would be installed initially in close to 250 Video Ezy and Blockbuster stores across the country to promote the format.
Michele Garra, chairwoman of the local Blu-ray working group, said the deal was a sign that Blu-ray and high definition generally were hitting the mainstream.
"It has really been driven by the sales of the big-screen displays ... they really are an everyman product," she said.
iz van Hooven, managing director of HD DVD backer Universal Pictures, acknowledged the format had been slow to take off in Australia but said Uniacke was "just making a generalised point without really knowing the future and the direction that this format is going to take".
She said price would be the deciding factor in the format war and HD DVD players would always start at a lower price point than Blu-ray. Toshiba was set to release two new HD DVD players next year.
Uniacke said the door was still open for HD DVD but the Blu-ray kiosks were "quite large" (1.8 metres high and 1.6 metres wide), so it was highly unlikely HD DVD kiosks could feasibly be installed as well.
"We're not saying that we won't support HD DVD, that's for sure, but they've got a lot of catch-up work and the longer they leave it the more these deals will come across the line."
He said his stores had faced significant difficulty when trying to obtain HD DVD movies and derided Paramount, which recently ditched Blu-ray to support HD DVD exclusively, for releasing the HD DVD version of Transformers a month behind the DVD version.
He said the late releases were harming the format's chances in Australia significantly, but the delays weren't present in the US or European markets.
"The momentum's gone - all of our advertising has been spent in driving the DVD [and] you're not going to put marketing dollars into something that is four weeks behind and has limited hardware [support] in this country," he said.
By contrast, Sony Pictures released Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray in Australia on the same day it was released on DVD.
The Blu-ray format's early lead was helped by significant delays in bringing HD DVD players to the Australian market. Movie studios were reluctant to put discs on store shelves when the associated players were thin on the ground.
Today, 3 HD DVD players (all Toshiba models) and 11 Blu-ray models are on sale in Australia.
Sony said 156 Blu-ray titles had been released so far and 71 more would be out by the end of February.
A spokesman for Toshiba, the main backer of HD DVD and co-ordinator of the local consortium of HD DVD supporters, was unavailable for comment.
