AACS (Advanced Access Content System) krävs för BD-formatet. Denna licens kostar pengar.

I have heard a rumor that there will be a press announcement next week announcing the Blockbuster will begin carrying Blu-ray in all of its stores. They will continue to handle HD-DVD, but only in the top 200 stores. [i]AP Exclusive: Blockbuster to favor Blu-ray HD discs over DVD format
Blockbuster historien verkar ha betydligt större påverkan på formatstriden än någon hade räknat med:

Blu-ray Festival: Exclusive Blu-ray.com Brad Bird InterviewBlu-ray Disc This past Tuesday at the Blu-ray festival in Los Angeles, Ben Williams and Josh Dreuth had the opportunity to sit down with Brad Bird, Director of Ratatuoille and The Incredibles, and to discuss his thoughts on the upcoming Blu-ray release of Ratatouille, the state of animation in the world today and his upcoming projects.
brad_02.jpg 200,74K
0 Antal nerladdningarBelow is the complete transcript of the interview:Ben Williams (BW): Congratulations on Ratatouille - - it's still breaking records all over the world. Brad Bird (BB): It just keeps on cookin'. we're really happy about that – we thought it might be a little more esoteric being what it is and, uh, but Disney always anticipated that it would play well overseas because of the enjoyment of food and sort of slowing down and enjoying food is more of an older world way of looking at things. I actually think we could learn a lot from it. But Cars was always seen as being more domestic – a sort of American thing and Rat is always seen as being more international, So, that part of it wasn't a surprise – you know, how well it's doing and how it just keeps on going is quite a surprise and we're really happy about that. BW: Have you been doing a lot of work with developing Blu-ray content lately?BB: No, we're just kind of starting that. I've been looking at it and, it's amazing - - it is truly amazing, and I was totally blown away by the quality of the image. You know, I was just mentioning to somebody that we had it up on a screen - - not quite as big as that wall - - maybe two thirds the size of that wall –and I had a tough time telling it from the 2k (master). BW: Really?BB: Yeah… it was just Rick Sayre and everybody did an amazing job with it. He's one of these guys who really drives people nuts. If anybody tries to do the shortcuts that a lot of people do - - edge enhancement and stuff like that - - he comes down on them like a ton of bricks. Which makes the process more grueling, but the proof is in the pudding. He did The Incredibles and I was so impressed by the DVDs, that even though he didn't work on Rat, I said, can you come on in and do the Rat on Blu-ray? He was all over it. BW: Was Rat a case of you starting on work for the DVD and Blu-ray at the time production began?BB: Well definitely it's not like the first time anybody has done this, of course. This was a slightly different process for me because I was entering this movie late, so I had to kind of open it up and let other people handle it. I looked at the stuff and I made my comments, but I couldn't drive it as much as I did on Incredibles. That said, I'm really happy with the extra material on it. It's along the lines of Incredibles in that it's meant to candidly go in some directions other than what sounds like a bit of a puff piece. So, there's really a variety of strange little things that we do that most people wouldn't even think about. You know, there's one called “Tiny Rat Cameramen” that's taken from how I tried to describe to the people doing the camera, where the camera is what the feel of it should be - - almost as if we were filming a movie and there was a cameraman who was a rat. BW: A Rat point of view?BB: Yeah, yeah, right… like there's a steadycam running around. So, what does that mean and what is the visual quality of that? So, that's just one little thing that's included. You've seen the list of things that are on the Blu-ray and there's, like, a lot and that's just one. And, I'm especially happy, and this is true of the Blu-ray and the DVD, that we got into some 2D animation. Jim Capobianco - - who did the screen story with Jan Pincava and I - - had this idea for a short talking about the history of the rat. But we wanted to do it in like an old-school Disney circa 1950s, 60s style. You know, very stylized, very limited kind of animation - - very graphic. Once word got out that he was doing that in the studio – even though everybody was really working hard - - people just flocked to it ‘cause there's all these closet hand-drawn animators, guys that love hand drawn. They're happy doing CG, but this was a chance for them to exercise some old muscles and they just flew to the project and it became this labor of love. BW: Is hand drawn your first love?BB: Yeah…. Well, I like both of them, having done two movies now in CG, there are many aspects to CG that I really like and if I did hand-drawn, I would miss these aspects. There's a iterative process in how you approach animation, meaning that you can lay something out, look at it, and then adjust - - you know what I mean, like bring up the elbow a little bit or delay this a little more - - and it's fairly easy to do that (in CG). But, there's a graphic quality that hand-drawn has, an ability to push things that don't make logical sense, that make, sort of, visual sense that is a little more intuitive. I love that too - - I'm not somebody who feels that one is superior to the other. They are both their own thing, just like I don't feel that photography is better than painting. BW: Each is its own art form.BB: Yes! And I think that Nick Park, working with clay, god bless him, when he is interested in CG, I'll be interested in what he does - - I think its awesome that he wants to keep working with clay because I don't think it looks like anything else. It's a subtle difference, it is 3D - - it exists in space and it shares many qualities with CG, but it doesn't look like CG because it has a tactile feel to it that is unique to itself and I love it and wouldn't want him to change a frame of it! I hope we're moving towards a time when all kinds of animation are considered A-OK, when you aren't, you know, discouraged from doing anything that's not CG. There was a period there, and thankfully I think we are moving away from it - - I think one of the most encouraging signs to send is that when we merged with Disney and John (Lasseter) became in charge of all animation that one of the first things he did was bring back hand-drawn. They had already gotten rid of the desks and it was like - - this is Disney man, you can't get rid of the desks! There is nothing wrong with hand-drawn animation, it is just, you know - - tell good stories and you are A-OK. BW: So, what's next for you?BB: What's next? Well, I started on a live-action film right before I got asked to take on Ratatouille and I'm going to return to that. It's a historical-based sort of thing. I'm not really prepared to talk about it, but it's really cool! It's going to be crazy. So, that's what I'm on now and it's a big, complicated kind of thing. I always seem to kind of be throwing myself off the deep end - - jumping out of a plane and trying to figure out a parachute before I hit the ground. Källa: Blu-ray.com

Spider-Man 3 falls short of Transformers on first dayFirst up, Blu-ray. Sony would not discuss exact numbers yet but confirmed that it was the best selling Blu-ray title from the company yet. We will have to wait a few days to get exact numbers. On DVD, Virgin senior product manager Chris Anstey said that "Transformers" was a phenomenon. It sold three times more than Spider-man 3 on the first day. However, it is believed that Spider-man 3 will continue to sell trough the holiday season and pick up in numbers. More when the first week sales numbers comes in. http://www.dvdtown.c...-first-day/4888

We expect that BD+ will be cracked on a given title if smart hackers decide to focus on it. The benefit of BD+ is that we can change the scrambling method on a title by title basis, so they have to work on each title to break it. If this is not generating profit for the hackers, what is the motivation to keep doing it? http://forum.blu-ray...;postcount=5143

PS3 FW 2.0 * Remote Start - As hinted by the last PSP firmware update, Remote Play has been enhanced with a brand new feature. Using Remote Start, PSP owners will be able to turn on and access their PS3's content from any wi-fi hotspot. For example, while vacationing, you may find out about an excellent Thursday Store update. You'll be able to turn on your PS3 and start downloading content to your PS3 while you're away. When you're done, you can turn the system off as well. * Information Board - On the upper right-hand corner of the XMB, you'll see a scrolling list of headlines, hand-picked by Sony. Currently, these will all be related to video games and PlayStation. If a specific headline is particularly interesting, PS3 owners will be able to access Information Board from Network and see the content in greater detail. Importing your own RSS feeds is something that's planned for a future firmware upgrade. This feature can be disabled in Settings. * Themes - PSP owners recently got access to the ability to create custom themes for their system. PS3 owners will also get this feature. Not only will you be able to customize your wallpaper, you'll be able to change the icons and fonts used in the XMB. An official theme creator will be available for the PC, so users will be able to create their own and share with their friends. Additionally, new themes will be made available on PlayStation.com and the PLAYSTATION Store. The best user-generated themes will also be featured on the official site. * XMB Color Selector - The background of the XMB is no longer out of your control. The color of the XMB waves background can be selected in Settings. * Music & Photo Playlists - You can now open and create your own playlists from within the XMB. For example, you can create a "Party Mix," which features your favorite songs from your PS3. Playlists cannot be imported from Memory Stick, and music and photo playlists cannot be combined. However, future firmware updates will improve this feature. * Additional Sorting Options - Currently, music can be sorted by Artist and Album on the PS3. Additionally, users will be able to sort by Year. * DualShock 3 support - You'll be able to turn on and off DualShock 3 support from the Settings menu on the XMB. * PLAYSTATION Network XMB group - The PLAYSTATION Network will get its own icon on the XMB, and will be featured between Network and Friends. Within the PLAYSTATION Network, you'll be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management. "Other features" will be included in the future, such as Home. * Canon printer support - Additional printers are now supported by the PS3. Källa: PS3fanboy.com

Spider-man 3 Sells 130K in Six Days on Blu-ray
Posted November 8, 2007 by Josh
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the Blu-ray release of 'Spider-man 3' sold 130,000 copies the first six days at retail, 15,000 more copies than the Transformers HD DVD was reported to have sold its first week on store shelves. Having shipped 400,000 copies to retailers, this represents a 30% sell-off for the title.
David Bishop, President of Sony commented, "We are well-placed for the holidays. We got in before the key shopping season, and now you'll have more people getting into the market, as new players are launching from Sony, Sharp, Panasonic [among others]. It's our hope that they walk out with a player and Spider-Man 3."
The 130,000 sold does not include copies given away as part of a Sony promotion to provide the title to those who purchase a 40GB PS3. Sony expects demand to increase throughout the holiday season, with 'Spider-man 3' to remain a top seller.

From "The War Is Over", "HD DVD will be dead in months!" blah, blah to this?? Sony CEO Sees 'Stalemate' in Disc Fight NEW YORK (AP) — The head of Sony Corp., Howard Stringer, said Thursday that the Blu-ray disc format the company has developed as the successor to the DVD is in a "stalemate" with the competing HD DVD format, chiefly backed by Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
"It's a difficult fight," said Stringer, speaking at the 92nd Street Y cultural center in Manhattan.
Toshiba has been selling its players for as low as $200 heading into the holiday season, while Blu-ray players cost more than twice as much. The HD DVD camp also scored a significant win in August, when it induced Paramount Pictures to drop most of its support for Blu-ray and put out high-definition movies exclusively on HD DVD.
"We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides," Stringer said.
At the same time, he played down the importance of the battle, saying it was mostly a matter of prestige whose format wins out in the end.
"It doesn't mean as much as all that," Stringer said. He added that he believed there was an opportunity of uniting the two camps under one format before he became CEO, and he wishes he could travel back in time to make that happen.
Stringer was more upbeat about the PlayStation 3, the game console that has so far had disappointing sales compared to the rival Nintendo Wii.
The CEO said the console is the best-selling console in Europe after a price cut three weeks ago. In the U.S., a recent price cut has doubled sales.
"We are coming back up again," Stringer said. The company aims to sell 10 million PS3s by the end of its fiscal year in March. Nintendo has already sold 13.2 million Wiis.

Times change ...Marry Xmas

From "The War Is Over", "HD DVD will be dead in months!" blah, blah to this?? Sony CEO Sees 'Stalemate' in Disc Fight
NEW YORK (AP) — The head of Sony Corp., Howard Stringer, said Thursday that the Blu-ray disc format the company has developed as the successor to the DVD is in a "stalemate" with the competing HD DVD format, chiefly backed by Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

Spider-man Trilogy sold 71.95% what the single disk sold...
So we get 130,000 * .7195 = 93,535. So Spider-Man 3 sold 223,000 total copies (not counting PS3 bundles).
That's DOUBLE what Transformers likely sold.
