PlayStation 3 picks up DivX video support

DivX and Sony today announced that the PlayStation 3 will receive support for the DivX video format, giving owners of the console the ability to play the much-requested format without having to transcode videos or use network streaming software. The companies have yet to detail whether the PS3 will play movies at 1080p or with surround sound in the format but say the game system has been certified for "excellent" playback quality, according to the claim. DivX is accessible to developers integrating video into games as of the version 2.0 developer kit and should be playable by users in the normal media browser with an unspecified future update.

The upgrade places pressure on Microsoft, which is reportedly close to adding DivX for the Xbox 360 but is not known to have cemented a deal outside of an unintentional revelation by a DivX employee. Along with XviD, the format is often sought out by home theater enthusiasts hoping to watch many videos made available to download on the web (both official and otherwise) and is frequently seen as an obstacle to wider acceptance of the Apple TV, devices compatible with Microsoft's Media Center Extender feature, and other network media hubs.

Tror tyvärr att BD+ blir det som till slut fäller formaten. Tror att en teknik som gör det möjligt att låsa olika skivor på olika sätt kommer vara tillräckligt störande för piratkopierare vilket kommer leda till att filmbolagen hellre ser BD på tronen.
Vill verkligen inte ha massa kopieringsskydd, så på så vis vill jag se att HD-DVD vinner, dessutom har de bra titlar nu. Ser hellre Transformers än kassa skitgrejer som Batman, Fantastic Four och Superman. Usch och fy

Blu-ray börjar röra på sig i Sverige.

Disney säljer mycket bra av Pirates of the Caribbian 3. På Discshops försäljningslista finns DVD-versionen på 1:a plats medan Blu-ray utgåvan ligger på 4:e plats.

Det verkar som om Blu-ray börjar röra på sig ordentligt. Av de tjugoen första filmerna på topplistan har Blu-ray utgåvor tagit fem platser.

PS3 sales jump in US on heels of price cut

Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 have been given a boost in North America since it cut the price of the console and introduced a cheaper version at the beginning of November.

The company said Thursday that combined sales of the older 80GB model and the new 40GB model have increased by 192 percent at the top-10 major retailers in North America and "more than doubled" overall.

After seeing poor sales all year the company cut the price of the 80GB model from US$599 to US$499, and introduced a cheaper US$399 version on Nov. 2, with a lower capacity hard-disk drive. In addition to the smaller drive, the cheaper version lacks the ability to play PlayStation 2 titles.

The higher sales are good news for Sony, which has been running in third place in the console battle in the U.S. In October, 121,000 PlayStation 3 consoles were shipped, according to estimates from NPD Group. That ranks it lower than the seven-year-old PlayStation 2, which shipped 184,000 units in the month. The market-leading Nintendo Wii shipped 519,000 units and Microsoft's Xbox 360 shipped 366,000 units, said NPD.

However, the higher sales will likely increase losses in Sony's company's gaming business. The unit reported a ¥96.7 billion (US$895 million) operating loss in the July to September quarter, largely because Sony is losing money on each PlayStation 3 console sold. It is looking to increase market share, and boost the number of game titles available to offset the losses with future software sales.

Going into the U.S. holiday season Sony is running its largest marketing effort to date in an attempt to kick-start sales of the PlayStation 3. The national advertising campaign will see commercials air on several TV networks including NBC, Fox and the ESPN cable sports channel.

To compete better at the low-end, where Nintendo's Wii has stolen a lead with its innovative motion-sensing controller and low price, Sony is offering a bundle of the PlayStation 2 with the SingStar Pro software and two microphones for US$149.

Stämmer bra, eftersom jag har en Onkyo 805 som klarar av att avkoda de nya ljudformaten så får det bli en Panasonic BP30, den avkodar inga av de nya ljudformaten själv men kan skicka dom till min receiver som sedan avkodar dom...

Jag tänkte mer på att filmerna lätt kostade nästan 300 spänn förut. Så det märks att priserna börjar sjunka. Hoppas filmerna ligger på 100-150 spänn nästa jul.

Sony called most green games company by Greenpeace

Do you love the earth? How about the PSP and PS3? Good, because your loves are one and the same. Sony is called the most green games manufacturer by environmental group Greenpeace. Sony scored an impressive 7.3 from the organization, making it the third most green company in the list. Compare that to Microsoft at 2.7 and Nintendo at a shocking 0. Sony fans certainly can be proud of their company's efforts to truly go green.

No games are currently made for the Xbox 360's HD DVD attachment as the drive is considered strictly optional.

The update is only partly countered by a new report from the opposing HD DVD Promotional Group on the same day. The firm claims to have sold 750,000 players this year, edging out Blu-ray in terms of stand-alone players; however, including the Blu-ray-equipped PS3 tilts the figures in favor of Blu-ray. The HD DVD Group frequently contends that the Sony system is only a game console and does not matter in the final tally despite its ability to play Blu-ray movies.

Den lilla marknad som hd dvd/blu-ray har i Europa idag gör ju att statistiken blir extrem. Klart PS3 har enorm genomslagskraft nu i "början". De flesta som köpt hd dvdspelare och BD stand-alone är entusiaster än så länge. Och när då hd dvd är regionsfritt så importerar nog de flesta sina filmer där det är billigast. Däremot PS3an får såklart en bredare publik och hade inte Blu-ray haft de övertaget i statistiken så hade det varit skrämmande med tanke på hur mycket Sony förlorar på varje konsol som säljs.

Tycker det står 27% i artikeln men jag kan ha fel.

Utan att bråka eller att säga att någon sida är bättre än någon (jag e s.k neutral).

Jag tänker genast på Betamax/VHS Där VHS drog det längsta strået och de va det ingen som trodde då Betamax va bättre och större i början.

Man vet ju aldrig det kan komma en bomb när som helst som kan få format kriget att vända åt vilket håll som helst.
Men det känns onekligen som BD harövertaget i allafall när det gäller sålda filmer.

BDA: European Blu-ray Disc Sales Top One Million

Blu-ray disc sales have taken a commanding lead across the pond, where the Blu-ray Disc Association announced Tuesday that over one million Blu-ray discs have been sold in Europe alone.

As we've previously reported, the BDA made a similar announcement here in the US last April, where Blu-ray was also the first high-def format to sell over a million discs. (As of late September, Home Media Research estimated that the US number had swelled to 2.6 million.)

Tuesday's announcement accompanied news that Blu-ray discs are now outselling HD DVD in Europe by a nearly 3:1 margin. Citing industry sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International, the BDA said that of the high-def discs bought by consumers so far this year in Europe, 73 percent were Blu-ray, while 27 percent were HD DVD.

Here in the US, year-to-date data through November 18 from Home Media Research also puts Blu-ray ahead of HD DVD, with Blu-ray accounting for 65 percent of high-def disc sales, versus 35 percent for HD DVD.

Låter rimligt att börja med Blu-ray då majoriteten av användarbasen för högupplöst sitter med en PS3a. Även folk som köpt PS3an som spelkonsol lär ju hyra film. Däremot tror jag båda formaten kommer finnas kvar så HD DVD lär komma ut bland uthyrningsställen i framtiden med.

Blu-ray Gets Black Friday Win

Blu-ray Disc Nielson VideoScan data for last week reports that Blu-ray has topped its high definition rival for yet another week - this time with a very impressive 72.6% market share. The sales data includes titles sold on Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving characterized by deep discounts and enormous amounts of consumer spending.

Possibly leading the pack was Fox's Blu-ray release of 'Live Free or Die Hard' - the latest installment in the "Die Hard" franchise. Early reports show that the title managed to sell nearly 100,000 units last week alone.

Blu-ray has yet to lose a week to its rival this year, with Blu-ray holding a 2-to-1 average sales advantage. Achieving a nearly 3-to-1 sales advantage for the important shopping week despite an influx of sub-$100 HD DVD players shows that consumers continue to choose Blu-ray as their preferred high definition format.

OK, now we're finally starting to see some Blu-ray bonus features that offer a hint of what this thing is capable of.

Viewing the new Blu-ray versions of "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" over the past few days, on the heels of "Close Encounters" and "Cars," I'm really starting to sense that studios and filmmakers are finally getting their arms around the creative and technical capabilities of the 50 GB capacity and BD-Java interactivity that are unique to Blu-ray.
The Black Hat Intercept game on "LFODH" is remarkably sophisticated and complex as well as visually dynamic and engaging. It also plays very intuitively and pretty smoothly too. It's the kind of game that hints at even better things to come.

"Pirates" is a complete high-def Disney-fest from the opening promos that will have fans staring wide-eyed in awe at the dazzlingly vivid commercial for Disney theme parks, an all-things Disney branding promo ("Disney; Magic; More"), the trailer for the Dec. 21 "National Treasure" sequel in theaters, and current and upcomng Blu-ray titles. Then there is the fun new Disney Blu-ray Disc animated branding tag that features what appears to be an abbreviated and more traditionally animated version of the Disney CGI-animated castle movie logo (with a lot of Blue tones) that concludes with the tag "Magic in High-Definition."

And that's all before any of the real stuff begins, starting with the welcome return of the snarling and cynical 3-D Jolly Roger as the Blu-ray menu host.

While there's no game like "Liar's Dice" this time out, there is a much more innovative approach to what would otherwise be an ordinary making-of featurette.

Produced exclusively for the Blu-ray version of the this title, "Enter the Maelstrom" features mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer flying Donald Trump-like in a helicopter to the giant Palmdale, Ca. hangar used for a soundstage to film the centerpiece action scene in the movie. Bruckheimer then verbally takes viewers quickly and easily through an introduction and instruction of what you are about to see and how to manipulate it -- a six-minute time-lapse showcase of the construction of the enormous set featuring the two full-scale pirate ships side-by-side, which is riddled throughout with seemingly countless pop-up options.

Those options allow you to select any of several on the screen at any moment to see more detailed videos of specific areas of visual effects, lighting, and even actors rehearsing and performing in driving rain every day for a month. Upon viewing each optional video, you are then offered a choice of viewing several sub-options or returning to your original spot in the time-lapse featurette, which also has an option to turn off Bruckheimer's voice-over.

While the content is not anything particularly new in form or substance (though it is very fascinating and entertaining), the unique approach and use of the interactive capabilities of the format once again hints that we are on the cusp of some really great exploitations of the technology.

WinDVD software gets Blu-ray Profile 1.1 certification

Corel has announced that its WinDVD software has been awarded BD-Video Profile 1.1 certification by the Blu-ray Disc Association.

This means that all additional interactive content on future Blu-ray discs will be playable on PCs running the software.

Jeff Hastings, President and General Manager, Digital Media at Corel said, "Corel is pleased to be the first DVD playback software vendor to receive BD-Video 1.1 Certification. With the retail release of Profile 1.1-enabled Blu-ray Discs early in 2008, WinDVD users will be able to enjoy the ultimate at-home movie viewing experience, watching their favorite high-definition Blu-ray Disc movies, while enjoying the director's commentary at the same time."

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 25th, 2007

Blu-ray once again pulls ahead with help from Bruce in this week's Nielsen VideoScan numbers courtesy of Home Media Magazine. In fact this week's 72/28 (2.57:1) is the biggest lead Blu-ray has enjoyed since we started our weekly post a couple of months ago. HD DVD has a few hot titles of their own this week with Sherk the Third making the top five as well as Transformers which held on to HD DVD's only other top ten spot. Not surprisingly, the very expensive Star Trek box set failed to make the top ten. Judging by this list, it doesn't appear that Blu-ray recent discount sales had much of an impact on this weeks numbers and was more impacted by big titles -- surprise, surprise. The other trend that continues is Warner's Blu-ray titles make the list while its HD DVD brother does not -- we can't wait to see what happens in December when Harry hits the shelves. Judging by last week's titles, (not counted here) we'd expect much of the same next week, unless of course all those new HD DVD owners finally got done watching all those free titles and finally start buying movies to actually help red's cause.

Disney Adds Support for D-Box

Walt Disney Pictures Disney has signed a deal with D-Box which will allow the studio to add D-Box Motion Code support to an unspecified number of titles. As you may have noticed, many Fox titles have utilized this technology to control specialized seating which reacts to action on the screen. The first Disney Blu-ray to use the technology will be 'The Game Plan' which is set to be released on January 22nd.

Blu-ray players reach 2.7 million units sold
Milestone reached over Black Friday shopping weekend

DEC. 3 | The Blu-ray Disc Assn. is touting a new milestone passed over the Black Friday shopping period, noting that player sales since launch reached 2.7 million units through Nov. 24.

Like the HD DVD camp’s recent claims, the figure encompasses both Blu-ray-capable gaming devices and Blu-ray set-top players.

Through October, there had been 2 million units sold of the Blu-ray-enhanced PlayStation 3. That arguably gives Blu-ray set-tops a 700,000 piece of overall format unit sales. But the picture is muddied somewhat by the likely gangbuster PlayStation 3 sales in November due to the introduction of the relatively cheap $399 PlayStation 3. November console sales will not be available from the NPD Group until mid-December.

It’s tough to calculate specific gains for Blu-ray set-tops, as many of the manufacturers have not released sales information on their players to this point.

Still, the 2.7 million sold is a clear achievement over the HD DVD side, which pushed its installment base to 750,000 units following widespread holiday retail sales, notably including $99-priced players at Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Although not as steeply priced-slashed as rival HD DVD, many Blu-ray players also were sale-priced at retail. Several chains were offering Samsung and Sony Blu-ray players at $399, $100 below their $499 list prices.

The BDA last week also trumpeted its continuing lead in Blu-ray software sales, which in the weeks leading up to Black Friday had been outpacing HD DVD titles by a two-to-one ratio. During the Black Friday period, BD titles made up 72.6% of all high-def purchases, with HD DVD totaling 27.4%, according to Nielsen/VideoScan figures cited by BDA.

The fact that BD software remains the sales leader in an environment of heavy HD DVD player discounting is especially heartening to the BDA.

A statement from the group noted, “Despite the $99 HD DVD fire sale, Blu-ray movies were flying off the shelves in this crucial holiday shopping period.”

According to the BD camp, total BD disc sales in the U.S. since launch topped 4 million units in November, about the same time HD DVD software sales passed just 2.5 million units.

To date in the U.S., 18 of the Top 20 high-def releases are Blu-ray, according to the BD camp.

According to Media Control Gfk International figures cited by BDA, BD movies control 73% of the European market, outselling HD DVD by a three-to-one margin, and BD holds a 95% share of the high-def recorder market in Japan.
