An Apple TV With a Blu-ray Player?

Rumors are flying fast and furious over what Steve Jobs will pull out of his blue-jean pocket a week from Tuesday at his annual speech at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. These include a movie rental service for iTunes, a super small notebook computer perhaps with a solid-state hard drive, a notebook docking station, and new features for the iPhone. Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research, suggested that Apple will start shipping some computers with Blu-ray high-definition DVD drives.

By itself, adding Blu-ray to Macs is nothing more than continuing to add features to justify the Mac price premium. But there is another move that Apple could make that could well be a game changer: introducing a new version of Apple TV with a built in Blu-ray player.

Separately, neither Apple TV nor Blu-ray players have excited consumers. People have been wary of the fight between Blu-ray and rival HD DVD players, worrying that they will end up owning the disk equivalent of a useless Betamax player. And Apple TV just didn’t seem to have all that many useful things you could do with it.

For that matter, online video rentals have been around for several years, by way of Movielink, and also have attracted very few users. The hottest movie download service in fact may be Xbox Live, which makes sense because the game machines are already hooked up to televisions.

Imagine, however, if Apple introduced this product, say for $399: It plays Blu-ray disks. It lets you buy or rent movies and TV programs from the Internet. It automatically downloads and plays free video (and audio) podcasts. And it brings your iTunes music collection to your living room.

This combination of features may be enough of a package that consumers will feel they aren’t taking too much risk buying one. And Apple’s brand may also reassure them. The company is not only the sexiest name in consumer electronics right now, but it also has a respectable track record of being able to negotiate with Hollywood to bring content to its devices. (The first version of Apple TV was a bit of an exception).

Apple’s clout might also help tip the now-tied race between Blu-ray and HD DVD. (Apple has been on the sidelines, but is a Blu-ray sympathizer. It serves on the Blu-ray advisory committee. And Disney, of which Mr. Jobs is the largest shareholder, backs Blu-ray.)

There are two other features of this product I’m imagining I’d like to see, but I think are less likely: streaming video and a commitment to advertiser-supported free video. Apple has focused on video downloads, in part because the quality is better than streaming and they fit into its iTunes model. But the first Apple TV does have streaming for movie trailers. Adding a broader streaming capability would expand programming choices and make the device useful for live and very recent content, like news and sports.

Apple has also not been serious about exploring ad-supported video, but this too is inevitable. For everyone who wants to watch “Heroes” without commercials for $1.99 an episode, there have to be 10 or 100 who will put up with commercials to see it free.

Such a device could also have a TV tuner, a CableCard slot and act as a digital video recorder. But my guess is that Mr. Jobs would find that this makes it far too complex and he will leave these functions to the cable set top boxes.

I don’t know what Mr. Jobs will pull out of his pocket. But I do know that he has a three-decade track record of picking when a technology is ready to enter the mainstream. Blu-ray and Internet video combined may be at just such a moment.

It is now clear that New Line (Owned by Warner Bros.) will also drop HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray. The announcement comes on a day that can only be described as a nightmare for the HD DVD camp.

This means that from May 2008 no titles from New Line and Warner Bros. will be released on HD DVD.

The reason for the May 2008 date is that Warner Bros. is currently under contract to deliver titles on the HD DVD format. The contract ends on that date.

Jag måste säga att BD+ ser ut att funka hyffsat bra trots all snack om slysoft etc.
Det Slysoft lyckades med är att kunna få hela filmen kopierad men med BD+ intakt, så man kan fortfarande inte "rippa" filmen.
Piratkopieringshotet tror jag är störst vad det gäller dessa 720p rippar och inte 25-50gb stora filmer.
(Nu finns det visserligen dem som lyckas göra caps via HDMI men det är en helt annan sak )

Personligen tycker jag det låter helt befängt att FOX ens skulle ha funderat på att bli HD-DVD exklusiv. Jag menar, FOX har ju propagerat för det bättre kopieringsskyddet på Blu-ray samt regionskodar ju i stort sett allt på Blu-ray.

Skulle dom helt plötsligt lämna Blu-ray (som har sålt betydligt bättre än HD-DVD) för att börja släppa filmer regionsfritt samt med sämre kopieringsskydd på HD-DVD? Nej, det är nog bara löjliga rykten spridda av sura HD-DVD anhängare!

Some rumors that just won't die eventually end up being true, and the latest to reappear is the Target is going Blu-ray exclusive one. Today at Phillips' press event during CES, while Stewart Muller was introducing its new Blu-ray player he also mentioned that Target was going Blu-ray exclusive. Of course what his definition of exclusive means might be his alone, but unless Target pulls all the HD DVD movies off their shelves entirely, we're not sure we agree.

Rumor Smashed: Target NOT Going Totally Blu-ray Exclusive

Fire out of the Philips press conference was that Target was going Blu-ray exclusive, a rumor that had already made the rounds before and was debunked. We just talked to the Blu-ray guys and to Philips—it's actually the same news as before. Target is still selling HD DVD discs and the Xbox 360's HD DVD player. God, it would've been the last thing HD DVD needed.

While we like Blu-ray burners as much as the next guy, we've never understood why the burners came first. Well, the wait is finally over and Sony has just announced the BDU-X10S for both the PC (pictured) and laptop (after the jump) with a MSRP of $200 -- curiously not 199.99. If this isn't a good enough deal for you, luckily Sony is also including CyberLink's PowerDVD BD Edition. The drives feature a SATA interface, which makes sense since this is the interface of choice on the type of newer PCs that will actually have the juice to playback HD.

PS3an kommer att bli en BD 2.0-spelare framöver, vilket vi iofs redan har anat, men som nu är bekräftat på CES-golvet hos Sony.

At the Sony booth, they are showcasing two new prototype BD-Live players. The Sapphire 3 and 4 will both be Profile 2.0. Sony also has indicated that the PS3 will get a BD-Live upgrade sometime in the future.

Enligt Bill Hunt så verkar det som att både Paramount och Universal är på väg att meddela att dom inom kort går över till Blu-ray:

Well... we've had SOME confirmation this morning of the details of the Financial Times story from last night. While the studio isn't yet commenting, reliable industry sources are telling us that Paramount is indeed preparing to end their HD-DVD support and announce a return to the Blu-ray fold. Details are currently being finalized, and an announcement is expected as soon as they're complete. Paramount's first new Blu-rays will almost certainly include many of those titles that were cancelled last year, but that were already packaged and ready for shipping, so you could see them in stores very quickly once the studio announces.

Meanwhile, sources are telling us that Universal has also been talking with the BDA, and is looking to follow Paramount and Warner's lead as soon as possible.

On a related note, Times Online in the U.K. is now reporting that as many as 20 additional firms currently backing HD-DVD are also considering defection in the wake of Warner's Friday announcement, including Fujitsu, Lenovo, Kenwood and Pony Canyon (which is a major Japanese film and music studio).

What's more, word is starting to circulate at CES that major big box retailers will begin winding down in-store support for HD-DVD as soon as these studios go public with their decisions. We're told that the industry's major retail partners are already pressuring Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal to go Blu following Warner's decision.

Rumors are also beginning to circulate here that Apple's Steve Jobs may announce the addition of Blu-ray Disc drives to their Mac desktop lineup at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

We would caution you to keep in mind that all of this should be considered unofficial until the studios make their actual announcements. Things are moving very fast, and the situation is highly fluid. Still, it really looks like this is the end for HD-DVD, and the end of the format war overall. We'll keep you up to date with new developments as they break.

Given recent events, it's not a surprising turn, and the studio's Blu-ray library that debuted with "Pirates" will swell to nine movies by January 11. Coming to the roster are: "Island Fever" 3 and 4, "Babysitters," "Jack's Teen America 3," "Jesse Jane: Sexual Freak," "Hush," "Contract Star" and "Jesse Jane Pink." Studio founder Joone (yeah, only one name) does not credit any picture quality issues in the decision, and even said there was no difference between the two formats. The real reason was consumer demand -- specifically PS3 owners. No mention of how the titles might leverage interactive features, although we're willing to, uh, review sample discs.

Bang & Olufsen drops HD DVD plans after Warner decision

Danish tech company Bang & Olufsen had a small press reception yesterday evening at CES. I attended with a couple dozen others. In the question-answer session I asked about Blu-ray support since no HD DVD or BD players had been announced (although players from both sides had been used in their demos of their new displays).

Peter Petersen, B&O's Chief Technology Officer, said they had been planning on making a combo player but after Friday's Warner's announcement they have dropped plans to include HD DVD and now will develop only a BD player. He said it would be available in 2009.

Svårt att tro, säkerheten i PS3 är betydligt mer sofistikerad än andra Blu-Ray spelare och troligtvis ligger regionsskyddet i samma inbakade säkerthet som resten.

Problemet med PS3 är att den inte är intressant för hackers som har mål med Linux då maskinen redan kan köra Linux och det är en av huvudanledlingar till varför säkerheten inte är knäckt trots att den är svagare än på 360.

Lösningen skulle isf vara ett program på Linux som kan köra Blu-Ray driven hos PS3 och skippa regionskodningen.

Utdrag ur: MY TWO CENTS - 1/9/08 - by Digital Bits editor Bill Hunt

...so let's get a little update on the high-def situation. Home Media has confirmed that HBO is following Warner and New Line to Blu-ray exclusivity, as we expected. Things are still moving internally at Paramount and Universal. But at least for the moment, Paramount is denying that they're giving up on HD-DVD, and of course, sites like Ain't it Cool are latching on to that. So naturally, enthusiasts all over the Net are confused today. First, you'll notice neither studio is denying that they plan to go Blu - just that they're not giving up on HD-DVD at the moment. Second, look... we love the guys at AICN, including Harry. I mean that straight up, no bullshit. He's a good guy and he does a lot for movie fans online. But with all due respect, he's been a little bit behind the curve with regard to this high-def format war all along. So we'll leave it at that. I needn't remind any of you that before the holidays, Warner was still officially claiming that they were going to continue to support both high-def formats, and we all know how that turned out now.

We remain convinced that both Paramount and Universal are moving towards announcing Blu-ray Disc support soon, and we have real reason for that belief, not the least of which is that our sources in this situation are second to none - a fact which should be readily obvious by now. Announcements could happen tomorrow, they could happen next week, they could happen next month. We'd be surprised if it took longer than a month or two. We're hearing that Universal may not announce until February at the earliest, as we're given to understand that their contract period with the HD-DVD camp expires at the end of January. So everyone needs to just take a deep breath and relax. We know that's hard, given how fast things have been moving this past week. Rest assured, Paramount and Universal are going Blu, but sorting out all the legal details and organizing the logistics takes time. The Warner move was apparently well planned, but Paramount and Universal have only just started that process. They may or may not continue releasing HD-DVDs for a time - we'll have to wait and see. But retailers are now seriously pressuring these studios to go Blu, and we'd be surprised if many mainstream stores still have HD-DVD hardware and software on their shelves come next Christmas. I suspect that Paramount especially wants to be able to announce a few actual titles when they announce their Blu-ray support, and it takes time to get all that ready. Keep in mind that things have been extremely chaotic within the home video industry this week. So everyone just take a deep breath and try to calm down, while we wait for things to play out...

In order to better assess retailers' possible next moves, we contacted a variety of local Orange County, CA retail locations yesterday (including Best Buy and Circuit City stores, as well as Frys Electronics and a couple of specialty retailers) for an informal poll, and have learned that since Warner's decision on Friday, Blu-ray Disc hardware has begun outselling HD-DVD hardware dramatically, jumping from 3 to 1 early last week to a factor of roughly 20 to 1 (on average) over the weekend. Sales people are now more confidently recommending Blu-ray to their customers as the preferred of the two formats, and there have apparently been returns of HD-DVD decks. Said one Best Buy employee yesterday of HD-DVD: "We'll keep it around until it goes on clearance, but in a couple months, it probably won't be there anymore."
