While HD DVD continues to edge back a few percent at a time -- 15 percent, then 17 and now 18 -- with almost a month to go until the red camp has a title worth mentioning, we expect Blu-ray to continue to kill HD DVD in the Nielsen VideoScan charts, courtesy of Home Media Magazine. Also for the third week in a row, HD DVD fails to get a title on the top 10, but this week only two Blu titles that are also available on Blu-ray, made the list. The two Blu-ray new releases top the charts this week, while former number two 3:10 to Yuma holds on to third, which still sold half as many copies as the leader Saw IV. Meanwhile, the latest Pirates movie drops to four, after being in the top three, for seven weeks in a row -- that's some legs. Looking toward to next week, we expect another week of Blu-ray outselling HD DVD by over 4:1and will be interested in seeing how well Warner's The Invasion does, despite its poor reviews.

National Geographic Makes Move to Blu-ray Exclusivity

Warner's move to Blu-ray exclusivity has swayed yet another distribution partner to follow suit, with National Geographic confirming that it too will drop HD DVD support in favor of Blu-ray

Distributed under the Warner umbrella along with New Line Home Entertainment, HBO Home Video and BBC Home Video, National Geographic had been format-neutral, releasing only one title thus far, 'Relentless Enemies,' on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Although the company says it has no plans to issue an official statement or press release, a spokesperson confirmed for us that moving forward, National Geographic will no longer release titles in the HD DVD format.

The move will go into effect with the company's upcoming release, 'Sharkwater,' which will hit Blu-ray only in April (an official announcement for the title with full details is expected shortly.)

National Geographic's decision comes in the wake of moves by Warner subsidiaries New Line and HBO to shift to Blu-ray exclusivity. BBC is now the only Warner-distributed company to remain format-neutral.

Budget Label Platinum Disc to Release Blu-ray Titles
Perhaps an April Fool’s joke, but budget label Platinum Disc is set to release half a dozen Blu-ray titles on April 1st.

The titles are available for pre-order at Amazon at less than $10. These include: Artie Lange’s Beer League, Blackbeard, 10.5 Apocalypse, Category 7: End of the World, Curse of King Tut’s Tomb and Last Sentinel

Titles like The Last Sentinel appear to be targeted at gamers, so perhaps the PS3 is the motivation for Blu-ray releases of such titles.

The titles appear to be direct to video titles - does the arrival of cheap direct to video titles mean that Blu-ray has hit the ‘main stream’?

Singulus sees 2008 blu-ray machine deliveries higher than expected
Singulus Technologies AG's chief executive Stefan Baustert said that the 'chance has significantly increased that we will deliver more than the previously planned 15 blu-ray machines in 2008', Euro am Sonntag reported.

He also said it is probable that the company will this year reach a worldwide market share in the production of blu-ray machines of about two-thirds.

Sweden Goes Blu-ray

Following the Warner Brother's announcement, Swedish film companies SF and Scanbox have announced that they are scrapping all plans to release films on HD DVD, and will release exclusively on the Blu-ray format. Scanbox is expected to release their first HD titles in April.

Frågan är om det är en fördel eller nackdel för blu-ray. Scanbox dvd-releaser är fruktansvärt dåliga. Bara söka på scanbox här på forumet så hittar man div. missnöjda forumsmedlemmar. T.ex. https://www.minhembi...showtopic=19155

Men de kanske kan nå normal bild- och ljudkvalité på blu-ray nu då deras dvd var inte mycket bättre än vhs:)

Tycker Scanbox har gett ut många usla dvd utgåvor hoppas verkligen Blu-ray utgåvorna blir bättre...

Tja, om dom följer sitt gamla mönster så tar dom sin Deer Hunter-DVD och skalar upp den till HD-upplösning fast med en bra bitrate. Dolby Digital-ljudet på DVD:n portar dom direkt till 5.1 PCM. Då ser specifikationen bra ut i alla fall, även om resultatet blir helt förjämrans dåligt.

Ja, exakt! Hifiklubben har en pinsamt dålig kunskap när det kommer till HD, stod i butiken och kollade på lite möbler häromdagen och hörde hur en säljare från Hifiklubben stod och ljög för en kund om HD spelare och receivers. Svenska handlare känns väldigt okunniga och ointresserade överlag när det kommer till HD.

Samsung Sued Over Defective Blu-ray Players

A class action lawsuit filed earlier this week (.pdf) against Samsung claims the company has knowingly sold defective Blu-ray players to the public since June 2006.

The lead plaintiff in the case, Bob McGovern, says he purchased his BD-01200 Samsung Blu-ray player last summer and was subsequently unable to view "numerous Blu-ray disc titles," a fact he attributes to the player's "defective design and/or manufacture."

Lead attorneys in the case also note that there have since been a number of similar complaints levied against the company concerning the inoperability of certain Buy-ray disc titles. In some cases, Samsung has also verified that it does not intend to provide future firmware updates to correct these issues…and hence the lawsuit.

Neither Samsung nor McGovern's attorneys immediately responded to our request for comment.

At this point, the lawsuit sounds like it may have something to do with last year's BD+ fiasco. BD+ is an anti-copy DRM technology that caused considerable headaches for consumers with Blu-ray players last October. It's effectively a small virtual machine embedded in authorized players that lets content providers include executable programs on Blu-ray discs. Those programs can monitor to see if a player has been tampered with and, if necessary, execute native code to patch an otherwise insecure system. After hackers successfully cracked the AACS DRM protection scheme last year, BD+ was rushed out to titles shortly after the spec was finalized.

As Ars Technica previously reported, two Blu-ray titles in particular, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and The Day After Tomorrow, failed to play on a number of Blu-ray players, including Samsung's BD-P1200.

After following a long list of URLs and redirects provided by Samsung, owners discovered there was simply no new firmware to download for the player.

It should be noted that other players seemed to have no problem with the above mentioned Blu-ray discs. The PS3 as well as various other Sony and Panasonic models were able to play the titles without incident, but only after owners downloaded a firmware updates provided by those companies.

The underlying problem in all of this is that because players, specs and DRM schemes are constantly evolving, manufacturers are increasingly reliant on firmware updates. As the Samsung lawsuit seems to indicate, not all of them seem to embrace this state of affairs.

When compatibility issues arise, manufacturers often blame the movie studios. Movie studios, in turn, blame the manufacturers. It's a nice little circle of finger pointing that in the end, only serves to piss off consumers and promote lawsuits.

Jag förstår frustationen hos många som har en 1200 och nu agerar för att sätta press på Samsung.
Min BD-P1200 är inte rollig och man vet inte vilka nya filmer med Reg A som man vågar köpa, för risken är stor att filmen i fråga inte går att spela i maskinen. Efter flera månader släpptes en uppdatering som gjorde att man kunde spela POTC AWE, men den nya 3:10 to Yuma som dom även lovat att fixa till, funkar fortfarande inte. I samma vevan som uppdateringen kom ut till Blu-ray spelaren, släpptes filmen Across the Universe...den går inte heller att spela...
Både jag och HD-Ready har skrivt en del om det i Samsung BD-P1200 tråden.

Jag tycker att det är bra att några har reagerat och ger Samsung en spark i baken, för deras kundbemötande har varit under all kritik enligt folk som skrivit i forumen på Hidefdigest och Blu-ray.com.

Vi som köpt spelarna via import (mitt fall via Swedisc) lär väl knappast få någon ersättning, eftersom spelarna var tänkta för de Amerikanska och Kanadensiska marknaderna, men det ska bli intressant att följa utvecklingen.

Min lokala ICA Maxi har nyligen gått från ett fåtal Blu-ray filmer inlåsta i en glasmonter till drygt ett 10-tal placerade lätt tillgängliga mitt i DVD avdelningen. Det är dock en bit kvar till 2 för 199:-.... snarare 1 för 269:- Däremot lär medvetenheten om Blu-ray hos allmänheten öka när filmerna syns mer.

Netflix blir blu-ray exklusiva

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With the industry now having picked a winner in the face-off between the two competing high- definition DVD formats, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), the world's largest online movie rental service, today said that it will move toward stocking high-def DVDs exclusively in the Blu-ray format.

Citing the decision by four of the six major movie studios to publish high-def DVD titles only in the Sony-developed Blu-ray format, Netflix said that as of now it will purchase only Blu-ray discs and will phase out by roughly year's end the alternative high-def format, HD DVD, developed by Toshiba.

Since the first high-definition DVDs came on the market in early 2006, Netflix has stocked both formats. But the company said that in recent months the industry has stated its clear preference for Blu-ray and that it now makes sense for the company to initiate the transition to a single format.

"The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "We're now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def. Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly. These factors could well lead to another decade of disc-based movie watching as the consumer's preferred means."

Added Mr. Sarandos: "From the Netflix perspective, focusing on one format will enable us to create the best experience for subscribers who want high- definition to be an important part of how they enjoy our service."

While only a portion of Netflix subscribers have elected to receive high- def DVDs, a majority of those subscribers have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD. As part of the transition to Blu-ray, the company said it will acquire no new HD DVDs but that its current HD DVD inventory would continue to rent until the discs' natural life cycle takes them out of circulation in the coming months.
