Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End - Blu-ray

Bifogad fil  SCORE.PNG   21,57K   0 Antal nerladdningar

The Movie Itself is the third film in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. It starts us off almost exactly where the second film left things off. The whole cast returns to reprise their roles. Namely “Captain Jack Sparrow” (played by Johnny Depp), “Elizabeth Swann” (played by Keira Knightley), “Will Turner” (played by Orlando Bloom) and “Captain Barbossa” (played by Geoffrey Rush). The plot to the film is far from simple, in fact I’ll get more into that in my closing statements.

Captain Jack Sparrow has been stranded (trapped) on a sea of sand known as “Davey Jones’ Locker.” It’s up to Elizabeth, Will and Barbossa (in a very shaky alliance) to go on a quest to find and rescue Jack. The film includes the obvious return of “Davey Jones” (played by Bill Nighy) and “Lord Cutler Beckett” (played by Tom Hollander) who also make an alliance. A new character is introduced named “Captain Sao Feng” (played by international martial arts star Chow Yun-Fat). His character has only a small role in the film honestly and I was really left wondering why they even included the character to begin with. After watching the film now, there’s a lot of things I didn’t care for in this third installment and I’ll begin to explain why.

Considering this film is rumored to be the final chapter in this franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” when compared to other recent trilogy titles, is better than most others. But when compared to the first two in the trilogy, I just found something that was kind of lacking about this chapter. Perhaps it was the length of the film. Running at a whopping 2 HOURS 48 MINUTES, the film took too long to get into anything of major value. It really seems that the filmmakers went a tad bit “overboard” (pun intended) with this film and didn’t care about the runtime or drawn out overly dramatic points of the film that result from it.

Had it not been for the longer runtime, I could’ve seen myself enjoying this one a bit more. However, I guess that IMDB was right in that this is the worst of the series. For shame too as this could have been something oh so special. Instead the film remains the title I’ll watch the least out of the three as in terms of the quality to the film itself. It does make for on awesome Blu-ray Disc though I will definitely say, “Kudos to Disney.”

Video Quality on this release is 1080p in AVC MPEG-4 on a BD-50 (50 gigabyte Dual-Layered Blu-ray Disc). As this film like the other 2 in the franchise was shot in High Definition it’s safe to say you won’t be noticing any film grain or noise in this transfer at all. If you do they were digitally added most likely. The blacks are absolutely the definition of solid. The dark scenes look absolutely wonderful and hold no artifact or pixilation problems in any form or fashion. The flesh tones are excellent and the color palette is very rich and vibrant.

Keira Knightley looks absolutely breathtaking even in the drab at times costumes she’s in. I honestly think this is easily the most beautiful she’s looked in any of the “Pirates” films yet. She herself is truly a sight to behold. The action scenes look spectacular and the computer animation has a perfect seamless blend that doesn’t seem fake in high definition. This all combined with the awesome locations that serve as backdrops to the film makes for one awesome high definition visual presentation.

Overall there is just honestly nothing to complain about what-so-ever in this video transfer, it’s flawless. This is truly the definition of “Reference Material” and some of the finest at that. This will easily be my new “demo disc” to show off Blu-ray Disc to friends.

Audio Quality on this release is in Uncompressed Linear PCM 5.1 @4.6Mbps & Dolby Digital 5.1 @448kbps. I’m start things off by saying that the PCM track found on here is sure to rock your system. It in fact at 65 on my Onkyo receiver knocked my case (with the 2nd disc in it) for the film off my right front speaker only 16 minutes into the film. This has an amazing dynamic range and excellent rear channel presence throughout the film. Dialogue is perfectly driven at all times so you won’t need to be adjusting the volume.

The musical Score by legendary composer Hans Zimmer adds a lot to the film and sounds absolutely brilliant in the PCM 5.1 mix especially. Other things like the sounds of explosions, gunfire, the sound of being underwater, waves crashing, sword fights and what have you all sound extremely lifelike and really do a great job of getting you in to the vibe of the film. Audio quality-wise (just like video quality-wise as I said) this is totally “Reference Material” and definitely a great “demo disc” to show off your sound system. This is easily worthy of the “5 Star Rating” it receives. Very impressive PCM 5.1 mix found here. WOW! My ears are still ringing from those action scenes.

Bonus Materials are included on both the first disc (the BD-50 with the film) and on a 2nd BD-25 (25 gigabyte Blu-ray Disc). All bonus materials are presented in AVC MPEG-4 High Definition video and Dolby Digital 5.1 @448kbps sound. Our old friend “Jolly Roger” is back as the guide through the menus. You’re again (just as on the first two films) given first the option to play the movie or goto the full menu. This is pretty self-explanatory. I’ll keep the bonus materials separated as they appear on each disc so things don’t get confusing. Here goes.

Disc 1 only includes one bonus material in the form of a “Bloopers of a Caribbean” (5 minutes) filled with some funny outtakes that are a tad bit short but still worth watching.

Disc 2 contains the following bonus materials:

* “Enter the Maelstrom” which is an interactive BD-Java feature exclusive to Blu-ray Disc. It was developed by Panasonic Hollywood Labs who also handles the AVC video compression in the transfer of the film. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer hosts you on the “making of” this scene.
* Deleted Scenes:
“I Like Riddles” (1 minute)
“Two Captains, One Ship” (1 minute) “Anatomy of a Scene: The Maelstrom” (19 minutes) is a detailed look at what Disney claims in the press release “one of cinema’s most complex and impressive action set pieces.” That’s a pretty bold statement, I guess they plan to take the “Pepsi Challenge” too.
* “Keith & The Captain: On-Set with Johnny and the Rock Legend” (4 minutes) is a revealing look at the personal relationship between Rock star Keith Richards (of “The Rolling Stones“) and the film’s star Johnny Depp. This is all because Richards does a cameo in the film.
* “The Tale of Many Jacks” (4 minutes) is a little “behind-the-scenes” look at the “mind-blowing FX” that went into making all the multiple versions of “Captain Jack Sparrow” a reality using computer animation in the film and such.
* “Hoist the Colors” (4 minutes) shows us this inspiration for the “Hoist the Colors” original composition. This haunting shanty was an anthem for all pirates across the seven seas.
* “Masters of Design” is split up into five individual documentaries that highlight the talented design teams that worked on this huge blockbuster film. The are as follows:
“#1: Jim Brykit and The Map” (6 minutes)
“#2: Crash McCreary and the Krusty Pirates” (5 minutes)
“#3: Rick Heinrichs and the Singapore Set” (5 minutes)
“#4: Penny Rose and the Captain Teague Costumes” (3 minutes)
“#5: Chris Peck and the Pirate Code Book” (5 minutes) “Inside the Brethren Court” (10 minutes) takes a look at the legendary pirate lords and their costumes, origins and personalties.
* “The World of Chow Yun-Fat” (4 minutes) shows us a closer look of “Captain Sao Feng” that Chow Yun-Fat international martial arts sensation plays in the film. He also talks a bit about his early stages of his career in film.
* “The Pirate Maestro: The Music of Hans Zimmer” (10 minutes) is pretty self-explanatory. It showcases the renowned composer who did the Score to the film.

* “Easter Eggs” can be found by pressing left on the directional pad in the menu on the 2nd disc. I didn’t try this on the 1st disc yet but who knows it may have some on it. This is the exact same way you get to the “easter eggs” on another recent Disney Blu-ray release, “Ratatouille.” Once you’ve made it to the “white crabs” menu that houses these hidden bonus materials use your Blu-ray Player’s remote control directional pad to find the items in the form of black circles. Enjoy!

Overall the bonus materials are lacking one important thing, a Director audio Commentary. Better yet “Cine-Explore” like featured on the latest Disney Blu-ray releases like “Cars” and “Ratatouille” would have really been nice and made me consider a full “5 Star Rating.” Also the Theatrical Trailer isn’t included either. The lack of these isn’t totally a big disappointment by any means though. The bonus materials present are all in High Def video and 5.1 surround so I really can’t complain too much.

"As this film like the other 2 in the franchise was shot in High Definition it’s safe to say you won’t be noticing any film grain or noise in this transfer at all. If you do they were digitally added most likely."?

Specs in For 'Damages: First Season' Blu-ray

Full specs are in for the upcoming Blu-ray edition of the hit Glenn Close legal series 'Damages,' with Sony announcing even more bonus features than originally indicated.

As we've previously reported, Sony recently issued an early alert to retailers that it planned to bring 'Damages: The Complete First Season' to Blu-ray on January 29, 2008, day-and-date with the DVD version.

Though that retail announcement indicated relatively few supplemental materials, the studio has now issued full details, promising a much more robust supplemental package.

In addition to all sixteen first season episodes spread across three BD-50 dual-layer discs, the set will now also include audio commentaries with cast & crew on select episodes, four featurettes ("Willful Acts," "Behind-the-Scenes," "Understanding Class Action," "Trust No One"), deleted scenes and a blooper reel.

Tech specs include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and standard Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround only.

Sony has set a suggested retail price for the Blu-ray set of $79.95

HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on December 4th, 2007 (US)

POTC: At World's EndBlu-ray picks up where it left off a few weeks ago on its way to 400 titles by the end of the year with a mix of releases. The first comedy for the blu camp in some time, is Superbad, and the biggest title of the week is long awaited day and date release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Fox, on the other hand continues to waiver, not only did they drop Independence Day from the release list this week, but for whatever reason they decided not to bring the sixth season of 24 to Blu-ray despite releasing it on DVD.

HD DVD has two exclusives this week, first up is the documentary, Arctic Tale and the first season of the very popular Battlestar Galactica. While we can't wait to see how well these titles sell, next week is the big week when the Harry Potter series hits both formats at the same time as the latest installment of Borne and High School Musical.

HD DVD 346 vs Blu-ray 377

Blu-ray

* 20 Million Miles to Earth (Sony)
* Cast Away (Fox)
* Elton 60 - Live at Madison Square Garden (Universal Music)
* Masters of Horror: Season One - Vol. Four (Starz)

* Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Buena Vista)
* Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid (Eagle Rock)
* Superbad (Sony)

Elton John Throws Blu-ray Bash with 'Elton 60'

Captain Fantastic is due to make his high-def debut this week with the Blu-ray bow of the concert spectacular 'Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden.'

Captured entirely with high-def cameras, 'Elton 60' documents John's record-breaking 60th sellout performance at Madison Square Garden, which was held on his 60th birthday earlier this year. The once in a lifetime concert features performances of a staggering 33 classic tunes, and one of the most extravagant stage productions in the singer's legendary 30-plus year musical career.

First issued on standard DVD in early October, this Blu-ray edition marks the next-gen debut for the Island/Mercury label, which plans to release the disc December 4. (Note that distribution of the disc will be handled by Universal Music Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vivendi. UMG is not directly affiliated with HD DVD-exclusive Universal Studios.)

Tech specs for the Blu-ray version of 'Elton 60' include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video (1.78:1 widescreen), and two flavors of uncompressed PCM audio -- 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Stereo.

Although the two-disc DVD contained a wealth of rare vintage television performances by John, at press time there were no announced extras for the Blu-ray.

UMG has set a suggested list price of $24.95 for the Blu-ray.

'30 Days of Night' to Bite Into Blu-ray

In an early alert to retailers, Sony has revealed it plans to bring the hit vampire thriller '30 Days of Night' to Blu-ray this February.

Based on the popular graphic novel of the same name, '30 Days of Night' scared up nearly $50 million at the domestic box office this past October. Although Sony has yet to issue an official press release, the studio has informed retailers that the Josh Hartnett-starrer will sink its teeth into both Blu-ray and standard-def DVD on February 19, 2008.

Given the early nature of the announcement, there were no tech specs nor supplement details available at press time. However, both the Blu-ray and DVD are earmarked as special editions, so fans should expect plenty of extras. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted.

Suggested retail for the Blu-ray is $38.95.

Disney Confirms Packaging Gaffe on 'At World's End' Blu-ray

Bifogad fil  POC3_AWE.jpeg   14,5K   0 Antal nerladdningar

An unusual packaging blunder had early adopters scratching their heads on the eve of Disney's highly anticipated 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' Blu-ray release.

Due to hit stores today, the third flick in the 'Pirates' series is one of Disney's biggest Blu-ray guns of Q4, but as several eagle-eyed tipsters pointed out to us over the last few days, the back of the box promotes video specs with considerably less firepower than is the industry norm.

Specifically, the packaging for 'At World's End' indicates a 1080i/MPEG-4 encode for the main feature -- this, despite the fact that the high-profile release had been announced as sporting a full 1080p transfer. (Although 1080i is not unusual when it comes to supplemental material, true 1080p is standard for encoding of the main feature itself among major studio releases. Indeed, all of Disney's previous Blu-ray releases have featured full 1080p video.)

So what gives? We here at High-Def Digest received our own final copy of 'At World's End' last week from Disney, and after putting it through its paces on multiple players, we found the encode of the feature film to be true 1080p, contradicting the packaging.

We've since contacted Disney about the apparent labeling snafu, and a rep confirmed that copies of the release were indeed incorrectly marked as 1080i. At press time, the studio was not planning a recall of the mislabeled copies of 'At World's End,' but said that the error would be corrected on future pressings of the title.

This is not the first time that Disney has encountered rough waters with the 'Pirates' franchise on high-def. As we've previously reported, the studio's Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' suffered from framing issues that wrecked havoc with the film's original theatrical compositions. (Disney has since announced that it plans to fix the issue in future pressings, and will offer a disc exchange program for affected consumers.)

Packaging gaffe aside, our own Peter Bracke gave 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' the thumbs up in his recently-posted review of the Blu-ray disc. To read Peter's complete review, click here.

Cast Away (2002) BD

Bifogad fil  CABD.jpg   27,14K   0 Antal nerladdningar

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

'Cast Away' first hit standard DVD back in 2001, and at the time was widely considered to be one of the best transfers around. I gave that disc a quick spin before watching this new Blu-ray, and was surprised by how well it has held up. That gave this new 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode a great deal to live up to, but I'm happy to report that it's more than up to the challenge.

Robert Zemeckis brings all of his considerable visual talents to 'Cast Away,' as well as the latest in CGI technology (at least circa 2000). As such, the film is visually sumptuous all the way through -- particularly the second act on the island. The level of depth and detail reaches fantastic, and the color saturation is exquisite. The shimmering waters are a gorgeous, crystal clear blue, and the expansive vistas are flush with deep jungle greens. Just as impressive are darker scenes, with shadow delineation holding up wonderfully even in scenes with minimal light sources (such as moonlight or a bonfire). Yes, there is grain in the picture, but all of the positive elements can elevate 'Cast Away' to the level of demo material.

It's not really a complaint, but the opening and closing acts of "Cast Away' a bit more plain, at least in terms of bright colors and picturesque visuals. However, this is obviously intentional, and even here the transfer doesn't falter. The visual palette is muted but fleshtones hold firm, and there is still a great deal of depth and dimensionality throughout. The presentation is also nice and sharp, with no irritating edge enhancement or other compression issues. Now seven years old, 'Cast Away' fully qualifies as a Blu-ray catalog title, but it's one of the best I've seen yet from Fox.

The Audio: Rating the Sound

As much as I loved the video, I may love the audio even more. 'Cast Away' boasts masterful sound design, delivering a palpable sense of atmosphere without resorting to over-the-top, sledgehammer sonic tactics. Even better, this Blu-ray edition sees the film receive its first-ever high-res audio track -- a truly superlative DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround mix (48kHz/24-bit).

The middle island section is where the film truly comes alive, with the constantly-sustained ambiance a remarkable accomplishment. Even the lapping of waves can send chills up the spine, so exquisite are the delicate aural qualities of the rear soundstage. It has real heft and presence, but also such fine attention to detail that's utterly realistic. It truly feels as if the island is a living creature.

Although 'Cast Away' is not a film of action, it does contain one scene that will now easily rank among my top bits of demo material: the plane crash. Zemeckis is a master manipulator as he lulls us into a false sense of security with the serenity of the final minutes before the astonishing sequence, which makes the crash even more overwhelming. The sheer force and impact of the sonics in the scene and the highly immersive 360-degree effect are true stunners. This sequence, combined with the island scenes that follow, are a master course in all the facets that make for a reference-quality soundtrack, and make 'Cast Away' a must-listen.

Kevin Smith's 'Dogma' Headed For Blu-ray

Buddy Christ fans, mark your calendars: Sony has announced Kevin Smith's controversial satire 'Dogma' for Blu-ray this February.

Inspiring critical hosannas and moral outrage in equal measure upon its original 1998 theatrical release, 'Dogma' remains Smith's high-grossing film ever, earning over $30 million at the domestic box office. High-def fans wondering what all the fuss is about will get the chance to find out on February 12, 2008, when Sony debuts the Ben Affleck-Matt Damon starrer on Blu-ray disc.

The studio has not yet announced tech specs or supplemental details for 'Dogma,' but given that all of Smith's past disc releases have been chock full of extras, we're optimistic that this one won't be the exception. Stay tuned for complete specs in the coming days.

Suggested retail for the Blu-ray has been set at $28.99.

Format War: Interactivity vs HD supplements

Next Tuesday, the biggest dual format HD release since 300 hits the streets; and once again, we just can't wait to compare red vs blu. For the most part, Warner has always offered the same content on both format, and if anything, Blu-ray fans have complained that Warner doesn't take advantage of Blu-ray's extra capacity. Well, with Order of the Phoenix, Warner has pulled out the stops and has pitted interactivity vs HD supplemental video, because while the HD DVD version includes Warner's IME and web content, the Blu-ray version includes HD supplements and a 44 minute high-def TV special called, The Hidden Secrets of Harry Potter -- that was left out of the HD DVD version completely. The other big difference enabled by Blu-ray's additional capacity is an extensive list of foreign language surround sound tracks and sub-titles -- at the same time the HD DVD is a combo disc without the $10 premium. So dual format owners will have to choose between interactivity and HD supplements -- or maybe they'll just choose to save $5 and go with the Blu-ray version. We don't know about anyone else, but we can't wait to see what Nielsen VideoScan results have to say about this.

Lionsgate, Sony to bow first BD-Live titles in January

DEC. 5 | LOS ANGELES — Lionsgate and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring out the first Web-enabled Blu-ray Disc titles in January, even though hardware that can fully playback BD-Live interactivity has not yet been confirmed.

War and Saw IV, streeting from Lionsgate on Blu-ray and standard-definition DVD on Jan. 1 and Jan. 22, respectively, will carry networking features, confirmed the studio’s senior VP of DVD production, Miguel Casillas, during a panel discussion at Tuesday’s High-Def 2.0 conference here.

Casillas noted that with Saw IV, users will be able to share content through their Blu-ray players’ Web connections, but he did not elaborate further. He did not describe War’s interactivity in detail.

Sony executive VP of advanced technologies Don Eklund declined to specify titles but said Web-enabled features will represent a major theme in the studio’s 2008 Blu-ray slate.

“We have an aggressive program underway to use network capabilities on our titles next year,” said Eklund.

War and Saw IV will likely become the first networked titles released for Blu-ray. Earlier this year, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced Sleeping Beauty and National Treasure would boast this interactivity, but they are not expected until later in 2008.

An onslaught of Web-enabled Blu-ray titles could prove an important weapon in the format war, as the HD DVD camp has touted its own networking abilities as a key advantage over Blu-ray. As Web connection comes standard in all HD DVD players, a number of titles on that format already offer networking interactivity, including the industry’s first e-commerce feature on Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s HD DVD release of Evan Almighty.

Studio executive panelists as well as manufacturers speaking at the conference acknowledged the current absence of BD-Live players. Yet, Eklund said Sony and other studios anticipate that the PlayStation 3 will soon become one such player, likely through firmware updates, as the console already allows users to download game-related content.

Eklund added that firmware should be released for the PS3 this month that would upgrade the console to fully playback picture-in-picture interactivity, another type of high-def bonus feature that is popular in HD DVD titles but not yet available with Blu-ray titles due to few compatible players.

“It’s the studio’s assumption” that PS3 will be a BD-Live player, said Eklund.

Overall, Blu-ray will remain an important part of the studio’s product pipeline in 2008.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Disney will increase the number of releases in the format next year.

“We’re going to be extending our day-and-date releases and finding appropriate catalog titles,” said Simon Swart, executive VP and general manager North America at Fox. He added that the studio wants “to see what this format can do that really blows DVD away.”

Disney general manager North America Lori MacPherson added, “We want to keep offering a step beyond what people have seen.”
