...I left the event, glad to see that Sony, as well as the other studios - most notably Disney - were so confident with the direction things are heading in. Not only that, but I'm glad that we're coming closer than ever to a single-format world. No matter how affordable or excellent HD DVD could also be, one format is the only way forward. Hopefully, the BDA can convince enough customers that their "Upconverting" DVD players are no match for a proper High Definition disc format, and that they should feed their HD-starved display some Blu-ray Disc...

Wal-Mart puts stake through HD DVD's heart

"Things have gone from bad to worse for HD DVD in the space of one week.

Wal-Mart announced Friday morning that it, too, has chosen a side in the battle for high-definition video supremacy: by June it will only stock Blu-ray Disc players.

A buyer in Wal-Mart's video division wrote this morning on her Wal-Mart Checkout blog that the retail giant had made the decision following Netflix and Best Buy's high-profile announcements that they will exclusively stock Blu-ray products.

Wrote Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart: "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players."

"So," she continues, not mincing words, "if you bought the HD (DVD) player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player..."

That might be the best option at this point, as the dominoes keep falling in Blu-ray's favor. While Netflix and Best Buy were pretty damning evidence that the end was near, now it's glaringly obvious: it's over for HD DVD. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that consumers will automatically start buying Blu-ray players. As mentioned many times before here, prices will have to continue to fall on both Blu-ray players and packaged media for there to be any sort of mainstream adoption of the format.

There are rumors that Toshiba might soon be declaring defeat: The Hollywood Reporter has sources telling it that Toshiba, the main backer of the HD DVD, might drop its allegiance with the format in the next few weeks.

Toshiba denies it, but stay tuned. There's likely much more to come in this drama."

Blu-ray Disc Wal-Mart has confirmed with Blu-ray.com that beginning in June the world's largest retailer will only stock Blu-ray players and movies. Over the next few months, they will phase out all HD DVD products and reorganize their stores to focus on Blu-ray. This move comes days after similar statements of support for Blu-ray by Internet movie rental site Netflix and retailer Best Buy.

Gary Severson, senior vice president, Home Entertainment, Wal-Mart, U.S. commented, "We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases. With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term. We anticipate enhancing our selection with continued great values in hi-definition Blu-ray products, so our customers can further enhance their entertainment experience at home."

This is just the latest in a series of shifts towards either Blu-ray support or exclusivity since Warner Brothers announced in January that they would go Blu-ray exclusive in June.

Earlier today, sources reported that Toshiba would soon be announcing that they would drop support for HD DVD. No official statement has come from them, but without support from retailers, it will probably come sooner than later."

Retailer will only sell Sony's hi-def movie discs, phasing out Toshiba's HD-DVD discs in its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores this year.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- National discount retailer Wal-Mart announced Friday that it had decided to only sell Sony's Blu-ray hi-definition movie discs, and will phase out Toshiba's competing HD-DVD formatted discs over the next several months.

Wal-Mart said that by June, its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores would sell only Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray hardware players. Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD format are not compatible.

"We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's Senior Vice President of Home Entertainment in a statement.

Apple TV vs. Blu-ray: How do they stack up?
Wal-Mart said it would continue selling HD-DVD products, but over the next 30 days, customers will see a significant shift in emphasis to Blu-ray in both brick-and-mortar stores and online. The retailer said it will continue to sell DVDs and standard-definition hardware.

Wal-Mart is the latest movie vendor to choose Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Earlier this week, online movie rental company Netflix (NFLX) announced its support for Blu-ray, and said it would phase out HD-DVD as well. Video publishers Walt Disney (DIS, Fortune 500), Sony's Sony Pictures, News Corp.'s (NWS, Fortune 500) Twentieth Century Fox, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have all endorsed Blu-ray.

In a rivalry that mirrors the Betamax-VHS dispute of the 1970s, Sony (SNE) and Toshiba have been battling each other to define the industry's hi-definition video standard. The winner will see a boost in the sale of hardware needed to play the hi-definition discs.

Det största problemet är att det kostar så otroligt mycket att ha en världspremiär för varje film då man måste göra en fysisk kopia till varje biograf. Därför så återanvänds filmen i Europa efter att de har visats i USA. Om alla biografer var digitala (helst 4k) så skulle det troligtvis finnas mindre incitament till regionskodning.

Ett annan orsak är att utanför USA så har mindre distributörer rättigheter till filmen vilket kan gör att de vill skydda sina rättigheter.

Niveus pledges allegiance to Blu-ray, bids adieu to HD DVD

Not like it's any huge surprise or anything -- after all, the HD DVD deathwatch is already in full effect -- but Niveus has just informed us that due to "customer demand and format war influences," it will be adding support for Blu-ray and "ceasing production of HD DVD-based servers." According to CEO Tim Cutting, "incorporating Blu-ray into its offerings has always been part of the plan, but the demand from its customers, market trends, and recent announcements expedited its decision to come to market with Blu-ray support sooner rather than later." Adding more salt to the wound, he continued by saying that "while it has stood behind HD DVD as a viable high-definition platform, company engineers have been running Blu-ray in its testing facilities and are very impressed with the performance and integration with its servers." Another one bites the proverbial dust, eh?

Varför regionskodas gamla katalogtitlar? Det blir väl inga nya världspremiärer på dessa iallafall!

Varför ska vi gå miste om dom titlarna om man bara har en region B spelare?
Folk är vana att köpa regionsfria dvd spelare.
Varför ska vi nu nöja oss med regionslåsta Blu-ray spelare?

What this means is that Paramount and Universal now have no choice but to make Blu-ray Disc support announcements of their own and soon, as they're currently backing a format that retailers will no longer carry. As such, you can expect those announcements VERY soon, almost certainly in the next few weeks. Frankly, we'd be surprised if the final scene of this messy opus took longer than the end of March to play out.

Digital Playground Switches to Blu

HD DVD has another defection on its hands, though it’s not making headlines on national cable news.

Adult video producer Digital Playground had been releasing a majority of its high-def titles on HD DVD. However, it confirmed Feb. 15 that all future high-def titles would be on Blu-ray Disc.

Compared to Warner, Netflix, Best Buy and Wal-Mart, it may be a minor victory for Blu-ray, but it’s an important one, stresses Ali Joone, feature director and founder of the company.

“A year ago it was very, very difficult, if not impossible, to do Blu-ray,” he said. “There were very few replicators for the format, and companies like Disney and Sony prevented adult titles from making it to Blu-ray.

“But in the past few months, it’s changed.”

Saying it’s responsible for four of every five high-def adult titles sold, Digital Playground looked at Nielsen VideoScan data showing 3:1 Blu-ray sales over rival HD DVD, saw positive results for its first Blu-ray title, Pirates, and watched as major retailers bailed on HD DVD. All of that resulted in DP’s Blu-ray decision, Joone said.

“We feel there’s a group of collector’s out there who didn’t exist before high-def,” he said. “I’m not going to go back and replace all of my DVDs on high-def, but there are some films you just have to have on Blu-ray, and we know the same holds true for adult.”

Island Fever 4 and Babysitters, two adult titles already on HD DVD, will be the company’s next Blu-ray releases, followed by eight new Blu-ray titles every month, Joone said. The company has more than 200 films shot in high-def, all of which could eventually see a Blu-ray release, he added.

Toshiba has been in heated competition with other Japanese electronic giants such as Sony, Panasonic and Hitachi, which produce the high-definition DVD format, Blu-ray.

The Blu-ray format now makes up 90 percent of the Japanese high-definition DVD market after winning last year's price war for DVD recorders and players.

Toshiba faced even more difficulty when the major movie studio, Warner Brothers Entertainment, announced that it planned to use only the Blu-ray format for its movie software.

The company said it will continue to sell HD-DVD products for a while but will stop further development of HD DVD. Meanwhile, it said its DVD factories in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, would be closed.

Market observers said that Toshiba could suffer a loss of hundreds of millions of US dollars."

Självklart kommer Transformers komma på BD. Det vi kan spekulera om istället är väl i så fall när. Samma sak gäller ju Bourne och de andra HD-DVD exklusiva titlarna. Hoppas att kvallen blir lika bra på BD, men de ser nog till att inte slarva till de här titlarna speciellt. Transformers är den bästa kombinationen av ljud/bild jag har sett hemma hos mig (jag har både HD och BD). Bourne trilogin går inte av för hackor dem heller.

Vad jag väntar på nu är att man börjar släppa lite TV-serier på BD, de kanske vågar nu när kriget är slut. Dexter, Stargate, Farscape, Babylon 5, (hela) Smallville, (hela) Lost, X-Files etc. Så länge man gör bra kvalitet och inte bara överför DVD-mastringen till ett nytt format dvs. Ser även fram emot en nyutgåva av Battlestar Galactica.

Yes, you read that right. We have yet to officially confirm this, but we're working to get more information on it. For the record, I was unable to get a response from Paramount on Friday (they seem to be in a bit of a media "lockdown" mode at the moment - which is probably no surprise given last week's events)."

Rumours were circulating today that Microsoft is set to dump HD DVD and bring out a Blu ray Xbox 360 by as early as May 2008. The move will allow the Company to go head to head with the Sony PS3 gaming console which has been credited with being one of the main reasons that retailers have preferred Blu ray over Toshiba’s HD DVD.
Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft have already configured a standalone Blu ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months.

The Company has also been working on a built in Blu ray player however insiders are claiming that Microsoft see the HD format battle moving online with consumers offered 1080p movie and content files as a download as opposed to having to buy a HD or Blu ray DVD.

Both Intel and Microsoft have been supporters of the HD DVD format that is set to be killed off this week.

The Company has also held discussions with several OEM manufacturers of media centres with nearly all of them telling the software Company that they are set to move to Blu ray configured Media Centres within the next month.

Late last week US Media Centre maker Niveus dumped HD DVD in favour of Blu ray.

The Company VP of marketing Brian Paper said that Niveus had received support from Microsoft and Intel when implementing HD DVD. The format wasn't pushed on Niveus, he said, adding that the commitment in both Intel and Microsoft "isn't religious For HD DVD".
