Here's the full report, a much *clearer* picture.
http://www.displayse...nd_insights.asp
AUSTIN, TEXAS, January 23, 2008—DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting, has reported that game console-related hardware still dominates global shipments with a cumulative 85% share during Q1-Q3’07, based on 2007 historical results compiled for its upcoming Quarterly Global Next Generation DVD and Game Platform Hardware Shipment and Forecast Report.
DisplaySearch reported that console-related hardware from both the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats exhibited revenue growth over three times greater than the standalone players for each format from Q2’07 to Q3’07. The continued reliance on the console market indicates that the standalone Next Generation DVD segment remains in its early stages worldwide.
North America represents a growing majority of the market. During the Q1-Q3’07 period, North America consistently took both unit and revenue share from the rest of the world. North America increased its share of global Next Generation DVD hardware shipments, including console-related devices, to over 80% in Q3’07. Much of this can be attributed to aggressive pricing and promotions in North America from both formats.
Toshiba was the leading vendor of standalone devices worldwide during the Q1-Q3’07 period, cumulatively accounting for nearly 64% more standalone units than all Blu-ray brands combined. This can largely be attributed to aggressive pricing in North America. In Japan however, Sony was the leader in standalone device shipments thanks to the company’s strength in the Blu-ray recorder segment.
Sony dominated the Blu-ray market with a 97% worldwide share during Q1-Q3’07, thanks to the Playstation 3. As the console strengthens in 2008 and beyond, Sony’s firm hold over the Blu-ray market is expected to continue.
Three companies command nearly all of the worldwide market. Examining the cumulative market for Q1-Q3’07, including console hardware, Sony, Microsoft, and Toshiba combined had a 98% share of the world’s hardware shipments. All other vendors each generated 1% or less of worldwide shipments.
According to Paul Erickson, Director of DVD and HD Market Research at DisplaySearch, “The market for Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD continues to grow, but our research continues to indicate that this market will face challenges not only in capturing mainstream sales, but also in expanding beyond a hardware ecosystem dominated by primarily only three companies. Due to consumer price sensitivity and satisfaction with regular DVD in North America, the substantial growth needed for Next Generation DVD to grow beyond a niche market dominated by consoles will require time, persistence, and aggressive pricing. This is expected to be a dynamic that will persist regardless of whether the market consolidates around a single format, or continues onward with the status quo.” [/B]
DisplaySearch's Next Generation DVD market intelligence, including Blu-ray and HD DVD standalone player shipments and revenues, segmentation for game console-related hardware, rolling 16-quarter forecasts, as well as brand shares by format, region, and device type (players, recorders, and consoles), is available in the Quarterly Global Next Generation DVD and Game Platform Hardware Shipment and Forecast Report.

Burbank (CA) - Warner Home Video announced this week that it will continue to release titles on HD DVD for three weeks longer than it originally anticipated.
Earlier this month, Warner said that it is going to stop supporting HD DVD in May. However, it has now decided to push that deadline back a few weeks to be able to release more of its upcoming titles on both formats.
Despite Warner's Blu-ray exclusivity announcement, over a dozen Warner titles are still slated for release on HD DVD over the next four months. The extension of HD DVD support confirms that Twister and Bonnie & Clyde will come out on both formats instead of being Blu-ray exclusives.
Some other notable Warner titles that will still be released on both formats include Justice League: The New Frontier, I Am Legend, and August Rush.

mer infoSales data for HD-DVD and Blu-ray players and movies has been misconstrued lately by various outlets, with reports implying that HD-DVD sales have fallen at an amazing pace while Blu-ray sales have blasted through the roof.
Not so fast, says the NPD Group.
While select articles have implied that HD-DVD as a format is doomed and the sky is falling for the format's supporters, the NPD Group this afternoon reinforced that sales results from a single week do not necessarily indicate a trend, and that the week in question had several intriguing variables that have gone unreported.
The NPD Group attempted to quiet the storm of online scuttlebutt with the following statement:
"As you may have seen, there are attempts being made to portray NPD's weekly sales tracking figures for next generation DVD as a trend. We want to remind you and make clear that it is not accurate to make long term assumptions based on one week of sales -- a cautionary point that NPD has made as well.
"The facts are that during the week that is being singled out, both Blu-ray disc players and software were being given away for free with the purchase of 1080p TVs. It is also important to note that the instant rebate promotions that had previously netted Toshiba's players' MSRPs to $199 and $249 had actually ended on Jan. 5th -- causing an increase in HD DVD's MSRP back to $299 and $399 during that same week. Since Toshiba's retail price move on Jan. 13th to $149 / $199 -- Toshiba is seeing very positive sales trends at retail. This reinforces the fact that price is a significant driver of sales.
"Toshiba's HD DVD players represent a significant value to the consumer and the marketing campaign that just began is proving effective."

http://bluray.highde...dware_Lead/1403NPD: Free Blu-ray Players Contributed to Weekly Hardware Lead
That 93% lead for Blu-ray in hardware sales in the week following Warner's exclusivity announcement? NPD (the research group that tallied the numbers) says don't read too much into it.
That's according to a new article at BetaNews, which quotes an NPD official as saying that a series of free player bundles led to inflated weekly numbers for team Blu.
Explaining that the weekly data had not been approved for release by the research group, Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for NPD, cautioned against making any long-term judgments based on the weekly numbers, explaining that NPD sees large fluctuations in numbers like these each week.
Baker went on to attribute the week's Blu-ray gains to several deals from Sony, Sharp and Panasonic that saw free Blu-ray players bundled with the purchase of new HDTVs. He said that player sales for Samsung (which did not offer a free Blu-ray player deal) were "almost non-existent" for the week.
All of this is not to say that it was a good week for HD DVD hardware sales. Although Baker declined to get into specifics, he did confirm a drop in overall HD DVD player sales for the week.

Absolut!

Varför skall MS trycka in pengar utan framtida vinster?

The latest NPD numbers shows HD DVD gaining back some of the lost market share in the week ending January 19th.
As we reported yesterday Blu-ray owned week 2 with 92.53% market share according to numbers from NPD.
The numbers from week 3 (ending January 19th) had HD DVD gaining some the lost ground back. HD DVD had 34.37% against 65.63% on the Blu-ray side.
Lastly, Stephen Baker, vice president of the NPD, has said that to base sales trend on weekly sales is very uncertain. Please interpret them accordingly.
Also, NPD figures do not include sale from online giant Amazon.com.

Broadcom® Media PC Technology Significantly Improves the Mobile PC User
Experience with Cost-Efficient, Flawless Playback of High Definition Video
IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation
.
(Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless
communications, today announced that Toshiba has selected Broadcom's
recently introduced media PC technology. As one of the leading
manufacturers of personal computers in the world, Toshiba America
Information Systems, Inc. has implemented Broadcom® media PC technology
to enable high quality HD DVD playback for three recently introduced
mid-level notebook computers including the Satellite® P205, Satellite®
A205 and Qosmio® F45. Broadcom's new media PC technology delivers
flawless playback of high definition video that yields very low system
power consumption, low CPU utilization and integrates seamlessly into
Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows® XP environments.
The HD DVD optical disc format offers new and exciting features for the
gaming, storage and consumer entertainment markets such as high definition
video at 1080p resolution, picture-in-picture, high definition
multi-channel audio, 3D style graphics and user interactivity for games,
trivia, web-enabled content, etc. Up until Broadcom's recently introduced
media PC offerings, these new and exciting HD DVD capabilities required
intensive CPU processing and additional components (such as discrete
graphics processors with video hardware acceleration) that drove up the PC
cost for this level of functionality. As a result, PCs or laptops capable
of playing HD content have typically been very costly.
To address the growing consumer demand for high definition content
playback on cost effective mainstream PCs, Broadcom recently announced a
family of media PC products. Leveraging Broadcom's widely deployed and
field proven technologies in the high definition set-top box and consumer
media player markets, Broadcom's media PC technology provides the highest
quality video playback of multi-format (VC-1, H.264 and MPEG-2) HD content
for the mainstream PC market. With total power consumption of under 3
watts, Broadcom's media PC solutions help extend battery life on notebook
PCs, enabling more movie playback time.
"We are very pleased to have selected Broadcom's new media PC solution
whose capabilities and functionality is a good fit for our mainstream
notebook computers that deliver HD DVD playback," said Tsukasa Matoba,
Technology Executive at Toshiba Corporation Personal Computer & Network
Company. "Broadcom's media PC technology has superior high definition video
playback, real-time interactive content and longer battery life when
playing full length HD DVD content on our new Satellite P205 Satellite A205
and Qosmio F45 notebook PC models that provides our customers with an
exceptional, cost-effective user experience."
"Broadcom is pleased that Toshiba selected our media PC technology,
leveraging our robust and proven HD video cores," said Allen Light,
Director of Product Marketing for Broadcom's Media PC line of business. "In
comparison to other solutions in the market, our media PC technology excels
when system cost, power consumption, CPU utilization and fan noise are key
factors and Toshiba's adoption of this technology will help to popularize
HD playback among mid-level mobile PC platforms."
Broadcom's media PC solutions are available in three add-in card
formats that include the BCM970012NB for PCI Express® mini-cards; the
BCM970012PQ for PCI Express desktops; and the BCM970012IC for
ExpressCard® 34. The new technology is also offered as a chipset that
includes the BCM70010 and the BCM70012. All products are in full production
today.
Toshiba Notebook PCs with Broadcom Media PC Technology
Toshiba has recently launched two new and exciting mid-level notebook
computers that enable high quality HD DVD playback utilizing Broadcom's
media PC technology. The new mainstream notebook computers are the
Satellite P205 and Qosmio F45. The Satellite P205 notebook from Toshiba
features the latest Intel® Centrino® Duo processor for improved
computing capabilities and an HD DVD optical drive that allows users the
option of watching high definition content at a resolution of 720p on its
17-inch widescreen display. The image resolution of the Satellite P205 is
six times sharper than today's DVD format providing users with a next
generation visual experience.
The Qosmio F45 has comparable features to the Satellite P205 and
utilizes a 15.4-inch widescreen display. Additionally, the F45 is equipped
with an HDMI port and can be connected to any high definition display or
television at home, on the road or in a dorm room to deliver pure HD DVD
content without the fear of image degradation
