JVC intros first DLNA Blu-ray home theater system
JVC’s newest addition to its Sophisti line-up is the NX-BD3 Blu-ray home theater system, which is the company’s first Blu-ray system and the first dedicated Blu-ray player in the industry to feature Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compatibility via a wireless adapter update. Thanks to DLNA support, the 2.1-channel system will be able to work with other types of DLNA-certified devices such as cellphones, PCs and others to share digital content, including MPEG videos, JPEG photos and MP3/WMA music.
The NX-BD3’s internal amplifier is rated at 4x55W, with the subwoofer delivering a further 200W of bass. The two speakers sport two drivers with different material thicknesses each, allowing them to create a virtual surround sound system with a phantom center channel and virtual rear speakers. Supported audio formats will include Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro-Logic II.
The Blu-ray player will be Profile 1.1 compliant, but will not be upgradeable profile 2.0. As it is, it will support 24fps video as well as xv.Color and Deep Color via its single HDMI 1.3a output. Other connections comprise an optical audio output, analog audio input, and HDMI-CEC input. DiVX files on CD, DVD or Blu-ray will be supported. An AM/FM tuner is also built-in.
Available in gloss black only, the unit will be priced at an equivalent of nearly $1,460 when it launches in the UK this Septemberjvcbluraysystem.jpg 22,25K 0 Antal nerladdningar

Sure, it's just network attached storage, but somehow, someway, LG's dressed its NB41 Blu-ray burnin'' NAS with just enough sex, just enough appeal to coax this helpless editor into risking security's ire just to grab a few pre-IFA snaps. It's bigger than we expected -- mini-tower PC big -- but we guess those four 1TB disks need plenty of ventilation. Just check that reflection in the mirror for a sense of scale.

Sharp slims down for IFA
BD-HP21H Blu-ray player – Sharp’s first cinema-quality Blu-ray player
Whereas many Blu-ray players on market cannot release the full potential of Blu-ray discs, Sharp’s new BD-HP21H is able to produce colourful, detailed and vibrant colour. Combined with the 24-hertz frame rate – the same rate used for cinema content, any on-screen motion is rendered as smoothly and naturally as would be expected on the big screen. Designed with a 1.1 profile and with Bonusview functionality, the BD-HP21H offers users the opportunity to take advantage of picture-in-picture and simultaneous play functions to offer a more interactive viewing experience. The BD-HP21H also has a Quick-start mode designed to reduce power consumption and a Jpeg playback feature so pictures can be viewed in High-Definition quality.
Compatible with the latest High-Definition formats, and developed to incorporate Sharp’s signature black finish and slim profile, The BD-HP21H is a beautiful match for any of the new range of AQUOS LCD TVs.
Retail availability
The Sharp AQUOS XS1 and D65 series and the BD-HP21H Blu-ray player will be available in the UK from electrical retailers October 2008.

BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Player
BDP-S5000ES: The world's most advanced Blu-ray Disc Player, for customers who require absolute perfection in home cinema
Blu-ray Disc has revolutionised the home cinema experience, bringing huge increases in video and audio quality, and features designed to further enhance viewers' engagement with the movie they are watching. Although the quality of the complementary products of the range, BDP-S350 and BDP-S550, make them perfectly capable of delivering the full HD experience, the new BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Disc Player is designed to take that audio and video experience to the limit.
Sony has put all its expertise in video and audio processing into the BDP-S5000ES, making it the best player yet. The combination of the HD Reality Enhancer and Super Bit Mapping takes the picture quality way beyond what has previously been available from Bu-ray Disc, ensuring a stunning image whether you use a BRAVIA™ LCD TV or a home cinema projector from Sony.
The HD Reality Enhancer continually analyses the image coming from the disc, sharpening edges while not over-emphasising other elements of the picture, reducing the effect of grain on the original filmstock, and increasing the colour depth from the 8 bits on the disc to the equivalent of 14 bits. Meanwhile Super Bit Mapping, which uses unique processing based on human visual sensitivity, enables the player to deliver the best possible quality over HDMI™, with smoother colour tones.
To match all the video capability, the BDP-S5000ES has been designed to sound better than any other Blu-ray Disc Player. It uses a high-stability Precision Drive HD transport mechanism in the center position, an ultra-rigid Frame and Beam chassis to reduce vibration and a low-leakage R-Core transformer.
The analogue audio board is isolated from the video and servo sections to avoid interference, and the player offers Linear PCM and HD audio decoding with bitstream output, and 7.1-channel analogue outputs. It will handle all formats up to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, either decoded internally or output as bitstream.
It will also upscale your existing DVDs to 1080p using Sony's Precision Cinema HD Upscale, and even the analogue component video output is superior, thanks to the use of 14-bit/ 297 MHz Video D/A conversion.
To make the most of the extra features becoming available on Blu-ray Disc releases, the S5000ES is compatible with BD-Live and BonusView, This enables it to access exciting online services and extra content, such as commentaries and special features, which can be downloaded from the Internet and saved on the included 1GB USB flash storage device.
In addition that Internet connection, via the player's Ethernet port, will allow future firmware enhancements, ensuring the player to be kept up to date with any developments in features or funtionality.
The newly announced BDP-S5000ES does complement the existing Blu-ray Disc Player range with the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550. All those models use Sony's award winning XrossMediaBar™, an easy to understand control menu that makes it simple for everybody to use all of the player's functions.
The BRAVIA™ Sync technology makes connecting the players to BRAVIA televisions and BRAVIA Theatre systems easy and enables you to switch on the whole system, including all components by just pressing one button on one single remote control.461490_BDP_S5000ES_.jpg 7,19K 0 Antal nerladdningar

Once again, Sony's booth was front and center upon entering the CEDIA floor, and while most everything there was as advertised, this one particular unit stuck out. Yeah, maybe it just caught out eye because it's around the size of a small refrigerator, but upon speaking with a company representative, we learned that it's actually a 400-disc Blu-ray Mega Changer. The unit on hand was simply there for demonstrative purposes, but Sony intends to launch the BD-Live-capable, RS-232 port-packin' beast in early 2009. There's no word on whether it will ever interface with HTPCs, but we wouldn't count on it.

Oppo gives us a glimpse of their BD player
Oppo Digital is definitely one of our favorite DVD player manufacturers and they gave the show a glimpse of their upcoming Blu-ray player, the BDP-83.
While the player was not a working model Oppo did mention the player will support the full BD profile including BD-Live with onboard storage and Bonus View. The player also supports the SACD format, which is a rarity. Like their recent flagship DVD player, the BDP-83 will feature video processing from Anchor Bay Technologies, the same people responsible for the popular line of DVDO products. Look for coverage on this exciting product from us soon!

When it comes to A/V quality, extras, BD-Live, and more, how did the big movie studios rate when it came to Blu-ray in '08? We hand out the grades.

Disney / Buena Vista
Grade: B
With gorgeous, resonant, and feature-packed heavy-hitters like the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Ratatouille, Cars, and Lost: The Complete Third Season, Disney exploded onto the Blu-ray scene and quickly earned the admiration and adulation of early adopters. In 2008, Disney has proven they still have the ability to impress. Diverse titles like Kill Bill, The Nightmare Before Christmas, No Country For Old Men, Enchanted, and Gone Baby Gone have arrived with crystal-clear video presentations, engaging PCM and Dolby TrueHD audio tracks, and an onslaught of engaging supplemental material, including a few notable Profile 1.1 exclusives.
But 2008 has also proven Disney isn't beyond reproach. While in the minority, a few anticipated releases were wrecked by dehabilitating technical issues, production shortcuts, and the use of recycled masters. Gangs of New York (a personal favorite and just one particular example) suffers from one of the most disappointing high-def transfers I've ever had the displeasure of viewing — edge enhancement, artifacting, texture-blurring Digital Noise Reduction (DNR), and, I kid you not, bizarre vertical stripes that appear atop the image, rendering the Oscar winner unwatchable. The image was so bad, I felt like skipping past Disney and e-mailing my local congressman.
Still, it's tough to really assess the studio's full 2008 performance when so many exciting fall and winter releases are looming on the horizon. Sleeping Beauty looks to be an absolute godsend when it comes to HD exclusive content — it includes PiP commentary, immersive audio interactivity, original recording session experiences, and a reservoir of innovative BD-Live features. Then there's Wall-E, Prince Caspian, and Lost: The Complete Fourth Season, all of which are set to demonstrate Disney's continued commitment to high definition and the online functionality and interactive possibilities of Blu-ray. If November and December is everything they've promised, the studio will easily close out the year with an 'A.'

Tony Stark had a good run but alas it has come to an end.
In just a few days after returning to online retailer Amazon.com, The Dark Knight on Blu-ray Disc and DVD has quickly ascended the home video bestsellers list and now commands the first and second slots.
Iron Man is selling strong, however, resting comfortably in the fourth spot behind The Dark Knight skus and Sleeping Beauty.
What's most curious is The Dark Knight on Blu-ray Disc is selling ahead of the DVD version and has been since both went on sale. This proves two theories: Blu-ray adopters are Internet savvy, and The Dark Knight has the potential to create a substantial number of new Blu-ray adopters.

Yep, we're talking about a Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc, with a single-layer of Blu on one side and a standard DVD on the very same side (as in, not a "flipper" disc). Not surprisingly, the action's going down first in Japan, with Code Blue emergency helicopter doctor Blu-ray BOX (yes, seriously) as the first hybrid title

success of DVD is the kind that consumer electronics manufactures dreamed of, and now after two years after the introduction of Blu-ray, it appears to be gaining steam even faster -- and during the worst economic crisis of our time. According to Richard Greenfield of Pali Capital, in two years there were about 1.2 million DVD players sold, whereas Blu-ray stand-alone player sales are estimated to be at 2.5 million -- no this doesn't include PS3s which are expected to be at 8 million.

We count on the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to generate at least one big studio Blu-ray Disc announcement. Last year Disney came through by teasing multiple titles throughout the coming year. This year they've done the same.
Disney's first Blu-ray announcement is confirming at least three upcoming releases, High School Musical 3: Senior Year (February 17), Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition (March 10) and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition (October) will be released as "Combo Packs" that include both a Blu-ray Disc and standalone DVD version of the film. This brings back memories of HD DVD Combo Discs only the DVD version sits on a separate disc rather than the "flip-side" of the main disc. Last fall's Sleeping Beauty was the first Disney Blu-ray Disc release to include both standard and high-def versions.
Disney goes on to confirm that Digital Copies will continue into 2009 on at least 14 titles including High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Monsters Inc., and A Bugs Life. That's right; both Pixar catalog titles are confirmed for 2009. The late 2009 release of Up creates a Pixar Blu-ray trifecta, though oddly missing is Finding Nemo which at one time was scheduled for a Blu-ray release in late 2007 and then spring 2008.
Other catalog titles confirmed for release in 2009 include Microcosmos (Miramax); Rounders 10th Anniversary Edition (Miramax); Lost: The Complete First and Second Seasons (ABC); Sin City (Miramax); Miracle (Walt Disney Pictures); Sling Blade (Miramax); The Greatest Game Ever Played (Walt Disney Pictures); Pulp Fiction Special Edition (Miramax) and Good Will Hunting Special Edition (Miramax).
Confirmed for a theatrical release is Morning Light (summer) and although not mentioned in the release, Bolt (March 24).
