Sony: PlayStation 3 Blu-ray 3D update due in October

Despite what we'd heard before, Sony announced today at IFA that the firmware update bringing 3D Blu-ray playback to the PlayStation 3 will not arrive this month, instead pushed back to October which, we are told, is an entire 30 days away. until then we'll have to live with the recent MotorStorm 3D game that recently popped up on PSN and a slightly-lower res version of Wipeout. Unfortunately, there still aren't many movies to watch for the time being, and even the most ardent early adopters may want to wait until Sony rolls out the Michael Jackson's This Is It - 3D Enhanced Edition and Alice in Wonderland 3D bundles it also announced. For the rest of us, we'll probably still be firmly planted on the fence by the time the Green Hornet and Spiderman movies mentioned on stage come to disc.

Bra, men dåligt, dåligt att dom gått ut och sagt september förut även om det egentligen spelar mindre roll då det som sagt var ändå knappt finns några äkta 3D-filmer ute. Jaja, får väl som om dom kan hålla vad dom lovar den här gången då...

It has just been revealed at the Tokyo Game Show SCEI SCEJ media briefingpress press conference that PlayStation 3 will support 3D Blu-ray Disc playback from 21 September 2010, through system software update 3.50, allowing you to watch movies in stunning stereoscopic 3D

Kul att dom höll sig till ursprungsplanen! D v s september. Sen kan man ju undra hur dom tänkte när dom senast för ca 2 veckor sen ( 2010-09-01, se morlocks inlägg ) meddelade att den skulle släppas under oktober.

CNET Hands-on with PS3's 3D Blu-ray update

We got a chance to test the 3D portion of the Sony PlayStation 3's latest firmware update, version 3.5, and the short story is that it works fine aside from one minor issue that may be a dealbreaker for audiophiles.
For our test we hooked up our PS3 Slim to a number of 3D TVs in our TV test lab, namely the LG 47LX9500, Panasonic TC-P50VT25, the Samsung UN55C8000, and Sony KDL-46NX810--representing all of the current flat-panel 3D TV makers. In each case the PS3 delivered what was, as far as we can tell by eye and the TVs' status indicators and menus, Full HD 3D, aka 1080p to each eye via the frame-packing format used by Blu-ray. Images appeared as sharp as we expected, without the softer look characteristic of half-resolution broadcast 3D, from DirecTV for example.

For compatibility testing we tried six of the currently available 3D Blu-ray discs: "Monsters vs. Aliens," "Coraline," "IMAX: Under the Sea," "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," and "Monster House." All played without a hitch in 3D mode, as they have on standalone 3D players like the Samsung BD-C6900 and Panasonic DMP-BDT100. It's also worth noting that, as with all of our previous 3D testing, we used standard HDMI cables we had on-hand already; no new cables were required to pass 3D over HDMI.

Using a pop-up menu causes the PS3 to disable 3D.
A couple of oddities are worth noting. The PS3 makes extensive use of menu overlays for settings and status, and engaging them by pressing Triangle or Select during playback causes the image to revert to 2D, which can be a bit jarring. Removing the menu re-engages 3D mode. For what it's worth, other players we've tested can deliver overlays and maintain 3D mode.
Audiophiles may fume in rage that, according to Google's translation of Sony's Japanese press release (hat tip: AVS Forum), the PS3 is incapable of outputting high-resolution audio formats, namely Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-Master, when playing back 3D Blu-rays. We confirmed this issue using "Ice Age" and a Pioneer VSX-1020-K--while the Panasonic DMP-BDT100 lit up the Pioneer's "DTS-Master" indicator, the PS3 could only summon the standard "DTS" message in 3D. We don't consider this a big deal, however.
Aside from these minor issues, the upgrade making the Sony PS3 a 3D-compatible Blu-ray player (did we mention it's free?) provides a rare smooth sail in the otherwise rough seas of this year's 3D TV revival.

Så summa summarum fungerar 3D blu-ray klockrent med några quirks. Menyer och inställningar stänger av 3D-läget och ljudet är core-biten av DTS-HD och Dolby HD-formaten.

Det är ingen här som har en 3D-ready TV som skulle kunna ge en liten kort recension av om det funkar bra?

Jag har nu en ny Samsung 40" C8000 3D-modell som jag sitter ca 3 m ifrån. Ruggigt snygg TV förresten...

Det spel i 3D jag gillar bäst är faktiskt Stardust HD. Beror kanske på att jag lirat spelet mycket förut och nu i 3D blir det ett härligt djup och lättare att spela eftersom man åker runt en planet i spelet. Tummen upp från mig! Kostnadsfritt 3D om du redan har Stardust.

På andra plats kommer Motorstort 3D Rift. Kostar 120 kr - värt pengarna. Också en härlig 3D-effekt även om grafiken är något nedskalad. På vissa banor ser det helt underbart ut i 3D och tillför verkligen en dimension ;-)

Wipeout och Pain är också gratis 3D om du äger spelen sedan tidigare. Har bara kört dem kort, men tyckte inte 3D tillförde så mycket. Måste köra lite mer först för att kunna uttala mig.

Smaken är väl som baken. Gillar man ett spel kommer man säkert gilla det ännu mer i 3D-version.

Det går bevisligen att göra bra spel i 3D, så jag ser fram emot de kommande åren. När sedan PS4:an kliver in på banan om 3-4 år så blir det säkert 3D i 1080p och 60 frames - yummie :-)

Sammanfattningsvis tycker jag 3D i spel är tämligen coolt. Sen är det ju ganska dyrt med TV:n för stunden, men det lär väl bli mer eller mindre standard under de kommande åren.

Nackdelen med att köpa 3D-TV nu är väl att de inte är perfekta. På min Samsung ser man en del "crosstalk" i spel men kanske ännu mer på Bluray 3D - dvs. spökskuggor runt vissa objekt i vissa scener. Irriterande, men ingen dealbreaker.

Dock blir det inte för mörkt med min Samsung tycker jag, som några ovan klagade på. Det blir mörkare, men spelen krämar på ljuset och på en LCD är ju det inget problem.
