Dragon Quest XI for Switch is developed in Unreal Engine 4

The Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is developed using Unreal Engine 4, series creator Yuji Horii said at Epic Games Japan’s Unreal Fest East 2017 at Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center today.

Several Twitter users who attended the event reported Horii as confirming the Switch version is developed in Unreal Engine 4, suggesting that it is a port of the PlayStation 4 version rather than the 3DS version. Horii questioned whether he could talk about the Switch version being developed in Unreal Engine 4, to which Square Enix programmer Mitsuru Kamiyama replied, “you already said it!” It should be noted that Unreal Engine 4 did not officially support Switch until version 4.15, while Dragon Quest XI was originally developed in version 4.13.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age launched for PlayStation 4 and 3DS in Japan on July 29. A western release is planned for 2018, but platforms have yet to be announced.

DOOM Provides a 'Good Reference Point' to What Wolfenstein II Will Offer on Switch

 

With DOOM and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus heading to Switch, many are understandably intrigued to see exactly how well they will perform on the system. Recently we shared details on how DOOM is set to look on the console - perhaps most notably including the fact that it will run at 720p in both docked and undocked modes - and, thanks to a Gamespot interview with the game's director (Jens Matthies), we now know to expect a similar performance for Wolfenstein II.

When asked about the experience we can expect to have with the Switch version of the game, Matthies mentions DOOM as being a good "reference point", emphasizing that both games are running on the same engine. This should, in theory, mean that both games will perform equally in terms of things such as their graphical output and framerates. It's also reiterated that, beyond that, "it doesn't really matter what kind of platform you're on, it's still the same game".

As you may well be aware, DOOM is scheduled for release this holiday season with Wolfenstein II following in its footsteps sometime next year. Once we can get our hands on the former properly later this year we should have a better understanding of what to expect for the latter. That said, we were pleased with what we saw when we played it in the handheld mode not too long ago.

Those of you who follow the exploits of former Rare employees as closely as we do here at Nintendo Life may be aware of Raging Justice, a side-scrolling fighter inspired by Streets of Rage and Final Fight from Nic Makin, who worked at the UK studio on titles such as Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero.
Makin has been promoting the game tirelessly for the past few months with Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam being his target platforms initially. However, he has revealed to us that Switch is a "priority":

Demon Gaze developer Experience setting its sights on Switch

Experience has never been associated with Nintendo platforms. In the future, however, that will likely be changing. Hajime Chikami, the president of Experience, expressed interest in developing for the console in a brief message posted on Twitter.

Experience might be best known for its work on the dungeon crawling Demon Gaze series. The studio also developed Stranger of Sword City and Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy.

Mantis Burn Racing to support cross-play on Switch, frame rate detailed

VooFoo Studios has announced two new aspects pertaining to the Switch version of Mantis Burn Racing.

First, cross-platform play is supported. Switch players will be able to race against those on Xbox One and PC.

Mantis Burn Racing will also run at 60 frames per second in both docked and portable modes. Keep in mind that the frame rate will be lowered to 30 FPS for 3 and 4-player local split-screen races. 2-player split-screen has the game running at a variable 30-60 FPS.

VooFoo Studios technology director Mark Williams said today:

“We’ve been spending a lot of time getting to grips with the capabilities of the Switch – we’ve learnt a lot by digging deeper into the hardware. The Switch’s performance analysis tools have allowed us to understand where frame rate improvements could be made and we’re really pleased to have the game running at a consistently smooth 60fps – we were determined to make the Switch version the best it can be.”

Update: Nintendo World Report clarified that the motion controls aren’t for gyro aiming. Instead, you can shake the right Joy-Con to do melee attacks or Glory Kills. The setting only seems to appear if you’re playing with the Joy-Con.

Root Double developer Regista to make Switch titles

Regista, the visual novel studio behind the Root Double series and the Nippon Ichi Software-produced Exile Election, will develop titles for Switch, it announced on Twitter.

“The limited company Regista will develop for Nintendo Switch,” the company said. “We are starting work on the development of existing titles, as well as original titles. Please look forward to the announcement of more information.”

Regista’s current lineup of upcoming titles consist of Un:Birthday Song ~Ai o Utau Shinigami~ Another Record and Starry Sky ~Winter Stories~ for PS Vita.
