Sources close to Sony say the company will be making "very big" PlayStation 3 announcements within the next two weeks. The company wants to get a message out before the end of its financial year (March 31). Speculation is suggesting March 15.

Oh yea, forgot Darkness. Looks really good. But then, it's Starbreeze. 

"The engine we used on Riddick wasn't really suited for the current generation of Hardware. This is OUR next generation - our second title with that sort of technology, which gives us a big advantage. With The Darkness we started with tools that were already developed for the core part of the technology".

UTL: Dark Kingdom:

The plot is not contiguous with previous games. Same setting but allowing themselves to skip around within the overall timeline of UL lore. More immersive story line than typically associated with action RPGs.

3 playable characters (maybe more). Brute, Mage and Knight.

More details b/c of multiple cell processors: When you smash skeletons, you'll see bones ricochet individually off stone walls, etc.

I think it looks okay, but it's obviously far from done. There seems to be a lot of empty space which I'm not liking. There are 7 total pictures. 3 corridor shots, 3 room shots and 1 I'm not sure of. Art?

They look okay, but don't let me get your hopes up. As I said, I kind of like what I've seen of the style so far, but that's a personal preference and I'm sure there are plenty here who will hate it. That said, I do wish they had gone with a more realistic style. Oh, well.

Andersson says that the game will definitely have an online component, but until they know more about the network structure, they can't say for sure what it will include. "We still don't know much about Sony's online plans," he says. "I think they have big hopes, and we know there's something coming, but we don't know to what extent that will be. We'll need to rethink the size of online whenever we get that info."

ser ju bra ut... men som sagt i tidningen så blir det nog snyggare när det väl är klart, dock ser man ju ganska lätt att det inte är till ps2

Some stuff will DEFINITELY be announced in some capacity on the 15th.

SOE rep just mentioned to me that Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (while asking that the screens be removed for now) will be officially announced on the day, with much more awesomer nextgen wednesdayton graphics, along with other stuff.

No idea about SCEW or 2nd/3rd parties, but I'd say it's a good bet.

We understand Sony will not use Phil Harrison's GDC speech (March 22) to make its announcements, but that the firm may be looking to get its announcement out next week, if possible.

The company has scheduled a gathering of Japanese third party publishers on March 15th (Wednesday), and it's possible that a release will go out that day. Koei president Kiyoshi Komatsu says that he expects an announcement to be made.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Europe sources confirmed that a major announcement is planned next week, but would not be drawn on details of what will be discussed - which does mean that it's by no means certain that PS3 will be on the agenda.

The press will be at the event (its not for developers only apparently).

So expect something big on the 15th!

PlayStation 3 may sport download service for selected PSone, PS2 titles

Reports from development sources close to Sony Computer Entertainment are indicating that the firm is planning a major digital distribution service for game content, which could be a key element of PlayStation 3 - or even of a relaunched PS2.

Several senior developers have confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that they have spoken informally with Sony about the question of digital distribution on consoles, although these discussions were described as being "purely about technology, not business models" by one source.

However, even the technology discussed could be very revealing regarding the Japanese giant's plans for the coming years - with one source from the development arm of a major third-party publisher claiming that Sony has been discussing the technical feasibility of providing PSone and PS2 titles over digital distribution with them.

This could indicate that Sony is hoping to provide a service for the PS3 similar to Nintendo's Revolution digital download system, which will allow users to access a back catalogue of Nintendo titles through the next-generation console.

In Sony's case the challenges may be significantly more difficult, since PlayStation titles were customarily several hundred megabytes in size, and PS2 titles spanned multiple gigabytes - compared to just a few megabytes or less for NES, SNES and N64 titles in the Nintendo back-catalogue.

However, as Internet connections speed up downloads of this size will be far more reasonable - already, several Xbox Live demos for the Xbox 360 are over 600Mb in size - and our sources indicated that Sony may also be investigating the possibility of remastering certain PS2 titles to allow them to stream later content over the network while the player is already playing early parts of the game.

The move would not be surprising, given that both other next-generation consoles will offer downloadable game content - Xbox Live Arcade and game demos in the case of Xbox 360, and the back catalogue download service on Revolution - which makes it highly unlikely that Sony will miss out on this opportunity.

The information from our development sources comes only days after Electronic Arts' European vice president of sales, Dr Jens Uwe Intat, confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the leading publisher is already in discussions with platform holders over digital distribution - telling us that "we as a total industry, software publishers and hardware manufacturers, are already sitting together and working on business models."

One of the key requirements of digital distribution on this scale, however, is a large storage system - such as a hard drive, a component with which Sony has had a patchy history. Although the PlayStation 2 hardware can support a hard drive, the peripheral was unsuccessful and was only ever used to any great degree by Square Enix' massively multiplayer title Final Fantasy XI. The PlayStation 3 hardware will also support a hard drive unit but is set to ship without one pre-installed in the basic configuration.

Sony is expected to announce new information about its plans for PlayStation 3 in Tokyo on Wednesday, ahead of a keynote address from the firm's worldwide studios boss Phil Harrison at the Game Developers' Conference in San Jose next week.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. said on Tuesday it will allow the media and analysts to attend an annual meeting for third-party software developers of its PlayStation video game, prompting questions on whether it will give details on the launch of its next-generation console.

The meeting, in Tokyo on Wednesday, had been intended only for software licensees and was closed to analysts and reporters.

A Sony spokeswoman declined to give details of the meeting, to be attended by Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi, but analysts hope it will disclose the launch timing and price for the much-anticipated PlayStation 3 (PS3) console.

"These events typically address platform strategy, loyalty structures, development-related plans and other details that aren't as interesting to us, but the fact that they opened the meeting up raises the possibility that there might be more," said Yuta Sakurai, a senior analyst with Nomura Securities.

Sony Computer Entertainment officially kicked off its 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing just moments ago. SCE President Ken Kutaragi took to the stage almost immediately following the press conference's start and apologized for all the PlayStation 3 speculation that has taken place over the past few months.

"It is my aim," Kutaragi said, "To clear things up about the PlayStation 3 today. The PS2, the PS3, the network, and Future Cell Network, this will all be addressed."

New details are coming in from Sony's open press March 15th event.

First and foremost we have learned that Sony will be doing a worldwide launch in November 2006.  This includes the US, Japan, and Europe.

In addition, they aim to release 6 Million units by 12/31/2006 and aim to release 2 Million units per month starting in January 2007.

Sony have confirmed that the PS3 will be backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 titles and that these games, when played on PS3, will be displayed at high-definition resolutions (similar to what the Xbox 360 does with Xbox 1 games).

A 60GB hard drive is apparently being included with the system. Kutaragi has told publishers to develop titles with the assumption that a hard drive will be present.

Sony has confirmed a worldwide November PS3 launch for PS3. It will be within the first 10 days of the month in Japan, which means 11/4, a Saturday, is a strong likelihood.

Kutaragi has moved on to discussing PS3. He's stated that the system has indeed been delayed because of copy protection functionality isn't ready with Blu-ray. He's reinforced that the software medium is indeed the next big step for PlayStation, though -- the PS1 used CDs, the PS2 used DVDs, and the PS3 uses Blu-ray.

Kutaragi has mentioned to expect a major new PSP update this Spring (isn't it just about Spring already?). He revealed there will be PSP videophone capability in Fall, with an EyeToy and VOIP for the PSP. He also revealed some sort of GPS functionality for the PSP, with the first title to use this being Hot Shots Golf. The next version of the PSP web browser will have Flash support.

Interestingly, Kutaragi has mentioned an emulator for PSP that will play PS1 titles. Sony will offer PS1 games for download at a low price.
