... Toshiba has had very poor PR. The talk coming out of Toshiba a week before CES was that they had WB, Fox and MS sewn up and committed to HD DVD. Obviously this wasn't true and anyone with any sense could have seen that, like I have said, Fox have never had any intentions of releasing on HD DVD, ever. The reason for their PR problems after that was everything was geared towards an HD DVD winners party, and celebrating MS's decision to release a HD DVD X360 to replace the Elite (which is why the Elite is so scarce these days, production actually stopped while they waited for an announcement on an HD DVD enabled X360). Obviously none of that happened and WB were basically always going to go with Blu-ray, there had never been any chance of WB falling on the other side of the fence. Toshiba had to change everything at the last minute, execs went back to Japan, Jodi Sally dealt with the press (which is a terrible idea in itself given her ineptitude) and now we are where we are.

Tror och hoppas på att priserna rasar på Blu-ray spelarna även att de blir kompletta med t.ex profil 2.0 nu när det bara finns ett format kvar.

Universal Studios has officially announced that it will release its titles on Blu-ray.

Though details of the studio's transition away from HD DVD were still sketchy at press time, Universal Studios Home Entertainment Craig Kornblau officially confirmed the move for the longtime-HD DVD supporter in a just issued statement:

"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear," stated Craig Kornblau, President, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms.

“Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def’s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate. While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."

Samsung skrotar sin kombospelare

Samsung kommer inte att lansera sin kombospelare UP5000 som planerat. Spelaren klarar att spela upp både hd-dvd och blu-ray, men skrotas innan den ens kommit ut.

När Toshiba i går meddelade att de med omedelbar verkan kommer att lägga ner sin tillverkning av hd-dvd spelare blev fler företag inblandade utan att de kände till det. Samsung hade planerat att släppa sin nya kombospelare, en spelare som klarar både blu-ray och hd-dvd i mars månad.

Modellen visades upp på CES-mässan i Las Vegas och var tänkt att konkurrera med LG:s kombospelare. Men Samsung har nu bestämt sig att UP5000 inte kommer att börja säljas i Sverige.

Ingen försäljning
- Det var tänkt att den skulle börja säljas i mars här i Sverige, men det kommer den inte att göra, bekräftar Martin Eriksson på Samsung i Sverige.

Samsung hade i går en pressträff där de visade alla sina nya produkter, men UP5000 fanns inte med bland de produkter som visades upp. Inte heller den nya kombospelaren, UP5500 som skulle ha kommit senare i vår fanns med bland de nya produkterna. Inte heller denna spelare kommer att börja säljas i Sverige, meddelar Samsung.

Blu-ray huvudfokus
- UP5000 var en avancerad spelare, men vi har hela tiden haft huvudfokus på blu-ray formatet och nu är det ännu tydligare vilket format som kommer att gälla, säger Martin Eriksson.

Hur LG kommer att göra med sin nya kombospelare BH-200 vet vi inte idag. Till skillnad från Samsung finns BH-200 redan klar idag och detta innebär nog att LG trots allt låter spelaren finnas kvar någon månad, men att tillverkningen av BH-200 stoppas inom kort.

Vi lär heller inte få se någon marknadsföring när det gäller kombospelare framöver. Formatkriget är över, blu-ray står som segrare. Så enkelt är det.

Amazon Names Blu-ray 'Digital Format of Choice'

Though it will continue to stock movies on both high-def disc formats, Amazon.com said Wednesday that it will more prominently feature Blu-ray hardware and software products on its website.

In a just-issued press release, the web giant said it was making the move in an effort to "help demystify high definition entertainment for consumers."
"The high-definition landscape is rapidly changing, and consumers are looking for guidance on how to make the best high-definition buying decisions," said Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon.com. "In order to best serve our customers, Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format and will continue to carry the 'Earth's Largest Selection' of Blu-ray products."

Faricy went on to say that Amazon customers had "clearly voiced their support for the Blu-ray format," with sales of Blu-ray movie titles increasing from just over half of high-definition sales to over three-quarters of our high-definition sales since early January.

Though Amazon's statement this morning echoes a similar announcement from Best Buy early last week, the future of the HD DVD format by now is a fait accompli, following primary HD DVD backer Toshiba's announcement Tuesday that it would drop all efforts to produce and market the format.

Oppo next to create a new Blu-ray player
Oppo fans left on the HD format sidelines can rejoice, as word comes that the company will add a Blu-ray player to its well-received line of DVD upscalers. According to the VP of product development, the company is "very early" in their development cycle, and we should expect more details sometime this summer. While sooner would definitely be better than later, we can't argue with a timeline that leads us to expect nothing less than a fully featured BD Live compatible player from a company with a reputation for delivering more bang for the buck.

Sen om Transformers låter bra som det är är en annan sak. För en perfektionist som mig själv duger bara det BÄSTA.

Word has it that, Michael was so infuriated that this elecTronics corporation would have the gall to think that his studio was the weakest link in the Blu chain so as to offer them a pay-off that…… when he was interviewed by BusinessWeek and revealed that the rumor was WB was going Blu, it was an *in your face* to that particular consumer elecTronics company for misreading his studios fortitude concerning staying Blu.

Onkyo Switches to Blu-ray

Onkyo Corporation has announced that they have abandoned the HD DVD format and will now shift focus towards development of a Blu-ray player. The Onkyo HD DVD player shared most parts with Toshiba's HD DVD players, and since those players are now out of production, Onkyo is forced to discontinue development and production of their player as well.

In order to prevent such a situation from setting the company behind, development has been ongoing for the release of a Blu-ray player. No timeframe was given as to when consumers could expect to see an Onkyo Blu-ray player, but by the end of the year should be very plausible, if not sooner.

Genius Makes Up Its Mind Already?

Genius Products is hinting it will release future titles in Blu-ray Disc.

The admission came during a Genius investors’ conference in Dana Point, Calif on Feb. 19, the same day that Toshiba said it would shortly stop making HD DVD players. Through the first several months of last year, Genius was releasing titles in HD DVD, but has stalled since then.
To the best of my knowledge, Genius hasn’t yet streeted a major title in high-def in 2008.

But it appears that Genius put on the high-def distribution brakes to see how the format war chips would fall.

“Whether its Blu-ray or HD DVD…that was solved today that HD DVD backed out,” said Genius CEO Trevor Drinkwater during the company’s presentation at the Roth Capital Partners event. “Blu-ray is the last format in, and that has cleared the way for the industry to get aggressive around next generation DVD.”

A spokesman for Genius said there weren’t immediate plans for the company to specify its high-definition strategy. Drinkwater likewise did not detail upcoming Genius high-def releases during his speech.

Nearly half of Paramount's Blu-ray titles are in stock at Amazon again

Way back when Paramount dropped Blu-ray for HD DVD, we saw something very odd happen as some titles were snatched from shelves and within a few months Paramount Blu-ray titles were going for a premium via 2nd hand services like Amazon and eBay. Now just as quickly as they disappeared about half of the 32 titles are back in stock on Amazon.com. No one really knows what the deal is, but we'd bet that these discs have been in a warehouse all along -- just in case. If this is in fact how it went down, Paramount certainly did play its cards right on this one.
