The big news is on the audio front where Paramount is taking a big step forward. Not only will Top Gun on Blu-ray include the same 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix from the HD DVD version, it will also include a 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix as well.

This is the first confirmation of Paramount using DTS-HD Master Audio on any high definition title; HD DVD or Blu-ray. We can only hope Paramount finds opportunities to utilize the favored audio format on additional titles in the near future.

Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the US Blu-ray Disc release of Shine a Light on 29th July 2008. Martin Scorsese and The Rolling Stones unite to bring audiences “Shine A Light”. Filmed at the Beacon Theatre in New York City in Autumn 2006, Scorsese assembled a team of cinematographers to capture the raw energy of the legendary band. There are special appearances by Christina Aguilera, Jack White and Buddy Guy, and four Rolling Stones performances not seen in theatres.

The Omen Collection Coming to Blu-ray

Online retailer DVDEmpire.com has begun taking pre-orders for The Omen: The Collection Blu-ray Disc set from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Early information from the retailer indicates this four-disc set will include all four Omen films: The Omen, Omen II: Damien, Omen III: The Final Conflict, and the 2006 The Omen 666 remake. As of now, there is no indication the original Omen will be released separately, though that could easily change in the coming weeks.

Fox will likely utilize their standard widescreen 1080p transfer and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio on all four films.

Rumor Mill: MGM Readying Bond Titles For Blu-ray Release?

UPDATE: (6/05/08, 1:30pm ET) According to late word from Fox France, 'Goldeneye' and 'Tomorrow Never Dies' will not be among their first six Bond BD releases. Instead, they've been replaced by 'From Russia with Love' and 'For Your Eyes Only.' We've updated the titles listed in the post below accordingly.

The French release of six Bond flicks on Blu-ray this November has hopes high that the same films may find their way to US store shelves before Christmas.

The French website filmsactu.com is reporting today that MGM (via its parent distributor Fox) will release a half-dozen Bond titles on Blu-ray in France on November 5, 2008. The six flicks are reported to be 'Dr No,' 'Thunderball,' 'Live or Let Die,' 'From Russia With Love,' 'Die Another Day' and 'For Your Eyes Only.'

As for the fourteen other unreleased Bond titles ('Casino Royale' is the only 007 flick currently available on Blu-ray), rumor has it that they're planned for release concurrent with the BD release of 'Quantum of Solace,' sometime in the first half of 2009.

Though the French release of these titles doesn't necessarily mean they will also hit shelves stateside, generally Fox/MGM's release of such tentpole titles in France happens concurrently with (or is preceded by) a US release, heightening expectations that a US announcement could be on its way.

We should stress that with no official word from Fox or MGM stateside, all discussion of a US release of the Bond catalogue is purely speculative at this point. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted when and if any official information comes in. Stay tuned...

The Godfather Blu-ray in September?

An article in American Cinematographer confirms a massive restoration effort is complete on all three Godfather films, the result of which has already been screened to select audiences in LA and will appear in an all-new DVD trilogy box set in September.

That's fantastic news! But, does this mean The Godfather Trilogy is coming out on Blu-ray Disc, too? We think so, but don't have the definitive confirmation from Paramount just yet.

The American Cinematographer article goes into great technical depth in detailing the challenge of individually restoring each Godfather film. It also provides a few "before and after" images including the set we've previewed below.
