Sony STR-DA1200ES
AV receiver £400 (4500 kr på komplett.se)
IT'S TOO MUCH to expect hi-fi and home cinema makers to hit the bullseye with every piece of equipment but, by the general standards of a globe-straddling behemoth, SonyÕs recent record with multichannel receivers is average at best. ItÕs had to watch two big rivals, Denon and Yamaha, carve up the entry-level-to-midrange for the last couple of years. Well, those days seem to be over Ð for now, at least.
The Sony STR-DA1200ES is one the most profoundly impressive bits of kit to come through our listening rooms for a good while, and should make life very awkward for its rivals in the process. Office opinion is divided on the aesthetic merit of SonyÕs ÔwaterfallÕ fascia (for waterfall, read lumpy, say some), but everything else about this receiver Ð the weight of the controls, the logical and tactile remote handset, the superbly rapid and accurate speaker set-up Ð will make even the most retiring owners feel a little bit smug.
Apart from the fine set-up menus (a far cry from SonyÕs more usual labyrinths of frustration), the Õ1200 impresses with its specification. HDMI switching (two in, one out) helps cut down on wiring to a screen, as does video-upconversion to component from composite or S-Video. Seven 100w channels of amplification is ample, and only the AM/FM tuner seems penny pinching Ð especially when SonyÕs cheaper STR-DB895D packs in DAB.
For a £400 receiver, the Õ1200 deals with movie soundtracks imperiously. Playing V For Vendetta, the Sony establishes a wide, deep soundstage and pins effects to it ruthlessly. Movement is steered promptly, and dialogue through the centre channel is distinct, well separated and equally well integrated. Most impressive of all is the brutally controlled way the Sony dishes up the low frequency stuff Ð some rivals may dig as deep as the Õ1200, but none has the cast-iron grip that the Sony demonstrates. Whether delivering a bass guitar or an earthquake, it leads in and out of low-end stuff with sharp attack, solid impact and realistic decay. And even at neighbour-baiting volumes, the sound doesnÕt harden or brighten Ð it simply gets louder.
Music, be it stereo or multichannel, benefits equally well from the SonyÕs natural, uncoloured voice and sparkling top end. Stevie WonderÕs exuberant Sir Duke positively gushes from the speakers, alive with detail Ð it might lack some of the outright dynamism some more expensive AV-engine designs can bring, but the Õ1200 generates a very believable and musical sound nonetheless.
This yearÕs receiver Awards are set to be far more hotly contested than they were the day before this Sony arrivedÉ
Jag rekommenderar även köp av senaste numret av What HiFi där de jämför denna med bland annat
Pioneer VSX-1016V som är en av de populäraste receivrarna här på prisjakt.se.
