Postad 10 september 2006 - 04:26 Then did they release the very similar Panasonic FX01 that mainly is a FX9 with 3.6 wide angle zoom (as 28-102mm 2.8-5.6 by LEICA and yes, 28mm is very wide) with the same excellent Optical Image Stabilizer, slightly better battery life (about 320 shots) widescreen movie mode (848x480 pixels) no visible "purple edges" and two more scene modes, in a very elegant ultra compact body (120cm3 or 94x51x25mm) at only 299usd or 2950sek with 16MB SD card, li-ion battery and separate charger... * See more details and advantages at FX9 above, type it give exactly the same sharpness... But it may be slightly softer in the corners and (just as FX9) some diagonal lines look little "noisy" or slightly pixelated in full screen (which is like 330% closeup) but that is not visible in prints, even if you make the picture twice as big... Then should you NOT use the 400 or higher ISO settings (as with all compact cameras) even if the "low noise" Canon SD630 give just as much noise, as example... And FX01 / FX9 give anyhow clearly higher picture quality, than most bigger cameras and especially finer sharpness, with the valuable stabilizer... And the NEW Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS (eu) Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH (us) is the first ultra compact (134cm3 or 91x26x57mm) from Canon with Optical Image Stabilizer and it has also a fine 4x zoom (as35-140mm F2.8-5.5 with very little purple edges) and 6 million effective pixels - that give very sharp pictures (about 1700 fine lines) of excellent quality with very low noise (up to 100 iso) 2.5 inch screen (173k pixels, good in strong sunlight) it work fast, has ok battery life (240 shots) and a tiny viewfinder... At expensive 3580sek or 425usd with a 16MB SD card, li-ion battery and in camera charger... But it give strong red eyes with the weak flash, very slightly darker and softer corners (especially at wide angle) you get almost no manual controls and you can't see the selected shutter speed, it has a silly design (in my eyes - with black, light blue, gray aluminium and crome) need a special li-ion battery, has no seperate charger and cost clearly more (but give slightly more sharpness) than the more elegant Panasonic FX01 that in addition offer a finer wide angle 3.6x zoom (as 28-102mm) is even more compact (120cm3 or 94x51x25mm) has better battery life (320 shots) and a higher resolution screen... Then has Panasonic just released the extremely promising Panasonic FX07 and FX50 that mainly is the FX01 above, with the addition of a 7.2 millions effective pixels sensor and for FX50 also a magnificent 3 inch screen (230k pixels and still good 300 shot battery life) with the possibility to select dual image playback... They are also even more elegant (especially in black and with an even more rounded grip side) than before, with a ultra compact metal body... The slightly bigger FX50 is only 140cm3 (or 97.7x57.1x25.1mm) and FX07 is only 116cm3 (or 94.1x51.1x24.2mm) which is even smaller than before... Then has they a new Venus III processor with a "Intelligent ISO Control'" mode that you probably should avoid, because it raise the ISO when it detect fast motion within the frame... It's probably smarter to set the camera in sport mode instead, that give you the fastest possible shutter speed... At only 3660sek or max 350usd for FX07 and just 4075sek or max 400usd for FX50 with 16MB SD card, li-ion battery and separate charger... But we have naturally not seen any tests yet! You find also some other alternatives, especially with 6x zooms, here...
